The Detachment Meeting and Birthday Celebration was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who
came out for the dinner and celebration. The sixty-nine people who attended were treated to a great
dinner of turkey and dressing. The birthday cake was a gift of Susan and Rich Carrera. All of us
added a few calories to our day. The formal cake cutting included our guest of honor, Jack Marin,
our oldest Marine, Lloyd Wilkerson, and our youngest and first time attendee Chris Idol. Keith
Zimbro showed the new commandant’s birthday
video to us. It was a tribute to all who have served
our great country.
Jack Marin from Hope for the Warriors was our guest
of honor and spoke briefly about his appreciation for
what we do for those serving today. At the conclusion
of his talk, George Orfanedes, Paymaster, presented
him with a check for $10,300 from the detachment.
The money came from the profits of the 7th Annual
Wounded Warriors Golf Tournament.
Because of the tradition of celebrating our birthday
and that we were celebrating on the actual day, we did

Commandant’s Office Hours
We all celebrate Christmas in as many different ways as there are families. Some do it with great joy for
the birth of Jesus Christ, some for the joy of friends and family and some with a sense of sadness for not
being with persons who are special to us or because of those who have passed away.
I believe that one of the things to be thankful for this Christmas is our precious freedoms that we cherish
(and some take for granted). It is due to our armed forces that we have been able to preserve those freedoms that we enjoy. Our democracy survives because of our Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of
Independence and our military.
The Jaycee Creed says, “government should be of laws rather than of men” and it is important to remember
that each day. We need to remind our elected officials of that as well.
My hope is that each of us will take the time this Christmas to give thanks to God for the many blessings
we receive on a daily basis. Merry Christmas to all.

It is with great sadness that we note the passing
of Joe Dungee. He was a charter member of the
reorganized Detachment in 1972. He served for many
years as our detachment commandant. He was 86
years old. He leaves behind his wife, two sons and
many relatives. May he rest eternally from his labors.

With smiles on our faces, we posed hurriedly so that we could
enjoy the chicken, hot wings and beer that we were served.
The fried chicken, hot wings and Blue Moon. Great combination. Rich
couldn’t smile with his mouth full. A fun time for all of us.

Appointments
It is with great pleasure that we announce two very important appointments to the staff of the detachment. Rebecca Tyree is going to serve as the Assistant Paymaster to George Orfanedes and Jim Hayes has been appointed chairman of the 2015 Wounded
Warriors Golf Tournament. With these appointments we will continue to have sound leadership for these important areas.

We had sixty-nine members and guests present and fifty-two paid meals. Guests included Barbara Snyder, Louis
Glascock, Nathan Dousef, George Ellsworth, Betty Atwell, Mary Craven, Gerri Peek, Lynn Fenner, and guest speaker
Jack Marin. George Orfanedes presented a check for $10,300 to Jack to go to Hope for the Warriors. He stated that
he “had the honor to be the instrument that uses the money.” Founded by Robin Kelleher in 2006, Hope for the Warriors has served over 40,000 military families. Before he left he gave us about a dozen copies of the movie, “Taking
Chance.” He asked that when you finish your copy bring it to the next meeting for someone else to use. The Knights
of Columbus announced their annual fruit sale. Played the Commandant’s Message for our birthday. Rich and Susan
Carrera supplied us with the Marine Corps Birthday Cake, which Rich so ably dissected. The first piece went to Jack
Marin, the second to the youngest Marine, Chris Idle and the third piece to the oldest Marine present, Lloyd
Wilkerson. The remainder was shared by everyone else. Alan Atwell, Commandant of the 260 read Order No. 47 of
General John A. Lejeune, Commandant, United States Marine Corps dated 10 November 1921. Upcoming events
include a trip to Miller Coors Brewery, and the Christmas Dinner Party on the 15th. Cost is $30 per person.
Veteran’s Day Observance at Carolina Field of Honor
Several hundred people attended the celebration of
Veteran’s Day sponsored by Ward Black Law.

MCL Christmas Dinner Party

Each year Detachment 260 celebrates the Christmas season with a great dinner party for it’s members and their
guests. Please join us this year and be a part of a fun evening with your friends. If you haven’t participated before,
the hotel prepares a great dinner.
The cost for the dinner and entertainment is $30 per person. A cash bar will be available. The last date to sign up
and pay is next Saturday, December 6. Payment can be made on line at www.mcl260.info or by check or cash by
calling Nancy Stotz at 307-3139.
Wreaths Across America
We have been asked to assist in the program Wreaths Across America as we did last year. The date for the program
is coming up on Saturday morning, December 13 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. They would like us to handle the parking in the area around Lewis Recreation Center and to keep the buses moving people to the veterans site. We can do
this with about fifteen or sixteen volunteers. Please arrive at Lewis Center about 9:30 to get instructions and take
your place to get cars parked. W.C.A. will lay over 1100 wreaths on the graves of our deceased veterans.
There is parking directly across from the Lewis Recreation Center entrance.
Our coordinator for this event is Keith Zimbro.
Hope for the Warriors Honored by CNBC
Great news. Hope for the Warriors has been recognized by CNBC as being among its top ten charities supporting
veterans. Jack Marin said, “The company we are keeping on lists like these is both rewarding and validating to us
and to our supporters alike. Thanks for helping make this happen.” In addition to Hope for the Warriors the others
are, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, USO, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Wounded Warriors Family Support, Puppies Behind Bars, Homes for our Troops, Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust,
Thanks USA, and Fisher House Foundation.
This is validation of our choice to work with this non-profit and the work they do.
Toys for Tots
This Friday, December 5, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. the Ward Black Law firm is holding a Toys for Tots drive
in their parking lot at 208 W. Wendover Ave. That is at the corner of Virginia Street. Last year they collected over
5000 toys for our children in need.
They would like for us to join them during the day to show our support for their efforts. If you can give an
hour of your time, please do so. Wear your scarlets if you have them or something that identifies you as a Marine.
Parking is provided at their lot or across the street at Lambeth Troxler Funeral Home. Hope to see you there.
