Summer 2015
Around her grassy mount, our Alma Mater sees
The valleys low, the woods beyond, the hill of willow trees
The grotto’s ivied arch known to the singing breeze.
Mount Aviat, Mount Aviat, we sing of you today.
You’ve taught us how to live, in study, work, and play,
Receiving from the hands of God the happenings of each day.
Now may we form one heart, united may we stay.
Mount Aviat, Mount Aviat, we sing of you today.
With voices filled with joy,
we sing of our school days,
Of hopes, and dreams, and memories,
our Alma Mater’s praise.
Her kind Salesian care has
opened wisdom’s ways.
Mount Aviat, Mount Aviat,
we sing of you today.
Congratulations Class of 2015

MISSION
The Mission of Mount Aviat Academy is threefold:
From the Principal’s Desk:
A
s I reflect on this past school year,
I feel a profound gratefulness for
God’s blessings on Mount Aviat
Academy. It still feels so wonderful to share
that Mount Aviat Academy is a 2014 Blue
Ribbon School of Excellence! I know our
staff and our students will always remember
this school year with fondness, too. Their
response to receiving this recognition is also
something I’m especially proud of—staff planned and students supported
through their own contributions a morning of service to give back to the
community. While academic excellence is important, we are also learning to
live Jesus and “be who we are and be that well.”
It is not just the achievements that I am grateful for but also the
people. Those individuals who make up the Mount Aviat community love
and care for our school in truly remarkable ways. I’d like to pay special
recognition to two longtime volunteers. First, I’d like to thank Mr. Harry
Hammond, who has served as the Chair on the Board of Trustees and
was the vision behind the Aviat Foundation to ensure Mount Aviat’s
future, just to name a few of his accomplishments. Second, I’d like to
thank Mr. Larry Ertle, who established our Athletic Association and
touched hundreds of students’ lives through his very successful volleyball
program. In April, Mr. Hammond received the St. John Bosco Diocesan
Award for Outstanding Contributions to Youth in Catholic school and
Mr. Ertle received the Companions on the Journey National Award for
Outstanding Contributions in Youth Ministry.
You both will long be remembered at Mount
Aviat and we thank you for your years of service.
We cannot thank our volunteers enough for their
contributions to Mount Aviat.
Have a safe and happy summer, and we look
forward to another wonderful school year in the
Fall!
Yours in Christ,
• to provide instruction in the message of Christ,
according to the teachings of the Catholic Church,
within the context of the gentle and caring spirit of
St. Francis de Sales;
• to offer an educational environment that promotes
high academic standards;
• to instill the principles of scholarship, citizenship and
service in the minds and hearts of the students.
Educating students to be
no more and no less
than their best.

Taking STEM Education to the Future at MAA
M
ount Aviat Academy took a journey 150 years
into the future through the National Engineers
Week Future City Competition. Students
explored the engineering process, city planning, and project
timelines as they designed a city of the future capable of
feeding itself through innovative agricultural processes. The
project involved several competition elements including a
virtual city, city narrative and research essay, city model and
team presentation. Beginning in September the team of
fourteen 6th, 7th and 8th graders, along with Engineering
Mentor Mr. Jeff Landis and moderator Mrs. Hanby, learned
that the engineering process is all about planning and
teamwork. Students were challenged by this year’s topic:
Feeding Future Cities.
The Team gathered after school and researched,
imagined, designed and modeled a way to grow a protein
and a vegetable within the city limits that would feed a city
of more than 75,000 residents. They developed aquaculture
for indoor and outdoor shrimp farming and vertical farms
for quinoa. They calculated and graphed the amount of
protein needed per person, developed an elaborate filtration
and irrigation system and modified the quinoa plants to
adapt them to a vertical farm. The research essay then had
to effectively communicate all this information in less than
1000 words. Who knew engineers had to be able to write?
More than 100 hours were spent in the SimCity
program designing a virtual city. Students planned a city by
zones, provided all basic services, made trade-offs between
industry and environment, educated and entertained the
Sims while balancing the budget and keeping the taxes low.
The city had to grow, thrive and renew itself. Points were lost
if traffic was gridlocked, safety was compromised, services
were outsourced, the mayor was impeached or the Sims were
angry with their city conditions. Talk about pressure!
A model of Aquacopia, as our city was named, was
constructed from recycled materials. The budget for the
model and presentation materials was $100. The model had
moving parts, was built to scale, incorporated important
elements of the theme and showed proper use of zoning and
city planning. It took all hands on deck to get the model
ready on time and under budget!
The competition day was exciting, tense and “the best
day ever” according to our students at the Philadelphia
Regional competition. Students responded to questions from
groups of judges and were amazing at thinking on their
feet. Three students gave our formal marketing presentation
before a panel of nine judges. The whole team had a great
time transporting the model, which was not designed to
be transported, through the halls for the presentation.
Engineering on the fly and duct tape saved the day! In the
end they finished well above the average and took home
two special awards. The team is looking forward to next year
when they will take on the challenge of managing solid waste
in the future.

5K Celebrates 5th Anniversary
T
he Mount Aviat Academy 5K and Sister Walk
celebrated its 5th year on Sunday, April 26, 2015. It
was a beautiful, chilly spring morning with sunny
skies. Almost 200 runners came to complete the hilly 3.1mile course in Manchester Park and surrounding areas. The
runners ranged in ages from 3 to 76 and the course was
marked and hand timed by Fuel 3 Sports. The overall male
winner was Patrick Smith with a time of 19:47, and the
overall female winner was Caitlin Pierce, Class of 2001, with
a time of 26:04. As overall winner, Patrick received a $25.00
gift card from the Olive Garden of Elkton for all of his hard
work. Our principal, Sister John Elizabeth, placed 3rd in her
age bracket with a time of 41:03.
This event would not have been a success without
the support of our sponsors. We would like to thank the
following organizations for their contributions: Family
Healthcare of Elkton; McCool Insurance; Dr. Elizabeth
Lowe, M.D.; Formal Affairs; Premier Auto and Tire;
DiPietro and Grace Families; Newark Dental Associates;
and ATI Physical Therapy. We also would like to thank
Knights of Columbus Bishop Becker Council No. 2427,
Olive Garden, Costco, W.L. Gore, Bagelmania, Mr. and
Mrs. Donald LaPointe, Unique Image, and Road ID for
their donation of food or supplies. Their donations kept
our runners well hydrated during the race and supplied the
goodies afterward. Bib winners Gregory Kerek and Holly
Wokcik were lucky and won Gore-Tex running jackets.
Finally, we would like to thank our next-door neighbors,
the Moose Lodge of Elkton, for allowing us the use of their
parking lot for our finish line, and to the Cecil County
Sheriff Department for their police presence during the race.
All participants had a fabulous time and we look forward to
another successful event next year. Because of the support we
have received at the 5K as well as proceeds from the Auction,
and a grant, we are excited to announce that we will be able
to add a new walking path around the playground!

MAA Launches First Girls on the Run
Program in cecil county
M
ount Aviat had the opportunity to start a Girls
on the Run (GOTR) program during this past
Spring. Not only was this a first for MAA,
but this was the first GOTR team in Cecil and Harford
Counties. GOTR is a physical, activity-based positive youth
development program that inspires third through eighth
grade girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun,
experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates
running. Each lesson is structured in the following way:
Circle time, stretch and strengthening exercises, warm-up,
workout and processing and wrap-up. Each lesson ends with
an energy award (ask a GOTR to show you BANANAS!).
The vision of GOTR is a world where every girl knows and
activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue
her dreams. The lessons touched on letting your star shine,
positive self-talk, dealing with emotions, healthy habits,
gratitude, real beauty, taking a BrThRR, courage, putting
an end to gossip, what makes a good friend and our Star
Power. The curriculum also requires the girls to develop and
implement a community impact project. The “finish line” of
the program is running a 5K.
The GOTR team was coached by Kimberly Strohmeier
and Stephanie Skinner and consisted of 13 girls from third
through fifth grade. The team met twice a week for 10 weeks
after school. Their community impact project was a bake sale
where they were able to raise $200 for A Buddy for Life, a
local animal shelter in Elkton. The girls all crossed the finish
line in the Bel Air Town Run on June 7th. The team would
like to thank Norma Locke for laying the groundwork to
start this program here at MAA. We look forward to many
more GOTR teams in the future!
Athletic Association Update:
Diocese Adds Pre-JV Basketball Leagues
I
n the Winter season, the Mount Aviat Athletic
Association sponsored six basketball teams to
participate in the Diocesan athletic league. This year,
the Diocese added Pre-JV leagues to support 3rd and 4th
grade students, and MAA had two teams for that league.
A 3rd and 4th grade co-ed team, led by Chris Locke and
Bill Stegemerten, displayed their enthusiasm for learning
the fundamentals of the game in a great inaugural season.
In addition, a Pre-JV 4th grade boys team, coached by Dan
Black, Nicole Greenplate, and Monica Trout, was fun to
watch as they competed. The 5th grade boys team continued
their development under the watchful eye of coaches Jackie
Hartman and Monica Trout. This group of players continues
to demonstrate strong teamwork balanced by individual skill
development.
Led by John Spych and assisted by Pat Kelsch and
Scott Willman, the 6th grade boys came together to
demonstrate exactly how athletics are an extension of the
school community. The team built special plays to ensure
that every player had the opportunity to score during a game.
The girls JV team, led by Rich Pierce and Rob Colgan, was
able to build on their legacy of success and win the St. Peter’s
Tournament at the end of the season. The Varsity 7th and
8th grade boys team, led by Chris Locke, Gina Psenicska and
Monica Trout, continued to produce exciting competition.
The team capped their strong season by winning the St.
Peter’s Tournament in impressive style.
Off the court, the basketball teams attended a University
of Delaware basketball game and participated in the halftime High Five Tunnel. Special thanks to Tracy Willman for
coordinating an extremely well-attended event. In addition,
in April, the Athletic Association held the annual Sports
Banquet to recognize the efforts of our student-athletes
and coaches. Overall, it was a strong year for the Athletic
Association that was created by the willing efforts of our
head coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, parent
volunteers, and the enthusiasm of our student-athletes.
The Athletic Association is looking for interested parent
volunteers to join our board to support the athletic interests
of our students. A vibrant sports program is an important
part of the school community and a great way for parents
to get involved. If you are interested, please contact Steve
Dymowski at [email protected].
The Oblate Sisters are planning a trip to France during the coming school year. More information is forthcoming or you can contact Sr. Anne Elizabeth
if you are interested in more information: [email protected].

Haley Baker ’11 recently signed a letter of
intent to attend Southeastern Louisiana University on a full scholarship and will play volleyball for the Lions. Southeastern Louisiana,
located in Hammond, is an NCAA Division I
school and a member of the Southland Conference. Haley enjoyed a remarkable career at
Padua. During her four years on the varsity team, the last two seasons as a
starter, the Pandas captured two state championships and finished third the
other two seasons. Haley was an honorable mention All-Catholic Conference
selection as a freshman and helped Padua place third in the state tournament. As a sophomore, Haley was a second team All-Conference choice as
the Pandas won a state title. Padua repeated as state champions with Haley
in the starting lineup as a junior. She was a second team All-Conference
selection. Haley’s club team, Delaware Juniors, won the 96-team Big South
Tournament in Atlanta and qualified for nationals in Minnesota where they
placed 13th. In her senior season at Padua, Haley earned first team All-State
and All-Conference honors and the Pandas finished third in the state tournament. Her club team also advanced to nationals again.
Nicholas Szep ’11 recently graduated from Salesianum High School
and has received an appointment
from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He also will be playing Bears
football at the Academy.

Friends
Moves to
Event-Based Chairs
T
he success of the Friends and Families of the Oblate
Sisters continues to be seen in all their events.
The Friends held their annual Cream Puff Day in
February. Again, they exceeded last year’s total. The new
record is 5,800 cream puffs. That makes for a very long day.
With the help of some great volunteers—some that start at
1 a.m.—they were cleaned up and out the door at 4:00 p.m.
Because of the success of this one-day cream puff sale and
other events such as taco lunch and the Christmas Bazaar,
the Friends were able to make a sizable donation toward
refurbishing and air conditioning the third floor of the
convent.
Not all events, though, are fundraising events. The
Friends continue to host fun activities such as Grandparents’
Day, the Roller Skating Party and the Family Dance. This
year’s Grandparents’ Day was well attended with about
230 grandparents sitting down to a New Orleans-themed
lunch. The roller skating night and the family dance are
events that encourage families to spend time together and
to interact with other school families. The Roller Skating
Party and Family Dance were both a big success, even
though they had to be rescheduled due to weather. The
theme of the dance continued the spirit of Mount Aviat’s
Blue Ribbon celebration as students were encouraged to
wear their “I Glow with School Spirit at MAA” shirts and
were given glow sticks to dance with in the darkened gym.
Families donated canned goods to support the Immaculate
Conception Outreach as part of their entry fee. Boxes of
food were delivered the next week.
Due to the increase of all their events, the Friends will be
moving to a new format of using event-based Chairs. After
putting out a call for help, each event has been assigned a
chairperson. Chairs will be used to run each of the following
events: Ice Cream Social, Roast Beef Dinner, Taco Lunch,
Trunk or Treat, Family Dance, Christmas Bazaar, Cream
Puff Day, Teacher Appreciation Week and Grandparents’
Day. A step-by-step guide on how each event is organized
and run is being prepared by the current board, under the
guidance of Sister Joseph Margaret.
