I have been going to the Arvada Center for my entire life, for school field trips, summer camps, concerts, musicals, plays, and banquet functions. The staff is always friendly, the parking is ample and free, and the shows they have there are spectacular. — Scott N. 11 Arts Day and Outreach 12 Education 14 Gallery 16 Exhibition Spotlight 17 Volunteers 18 Financials 20 Friends of the Center 22 Staff 23 About the Center Carla Kappa 02 | TABLE OF CONTENTS From the Executive Director Alex McLeod, Frozen Cascade, C-print, ed. 1/2 2010 Courtesy of Plus Gallery Tarzan The Stage Musical © P. Switzer Front Range Youth Symphony 2014 2014 was a year of change and expansion for the Arvada Center. In addition to exciting new programming, we made substantial progress in our transition to private, nonprofit governance. The biggest artistic expansion was in music, where existing programming gave us an excellent foundation from which to build a comprehensive new program. The Jeffrey Seigel Keyboard ConversationsTM celebrated its 27th season, and we made plans to expand the current evening concert series to include morning coffee concerts, beginning in fall 2015. Our summer concert series experienced artistic growth through a new partnership with Swallow Hill Music Association, and we launched our first season with a resident musical ensemble – the Colorado Chamber Orchestra. Our humanities program included a three-day symposium which brought together artists, scholars, politicians, scientists and activists to examine the background and aftermath of the 1989 FBI/EPA raid on the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons facility. Another major program, in partnership with the Chabad of NW Metro Denver, was a moving talk by Eva Schloss, Holocaust survivor and stepsister of Anne Frank. Both of these programs brought hundreds of new patrons to the Center. In our gallery program, we were pleased to offer UNBOUND: Sculpture in the Field, an exhibition of outdoor sculpture by some of Colorado’s top artists. In partnership with the Museum of Outdoor Arts, this temporary exhibition has been extended for more than a year, as we seek ways to transform the field into a permanent, landscaped sculpture park. We again offered a wide range of work in our theatres, from a sellout production of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap to a much-admired production of the musical Memphis, which garnered nine Henry Award nominations from the Colorado Theatre Guild. Lastly, our progress toward nonprofit governance advanced through a series of key Arvada City Council votes, the appointment of our founding board of directors and the negotiation of a twenty-year cooperative agreement between the City and the Arvada Center. We remain on track to transition the Arvada Center on July 1, 2016 – just in time for our 40th Anniversary. Philip C. Sneed Executive Director FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR | 03 From the Board Chair Laleh Mehran, Entropic Order, interactive installation detail Roller Coaster Design The Great Gatsby © P. Switzer As a department of the City of Arvada, the Arvada Center has received significant financial and service support from the City over the last 39 years. This support has allowed the Center to grow beyond Arvada into a regional arts organization that serves the entire metropolitan area. Due to this tremendous growth, the City and the Center have been exploring other governance models that would better serve the Arvada Center and its patrons. After several comprehensive studies, the Arvada City Council has voted to transition the Arvada Center to a privately-run nonprofit organization that will take effect July 1, 2016. This transition will be an exciting time for the Arvada Center and it coincides with the Arvada Center’s 40th Anniversary, which is another reason to celebrate. As with any change, there may be a few bumps along the way. However, our hope is that these bumps are mostly positive. The City will continue to support the Center as it always has, and the new governance model will allow the Center to offer new and innovative programming along with its award-winning theatre productions, art exhibitions and educational programs. The autonomy from the City will enable the Center to function like a true cultural arts center, rather than a department of city government. This nonprofit will be “new,” but with deep roots in the community. It will have the advantages of an established organization with loyal patrons and donors, but with new and fresh leadership that will focus on improving the Center overall. Naturally, with these changes and improvements the funding needs for the Center will grow. Research shows that as a private nonprofit, the Arvada Center will be well positioned to cultivate new relationships and partnerships to increase its contributed income. Once the transition is complete, the Center, without its municipal connection, will be eligible to apply for all types of funding. And, patrons who previously did not want to make donations to a City-run department can now be assured that their contributions will further the mission of the Arvada Center. We are excited about the possibilities of what we can accomplish on our own. As the Crown Jewel of Arvada, we are confident that we will create a stronger and more sustainable multidisciplinary arts organization that you can enjoy for many years to come. Switzer BLACK BOX THEATRE PRODUCTIONS The Mousetrap The Great Gatsby – Regional Premiere Theatre Meets The Humanities In April, the Arvada Center produced a live reading of the radio play Embers, by Samuel Beckett, in support of the Clyfford Still Museum exhibition, 1959: The Albright-Knox Art Gallery Exhibition Recreated. In the late 1950s, when Clyfford Still and his fellow Abstract Expressionists were at the height of their popularity, theatre artists were struggling to move past the constraints of Realism – and perhaps none succeeded as well as Nobel Laureate Samuel Beckett. The Mousetrap is comforting entertainment. — Juliet Wittman, Denver Westword The live reading was presented in the Center’s Black Box Theatre and also at the Clyfford Still Museum. Prior to the reading, Amanda Giguere, Ph.D. and lecturer at CU Boulder, set the stage with an introductory talk about Beckett’s impact on the theatre and his resonance with other artistic experiments in visual arts, music, and dance. 06 | THEATRE The Mousetrap © P. Switzer Theatre The Glass Menagerie The Last Romance PARTNER PRODUCTIONS The Glass Menagerie presented by Phamaly Theatre Company The Arvada Center offers patrons a special engagement production each year. In 2014, and for the past several years, the Arvada Center has proudly partnered with Phamaly Theatre Company, which presents professional-scale plays and musicals exclusively starring actors with disabilities. In 2012, 5280 magazine ranked Phamaly as the Top Theatre Company, and Phamaly won the 2012 Alliance for Colorado Theatre Community/Professional Theatre Company of the Year award. The Last Romance Tarzan: A High Flying Production For the Center’s 2014 summer musical Tarzan, eight performers took to the vines and learned to fly with the help of Flying by Foy, a leader in aerial performance that has done flight design for Broadway shows such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins. The last time the Arvada Center undertook such a high-flying show was Peter Pan in 1992, which also used Flying by Foy. The Tarzan cast underwent four intense days of flight training, and unlike some Broadway shows that use computerized flying sequences, the Center’s production relied on trained flight operators to manually make the arcs and grand swings that audiences expect of Tarzan. The Last Romance presented by Creede Repertory Theatre In 2014, Arvada Center audiences were treated to the Creede Repertory Theatre production of The Last Romance, a delightful romantic comedy about love in the golden years. Founded in 1966, Creede Repertory Theatre is a professional theatre company located at 9,000 feet in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. CRT’s company produces big city quality productions in a spectacular location each summer, and for the past six years has brought one of their award-winning productions to the Arvada Center. THEATRE | 07 Music After many years of being recognized for the high quality of our theatre productions and our gallery exhibitions – which are produced and created inhouse – we are excited to be able to offer patrons a resident orchestra of the same high quality. — Philip Sneed, Arvada Center Executive Director Colorado Chamber Orchestra Michael Udow Jeffrey Siegel JEFFREY SIEGEL KEYBOARD CONVERSATIONS® Colorado Chamber Orchestra A Welcome New Addition In 2014, the Arvada Center formed a partnership with the Colorado Chamber Orchestra (CCO) to create the Center’s first orchestra-in-residence and composer-in-residence programs. As the Arvada Center’s resident orchestra, the CCO rehearses and performs regularly at the Center and mentors and coaches student musicians in the Center’s Front Range Youth Symphony. Maestro Thomas Blomster leads the orchestra in performances of familiar favorites as well as regional premieres by CCO composer-in-residence Dr. Michael Udow. 08 | MUSIC The Romantic Music of Chopin Mistresses and Masterpieces The Miracle of Mozart! Rachmaninoff and Friends 2014 marked the 27th season that Jeffrey Siegel performed his captivating and informative Keyboard Conversations® at the Arvada Center. In addition to performing piano masterpieces, Jeffrey Siegel concerts feature lively commentary and question and answer sessions. Your people who handle our requests for tickets and follow-up are always so friendly and helpful. Thank you again for a great theater experience! — Sierra Elementary School Lyle the Crocodile was absolutely delightful and had me giggling along with the kids in the audience the entire time! — Michael Mulhern, broadwayworld.com LYLE THE CROCODILE The Arvada Center offers award-winning theatre for children throughout the school year, including shadow-interpreted and audio-described performances so that students with hearing and visual challenges are able to enjoy and participate in live theatre alongside their classmates. The Center’s production for 2014 was Lyle the Crocodile, featuring an extraordinary crocodile that can tap dance, perform household chores and rescue cats from burning buildings. Nearly 46,000 school children enjoyed this delightful musical tale during 2014, all the while learning about not judging others by their appearance and about loving people (and crocodiles) for who they are. 10 | CHILDREN’S THEATRE All photos by © Matthew Gale Photography Ltd. 2014 Arts Day and Outreach My students were over the moon and loved their arts day experience. The instructors were wonderful and worked well with my students. — South Elementary Batik Comedy Improvisation Clay Masks In 2014, nearly 34,000 school children participated in the Center’s educator-respected Arts Day program, including 9,700 low-income and disabled youth who received discounts and free services. Each customizable Arts Day field trip includes, in addition to a children’s theatre performance, a hands-on workshop and an arts discovery experience — gallery tour, history museum visit or actor-led theatre tech talk. The Arvada Center is also known for its creative and stimulating outreach programming that brings arts and cultural experiences to schools and youth-serving organizations. In 2014, the Center’s outreach program made a difference in the lives of nearly 8,600 children and youth throughout the Denver metro area. I can’t thank you enough for your financial help, which allows us to participate in all you have to offer. Without your assistance, we would not be able to enrich our children’s lives to such an extent. Thank you. Drawing for Kids — The Renaissance Children’s Center, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless ARTS DAY AND OUTREACH | 11 Education With extensive educational offerings in drama, dance, ceramics, humanities, music and visual arts, the Arvada Center provides learning opportunities for aspiring artists of all ages, including programs such as ArtStart for preschoolers and Arts for Ageless Adults, designed to provide inspiration for creative spirits ages 55 and over. The Center’s 750 classes, summer camps and professional-level training programs served nearly 7,000 students in 2014. Front Range Youth Symphony Teen Intensive Urinetown The Musical Arvada Center Dance Theatre FRONT RANGE YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS The Arvada Center’s Front Range Youth Symphony Orchestras (FRYS) bring together aspiring young musicians from across Colorado’s Front Range for unique study and training in orchestral music. With four levels of participation — Youth Symphony, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Strings Orchestra and Academy Strings — FRYS provides professional section coaches, guest artists, master classes and the opportunity to perform in the Center’s Main Stage Theatre. Concerts for 2014 included Americana, Annual Teacher Appreciation Concert and Autumn Beauty. DANCE PROGRAM THEATRE ACADEMY The Arvada Center has been offering quality dance instruction for nearly four decades in ballet, jazz, modern, tap and hip hop, and is responsible for training countless dancers who have gone on to receive college scholarships and perform in professional dance companies and on Broadway. In addition to year-round professional-level academy training, the Arvada Center offers a wide range of general dance classes for toddlers, teens, adults and seniors. 2014 dance concerts included Babes in Toyland, Mixed Emotions and Bravo. The Arvada Center Theatre Academy offers students, from beginning to advanced, yearround training so they can develop skills and knowledge in all areas of theatre arts. From comedy and improvisation to musical and classical theatre, students learn the skills they need for the stage. Training culminates each summer in fully-staged drama camps, ranging from three to five weeks. 2014 productions included Pinocchio, Much Ado About Nothing, Sound of Music, Urinetown, Fame and Trifles Light as Air. 12 | EDUCATION Preparing young artists for the stage Education GaGa for Fashion ArtStart Arts for Ageless Adults NEW HUMANITIES PROGRAMS Beginning in 2014, the Arvada Center began placing renewed emphasis on the second part of its name by offering more programming in the humanities. New classes for 2014 included the Four Seasons of Poetry, which featured poetry workshops and “open mic” evenings in the Center’s Main Gallery. A new Mother-Daughter Book Club, designed to encourage reading, bonding and socializing among mothers, daughters and friends, welcomes stepmothers, foster mothers, aunts, guardians, grandmothers and dual moms. And the new theatre salon program provides avid theatre patrons the opportunity to get in the mind of the playwright and behind the scenes of selected theatrical productions. In addition to new classes, the Center hosted several humanities events, including a weekend of art and conversation about the FBI/EPA raid and closure of the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant that was located northwest of Arvada, and it presented a talk by Eva Schloss, the stepsister and childhood friend of Anne Frank. Visiting Ceramics Artists Series The Arvada Center’s ceramics education studio has been in operation since the Center opened in 1976. With a nationally recognized reputation as a high quality, well-equipped and expertly staffed ceramics education program, the Center attracts renowned national and international ceramics artists to the Center each summer for the visiting artists program such as Katie Caron, Kazu Oba, Bob Smith, Don Cox and Willie Eggeman. In 2014, the Center hosted visiting Kansas studio artist and university lecturer Brenda Lichman. In her two-day Surface: Slip and Soda workshop, which was sold out, Brenda shared her soda kiln philosophy, demonstrated glazing and slip techniques and led participants in loading and firing a salt/soda kiln. In attendance were six teens from Smoky Hill High School in Aurora who were able to attend due to the fundraising efforts of their art teacher. In the summer of 2014, after nearly 40 years, the Arvada Center re-imagined the 17 acres of open space located south of its building to create a compelling and engaging outdoor sculpture venue. The debut exhibition, UNBOUND: Sculpture in the Field, curated and designed in partnership with the Museum of Outdoor Arts, featured 27 sculptures of various sizes and media by 15 highly acclaimed Colorado artists. Plans are to transform and evolve the site over the years to create a one-of-a-kind space in the Western region to showcase modern and contemporary sculptures. Awards and Honors • Best of Westword award for Best Group Sculpture Show • Ranked #3 in the Westword article, “The Five Best Denver-Area Art Shows in 2014” • Named SECOND BEST Colorado Art Show of 2014 by the regional arts publication, Art Ltd. 16 | EXHIBITION SPOTLIGHT Volunteers In 2014, Arvada Center volunteers provided the equivalent of $507,540 worth of labor! The Arvada Center is fortunate to have a cadre of dedicated volunteers who provide invaluable service in helping meet its diverse operational needs. In 2014, 336 volunteers contributed nearly 22,000 hours of support. On any given day, Arvada Center volunteers can be found ushering patrons to their theatre seats, escorting school children to arts workshops, leading gallery and museum tours, providing clerical support, preparing materials for educational programs, serving on boards and committees, assisting with various backstage needs and much more. In addition, the Arvada Center provides a fertile training ground for individuals interested in pursuing careers in the creative industries. Annually, the Center offers internships in everything from technical theatre and exhibition design to development and marketing. The Center also provides teens with opportunities to gain work experience as summer camp interns and aides. 7,000+ Hours Judy Davisson + 6,000-6,999 Hours Frances Evans + Mary Raven 5,000-5,999 Hours Carol Jordan Opal Longino Lloyd McKean Marion McKean Patricia Wagner 4,000-4,999 Hours Mary Jo Giddings + Renee Herndon Sheri Zimmer 3,000-3,999 Hours Kay Bailey Robert Earl Reva Hamm Jean Helzer Patricia Jones Gaylia Ostrander Mary Roach Mary Lou Smith Shirley Walker + Sharen Wood 2,000-2,999 Hours Sara Alt Warren Behm Marguerite Behm Nancy Bickford + John Briggs Reva Brown Cindi Bryant Karen Cosens Leta Dufford Sara Fuentes Jennifer Hall Diane Hall Sidney Haugum Mary Kaiser Joyce Murphey Sharon Reilly Martha Russell Shirlee Svoboda Joan Wallace Carol Williams Elizabeth Youse 1,000-1,999 Hours Mark Arnold Nancy Bentzen Judith Berger Laurel Ann Berninzoni LaVerne Bistline Lewis E. The quality of shows produced here rivals most at the DCPA, and you get to park for free! — Stacy P. MISSION The mission of the Arvada Center is to provide arts and humanities to patrons and visitors near and far so they can be engaged, challenged and inspired to experience their world in new ways. ABOUT US 6901 Wadsworth Boulevard Arvada, CO 80003 720-898-7200 arvadacenter.org The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities began as a place to preserve local history. Thanks to forward-thinking citizens, what was merely a heritage museum expanded to become a multidisciplinary facility that is now a model for arts centers across the nation. Dedicated on July 4, 1976, the Arvada Center welcomed nearly 12,000 visitors its first year. It now ranks as the eighth largest cultural attraction in metro Denver and is one of the leading employers of creative people in Colorado. Through its diversity of programming, continuous commitment to the underserved and nationally recognized services for individuals with challenges, the Arvada Center welcomes more than 300,000 visitors annually. With more than half its patrons coming from outside Arvada and surrounding Jefferson County, its influence now extends far beyond its name. Supported by over 2,500 donors, the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District, Colorado Creative Industries and the City of Arvada, the acclaimed Arvada Center celebrated its 38th year in 2014 dedicated to enriching, inspiring and educating all ages. Fantastic art opening three different shows. Couldn’t have asked for a more collective space or better finger foods! Just wish it was closer to home so I can have my own FREE museum nearby. — Nicole S. ABOUT THE CENTER | 23 She Loves Me; photo by P. Switzer Katie Caron, Drosscapes Arvada Center Dance Theatre
