Marines Welcome State Commandant

Marines of the Bett-Toomey Detachment, Marine Corps League of
Lackawanna, N.Y. welcomed State Commandant Hank Whittington of
Binghamton, N.Y. at a reception in the detachment clubrooms last
Thursday evening. The Commandant was visiting this area and
attended a Staff meeting in Silver Creek on Friday Evening. On hand
to greet the Commandant were Commandant Ray J. Puchalski, a
former State Commandant, Past Commandant's Matt Radlowski, Tom
Evoy, Jim May, Dick Juda and Edward Reed, who was Chairman of
the reception.
New Rules Govern College Applications
"Timesaver Teller Service" a program designed to eliminate
delays resulting from long teller
lines during peak banking periods — has been instituted at
the Lackawanna office of Marine
Midland Bank -- Western.
Customers visiting the Lackawanna office, 703 Ridge Road,
now walk into a central line,
moving in turn to individual teller stations as they become free.
The new service is the result
of an experimental program undertaken by three Marine Midland branches last summer.Surveys conducted after introduction
of the new program, indicate that
an overwhelming majority of the
bank's customers found that the
service aUows additional banking
convenience, while saving time
and assuring privacy.

AT BETT-TOOMEY DINNER
Colonel George M; Wilson,
U.S.M.C., Director of the Marine
Corps Public Affairs Office in
New York City, will be the main
speaker at the Silver Anniversary
Year Dinner-Dance presented by
the Bett-Toomey Detachment
Marine Corps League of Lackawanna. The affair will be held
on Saturday evening, October 20,
at the Lackawanna Marine Club
Inc., 1775 Electric Avenue, in
Lackawanna commencing at 8 PM.
Commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in
1952, and after attending Officer's
Basic School at Quantico, Va.,
his first assignment was a Platoon Commander with "G" Co.
3rd Bn, 7th Marines in the Republic of Korea. It was during
this conflict that Colonel Wilson
received the Silver Star Medal,
the nation's third highest award
for gallantry in combat and the
Purple Heart for wounds received
in action.
His medals and decorations
include - Silver Star Medal; Navy
Commendation Medal, Purple
Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation,
with two bronze stars; American
Campaign Medal, World War II
Victory Medal, National Defense
Medal with one bronze star; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal
with one bronze star, the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal
with four bronze stars, United
States Service Medal, Korean
Presidential Unit Citation; the
Republic of Vietnam Cross of
Gallantry, and the Republic of
Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Chairman Richard S. Juda has
announced that Major William
Sims, USMCR, a former Buffalo City Court Judge, will serve
as Toastmaster. Captain Richard T. Pierzchala, USMC, Officer in Charge of the Buffalo
Marine Corps Recruiting Station,
will read a message from General
Robert E. Cushman, Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps,
marking the 198th anniversary
of the Marine Corps. Also on
the program will be a greeting
from the Mayor of Lackawanna
Joseph R. Bala.
The Marine of the Year and
Civilian of the Year Medals, as
well as the Cpl. Barnes Medal,
and Major Reynolds Award will
be presented.
Mrs. Robert Carroll will present medals and trophies for the
6th Annual Robert J. Carroll
Memorial Rifle & Pistol Tournament to be held this Thursday

Mr. Nicholas J. Milano, Guidance Director, is informing par ents of seniors interested in applying to State University colleges in 1974 that there are several changes in application
procedures effective immediately.
1. Students will complete a
single application common to the
participating colleges of the State
University.
2. Students wiU be able to m?.ke
applications for as many as four
different college campuses on a
single application form.
3. They will submit the single application to the Guidance
Office where counselors will furnish a transcript for each college choice; these will be attached to the application form and
will be sent to Albany.
4. Albany will then forward
transcripts to each of the colleges designated by the student.
5. Although scores obtained by
seniors on the Regents Scholarship Examination may be used
by the colleges for admission
purposes, it is the only examination that can be used to qualify for a Regents Scholarship.
6. All senior coUeges and uni-
versities except the contract colleges (ex. Cornell Veterinary
School) and most of the two year
colleges have agreed to accept
the results of the R.S.E. but
there are a few others which
demand the A.C.T.
7. The State Department will
not process an application if it
does not bear a social security
number. Students without one
should call the Buffalo S.S. office
at 842-2100 immediately.
8. An application fee is required for each choice listed on
the application form: $10 for the
first choice, and $5 for each additional choice. Students applying to^more than four SUNY colleges.xW applying at a later
date to a&iiiional colleges, must
submit a new application. Seniors
applying will be billed for these
fees later in the year.
Meetings have been held with
seniors to explain all new procedures.
