Hennepin County Drop-off Facilities for recycling and household hazardous waste Easy-to-use. Convenient. Open year-round. About the facilities Hennepin County operates two drop-off facilities that are open year-round. The recycling center and a hazardous waste collection center make it easy and convenient for residents of Hennepin County to properly manage their waste. The facility in Brooklyn Park has a municipal solid waste transfer station that enables residents to dispose of excess household garbage as well. How to use our facilities What to bring: • Please bring proof of residency with you (MN drivers license or current utility bill). It needs to be presented to use the facility. • Payment: Cash, check, Visa, MasterCard and Discover Card are accepted for items with fees. • A general overview of items that you have brought for disposal. This helps staff properly and efficiently assess your needs. What to do: 1. Drive up to our building. Check in with facility staff. 2. At the Bloomington facility – drive in and Free product centers Residents 18 years and older may pick up reusable products, such as: – automotive products – adhesives and glues – aerosols – cleaners – latex and oil-based paints and stains The county does not guarantee these products or their availability, and items selected by residents are used at their own risk. Bloomington facility: Please move your vehicle to the parking lot if using the Free Product Center to keep traffic lanes open. turn off your engine as directed. Staff will unload your vehicle for you. At the Brooklyn Park facility – you will be directed to drive to the appropriate building for the items you will be dropping off. ––The recycling and problem waste building offers limited staff assistance; residents are responsible for unloading their own vehicles. ––The household hazardous waste building has staff who will unload your vehicle for you. Step 1: Drive up and drive in. You’ll be asked to show your driver’s license or other proof of residency. • Businesses must manage their hazardous and problem wastes properly. The hazardous and problem wastes listed in this brochure are accepted from households only unless noted. Visit www.hennepin.us/businesshazardous waste for more information. Businesses may bring in small amounts of recyclables, appliances (unless retailer or repair), tires, used motor oil and lead acid batteries. This brochure represents most items accepted at the drop-off facilities. For questions on other items or specific materials, visit www.hennepin.us/ dropoffs or call 612-348-3777. Step 2: Facility staff will direct you appropriately based on the materials you need to drop off. Materials accepted at no charge Automotive products Lead acid batteries, fluids (such as oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid and fuel and oil filters). Limits and requirements: Must be in containers of five gallons or less and properly labeled with content. Gas cans must be left at the facility to be emptied. You’ll be contacted when they are ready for pick-up. Consumer electronics TVs, personal computers and peripherals (such as keyboards, printers and scanners), fax machines, stereos, telephones (cordless and cell phones), VCRs and rechargeable products (such as tools and portable electronics with batteries). Limits and requirements: Limit per 12 months: five of the same type. Household, lawn and garden products Adhesives, aerosols, batteries (button, disposable and rechargeable), cleaners, fire extinguishers, mercury-containing items (such as fluorescent bulbs, thermometers and thermostats), paint, pesticides, photochemicals, poisons, pool chemicals, stains and varnishes. Limits and requirements: Must be in containers of five gallons or less and properly labeled with content. Limit per 12 months: fluorescent bulbs – 25; paint – three pails (applies to five-gallon size pails only). Propane, helium and butane gas cylinders Limits and requirements: Only small, one pound, non-refillable containers accepted. Look for DOT-39 on label. Accepted at Bloomington facility only. Materials accepted for a fee Appliances Fee: $15 each Air conditioners – freon, appliance compressors, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, freezers, furnaces, garbage disposals, boiler gas valve, microwaves, ovens/stoves, plug-in coolers, pool and portable heaters, pumps (bilge and sump), refrigerators – freon, trash compactors, washers/ dryers, water heaters and water coolers. Limits and requirements: Commercial type or size not accepted. Appliances – non-freon Fee: $30 each for air conditioners and full-size refrigerators; $15 for half-size refrigerators Non-freon air conditioners and refrigerators using liquid propane or natural gas accepted by appointment only. Call 612-348-4491. Mattresses and box springs Fee: $15 each All size mattresses and box springs, including mattresses from futons, cribs and toddler beds. Limits and requirements: Mattresses will be recycled unless wet, soiled or dirty. Tires Fee: $3 each Limits and requirements: With or without rim. Four feet or less in diameter. Recycling accepted for free from residents and businesses (separate into the following categories) Accepted Cardboard – Flatten boxes. • Glass bottles and jars – Separated • by color. Metal, cans – Food and beverage. • Metal, scrap – Remove all non-metal • parts. Drums empty, clean, remove one end. • Newspaper – Includes ads, supplements • Paper – Mail, office and school papers, and paper bags. shredded, folders, magazines, catalogs, softcover books and boxes (toiletries, gift, shoe, electronics and food boxes from cupboard). Garbage accepted for a fee (at Brooklyn Park only) Accepted • Carpet and backing – Less than three feet long and one foot in diameter. Furniture – Broken or worn out. • Remodelling debris – one pickup load • or less. • Other materials – Please call 612-348-3777 to verify what is accepted. Garbage fees for residents $19 for each cubic yard of garbage (a cubic yard is 3’L x 3’W x 3’D) • Scalehouse staff will determine the volume of your load and assess the final fee. Phone books • Plastic bottles – Empty, rinsed, less than • five gallons in size. • Plastic bags – Clean, dry, no residue. Retail, newspaper, drycleaner, produce, bakery, frozen food, cereal, paper product wrappers, and zipper bags without plastic clip. Not accepted • Paper – Pizza boxes, egg cartons, soiled boxes, refrigerator or frozen food boxes, paper towels, napkins, cups, plates and gift wrap. • Metal – Paint cans, containers that held hazardous products and aerosol cans (see household, lawn and garden products). • Glass – Drinking glasses, mugs, dishes, cookware, pottery and vases, window and mirror glass, and hazardous product containers. • Plastic – Margarine, sour cream and other tubs, yogurt, pudding and fruit cups, microwaveable food trays, produce, deli and take out containers, toys and containers that held hazardous products. • The county reserves the right to recover materials from the garbage it receives for reuse or recycling.
