November 2010 Day Meeting, Thursday November 11th:
November 2010
Day Meeting, Thursday November 11th:
Susan Kuznitsky Presents “Creating strong Pastel Paintings on Sanded Paper Using
Mixed Media“ Doors Open At 10 AM. Demo At 11 AM.
Nationally recognized artist Susan Kuznitsky will demonstrate how to use an under painting to create vibrant
color and depth in your work.
Originally from Chicago, Susan began her training at the
American Academy of Art and later in New York. She has
been painting and teaching in Portland for 19 years. Her
challenge has been finding the balance between being a
wife and mother and an artist. “Teaching is part of that
balance for me,” she says. “It is important that I pass on
the great knowledge I have acquired from the fabulous
artists I have had the privilege to work and study with.”
Susan often teaches one day Art Media workshops at OSA,
and produces commissions and shows regularly with the
Pastel Society. Her beautiful impressions of children and
families at play are reminiscent of Mary Cassatt’s work.

Evening Meeting, Thursday November 18th:
Thomas Conway Presents “The fundamentals of picture making: Solving Problems”
Doors Open at 6 pm. Critique Group 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Presentation at 8 pm.
Originally from California,Thomas Conway has been a local Portland artist for the past 7 years. He has been teaching privately and at OSA since 2008. His weekly classes
offer a range of instruction various technical and material
concerns, from figure drawing to still life.
“I like to think of the Monday meeting as a support group
more than a class,” Conway says. “We’re a small group
of people working towards a common goal: painting well.
Whether you’re working on an elaborate allegory or
a picture of your cat, the basic fundamentals of picture
making will help you succeed as an artist.”

Thomas will begin this demo with a discussion about materials (surface, ground, oil paint, medium, brushes, etc.)

President’s Message
Yes, the sound of flowing water can be heard and seen in
our downstairs studio. Due to
the fantastic response for our
Art for H2O fund raiser, we
were able to install the water
early. Thanks goes to Jack McNally for doing all of the hard
manual preparation! Please
extend your appreciation to
him when you see him, as he has gone far and beyond
the norm of volunteer work.
The participation for our November show is very exciting, as we have surpassed our goal of 150 participates.
Please remember to bring in all of your treasures and
spread the word so that we have a huge response to
our show. Thank you Rene, Sandy and Julie for all of
the work you have put into this project to make it a
great success
OSA has been working with PGE and a lighting contractor to install improved energy efficient gallery
lighting. After 2012, replacement T12 fluorescent
lamps and other components for the existing lighting
fixtures will no longer be available. In addition, under incentive programs currently being offered by the
State of Oregon and Energy Trust of Oregon, OSA has
the opportunity to have a significant portion of the cost
of upgrading its lighting funded. However, in order to
take full advantage of these incentives, the lighting improvements will need to be completed before December 15, 2010. A proposal that includes details of the
cost, incentives, and estimated annual electricity bill
savings will have been presented to the Board at its
October meeting. The proposal includes the upgrade
of the fluorescent lighting, improvement to the color
rendition of displayed art, the elimination of all incandescent light bulbs, and the cost reduction in the lighting portion of the OSA electricity bills.
The board will also be busy this month with our annual audit and goal setting retreat on the 23rd. If you
have any input as to what you would like to see happen
at OSA, please pass your comments and suggestions
onto us. Thank you for your support.
Regards, Kris Kuester

OSA Pledge Drive Continues
Thanks to your generosity, OSA continues to advance
its goals of visual arts education and service within
our community.
This past year we completed the renovation of our
kitchen and replaced worn out equipment. We installed a digital projector and computer terminal in
our classroom, which greatly improved our presentation and teaching capability. And our April Art
and Donation Show provided more than fifty framed
paintings that now brighten the walls of the Northwest Cancer Center’s eight treatment centers.
We hope you will continue to support OSA through
our annual pledge drive. It’s not too late to contribute.. Your tax deductible donations enable us to be
the center for aspiring artists in the Portland area.
This month we are especially asking people to be generous, as we have the refurbishing of OSA’s lighting
and electrical updates to pay for. Again, thank you for
your support!
