It also provides a means for teachers to communicate with parents or guardians about class events and assignments, and ways they can help their child at home. Parents or guardians can contact teachers via email – teachers’ addresses are linked right on the front page. You can also elect to receive periodic emails with attendance and grade updates, if that method is easier for you than going to the site. How to Get Started You should have received a letter in late September that included your username and password for the Parent Portal. If you do not have a username and password please email [email protected]. Logon to Parent Access 1. Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, FireFox, or Safari, and enter the address of the Lakeland Regional High School webpage. http://www.lakeland.k12.nj.us • On the top of the front page is a link to Parent Portal. 2. The Parents' View of Parent Portal When you log in to Parent Portal, the start page appears. This page serves as the central point from which you begin your Parent Portal session. The Parent Portal start page consists of the following main areas: The MAIN MENU consists of the following: Grades and Attendance, Grades History, Attendance History, Email Notification, Teacher comments, School bulletin, Class Registration, Balance, and My Calendars. HOMEWORK HERO Homework Hero is a website where teachers post homework assignments online for students and parents to view. This site should be used when students are absent, are uncertain of an assignment or want to preview future assignments. Many of the teacher’s Homework Hero pages contain website links for tutorials and curriculum resources to provide extra help. Additionally, many club advisors and coaches post information on their activities and clubs. The Homework Hero icon (a notebook page) is located on the right-hand side of the Lakeland website. 2 EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS COURSE CREDIT Credit toward graduation is awarded for course work successfully completed as long as the maximum number of absences or cuts has not been exceeded. Please see the student handbook for a detailed review of the loss of credit policy and procedure. It is required that all students take a course load of 35 credits per year. All students must schedule for lunch each year. Exceptions can be made with prior approval of the Director of Guidance for seniors who need to schedule additional credits to fulfill a graduation requirement. GOOD STANDING A student in “good standing” is considered to be an individual who has made consistent progress towards graduation, demonstrated a passing score on all sections of the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) / Alternative High School Assessment (AHSA) (if applicable), no loss of course credit due to excessive absences, cuts and/or truancies above the district policy, as well as no excessive disciplinary issues which have placed the student on suspension or expulsion. Students who wish to be eligible for student privileges (i.e. prom) must be in good standing to qualify. PROMOTION AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS At the beginning of the tenth grade, students must have completed a minimum of 35 credits to be a student in good standing. Eleventh grade students must have completed 70 credits and twelfth grade students 105 credits to be considered a student in good standing. COURSE DISTRIBUTION AND CREDITS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION 135 credits are required, including the following minimum distribution: - 20 credits of English 15 credits of Social Studies (10 credits of US History and 5 credits of World History) 5 credits of Physical Education and Health for each year of attendance 15 credits of Mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry & 3rd year advanced math) 15 credits of Science (Biology, Chemistry / Environmental / Physics, & 3rd lab science) 5 credits of Visual and Performing Arts 5 credits of 21st Century Life Skills 5 credits of a World Language 7.5 credits of Computer Literacy including the 2.5 credit Introduction to Computer Applications course 2.5 credits of Economics / Finance (required beginning with the Class of 2014) 2.5 credit S.C.O.P.E. If a student has achieved this grade at the time of scheduling, the prerequisite is considered as having been met for scheduling purposes. However, if the student’s final grade at the completion of the prior level course does not meet the required prerequisite, the student will not be permitted to enroll in the next level course. The Chief School Administrator and Director of Guidance may make exceptions. All sequential courses must be taken in the prescribed order. These courses may not be taken simultaneously without prior written permission from the Chief School Administrator. The School to Career program at Lakeland is based on the concept that education works best and is most useful for future careers when students apply what they learn to real life, real work situations. Lakeland offers students challenging, relevant academics and opportunities for meaningful work-based experiences through the school to career and college program. The New Jersey Department of Education adopted into law the Core Curriculum Content Standards. That document mandates Standard 9.1, Career and Technical Education, which includes standards for Career Awareness and Planning and Employability Skills. The Lakeland Regional High School District’s School to Career program consists of the required freshmen S.C.O.P.E. (School, Career Orientation, and Personal Education) course, followed by the sophomore level SEARCH project. In the junior year, students will take a Finance & Economics course. In the senior year, their senior experience can include S.T.E.P. (Students To Experience Professions). This voluntary program offers students the opportunity to make workplace visitations related to their career choices as well as to participate in voluntary college courses, apprenticeships or community service projects. In addition to the School to Career sequence, students and their parents will be invited to attend a 4year planning meeting with their school counselor during the fall of the freshman year. They will create a roadmap that will be used during their high school career to help them select courses and to keep them goal oriented and focused on their post secondary goals. The 4-year individualized student plan is a fluid document that will be reviewed and revised annually during student’s meetings with their counselors during course scheduling. Students and parents are also encouraged to utilize the district’s web based college and career program, Naviance – Family Connection. This tool improves communication between the family and the school and allows students and their families to research together their college and career aspirations. S.C.O.P.E. (SCHOOL, CAREER ORIENTATION, AND PERSONAL EDUCATION) S.C.O.P.E. is the first course in the career development process. This interdisciplinary course (Business, English and Technology Education) focuses on school orientation, career orientation, and personal education. This includes the development of study skills and public speaking. All students will develop preliminary career and educational plans based on a series of personal, skills, and aptitude assessments. Grade 9 2 1/2 credits SEARCH To continue the development of a career strategy, sophomores will complete a career research project called SEARCH. Each student will use his/her Career Passport completed in the S.C.O.P.E. course as a guide for the research of three possible career pathways based on his/her skills, aptitudes, and interests. Each student will meet periodically with a career coordinator who will monitor and provide assistance until the SEARCH project is completed and a report submitted. One outcome of this research will be relevant course selections in the junior and senior year that will help lead students toward their possible career goals. Another outcome of this SEARCH project will be the proper placement in the structured learning experience, S.T.E.P., to take place in the senior year. Grade 10 SOAR Students SOAR from high school experience to the beginning of the rest of their lives with completed portfolios of their best work. In this course students will review and complete this graduation requirement as well as reflect on experiences with an exit paper. Students will have an opportunity to refine or replace any of their portfolio entries. Grade 11 1 ¼ credits 6 S.T.E.P. (STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE PROFESSIONS) S.T.E.P. into the workplace for a career exploration opportunity of your choice. As the follow-up to the SEARCH project, experience up to 30 hours in a workplace setting related to one or all of the SEARCH career choices. This voluntary program will help a student decide if their research and ideas could lead to a career decision. If interested, students can stop by the Career Resource Room or call (973) 835-1900 x 160. Prerequisites: Completed SEARCH project Grade 12 1 credit PREPARATION FOR COLLEGE Colleges vary greatly in the courses they require of incoming students. There is no one combination of courses that would qualify a student to meet the admission requirements of all colleges. College admission criteria include grades, class rank, and scores on college admission exams. Students planning to attend college should consult with their school counselor so that they enroll in appropriate preparatory courses. Students are encouraged to avail themselves of the variety of services provided by the Guidance & Counseling Department. Information is now available online to all students and parents through Naviance, a career and college information resource. Students and parents are mailed home their access code, and any questions should be directed to the Guidance & Counseling Department. School, college, and career information is available in the guidance office and the Career Resource Center for the use of students and their parents. Catalogs from schools and colleges throughout the country are available for examination. Information regarding scholarships and loans is also available for students who plan to continue their education beyond high school. MINIMUM COLLEGE COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR FOUR-YEAR COLLEGES 1. Successful completion of 16 academic units. An academic unit is a yearly course in the academic areas of English, Social Studies, Mathematics at the level of Algebra 1 and higher, laboratory science, or World Language. These courses should be on the standard level as a minimum for 4-year colleges. 2. Certain specific subjects may also be required. Commonly required subjects are: a. 4 years of English b. 3 years of college prep math-such as Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 * Some colleges also require through Pre-Calculus! c. 3 years of a laboratory science, such as Physical Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Forensic Science d. 2 years of the same world language taken in high school, such as Spanish, Latin, or French e. 3 years of Social Studies such as United States and World History 3. 4. SPECIAL NOTES Incomplete grades must be made up promptly. Allocated make up time should be proportional to time missed. If an incomplete is not made up in the allocated time period, a grade of “F” will be assigned. Students who withdraw failing from a course will receive a W- on their record and report card after three weeks into a quarter course and six weeks into a semester course. It is strongly recommended that failed courses be made up in summer school, at an accredited evening programs or via the virtual school. This is particularly important when dealing with a sequential subject, since students will not be permitted to take an advanced subject until the prerequisite subject is passed. Summer school is not available at Lakeland. VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL: Lakeland Regional High School, in conjunction with Educere, provides an option to participate in an on-line school. Students must have access to a computer with internet connection. These courses can be taken for remediation (make-up of a failed course) purposes only and not to accelerate or take an additional course for credit. Students may enroll in February for any courses failed during the first semester or in June for any courses failed during the school year. The current cost during the 2010-2011 school year is $195.00 per course (on average). All tuition and fees are the responsibility of the parent / student. Additional information is available in the guidance office or on the guidance website. FINAL EXAMS A final exam will be administered to students at the conclusion of all quarter, semester and full year courses. The exam is 20% of the final grade. A final project may be assigned in lieu of a final exam with prior administrative approval. Seniors who have an “A” average in a course will be exempt from the final exam in that course. 12 ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAM OPTION Students taking an Advanced Placement course may take the Advanced Placement Exam for that course in lieu of the final exam. If the regular final exam is not taken, the final grade for the Advanced Placement course will be based solely on the marking period grades. The student’s score on the Advanced Placement Exam will have no bearing on the final grade. If the student and parent decide to pursue this option, the following conditions apply: 1. The student and parent must sign a form agreeing to this option. 2. The signed form and full payment for the Advanced Placement Exam must be returned to the Guidance office as follows: a. For first semester courses – form and full payment is due prior to the administration of the final exam. b. For full year and second semester courses – the signed form and full payment must be returned by March 1. c. The fee is non-refundable. 3. If the student agrees to take the Advanced Placement exam in lieu of the regular course final exam and then does not take the Advanced Placement Exam, the final grade in that Advanced Placement course will be reduced by one full grade. This provision applies only to students who have completed the Advanced Placement course in the first semester. 4. Nothing stated in the policy above is meant to preclude a student from taking the normally scheduled final exam in the Advanced Placement course and choosing to also take the Advanced Placement Exam. The Board reserves the right to modify the list of courses offered in any given year for a variety of reasons. These include financial constraints that impact the educational program as a result of the level of state and local funding available. The Administration, in accordance with Board of Education Policy, will decide which courses will run based on student course selections, the availability of professional staff, and other factors. Courses may not run if enrollment is deemed insufficient. Decisions about which courses can be run will be made after students have made their course selections. While every effort will be made to help students schedule the courses they want, conflicts may occur, especially in courses that can only be offered during one or two class sections per year. School counselors will advise students as to their available options. Students and their parents will be asked to adjust the selections based on conflict or deletions of courses. For more detailed information about course content, please use page 1 to contact the subject area supervisors. COLLEGE LEVEL COURSES (Senior Initiative – Seniors ONLY) A limited number of college level courses may be offered in conjunction with some local colleges. These courses may be offered at Lakeland, offered on-line, or on the college campus. Information will be made available, via the guidance office, to qualified students (Individual colleges establish criteria for qualification to enroll for courses) at the time of scheduling. All tuition and fees charged by the college are the responsibility of the student and parents. Seniors may receive college credit documented on their high school transcript as well as on a college transcript. All course options listed above must be approved by the Director of Guidance 13 and the Chief School Administrator. A student may elect to enroll in courses taken at the post secondary level, through correspondence schools, via the internet, or through online instruction. It is important to note that these courses will not count in the calculation for grade point average (G.P.A.), summed quality points or class rank. These courses are taken for enrichment only. These courses cannot supplant or replace any New Jersey State Department of Education requirement or local Lakeland Regional High School requirement. For documentation purposes, and to have the course included in the student’s permanent record and listed on the final transcript, upon successful completion, documentation must be forwarded to Lakeland Regional High School. DUAL ENROLLMENT: LOCAL COLLEGES (Off-Site): Lakeland Regional High School students have the opportunity to enroll as a non-matriculated student at local colleges. Students may take courses for enrichment and/or to meet a state requirement. Any student who supplants an offsite college course to meet a state requirement MUST follow school procedures to ensure all approvals have been met. Only courses taken to replace state of New Jersey requirements will be included in GPA and class rank, and will be treated as Standard level academic courses. All other courses will be taken for enrichment only. Students may also only supplant as many courses (total of 8) at LRHS and offsite at local colleges that would provide them with a full schedule. Students are encouraged to take as many courses as the college will permit for enrichment. Students MUST sign up for these courses no later than 3 weeks prior to the beginning of the semester they plan to enroll. Students failing to follow through on courses at local colleges without meeting the minimum course requirement or withdrawing from the course within the proper course drop timelines will receive a withdraw failing. As of the publication of this curriculum guide, Lakeland Regional High School has partnered with Passaic County Community College (PCCC) with courses at a cost of $60 per credit and Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) that will allow our students to take mathematics and engineering based courses at FDU – Teaneck at a cost of $105 per credit. Please see the guidance website for a copy of the Dual Enrollment form and procedures, and contact your school counselor to continue the process. PROJECT ACCELERATION (On-site) Lakeland Regional High School, in conjunction with Seton Hall University, is participating in Project Acceleration. If a student opts to participate, the student may receive 3 college credits from Seton Hall University. By enrolling in Lakeland’s Studying Film class, a student who receives a grade of “C” or better will receive credit for Seton Hall’s Introduction to Visual Theory course. The cost is approximately $180.00 ($60.00) per credit. All tuition and fees are the responsibility of the parent/student. Currently Studying Film is the only course in Project Acceleration. If additional courses become part of Project Acceleration, information will be made available through the guidance office. Any Lakeland course taken as part of the Project Acceleration program will be placed in its current course level designation. Please refer to the course level chart on page 10. 14 INDEPENDENT STUDY Students wishing to study a subject not offered as part of the regular curriculum, who demonstrate the seriousness of purpose, ability, and maturity required, may be permitted to undertake independent study. An Independent Study may not be taken to supplant a local Lakeland Regional High School or New Jersey State required course. Please refer to the required courses on page 3. An appropriate program shall be selected for participating students by the teaching staff advisor, area supervisor, guidance counselor, and the student. Credit will be assigned according to the specific objectives met or the amount of time spent, whichever is better suited to the particular topic. A minimum of one credit shall be awarded for the successful completion of an independent study course. An independent study course must be approved within the first two weeks of the quarter in which the course is offered, in order to receive full credit. Independent study courses receive a grade and credit but are not used to determine GPA or class rank. Each independent study course will be subject to approval by the principal and will be made part of the student's record. The principal, in consultation with the curriculum coordinator, is authorized to make exceptions to the above when in his/her opinion there is extremely clear evidence and a valid reason to permit an independent study course to be offered as part of the regular curriculum. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ELIGIBILITY NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is designed to honor students who have distinguished themselves in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. After students become members of the NHS, they are reviewed periodically by faculty and must maintain the high standards of the Society. It is primarily a service organization thus members are expected to participate in our Chapter’s projects as well as attend its monthly meetings. The Lakeland Chapter of the National Honor Society is actively affiliated with the national office of NHS which is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The Lakeland Chapter follows the selection procedures established by the national office. The principal of Lakeland Regional High School is a member of NASSP. His membership appoints him as one of the advisors to Lakeland’s Chapter of the NHS. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SELECTION PROCESS 1. Students are considered for membership in the Fall Semester of their junior and senior year. 2. A student must have been in the Lakeland School system for at least one semester. 3. Scholarship Requirement: A student must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA. 4. Character and Leadership Requirement: All faculty members will be asked to evaluate eligible students on their character and leadership by choosing a value on a scale from 1(poor) to 4(superior) and to submit written comments for a low rating (1 or 2). A student should receive an average score of at least 2.7 in each category. 15 5. Service Requirement: A student must demonstrate above average service and leadership by participating in school and community clubs and activities. Community Service Requirement: A student must provide documentation for at least one of the following per year since entering high school. • Participation in a community service organization, such as: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Church Ministry, Emergency/Medical Services Volunteer, or Community Recreation Team Coach. • Participation in at least two community service events, such as: Walk-a-thons, Safety Town, and Caring for Ringwood Day. For all service performed after June 2009, this will be revised to a minimum of 10 hours of community service instead of at least two community service events. The documentation must be one of the following; • An official certificate with date, signature, and number of hours of service performed. • A letter on official letterhead signed and dated by an executive member of the organization which includes a description of the activity and the number of hours required to complete the activity. • A leadership position in any organization must be verified in the documentation. 6. 7. 8. Their performance on the language arts, mathematics and science sections of these assessments, as well as overall performance during their eighth grade school year, are key factors to be considered for placement. Those who fall below the minimum levels of proficiency are placed in classes, which will help them develop competence in the state core content standards. These classes include: HSPA Language Arts Prep, and HSPA Mathematics Prep. The classes are part of the Basic Skills Improvement Program at Lakeland. Ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students who need remediation based on their performance in class will also be assigned to classes to help them master the core content standards and succeed on the New Jersey End of Course Competency Assessments and on the HSPA examination. Students take New Jersey Biology Competency Test (NJBCT) in high school during the year in which they take Biology for the first time. Students MUST pass this assessment beginning with the Class of 2014 as a requirement for a high school diploma. Students will also take the HSPA (High School Proficiency Assessment) in the eleventh grade. Students must pass this statewide proficiency examination in language arts literacy and mathematics as a requirement for a high school diploma. Students who fail any section of the test will be assigned to HSPA Math Prep, HSPA Language Arts Prep and/or HSPA Science Prep courses until they have passed the test or successfully completed the Alternative High School Assessment (AHSA). As the State of New Jersey expands the scope and depth of testing in the core content areas, students will have to meet the new requirements. RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS Students must reside in Ringwood or Wanaque with their parents or legal guardians. When applying to attend the school, parents/guardians must show three proofs of residency such as house deed, rent receipt, rent lease or contract, utility bills, bank statements with address, voting records, income tax returns, driver’s license, landlord sworn statement, current department store bills, other valid legal evidence. COUNSELOR ASSIGNMENTS A student's school counselor is determined alphabetically. Consult the student schedule for the name of the grade counselor. Each student at Lakeland has a school counselor who serves the student in the development of educational and career plans. The counselor is a valuable resource in selecting appropriate courses, investigating various careers, and planning for the future. In group guidance and individual conferences, counselors inform students of opportunities and requirements and assist students as they set goals. In order to make wise choices, students must be aware of their own interests and abilities. Various tests are given which aim at developing a greater self-understanding on the part of the student. The office is open each day until 3:15 p.m. during the regular school year. SCHEDULE CHANGE POLICY: STUDENT-PARENT INITIATED I. CHANGES PRIOR TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR Students should carefully consider the courses they want to take at the time they receive the course selections. This is very important because opportunities for change become more limited after the time of scheduling. Students may make any reasonable course change from the time the schedule is made up to and including the last day of school in June. This is provided that the maximum enrollment of the desired course has not been reached and parental approval is received. II. CHANGES DURING THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR A. Students may drop a subject and take a study hall if all of the conditions in A and B are met: 1. There is an educationally beneficial reason. 2. A parental note of approval is received. 3. The course to be dropped is not required for graduation. 4. Seniors must carry a minimum of 30 credits after the drop. 5. All underclassmen must carry a minimum of 40 credits. B. There will be no student-parent initiated subject drop for a study hall after three weeks into a quarter course or six weeks into a semester course. C. Changes from one subject to another subject: After September 1, a student-parent initiated request to drop one subject and take another may be granted under the following conditions: 1. There is an educationally beneficial reason for the change. 2. A conference is held among the parent, counselor, and teacher or supervisor regarding the benefits and the feasibility of the change. 3. The counselor will record pertinent facts of the conference on the appropriate form and make a recommendation. The report is to be reviewed by the Director of Guidance, who will make a recommendation. The report will then be reviewed by the Principal, who will make the decision. 4. If a change is made, all course work for the new subject must be made up by the student. 5. Changes from one subject to another will not be made if the change would result in exceeding the board regulation on class size in any given course or section of a course. 6. There will be no student-parent initiated subject drop from one subject to another beyond the first week of school. D. Student – parent initiated schedule changes from a higher level to a lower level of the same course must meet the following conditions: 1. 2 3. The report is to be reviewed by the Director of Guidance, who will make a recommendation. The report will then be reviewed by the Principal, who will make the decision. 4. If a change is made, the student is expected to meet the expectations of the course and will not be allowed to change back to the lower level during the course of that semester. 5. Changes from one subject to another will not be made if the change would result in exceeding the board regulation on class size in any given course or section of a course. 6. The change must be made prior to the first day of the course offering and will not be allowed mid-term. 7. Students will not be permitted to progress more than one level (i.e. change from Academic to Honors). F. Nothing in the above is to prevent the Principal or Guidance Director from making an exception, when, in their professional judgment, there is clear evidence and a valid reason for a change. GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM Lakeland provides opportunities for gifted and talented students who demonstrate exceptionally high intellectual aptitude or academic achievements as well as those students who exhibit superior performance level skills in the arts. The program focuses on three areas of giftedness: students with general intellectual ability; with a specific academic knowledge; and with talent in the disciplines of art, music, voice, creative writing, or dramatics. Academically gifted students should enroll in premium level courses which receive additional academic weight. The secondary phase of the Gifted and Talented program features enrichment activities. The Gifted and Talented Coordinator invites and encourages identified students to participate in a wide array of extracurricular opportunities. These activities are coordinated in conjunction with the administration, guidance personnel, and the staff at large. There is a lengthy and diverse list of activities available to the students. They include such programs as the The MSG Varsity Challenge, Odyssey of the Mind, Liberty Science Center's program "Live from...", and The Governor's School. Lakeland’s Gifted and Talented program is also involved in the Passaic County Gifted and Talented High School Consortium which provides further activities for the students to interact with gifted individuals from other high schools in northern New Jersey. Throughout the year various field trips are offered in diverse areas to appeal to all students in the program including: Broadway Musicals, The Bodies Exhibition, The Mutter Museum, special Exhibitions in NYC, Art Museums and more. 20 INTEGRATED CURRICULA The following courses incorporate the best thinking, knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines. Through team teaching and other innovative techniques, students are afforded unique opportunities. The courses described in this section of the curriculum handbook are part of a conscious effort to enable students to see the connections between various disciplines as well as the role of technology in enhancing learning. REQUIRED COURSES: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER APPLICATIONS - This computer literacy course offers the student an opportunity to study the various systems and computer equipment used in the work place. This interdepartmental course, team-taught between the business and technology education departments, will provide students with an understanding of the use of computer hardware and software by using a variety of applications. Students will be provided with the skills necessary to create reports, charts, and publication materials. They will be introduced to word processing, database and spreadsheet programs; desktop publishing software, scanners, laser printers, computer assisted drafting equipment, computer controlled devices such as robots and small machines as well as the multimedia equipment. (This course is part of the computer literacy requirement.) Grade 9 2 1/2 credits S.C.O.P.E. - SCHOOL, CAREER ORIENTATION AND PERSONAL EDUCATION - Being successful in high school and preparing for further education and work requires knowledge, planning, and skills. This course will begin the process by helping students understand their perspectives, aptitudes, and learning styles. Students will begin their career preparation process by a personal assessment and career awareness. This course will develop the foundation for a career strategy process to include the development of a workplace profile and an educational plan incorporating personal and family goals that can lead to a positive school experience and career transition. Some of the topics included in this course are: personal development, planning and goal setting, learning styles, decision making, effective study skills, speech, and the process of selecting and planning for a career. The career strategy process developed should create a greater relevance for the student’s entire educational experience and provide for a positive transition to their future career choices. This course may be team taught by teachers from various disciplines. Grade 9 2 1/2 credits ELECTIVE COURSES: PUBLICATIONS 1 - Opportunities for students to develop creative talents in the areas of journalistic writing through printed publications is the goal of this course. In conjunction with production of The Lancer Ledger, students learn news writing and news gathering, as well as editing, proofreading, layout and design. Basic composition skills are required. Students also learn production techniques for various other media. Computer skills are developed as students learn to work professionally with Adobe InDesign for layout and Adobe Photoshop for graphics. Prerequisites: “B” or better in Standard Level English courses, and “C” or better in Premium Level English courses. Grades 10-12 5 credits 21 PUBLICATIONS 2 – Publications 2 students continue the practical application of journalism skills as they serve as editors for The Lancer Ledger. Advanced topics in editorial writing, sports writing and headline writing are taught. Writing and layout skills are sharpened by developing brochures, guidebooks and newsletters. Students learn advanced features in Adobe InDesign and Adobe PhotoShop and create forms in Adobe Professional to collect data and analyze in Microsoft Excel. Students also create various portable document format (pdf) files. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Publications 1 Grades 10-12 5 credits * Publications 1 and 2 may be team taught by the English and Business Education departments. * ART An education in the arts, an essential component of the 21st century curriculum, fosters achievement of personal, intellectual, social, economic and human growth. The visual arts help to develop students who are creative and innovative and who possess varied and powerful ways of communicating ideas, thoughts and feelings. Knowledge of the arts enriches understanding of the human experience across cultures and histories, provides valuable tools to enhance learning across all disciplines and empowers people to create, reshape and fully participate in personal and community environments, enhancing the quality of life for all. The Art Department seeks to educate all Lakeland students, whether they are artistically talented, career-oriented, or casually interested art students. To meet a wide range of interests and abilities, the visual arts curriculum provides a wide variety of offerings. In addition, art students are encouraged to participate in various art shows and competitions held throughout the year. Extracurricular visual arts experiences, open to all students at Lakeland, are available through the Art Club and the Photography Club. The Lakeland Regional High School art curriculum addresses the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards. Hands-on problem-solving experiences develop the creative abilities and technical skills necessary for life and work in the 21st century. Studio-based method fosters higher-level critical thinking and production skills. Study in the visual arts teaches students to shape and build an aesthetically sound future in an increasingly complex technological society. The study of the visual arts also prepares them to participate in a culturally diverse society and to evaluate the human condition. All art students will develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the impact that art has on their lives. A student desiring to pursue a career in art will be provided with the necessary experiences. To assist juniors and seniors interested in pursuing careers in art, the Art Department offers advanced classes, portfolio development, and independent studies. *Art 1 is a prerequisite for all art courses excluding Art History AP, Ceramics and Sculpture and Fashion Illustration and Design. Students planning to pursue an Art curriculum should select Art 1 as their initial course. ART 1 - This course is truly for the beginner. This hands-on course introduces the students to a variety of tools, materials, and methods used in creative artwork. The elements of design are taught as students explore contemporary and traditional artists and how their work has impacted our lives and culture. Cultural perspectives will be explored and critiqued through lectures, exciting project work, multimedia experiences and field trips. Grades 9 - 12 5 credits 22 CERAMICS AND SCULPTURE - Technique, form and content provide the basis for an introduction to ceramics and sculpture. Students of varying ability are encouraged to explore their own style. This course begins with clay hand building and wheel throwing techniques and moves on to clay modeling, casting, paper, plaster and wood sculpting. Students will learn the principles that go into sculpting and modeling both functional and decorative objects based upon art history. A mature approach to materials and tools is required for this course. Grades 9 - 12 5 credits FASHION ILLUSTRATION AND DESIGN - This introductory art course will teach students basic drawing techniques unique to the fashion industry. In addition, students will develop the ability to communicate design ideas in a fashion sketch through garment details, silhouettes, and basic color theory. Students will study styles and trends, create style boards, and produce a collection of fashion designs. The history of fashion and its connection to current designers, as well as the real life application of fashion as a career, will also be explored. Prior drawing experience is not necessary. Grades 10 - 12 5 credits ART 2 - This course presents a more involved approach for the advancing art student. Students will continue to build on the elements of design and works of artists learned in Art 1. Students will explore the principles of design and further develop their own skills and ideas with teacher assistance. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 1 Grades 10 - 12 5 credits DRAWING AND PAINTING - This course is designed for students who want to advance their skills in drawing and painting. Each student¹s skill will be developed through various approaches in drawing the human figure, portraits, landscapes and still life. While developing sketches, studies and finished drawings, students will become aware of the possibilities and limitations of various drawing materials. Painting materials, methods, and techniques in watercolor, acrylic and mixed media are explored as students are encouraged to express their own ideas through their work. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Art 1 Grades 10-12 5 credits GRAPHIC DESIGN – This course is designed for students interested in a future career in the graphic design field. Creativity and technical know-how come together in this class. A step-by-step process of problem solving will come into play when challenged to design logos, packaging, layouts, letterheads, and various other graphic design projects. Students will use both traditional design tools as well as computers. The computer programs explored in this class include Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Students will gain knowledge of the history of design as well as the latest technology. Artistic ability and drawing skills are required for this class. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Art 1 Grade 10 - 12 5 credits STUDIO ART - With its emphasis on visual problem solving, creative thinking and cooperative projects, Studio Art offers the advanced art student an opportunity to incorporate a variety of stimulating and meaningful new studio experiences into their artwork. This course encourages a higher level of thinking and increased technical proficiency. Students will explore subjects such as self, community, and culture. This course concentrates on portfolio preparation and careers in the field of art. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Art 1 and a “C” or better in Art 2 or Drawing and Painting Grades 11-12 5 credits 23 PHOTOGRAPHY 1 - Learn to see with a camera as a means for mastering the elements of photographic design. A brief history of photography and explanation of the inner workings of a camera will be covered. The technical aspects of black and white photography such as film developing and print processing are a major portion of the class. Genres may include still life, portrait, action photos, nature and more. Line, texture, shape, motion and perspective are emphasized. Students will learn the guidelines for composing and evaluating photography as an artistic form of expression. Students will learn to be global creative thinkers while evaluating possible photography career paths through assignment. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 1 Grades 11-12 5 credits PHOTOGRAPHY 2 – This course presents an in-depth approach for the advanced art student. Students will continue to build on the visual elements of photography, the art of composition and works of photographers learned in Photography 1. Students will research, study, and explore the many possible career paths of Photography. Students will investigate genres and master that genre in preparation for the creation of their art portfolio. Digital photography will also be introduced by focusing on their genre of choice. This course will further develop their creative skills and ideas with teacher guidance. Basic computer knowledge is beneficial. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 1 and Photography 1 with a “C” or better. Students will examine and critically analyze major forms of artistic expression from the past and the present from a variety of cultures. Visual analysis is the fundamental tool of the art historian. Art history also emphasizes the understanding of works in context, considering such issues as patronage, gender, and the functions and effects or works of art. We live in an age of exploding knowledge and rapid change in technology, information exchange, and communications. The changes that are taking place in our society have increased the demand for internationally and electronically competitive workers and for an educational system designed to meet that demand. In addition, the student will identify suggested uses for their portfolio in the work world and college admission process. The balance of the course will concentrate on providing students those skills they will need to obtain employment, become successful employees, be part of a team, and the personal money management skills to be an intelligent and savvy consumer. This course will serve as a background for understanding the private enterprise system, assist with consumer decision making, preparation for future employment, and help them to effectively perform their responsibilities as citizens. In addition, students will complete several projects which will allow application of the concepts they have learned in the course. All students enrolled in the course are eligible for participation in the Distributive Education Clubs of America. Grades 9-12 5 credits SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT/E-COMMERCE - Small Business Management/E-Commerce will provide students with a working knowledge of the entrepreneurial process as related to the establishment of their own business. The course will be centered on the establishment of a written business plan proposal, oral presentation for financing of the proposed business and the development of an e-commerce web site for the business. Topics include the development of the business concept, business description, financing, marketing, staffing, as well as the role of e-commerce as a business tool to compliment traditional business activities. Students will be eligible to enter their business plan in the Distributive Education Clubs of America competitions. Grades 10-12 5 credits 25 KEYBOARDING AND COMPUTER ESSENTIALS – This course will provide proficiency in various software programs with an emphasis on information technology applications. Included will be touch keying skills, composing and formatting various types of documents and advanced skills in the Microsoft Office 2007 Suite. The goal is to provide hands-on training for students in the use of the computer as an effective tool in accessing, analyzing, organizing and retrieving information quickly and efficiently through real-life problem-solving activities. Additional topics will include: internet safety, online banking, online bill pay, Email protocol, letter composition, Internet search tips and MS Excel, Ms Access, organization/filing systems, personal and professional communications. Grades 9-12 5 credits ACCOUNTING 1 – This course provides a hands-on approach to learn the fundamentals of accounting using both manual and computerized systems. Objectives include learning the accounting equation and Taccounts, journalizing transactions in both general and special journals, posting transactions in general and subsidiary ledgers, understanding worksheets, completing financial statements, accounting for payroll, reconciling bank statements, and accounting for merchandise. Students will apply these concepts to work through the accounting cycle for a service business established as a proprietorship as well as a merchandising business set up as a corporation. Students will complete a number of mini-practice sets as well as a simulation project. Computerized accounting is learned by integrating the practical accounting problems in our class work with the popular Quick Books® software program. Grades 10-12 5 credits ACCOUNTING 2 – This advanced course builds upon the concepts learned in Accounting 1. It includes accounting for special procedures, plant assets and depreciation, uncollectible accounts, merchandise inventories, notes payable, notes receivable, and partnership accounting. Students will complete minipractice sets and a simulation project. The popular Quick Books® computer software program is also used to explore the more complex topics of this course. Grades 11-12 5 credits MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS 1 - Multimedia Presentations will provide integration of text, sound, graphics, animations, and moving video to create knowledgeable and impressive presentations. Through extensive exploration in multimedia applications, students will learn to make informative and stimulating presentations. A full cycle in the preparation of media in business will be covered from the design of a product or service, to producing a commercial, to developing a PowerPoint presentation, and finally a multimedia internet web page. Students will develop the necessary skills and tools that can be applied to making successful presentations for the business world and college. Students will work with a variety of multimedia programs including: Adobe Premiere, Adobe PhotoShop, PowerPoint, FrontPage and video and sound capture programs. Grades 10-12 5 credits 26 MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS 2 – This course will provide the student with the advanced skills and knowledge essential to graphic animation, dynamic web design, and interactive media. Students will expand their knowledge of the following software packages: Adobe Photo Shop and Premiere, Microsoft Power Point and will be introduced to Dreamweaver/CSS and Flash. Students will be involved in designing websites and streaming videos which will include animations and Flash routines. The completed class projects will incorporate advanced skills and techniques learned in the various software packages. This course will provide a solid background and structure for those interested in American and world economics and financial concepts and topics. Grades 10-12 5 credits THE BUSINESS PRACTICE FIRM - The Business Practice Firm (BPF) is a simulated business that mirrors the real world. The BPF is a company set up by students which functions like a “real” business. The BPF conducts all operations necessary to run a business: finance, purchasing, marketing, and human resources. In an authentic office setting, the student/employee engages in simulated business transactions with other firms both here and abroad through the internet. The class is a hands-on approach where students take responsibility for their own learning. Recommendation: “C” in one of the following courses – Accounting, Finance/Economics, Introduction to Business, Marketing or Multimedia Grade 12 5 credits BUSINESS MATHEMATICS - The first section of the course is a review of basic fundamentals. The following sections deal with the mathematics of business. Areas covered are payrolls, discounts, insurance, installment buying, selling, taxes, investment and consumer applications, and related banking services. Grades 10-12 5 credits BUSINESS LAW - This course offers students a knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities in common business transactions and situations. This course will include an overview of legal concepts followed by an in-depth study of the law of assignment, delegation and breach of contract. Other major areas of study will include employment contracts, rights of minors in contractual situations, warranties, real estate, credit laws, identity theft, consumer protection, personal property, intellectual property, bailment, insurance agreements, agency, employment contacts, home and automobile agreements and negotiable instruments. Students will be made aware of how laws vary between states and countries. This course stresses laws that govern everyday life events. Grades 11-12 5 credits 27 ENGLISH The Lakeland Regional High School recognizes the need to provide an effective program that enables students to develop the reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills that will allow them to succeed in college and in the workplace. In this endeavor we take our cue from the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts which seek to integrate these skills into every course. This integration must reflect cultural diversity, must address the technological advances in communication, and must incorporate critical thinking skills. The English Department offers students a comprehensive program which includes the continued development of language arts skills, major writing units, the study of classic and modern works of literature and the development of informational literacy. The appreciation of fine literature as a reflection of the human experience and as a leisure time activity is a major goal of the program as well. The English Department offers electives in Classical Mythology, Creative Writing, Great Women Writers, Plays and Playwrights, and Verbal SAT Skills and Strategies and also participates in the Integrated Curricula offerings in S.C.O.P.E., Publications and Gifted and Talented Senior Seminar. Students needing Language Arts remediation will be scheduled for HSPA Prep and Language Arts Literacy classes in addition to their regular English course. IMPORTANT NOTE – Required English courses are offered on several different levels of academic rigor. Students are enrolled in the course which best meets their needs and abilities as determined by demonstrated skills and abilities, teacher/counselor recommendations and standardized test scores, with supervisor approval. The levels of English are as follows: FOUNDATIONS LEVEL – This modified level program is for those students who have not yet demonstrated grade level language arts skills and abilities. In these modified level courses, students use literature to develop their proficiencies in the language arts. Emphasis is placed on the reinforcement of language arts skills most frequently measured on standardized tests. Such skills include reading comprehension, expository writing and critical thinking. Classroom activities are also designed to improve speaking, listening, note-taking and other study skills. APPLIED LEVEL – These college preparatory level courses are appropriate for college-bound students who meet grade level expectations. These courses integrate the study of literature with instruction in the language arts, research, and critical thinking skills needed for academic success. In these courses students are also prepared to perform successfully on the HSPA and SAT standardized tests. ACADEMIC LEVEL – These college preparatory level courses are designed to provide a more rigorous workload for college-bound students. This level is appropriate for students who have a greater mastery of reading, writing, and critical thinking and have a higher degree of motivation in the study of literature. These courses include more demanding reading and writing assignments, examine topics in greater depth and require a more intensive level of critical thinking than Applied level courses. In these courses students are also prepared to perform successfully on the HSPA and SAT standardized tests. HONORS/ADVANCED PLACEMENT. These premium level courses are limited to our most capable and conscientious students. These students are not only intellectually curious, but also possess the highest levels of reading and writing skills and demonstrate understanding of abstractions. They also take responsibility for their own learning by fulfilling their obligations and performing to their potential. The four-year program of study prepares students by their senior year to compose tightly focused, insightful and coherent essays required on the English Literature Advanced Placement Examination and in college level work. Summer reading is a requirement and will be counted as a major graded assignment. Prerequisite: “A” in Standard Level English courses, or “B” or better in Premium Level English course or demonstrated mastery of appropriate language arts skills. 28 REQUIRED COURSES ENGLISH 1 (FOUNDATIONS, APPLIED, ACADEMIC, HONORS) – The course of study in English 1 provides a firm foundation in the language arts. Selections from various literary genres are used as the basis for units which address the NJ Language Arts Literacy Standards. These core curriculum standards are developed through a thorough review of those language arts skills including grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading and writing. Other units of study include an overview of informational literacy skills and an introduction to public speaking. 5 credits ENGLISH 2 (APPLIED, ACADEMIC, HONORS) – The course of study in English 2 focuses on the appreciation of American Literature and continues student development of the NJ Standards in Language Arts Literacy. The critical analysis of literature is a primary focus of writing and research projects. Students will learn how to integrate primary and secondary sources in MLA format. Curricular units include grammar, vocabulary, speech, writing and critical reading. 5 credits ENGLISH 2 LANGUAGE ARTS LITERACY (APPLIED) – All sophomores who have not achieved minimum proficiency levels in either reading or writing, as measured by the ”S” test administered in grade 9 are enrolled in English 2 Language Arts Literacy. This 10 credit, standard level course combines the traditional English 2 Applied curriculum with intensive work on the critical reading, writing, and thinking skills that students must master for success on the HSPA and the SAT. Direct instruction in reading comprehension, grammar and usage, writing, vocabulary, and study skills will be integrated into the study of American literature. Upon the successful completion of English 2 Language Arts Literacy, a student will earn 5 credits toward the 20 credit English graduation requirement and 5 elective credits. 10 credits ENGLISH 3 (FOUNDATIONS, APPLIED, ACADEMIC, HONORS) – The curriculum in English 3 offers a study of British Literature as the foundation for the reinforcement and refinement of NJ Language Arts Literacy Standards. Literature units focus on critical reading and thinking skills and offer a variety of opportunities for writing and speaking. Projects are designed to promote student creativity, technologybased research and a deeper understanding of literary forms. Also included are special units of study to prepare students for the HSPA, PSAT and SAT. 5 credits ENGLISH 4 (FOUNDATIONS, APPLIED, ACADEMIC, ADVANCED PLACEMENT) – The course of study in English 4 focuses on the study of World Literature as a reflection of multicultural experience and rhetorical writing. Critical thinking, research, writing and technology skills are reinforced through literaturebased assignments and expository writing, as well as practical applications related to college and/or work. Basic Skills Improvement Program Students who, by their performance, have been identified as needing concentrated work in basic skills may be assigned to one of the courses listed below. The assessment process for enrollment in these classes relies upon student performance on statewide and standardized tests. These classes offer individual and small group instruction and are scheduled in addition to the student’s regular English class. 29 NINTH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS LITERACY – Freshman students not achieving a proficient or higher score on the Language Arts portion of the NJASK are scheduled into this course. This required lunch/study ribbon course supplements the 20 credits of English required for graduation. Students receive individual help as well as work in small groups to master the skills needed for success on the HSPA, a state-wide test required for graduation. Students earn elective credit in this course. Grade 9 2 ½ credits HSPA LANGUAGE ARTS 11 – All Juniors who have not achieved minimum proficiency levels in either reading or writing are enrolled in this course. This course provides instruction, in a small group setting, in the skills needed for success on the HSPA Language Arts test, the state-wide test required for graduation. Emphasis is placed on critical reading, persuasive writing, and test-taking strategies. Grade 11 2 ½ credits AHSA/LANGUAGE ARTS HSPA PREP – Students who have failed the Language Arts literacy portion of the HSPA are scheduled for this course in their senior year. An individualized program is developed for each student to practice and reinforce the reading and/or writing skills needed for success on the HSPA and/or the Alternative High School Assessment (AHSA). Students can earn elective credit for as many semesters as they are enrolled. Grades 10-12 5 credits CREATIVE WRITING - This course is designed for those students who are interested in language as a means of creative expression. Through the study of literary techniques and models, students will explore various forms of prose and poetry. In this writing workshop, students will be encouraged to develop an authentic voice as they experiment with a variety of narrative, dramatic and poetic forms. The only prerequisite is a desire to write. Grades 9 - 12 5 credits GREAT WOMEN WRITERS – This seminar style course will encourage the discussion, thoughtful analysis and collaborative exploration of important literary works by women writers. Through a chronological study of literature, this course will examine women authors and their characters, themes and styles. Students will develop the ability to think critically about the influences of culture, ethnicity, class, gender and religion on literature. While Great Women Writers will primarily focus on the novel, students will also explore letters, poems, short stories and other genres. Grades 10-12 5 credits 30 PLAYS AND PLAYWRIGHTS: THE BARD TO BROADWAY – This elective course will provide a basic introduction to the varied aspects of plays, playwrights, and the art of drama. Students will study a brief history of the development of the dramatic form with a focus on major playwrights and innovations. Using Shakespeare’s work as a bridge between play analysis and performance, students will experiment with a variety of dramatic forms, write scripts and perform their original work. This course is valuable for any student interested in gaining practice and a better understanding of communication techniques and/or the elements of dramatic literature. Grades 9-12 5 credits VERBAL SAT SKILLS AND STRATEGIES - This course is intended for college-bound students wishing to further refine and develop their writing, critical reading and vocabulary skills. Emphasis is on the preparation for the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the SAT through means of a personalized portfolio of study, instruction in test-taking strategies, and drill and practice. Students enrolling in this course must also enroll in the MATH SAT PREP course offered by the Math Department. Grades 10-12 2 ½ credits FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES It is the philosophy of Family and Consumer Sciences to improve the quality of life by encouraging independent and critical thinking skills, developing competencies to make intelligent choices, and applying learned principles to new situations. Family and Consumer Sciences seeks to empower students to function effectively and maintain meaningful lives in very confusing times by teaching them to secure and use technological resources in the process of achieving these goals. Family and Consumer Sciences prepares individuals to carry out dual role responsibilities in the home and workplace. The Family and Consumer Sciences Department provides both male and female students with skills and competencies that will help them become well-rounded and self-sufficient adults. The department offers courses in four areas. The first area, Food and Nutrition, covers culinary arts in America and foreign countries. Also, nutritious and attractive meals are planned and prepared in a laboratory-based environment. The second area, Personal and Family Relations, focuses on understanding the individual and relationships with others. Some topics included are: communication skills, decision making, and dating and marriage. The third area, Early Childhood Education, trains students to become teachers' aides by combining learning theories with practical experience in the teaching of an in-house nursery school at Lakeland. The fourth area, the Fashion Industry and Decorating, encourages students to use their talents and creativity to design, construct and evaluate clothing, wardrobes, and home interiors. Computer assisted instruction is used throughout the department to supplement regular course work. FOODS - The purpose of this course is to teach kitchen safety, sanitation and cooking techniques. Nutrition, healthy eating, food science principles and food history are explored. Lab activities stress management skills, problem solving and team cooperation. Students will use the internet for web quests and power point projects. Grades 9-12 5 credits 31 WORLD CUISINE & CULTURE - The students will be introduced to the food, customs and cultures that influence global cuisine. Traditional foods and preparation techniques will be studied while emphasizing the history perspectives of the various cultures. American, French, Italian, Chinese, and German are some of the cuisines and cultures which will be studied. Multicultural awareness will be enriched by participating in the food preparation and focusing on each cultures’ past and present traditions. Prerequisite: "C" or better in Foods Grades 10-12 5 credits INSIDE THE FASHION INDUSTRY - This course explores the subject of fashion--its basic principles, history and development, current trends, consumer practice and the fashion industry. It provides an up-todate guide to the fundamentals of fashion and the application of these to the merchandising of fashion apparel and accessories for one's self and future employment opportunities. Internet research and computer software enhances learning. Grades 10-12 5 credits PERSONAL AND FAMILY RELATIONS - Students will learn to understand themselves, their relationships with others, and their future relationships. Units of study will include goals and decision making, communication skills, changing roles, dating, management of conflict and crisis, preparation for marriage, parenthood and family life. Learn survival skills and guidelines to help ease the transition to adult responsibilities and independent living. Videos, discussions, internet research, and baby think it over project are incorporated to simulate real-life experiences. Grades 10-12 5 credits EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION - Study various theories of child development and apply them to the daily interaction and teaching relationships with children. Students will develop knowledge, skills and a feeling of confidence necessary to facilitate a child's learning while teaching in a 16-week nursery school program. Grades 10-12 5 credits DECORATING SPACES - Learn to express your individuality through the use of the decorator's tools. This hands-on course will focus upon the principles and elements of design, floor plans, furniture layouts and styles, color schemes, floor and wall coverings, window treatments, lighting and accessories. Videos, discussions, computer software and internet exploration are infused throughout the course. Grades 10-12 5 credits 32 MATHEMATICS The goal of the program at Lakeland echoes the vision of the Common Core State Standards Initiative – Preparing America’s Students for College & Career. These standards define what students should understand and be able to do in their study of mathematics. It aims to enable all students to move through the twenty-first century with the mathematical skills and understandings that are needed to be successful in their careers and daily lives. Problem solving and active learning are incorporated in all courses. All students receive preparation for success on the High School Proficiency Assessment, PSAT and SAT. State requirements mandate 15 credits in math for high school graduation. These credits must include: algebra I content, geometry content and a third year of math that builds upon Algebra I and Geometry and prepares students for college and 21st century careers. Lakeland’s curriculum offers a wide range of achievement levels to meet the current needs and future goals of our students. Math electives are also available in Computer science, Math SAT Prep, Statistics, as well as AP courses in Calculus, Computer Science and Statistics. School Counselors and Math teachers assist students with proper placement recommendations based on course and testing history and future career/college plans. Students are encouraged to enroll in the most challenging course in which they can be successful. CALCULATOR POLICY Any student enrolled in a mathematics course at Lakeland Regional is required to have a Texas Instrument TI-83Plus or higher graphing calculator. The graphing calculator will be used in mathematics courses throughout the curriculum. 33 ALGEBRA 1 - This course introduces the algebraic structure of the real number system. It applies the basic properties of this algebraic structure to the study of equations, inequalities and polynomials. This course includes graphing of equations, inequalities, a study of functions, operations with polynomials, linear systems, properties of exponents and radicals. Prerequisite: C or better in Pre Algebra and Proficient in ASK8 Grade 9 5 Credits ALGEBRA 1 FOUNDATIONS - This course is intended for students who need a stronger base in mathematics as they begin high school. The course focuses on traditional Algebra I concepts but at a slower pace. In the preliminary unit, the concentration is on developing stronger mathematical fundamentals before progressing into the traditional algebra course of study. The following algebraic topics will be covered: operations with integers, real numbers and variables; solving equations, inequalities and systems of equations; operations on functions; developing and using formulas; effective problem solving and data analysis; graphing on the number line and the Cartesian plane; recognizing functions as opposed to relations; and the use of exponents and radicals in algebraic equations. Grade 9 5 Credits GEOMETRY HONORS - This course introduces the elements of deductive proof, angle relationships, and parallel and perpendicular line properties. The concepts of polygons, including triangles and quadrilaterals, and finding the area of these figures will be studied. The concept of congruent polygons and similar polygons will be examined. Volume and surface area of three dimensional figures will also be studied. Students will study the properties of circles, and an introduction to right triangle trigonometry will be presented. It is a standard level course, but the pace is slower than in the regular geometry course. Various strands of mathematics, which are part of the state core content standards in math, are integrated into the course of study. Volume and surface area of three dimensional figures will also be studied. It expands the study of relations and functions to include the composition of functions, piecewise, absolute value, inverse, exponential, logarithmic, and polynomial functions. It studies the graphs of the above mentioned functions, solutions of polynomial equations, matrices, and extends the number system to include complex numbers. Prerequisite: B or better in Geometry Honors or an A in Geometry Grade 10-11 5 Credits ALGEBRA 2 - This course extends the real number system presented in Algebra 1. It expands the study of relations and functions to include the composition of functions, piecewise, absolute value, inverse, and exponential functions. It studies the graphs of the abovementioned functions, solutions of polynomial equations, matrices, an in-depth study of quadratic functions including the quadratic formula, and extends the number system to include complex numbers. Prerequisite: C or better in Geometry Grades 10-11 5 Credits ALGEBRA 2 APPLIED - The course will build on the knowledge, skills and understanding developed in Algebra 1. It introduces the study of relations and functions to include the composition of functions, piecewise, absolute value, inverse, and exponential functions. Mastery of skills needed for the High School Proficiency Assessment will be reviewed in depth. Prerequisite: Successful completion Geometry or Geometry Applied Grades 10 -12 5 credits ALGEBRA 2 FOUNDATIONS - This course reviews the basic structure of Algebra and the real number system. Emphasis is on relations and functions and their graphs, including inequalities, linear equations, and quadratic functions. Students will study matrix operations and solving linear equations, quadratic equations, absolute value equations, and systems of equations. This course extends the number system to include complex numbers. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Geometry Grades 10-11 5 Credits TRIGONOMETRY WITH ALGEBRAIC APPLICATIONS – Trigonometry will focus on right triangle trigonometric ratios, angles, graphing trigonometric functions, the law of sines, the law of cosines, inverse functions and relations (both trigonometric and not), exponential and logarithmic functions, and domain and range. This course is designed to build on algebra topics and continue to strengthen students’ mathematics skills before entering a college-level mathematics course. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra 2 Grades 10-12 5 Credits PRECALCULUS HONORS - This course provides opportunities to collect and interpret data, construct mathematical models, and explore contemporary applications. These models will include: absolute value, piecewise, greatest integer, polynomial, trigonometric, logarithmic, exponential, logistic, inverse trigonometric, power, rational and radical. Trig and inverse trig functions and relations will be used in various applications including harmonic analysis. Study of the radian measure of an angle and its’ use in finding linear and angular velocity. Conic sections in both rectangular and parametric form will be explored. Matrices and vectors will be used to solve real world problems including navigation problems. Complex numbers in polar as well as rectangular form will be expressed. Exposure to calculus topics such as limits, discontinuities, simple derivatives, and equations of tangent lines will also be addressed. Prerequisite: B or better in Algebra 2 Honors or an A in Algebra 2 Grades 11-12 35 5 Credits PRE-CALCULUS – This course is a precursor to a first year college Calculus course for students who expect to pursue scientific or math curriculums in college. This course will provide a thorough study of functions, including polynomial, rational, algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Students will expand their skills of graphing functions, as well as develop the skill of analysis of functions. Prerequisite: C or better in Algebra 2 Grades 11-12 5 Credits AP CALCULUS - This course will develop an understanding of limits through computer and calculatorbased activities. This study of limits including one-sided limits will lead to an understanding of continuity and types of discontinuities. Exploration of the instantaneous rate of change graphically, numerically with limits, and algebraically with various techniques of differentiation, including implicit derivatives. They will estimate the definite integral as well as calculating both definite and indefinite integrals algebraically using various techniques. Students will solve differential equations algebraically and graphically. Application of these concepts in curve sketching, related rates, growth and decay, displacement, velocity and acceleration, finding volumes of solids, and calculating the average value of a function. Prerequisite: B or better in Pre-Calculus Honors or an A in Pre-Calculus Grades 11-12 5 Credits CALCULUS HONORS – This course will explore the concepts of limits and continuity. The basic concept of the derivative with applications to velocity, related rates, max/min problems, and curve sketching will be studied. The concept of definite and indefinite integrals will be studied with applications including finding area under a curve. Prerequisite: C or better in Pre-Calculus Honors or a B in Pre-Calculus Grades 11-12 5 Credits AP STATISTICS – This course will introduce major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing and drawing conclusions from data. Students will be exposed to four broad conceptual themes: Exploring Data: describing patterns and departures from patterns; Sampling and Experimentation: planning and conducting a study; Anticipating Patterns: exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation and Statistical Inference: estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses. Basic and discrete probabilities will be explored. Students will encounter continuous random variables dealing with normal probability distributions and confidence intervals. Students will work with hypothesis testing with both one and two samples. Students may also work with correlation and regression as well as the f-distribution. Prerequisite: C or better in Algebra 2 Grades 10-12 5 Credits COMPUTER SCIENCE - This course introduces computer programming using the C++ language. The course will provide a brief history of the field as well as emphasize structured programming techniques and problem solving. Topics include algorithm development, functions, loops (for, while, do-while), if-else statements, switch statements, arrays and other introductory C++ concepts. The majority of the course will focus on writing programs for various real world problems. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra 1 Grades 10-12 5 Credits 36 AP COMPUTER SCIENCE – This course will focus on object-oriented programming methodology with a concentration on problem solving and algorithm development. This course mirrors a first semester college course in computer science. Topics include programming basics, object-oriented design, inheritance, interfaces, arrays and lists, recursion, and sorting and searching. Students will write their own programs on the aforementioned topics and the course will finish with the study of a large-scale fully-functioning program. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra 2 and/or Computer Science Grades 11-12 5 Credits MATH SAT PREP - In this course, students develop and refine their proficiency in the concepts and skills required for the mathematics section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Students engage in an intensive review of algebraic and geometric math. Study skills and effective strategies for test taking will be stressed. Students enrolling in this course must also take Verbal SAT Skills and Strategies which is a separate English department course. Grade 11-12 2.5credits HSPA MATH 10 - HSPA MATH 11 - This course is designed to improve each student’s mathematical and problem-solving skills in each of the clusters on the High School Proficiency Assessment, so that they may be successful in passing the NJ HSPA. Topics include number and numerical operations, geometry and measurement, patterns and algebra, data analysis, probability, and mathematical processes. This course is also aimed to improve each student’s written responses when answering open-ended questions, provide test-taking strategies and improve the student’s ability to complete the exam in a timely manner. Grades 10-11 2.5 Credits AHSA MATH - This course will review the four clusters tested on the HSPA Exam: Number Sense, Geometry & Spatial Sense, Data Analysis and Algebra & Patterns. The student will become familiar with the format and the types of questions on the HSPA test with the primary focus on multiple step real-life applications. The course is designed to allow each student to work at his/her own pace, specifically on the topics that the student needs to revisit. Focus is on improving written responses to open-ended questions, providing test-taking strategies and time management skills. Lakeland Regional High School offers an extensive program in the performance and general study of music to achieve the Core Curriculum Content Standards and to accomplish three purposes: to encourage skill and technical virtuosity to provide cultural literacy to enable all students to fully develop as well-rounded individuals Five credits in fine and performing arts are required for graduation, and all music courses satisfy this requirement. 37 EXPLORING MUSIC - This non-performance course is open to all students and will cover aspects of music theory, music history, and music in the theatre and cinema. Students will gain knowledge in reading rhythms, construction of scales, and basic elements of music. Students will also learn to identify eras of music and their composers. Grades 9-12 5 credits MUSIC THEORY HONORS – This course teaches the fundamentals of music including rhythm, harmony and melody applications. This course is designed to help students to understand how music is created, written and performed. Intense analysis of the structural elements of rhythm, harmony, melody and form, along with ear training exercises will comprise much of the content. Prerequisite: Ability to read music. At least one year experience in a performing ensemble. Grades 10-12 5 credits MUSIC THEORY AP – The Music Theory course is designed to develop the student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music as outlined in the AP Music Theory Course Description and Requirements. Through reading, notating, composing, singing, and listening to music, students will develop musical skills that will lead to a thorough understanding of music composition and music theory. The main emphasis of study is placed on standard Western tonal repertoire, but music of other stylistic periods will be studied as well. Prerequisite: Music Theory Honors Grades 11 – 12 5 credits CONCERT CHORUS - The Concert Chorus, a vocal training ensemble allows for proficiency in the study and performance of standard choral literature from folk and popular songs to major choral works and Broadway show tunes. Concert Chorus is open to all students without audition. The course covers basic theory, harmony, sight-singing, vocal techniques, ear-training, and tone production. The Concert Chorus performs on three occasions during the school year: the Holiday Festival of Music (December); Winter Festival of Music (February); and the Annual Spring Chorus Concert (May). Performances are viewed as unique, culminating experiences, and are used as an assessment. Worksheets, tests, and vocal tapes are used to assess and evaluate student progress. Opportunities to participate in Region and All-State Choruses are available for accomplished students. Auditions for the Lakeland Chorale and Chamber Singers is contingent upon current enrollment in the Concert Chorus class or two years prior enrollment. Grades 9-12 5 credits BAND - The Lancer Band is open to all students possessing skills on woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments. Students in Band study and perform music emphasizing the development of technical ability, characteristic tonality, and knowledge of phrasing. Band members may audition for Area, Region, and AllState ensembles. This course meets during the school day. Students must participate in all scheduled concerts, festivals, competitions, ceremonies, parades and field performances as members of the Lakeland Marching and Concert Band. These required activities are an integral part of the total Band experience. Attendance is also required at Tuesday evening rehearsals and additional rehearsals as the Band Director deems necessary. Students may also participate in smaller ensembles offered each year. Upon graduation, students are prepared for membership in college level ensembles and community bands. Grades 9-12 5 credits 38 PIANO LAB - This course is open to all students and requires no previous piano experience or musical background. Each student will be given an individualized program that will expand his/her musical development to a basic skill level determined after an initial interview. Music from all periods, including today’s popular songs and rock, will be studied, and each student will learn to play a repertoire of music commensurate with his/her ability. Students will gain basic knowledge of music theory in key signatures, rhythm and chord progressions. Grades 9-12 5 credits MUSIC TECHNOLOGY – This course is designed to acquaint students with various forms, styles, and techniques of the electronic music and recording industry. The course serves as an introductory hands-on lab experience, in which students learn through the use of Macintosh computers how to compose, sequence, and notate music. Students are instructed in the first half of the year on piano keyboard and given an introduction to MIDI, analog recording and editing, and electronic music vocabulary and history. Students are introduced, in the second half of the year, to advanced music sequencing and notation as well as introduction to psycho-acoustics, recording theory and practice, digital editing, Overture (notation software) and Studio Vision (digital sequencing). Final projects are produced on CD-ROM. Grades 10–12 5 credits HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATRE – This course examines the history of this important genre, from its antecedents through its Golden Age to present-day controversies, focusing, for the purpose of this class, on musical theatre in America. We will examine its elements and structure, as well as its creators, from librettists, composers and lyricists, to designers, directors, and choreographers, to performers. Grades 10-12 5 credits 39 PHYSICAL EDUCATION, HEALTH AND SAFETY EDUCATION The physical education program, incorporating the Core Curriculum Standards, has as its major purpose the development of physical abilities, stamina, coordination, strength and grace. ADAPTIVE HEALTH - Designed for students who demonstrate reading difficulties, this course will introduce the students to select topics in health, first aid, driver education, and family living. Class enrollment will be limited to 15 per class. Enrichment opportunities will be provided to enhance student knowledge of practical life experiences. (Students will be assigned to independent projects in other Health areas during the time of exclusion). 40 SCIENCE Acknowledging that scientific knowledge continues to accumulate at an accelerating rate, and that not all of science knowledge can be included in our programs of study, the New Jersey Department of Education in its mandated Core Curriculum Content Standards for Science and our science faculty have identified what all students should learn and be able to do as they grow toward scientific literacy during their years at our high school. All students will gain understanding about life, earth, and physical sciences as they develop critical thinking skills. While students learn science content, habits of mind such as curiosity, skepticism, open-mindedness, and honesty when collecting and interpreting findings will be promoted. All students receive preparation for success on the Science portion of the High School Proficiency Assessment. Fifteen credits of science are required for graduation, which must include at least five credits in Biology, an additional lab based science course including chemistry, environmental science or physics, and a third laboratory based science course. 41 CORE REQUIREMENTS: IMPORTANT NOTE: Biology is offered on three levels of academic rigor. Students are enrolled in the course which best meets their needs and abilities as determined by demonstrated skills and abilities, teacher recommendations, and standardized test scores, with supervisor approval. FOUNDATIONS LEVEL – This modified level program is for those students who have not yet demonstrated grade level science skills and abilities. Emphasis is placed on the reinforcement of science skills most frequently measured on standardized tests. APPLIED LEVEL – This standard level course is designed to meet the needs of the average college-bound student. Areas emphasized are note-taking and study skills, the writing of lab reports, graph interpretation, data-collecting, determining relationships between events and drawing conclusions. The Applied level takes a structured approach with reinforcement activities. Student evaluation will be determined by tests, quizzes, lab reports, homework and periodic evaluations of notebook content. ACADEMIC LEVEL – This standard level course is designed to meet the needs of the above average college-bound student. The student choosing this level should have excellent notetaking and study skills and be fairly proficient in graph interpretation, data-collecting and determining relationships between events. Drawing conclusions and lab report writing will be emphasized. Student evaluation will be similar to the Applied level, but tests and lab reports will be emphasized. HONORS LEVEL – This Premium level course is limited to our most capable and conscientious students. These students have the highest level of mathematics, reading and writing skills and are intellectually curious. In addition, they understand abstractions, perform to their potential and fulfill all obligations. Grade 11-12 5 credits ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY FOR HEALTH (LAB) – Anatomy and physiology, the study of structural body parts and how they work, stresses the biological relationship between structure and function. Community experts are key interactors with the course and graphic content may be covered. Students receive a strong background in cell and molecular biology and relate these principles to heredity and the evolutionary process. A study of organisms reflects the major theme of correlation between structure and function. Clinical applications or biotechniques employed in scientific research are discussed or performed. In addition to labs, protocol used in spectrophotometry, electrophoresis, chromatography, and recombinant DNA, DNA fingerprinting and amplification will also be investigated. Molecular and cell biology, genetics and evolution are the focuses of study. There will be a study of the anatomy of human systems; skeletal, muscular, digestive, excretory, reproductive, respiratory. The detailed dissection of the cat will serve as a human model. In large measure, organic chemistry and biochemistry are surveyed. This premium level course exists to help prepare students to take the Advanced Placement examination in Chemistry. Grades 11 - 12 10 credits ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AP – A cross-disciplinary course designed for the motivated student who desires an advanced course in the area of science. This college-curriculum based course focuses on major environmental issues such as overpopulation, habitat destruction, pollution, and reduced biodiversity as well as the science behind these issues. Emphasis is placed on data collection, analysis, and comparisons from field sampling. An overnight trip with some expenses may be required. This premium level course exists to help prepare the students to take the Advanced Placement examination in Environmental Science. Grades 11 - 12 5 credits SOCIAL STUDIES The Social Studies Department seeks to prepare students for their role as active citizens in a democratic society. Through the study of civics, history, geography and economics, students acquire the knowledge and intellectual skills needed to understand our complex world and to make informed, intelligent decisions. In their study of United States History and World History, students examine all aspects of the human experience: social, political, technological, economic and intellectual. They gain an understanding of how the past has shaped the culture, institutions, and conditions of present day America and the world. In preparation for their role as citizens, students examine the fundamental documents and principles of American democracy, the role of government, and the relationship between the United States and other nations. The Social Studies program stresses development of skills in reading, writing, speaking and thinking. Research skills, including the use of technology in the research process, are also addressed. Critical thinking skills developed in social studies courses include the ability to evaluate evidence, analyze and interpret data, construct logical arguments, make comparisons, and understand causal relationships. All students are required to successfully complete three courses: World History, U.S. History 1 and U.S. History 2. In addition, students are encouraged to enroll in a variety of electives which include Introduction to Psychology, Civil and Criminal Law, Current Issues In American Society, Finance and Economics, Modern European History (A.P.), Politics and Government and U.S. Government and Politics (A.P.) IMPORTANT NOTE: The three (3) required Social Studies courses, World History, U.S. History 1 and U.S. History 2, are offered on several different levels of academic rigor. World History is offered on the Applied, Academic, and Honors levels. U.S. History 1 is offered on three (3) levels: Applied, Academic and Honors. U.S. History 2 is offered on three (3) levels: Applied, Academic and Advanced Placement. These levels are described below. Students are enrolled in the course which best meets their needs and abilities as determined by demonstrated skills and abilities, teacher recommendations, and standardized test scores, with supervisor approval. 45 APPLIED LEVEL - These Standard college preparatory level courses are designed to meet the needs of average students who are preparing for college. These courses integrate the study of history with instruction in language arts, researching, and critical thinking skills. Knowledge of history is acquired through classroom activities that are designed to increase proficiencies in reading comprehension, listening, note- taking, and other study skills. Students’ writing and thinking skills are developed as they are required to make judgments based upon evidence, analyze pros and cons, make comparisons, identify causes and effects, and present well-reasoned arguments and opinions. ACADEMIC LEVEL – These Standard college preparatory level courses are designed to provide a more rigorous workload for college-bound students. This level is appropriate for students who have a greater mastery of reading, writing and critical thinking skills and have a higher degree of motivation in the subject of Social Studies. Academic level courses include more demanding reading and writing assignments, examine topics in greater depth and require a more intensive level of critical thinking than Applied level courses. HONORS LEVEL - These Premium level courses are limited to highly capable and conscientious students who have demonstrated a high degree of motivation in Social Studies. Honors level history courses are designed for students who are not only intellectually curious, but also possess the highest levels of reading and writing skills and demonstrate understanding of abstractions. Such students also take responsibility for their own learning by fulfilling their obligations and performing to their potential. Summer reading is a requirement of U.S. History 1 Honors and will be counted as a major graded assignment. Prerequisite: “A” in Academic Level Social Studies and English courses, “B” or better in Premium Level Social Studies and English courses, or demonstrated mastery of appropriate social studies skills. ADVANCED PLACEMENT - AP history courses are Premium level courses that are designed to represent the equivalent of a first year college course. These courses follow a national curriculum designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement Examination. The college level course work is academically rigorous and students should possess exceptional reading, writing and critical thinking skills. In AP courses students are required to engage in independent reading including the extensive study of primary sources. Students are taught how to demonstrate an accurate conceptual understanding of history by formulating hypotheses and proving them with solid factual evidence in integrated, coherent, stylized essays in preparation for Advanced Placement Examinations. Summer reading is a requirement of U.S. History 2 AP and will be counted as a major graded assignment. Prerequisite: “A” in Academic Level Social Studies and English courses, “B” or better in Premium Level Social Studies and English courses, or demonstrated mastery of appropriate social studies skills. Successful completion of U.S. History 1 Honors is a prerequisite for enrollment in U.S. History 2 AP. REQUIRED COURSES WORLD HISTORY (APPLIED, ACADEMIC, HONORS) - In this course, students trace the development of human history from 1450 to the present. An understanding of the past is developed through the application of such historical themes as continuity and change, geography and history, political and social systems, religions and value systems, economics and technology, global interaction, the impact of the individual and the role of artistic expression. 5 credits U.S. HISTORY 1 (APPLIED, ACADEMIC, HONORS) - In this survey course, students follow the development of the United States from the Revolutionary period to the end of the nineteenth century. Topics of study include the American Revolution, the Constitution, national growth, the Civil War and its aftermath, and the rise of industrial and urban America. The completion of a written research paper and/or project is the culmination of a unit emphasizing research, writing, and information literacy. 5 credits 46 U.S. HISTORY 2 (APPLIED, ACADEMIC, ADVANCED PLACEMENT) In this survey course, students continue to examine our national experiences and cultural developments as they occurred during the twentieth century. Topics of study include the development of America as a world power, the Progressive Era, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, the struggle for civil rights, and continuity and change in America today. 5 credits SOCIAL STUDIES ELECTIVES CIVIL AND CRIMINAL LAW – In this survey course students will analyze the fundamental concepts and workings of our legal system, as well as develop an understanding of their rights, responsibilities and functions in a variety of situations. Among the topics studied are: the court system, the nature of criminal and civil actions, criminal law and procedure, juvenile justice, and the law of negligence and strict liability. Topics in family law, including marriage, divorce, rights and responsibilities of parents and children, and the laws of inheritance are also addressed. The course also examines the individual rights and freedoms of Americans under our Constitution. Grades 11-12 5 credits FINANCE AND ECONOMICS For course description, see Business Education, page 27. Grades 10-12 5 credits INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY – In this survey course, students examine fundamental concepts in the discipline of psychology as it relates to the individual. Among the topics studied are: the biology of human behavior, developmental theory, learning and cognitive processes, psychological research methods, classic personality theory and abnormal psychology. Grades 11-12 5 credits CURRENT ISSUES IN AMERICAN SOCIETY – In this course, students will study a range of issues confronting American society today. Using social science methods, students will examine such issues as: the family, health care, race and ethnicity, gender issues, socio-economic status and youth culture. Student understanding will be enhanced through projects, investigations, and the extensive use of technology. Grades 10-12 5 credits POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT – This course stresses the essential ideas and practices of the American political system. Students will study the American political system, focusing on such factors as voter behavior, political parties, mass media, public opinion, political campaigns and interest groups. In addition, students will examine the fundamental principles and institutions of American government as well as study current public policy issues. Student understanding will be enhanced through projects, field trips, investigations, and other authentic experiences. Grades 10-12 5 credits 47 MODERN EUROPEAN HISTORY (ADVANCED PLACEMENT) – This Premium level course is designed to represent the equivalent of a first year college history course. In this course students are prepared to successfully perform on the Modern European History Advanced Placement Examination. Enrollment is limited to our most capable and conscientious students. Students use college-level textbooks, primary source documents, films and art reproductions to closely examine the political, diplomatic, intellectual, cultural, social and economic history of Europe from the Renaissance to the present. Prerequisite: "A" in Social Studies and English courses or demonstrated mastery of appropriate social studies skills. Grades 11-12 5 credits U.S. GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS (ADVANCED PLACEMENT) – This Premium level course is designed to represent the equivalent of an introductory college course on American government and politics. In this course students are prepared to successfully perform on the U.S. Government and Politics Advanced Placement Examination. Enrollment is limited to our most capable and conscientious students. (See above description of AP level) Students develop a critical perspective on American government and politics while gaining familiarity with the institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that make up the American political reality. Grades 11-12 5 credits TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION The Technology Education program has as its primary purpose the preparation of students to live and work in a technological society. The courses within the program are designed to educate all students, boys and girls, with regard to career opportunities, living and working with current and future technologies, and the changing workplace as we live in the 21st Century. To compete in a global, information-based economy, the students we prepare must be able to solve real problems, reason effectively, and make logical connections. The world of work they enter will feature products and factories that are designed by mathematical models and computer simulations, computers that control production processes and plants, and robots. We need to develop people with the skills to develop and manage these new technologies. The Core Curriculum Content Standards mandate that students will be able to develop original thoughts and ideas, think creatively, develop habits of inquiry, and take intellectual and performance risks. Students are expected to recognize problems, devise ways to solve these problems, analyze the potential advantages and disadvantages of each alternative, and evaluate the effectiveness of the method ultimately selected. This is the basis of technology education. The various program areas provide practical experiences and a broad range of studies in the areas of communications, transportation and energy, manufacturing and construction. Each course will afford the student valuable experiences and insight into the technologies that will affect their adult lives. Students will have an opportunity to explore a variety of areas within the fields listed above. They will have an opportunity to work with the following high-tech equipment: computer assisted drafting and design systems, computerized numerical control machines, robots, laser and fiber optics, digital electronics, computer technology, satellite communications, alternative energy, mass production and desktop publishing. Grades 9-12 - Required course 2 1/2 credits INTRODUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY - Introduction to Technology will emphasize the design and problem solving process, the evolution of technology, and a systems approach to understanding technology. The areas of communications, manufacturing, and technical drawing will be explored through the application of problem solving activities (Technology Learning Activities) which will engage students in first-hand experiences with technology. Students will learn the impacts of technology on the individual and society. Grades 9–12 5 credits PRE-ENGINEERING & ROBOTICS - This course offers the student an opportunity to design and manufacture useful devices or materials whose purpose is to increase effectiveness. Using a robotics based curriculum, students will use scientific knowledge, mathematics, imagination, persistence, and ingenuity in solving specific practical problems concerning the environment, structures, telecommunications, energy, aerodynamics, and other forms of technology. Individual and group experimentation will result in the design and modification of solutions. Prerequisite: Introduction to Technology Grades 10-12 5 credits ROBOTICS 2 – This course will be an upper level course built on the platform of the Intro to Technology and Pre-Engineering & Robotics curriculum. Students will utilize Vex Robotics kits to design, build and create robots in efforts to explore various different elements and themes of engineering. Some themes may include but are not limited to: Electronics and electronic control systems / statics, kinematics and forces / machine design (fasteners, gears, pulleys, belt drives) / safety and construction techniques / and computer programming. Prerequisite: Pre-Engineering & Robotics Grades 10-12 5 credits WOODWORKING TECHNOLOGY - A course for the student interested in learning how various wood products are produced. Students will study about various systems, materials, tools and equipment used in the manufacture of wood products. Instruction will also include information on new technologies being used in their design, construction and assembly. Each student will have numerous opportunities to produce various wood products using simulated production and manufacturing techniques. Grades 10-12 5 credits FURNITURE AND CABINET CONSTRUCTION - An advanced course in woodworking designed for those students interested in learning how to work with woodworking materials, tools, machines and processes used in the building of cabinets and the production of furniture. Areas of instruction will include an overview of the cabinetmaking and millwork industries, the study of furniture designs and styles, materials selection, systems of construction and finishing. Students will be required to complete a design activity involving the construction of a furniture or cabinet piece. Prerequisite: Woodworking Technology Grades 11-12 5 credits 49 AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS 1 - This course will introduce the student to the world of transportation. The history of the automobile, automotive design and the functions of various automotive systems are emphasized in this course. Included is instruction dealing with small engine systems, air and land transportation systems. Students will have an opportunity to utilize a variety of tools and diagnostic equipment to service and repair automobiles as well as to solve a variety of problems related to the other areas of transportation. Grades 11-12 5 credits AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS 2 – This course is for students who wish to broaden their knowledge of information and skills acquired in Automotive Technology and Transportation Systems 1. Automotive areas to be covered will include: electronic tune-up and repairs, automobile electronics, emission controls, basic auto body repairs and transmission and drive train assemblies. Students will also have an opportunity to work on special design and problem-solving activities involving new technologies related to various forms of transportation systems. Prerequisites: Automotive Technology and Transportation Systems 1 Grade 11-12 5 credits INTRODUCTION TO DRAFTING AND DESIGN – This is an introduction to drafting and design. If you are interested in design, engineering, science, illustration or any field that requires you to be able to plan and communicate your ideas graphically, then this is the course for you. We'll teach you not only to draw the plans for items to be manufactured or constructed, but how to read machine drawings and blueprints and use computer assisted drafting systems. Problem-solving activities involving the application of conventional sketching, mechanical, and CADD drawing will also be included. Grades 10-12 5 credits DRAFTING AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - This course offers the student an opportunity to explore various computer assisted drawing programs and techniques used for design. Computer generated drawings will be created in the areas of design, interior design, architecture, 3 dimensional modeling, structural animation, and engineering. Problem solving activities involving design through the use of computer assisted drafting will be stressed. Recommendation: Introduction to Drafting and Design Grades 10-12 5 credits PHOTOGRAPHY 1 - Learn to see with a camera as a means for mastering the elements of photographic design. A brief history of photography and explanation of the inner workings of a camera will be covered. The technical aspects of black and white photography such as film developing and print processing are a major portion of the class. Genres may include still life, portrait, action photos, nature and more. Line, texture, shape, motion and perspective are emphasized. Students will learn the guidelines for composing and evaluating photography as an artistic form of expression. Students will learn to be global creative thinkers while evaluating possible photography career paths through assignment. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art 1 Grades 11-12 5 credits ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN - Future architects, technicians, engineers and homeowners will benefit from this course. Students study the history of architecture and its relationships to materials and construction techniques. Students will have an opportunity to design rooms, homes, gardens and then create a model of their work. Students learn about: zoning, planning, construction principles, ecology, energy and careers in the architectural field. This course will be helpful to the future architect, interior designer, or home builder. Grades 10-12 5 credits 50 VIDEO PRODUCTION/MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS 1 - This course deals with the fundamentals of video and media communications. This course will cover such areas as television writing, scripting, storyboarding, basic performing techniques, set design, and video production through equipment use, and post production digital editing. Students will utilize the TV studio as well as a computer lab for the creation of stories, scripts, storyboards, and graphics. In addition, students will have an opportunity to produce programming which may be included in a school news show. This course may be team taught by the English and Technology Education departments. Grades 9-12 5 credits VIDEO PRODUCTION / MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS 2 - This advanced course deals with all phases of video production and media communications. It will cover such areas as television script writing, production techniques, set design, lighting, videotaping, sound equipment, camcorder use, and post production digital editing. Students will be responsible for developing, planning, writing and performing in school news programs, sports programming and various other school related programs. Individual creative assignments will include the creation of a 5 minute short feature, and a music video. Students must videotape and air one out of class taping event each marking period. All work produced in this course will be suitable for airing on the public access channel. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Video 1 Grades 10-12 5 credits VIDEO PRODUCTION / MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS 3 – This advanced course is designed for students with career aspirations in the field of communications. This in depth course will deal with exploring communications through television and the media with student productions centered around school news topics and areas related to Ringwood, Wanaque and Lakeland school districts. Students will also be required to produce a documentary with a local area connection. Advanced study in post production digital editing will cover the Program Final Cut Pro. Students must videotape and air one out of class taping event each marking period. All work produced in this course will be suitable for airing on the public access channel. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Video 2 Grades 10-12 5 credits VIDEO PRODUCTION / MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS 4 - This advanced course is designed for students with career aspirations in any of the fields connected to the broad area of communications. This in-depth course will stress exploration of advanced techniques in video productions including special effects (using Motion software) and Chroma-key (blue / green screen). Advanced work in audio productions will be examined through the use of the software program Soundtrack Pro. Digital editing will include student work using Final Cut Pro software. Journalistic writing styles for scripting will also be emphasized. Student productions will center on school topics, and information related to the Ringwood, Wanaque, and Lakeland districts. All work produced in this course will be suitable for airing on public access TV, as well as our in-house TV channel. Pre-requisite: Video 3 with a grade of “C” or better Grades 11 – 12 5 credits STUDYING FILM – This course will explore the progression of films from the early days of silent films through the glory days of major Hollywood productions and into the current era of independent filmmaking. Each film unit will conclude with students writing an in depth essay report on one of four topics: Film Technique, Conflict, Character Growth or Film Genre. College credit may be earned. See Project Acceleration on page 12. Grades 11–12 5 credits 51 ADVANCED FILM STUDIES – This course will utilize the students’ understanding of various film genres explored in the Studying Film class and will expand upon their knowledge of film making techniques as they analyze additional genres including foreign film, satirical comedy, independent films, etc. Students will study the methodology of film production though the practical applications of brainstorming script ideas, creating proposals, scripting, shot planning and storyboarding, shooting and digitally editing a short film. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Studying Film Grades 11-12 5 credits WORLD LANGUAGES To support the growth of New Jersey’s economy as we move through the twenty-first century, our state needs educated citizens whose multilingual abilities and multicultural sensitivities prepare them to work in a pluralistic society and a global economy. In order to meet this challenge and to broaden the personal and professional opportunities of Lakeland students, the World Languages Department seeks to prepare our students to communicate in other languages and to develop the understanding needed to operate in differing cultural contexts. World languages are an essential part of the education of all students. The primary goal of a world language program is effective communication. Culture is also an integral part of world language learning. The World Languages Department of Lakeland Regional High School offers students the opportunity to study the classical language of Latin and the romance languages of French and Spanish. In order to graduate, all students in the class of 2008 and thereafter are required to complete 5 credits of a World Language. Any level of Spanish, French or Latin (Modified, Standard, Honors) will satisfy this requirement; however, the elective in Classical Mythology will not satisfy this graduation requirement. World language courses, with the exception of Classical Mythology, must be taken in sequence. FRENCH 1 - Students selecting the first year course in French are introduced to the fundamentals of the French language and the culture of France. Students have the opportunity to develop basic fluency in the language through daily conversation and maximum usage of French in the classroom. 5 credits FRENCH 2 - Students will expand their knowledge of French grammar and vocabulary. In addition, students will improve communication skills and increase their knowledge and understanding of the people and customs of France and French speaking countries around the world. Prerequisite: Passing grade in French 1 5 credits FRENCH 3 - Intermediate students will broaden their conversational and reading skills through the medium of short stories, play excerpts and newspaper articles. Discussions are conducted in French and grammar is reviewed and refined in order to enhance and expand composition skills. The culture and geography of French-speaking countries are studied as is the importance of the French language in today's job market. Prerequisite: "C" or better in French 2 5 credits FRENCH 4 (H) - Readings in French history, literature and the arts will increase vocabulary and expand and refine grammar skills. These advanced reading materials provide the students with many opportunities for self-expression and improvement of communication skills. Prerequisite: "C" or better in French 3 5 credits 52 LATIN 1 - This course is designed as an introduction to the basics of the Latin language and the heritage of the Western World from classical literature, art, mythology, architecture, law, and government. Students will learn to read, write, and translate simple Latin sentences and passages, as well as to use oral Latin to communicate basic commands, questions, and answers in the classroom. Vocabulary development is an important element of the course in preparation for the SAT as well as future college and career success. 5 credits LATIN 2 - This course is a continuation of Latin 1, emphasizing mastery of more complex grammatical structures and sophisticated vocabulary. Students will read and comprehend longer passages, gaining insight into Roman mythology, daily life, government, and history. Emphasis will be placed on the story of the Aeneid, Virgil, and the Golden Age of Latin literature, as well as a detailed study of Pompeii, including Pliny's eyewitness account of its destruction. Vocabulary building via a study of basic etymological principles will intensify. Prerequisite: Passing grade in Latin 1 5 credits LATIN 3 - Third year Latin students will continue to develop their grammar and vocabulary skills and to increase their knowledge and appreciation of our classical heritage. Students will study increasingly complex prose passages by Latin authors such as Pliny, Caesar and Cicero, and selected excerpts from poetry by Cattullus, Ovid, and Virgil. Prerequisite: "C" or better in Latin 2 5 credits LATIN 4 (H) - This final course in the study of a classical language will emphasize increased understanding of advanced grammatical concepts explored in Latin III, more extensive vocabulary acquisition, continued study of Greco-Roman culture, history and mythology, and the comprehension and accurate translation of authors such as Livy, Cicero, Ovid, Horace, and Virgil. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Latin 3 5 credits SPANISH 1 FOUNDATIONS – This Modified level program is for those students who have not yet developed the skills and abilities necessary to perform successfully in a Standard level World Language class. Students will focus on vocabulary development, spoken language practice, listening comprehension, and cultural studies. Although it does not qualify as a college preparatory course, this course will satisfy the graduation requirement of one year of world language. Students who wish to continue the study of Spanish after this modified course must enroll in Spanish 1 Standard level. 5 credits SPANISH 1 - Fundamental skills are developed through emphasis on correct pronunciation and introduction of basic vocabulary. Subject matter is presented in assimilable units affording the student the ability to understand, read, write and speak in Spanish. Skills are practiced through individual and group participation and use of audio-visual materials and interactive software applications. 5 credits SPANISH 2 - The second year builds on the four basic language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will continue to expand their competency in grammar and will further develop their vocabulary. Readings, audio tapes and video tapes provide opportunities to learn about the life and customs of the Spanish-speaking people. Prerequisite: Passing grade in Spanish 1 Standard 53 5 credits SPANISH 3 - This third year course is designed to stress language as a means of communication. The aims are to increase competence in understanding Spanish when spoken, to develop an increasing ability to speak Spanish correctly and with clarity, and to refine grammar skills applicable to reading and writing. Literary excerpts and contemporary short stories increase the ability to read new materials with direct comprehension and appreciation. Prerequisite: "C" or better in Spanish 2 5 credits SPANISH 4 (H) - Selected readings, audio tapes, video tapes and internet projects expand and refine grammar skills and familiarize students with the target language cultures. Discussion of advanced reading materials will provide students with an opportunity for self-expression and improvement of communication skills. Prerequisite: "C" or better in Spanish 3 5 credits SPANISH 5 (H) - The final course in the sequence aims to integrate and extend the linguistic accomplishments of the previous years. At this level required knowledge and skills are consolidated and brought to fruition as the students feel at home in Spanish. Appreciation and enjoyment of literature and civilization are deepened, and the capacity to communicate is extended. Opportunities are provided for individual research, oral reports and advanced conversation. The transition from guided and controlled activities is made to a more independent exercise of linguistic skills. Prerequisite: “C” or better in Spanish 4 5 credits AP SPANISH - This course stresses oral skills, composition, and grammar, emphasizing the use of Spanish for active communication. Students considering this course must have a strong background in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Upon completion of this course, the student may take the Spanish language AP Exam for possible college credit. This exam tests the student's knowledge in all four skill areas. Perquisite: “C” or better in Spanish 4 5 credits CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY – This course is designed for students who wish to increase their knowledge of Classical mythology and its influence on Western culture. Students will explore the origins of the 12 Olympians as well as the lesser-known deities of the Greco-Roman world through the study of myths, tales of metamorphosis, and excerpts from the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid, in order to learn how the Greeks and Romans saw their world. Students will also recognize the tremendous influence that Classical Mythology has had on the Western world via exploration of art, literature, and cultural references. Knowledge of Latin or Greek is not required. This course will not fulfill the 5 credit World Language course distribution requirement. Grades 10-12 5 credits 54 SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS The department believes that all students want to learn and have the desire to achieve academic success. Each student has their own individual style and approach to learning, therefore academic instruction needs to be tailored to the individual student in order to maximize success for all. Many students do not respond to traditional teaching methods and may require a specialized academic program of instruction that identifies their strengths and weakness in order to succeed academically. To achieve this goal, the special education department offers a variety of special education models for students who have been determined to be eligible for special education and related services. Emphasis is placed on educating each student within the general education mainstream to the fullest extent when appropriate. The following is a list of special education services that are currently being offered: In Class Support - A program for classified students provided by a special education teacher or paraprofessional who works collaboratively with the regular education teacher. They work as a team, planning and implementing strategies, techniques, methods and materials to meet the needs of student with education disabilities. The classified students must meet the same educational objectives as the regular education students. Out of Class Replacement - Specifically designed for the exceptional student, with an emphasis on development and remediation of basic skills in a specific subject area. Instruction is individualized and developed according to each individual students needs. Students will also work on mastery of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in all subject areas. Pupils in Need of Nurturing and Creative Learning Experiences - A program developed to address the needs of behaviorally challenged students. The program has a Behavior Improvement Plan incorporated in the structure of the normal classroom routine, twice weekly counseling and a shortened school day (7:301:10). Academic course work places an emphasis on remedial instruction of core academic foundation skills to promote academic achievement. Earned incentives such as participation in the mainstream, free periods or homework passes, and breakfast/lunch certificates are incorporated into the classroom behavior improvement plan. Opportunities for community based instruction and structured learning experiences outside of the classroom are also an option as part of this program. Multiple Disabilities - A program developed to address the needs of students who are in need of assistance with functional academic skill development and daily living skills training. These objectives are met through community based instruction and structured learning experiences outside of the classroom so that transition to post high school employment goals and objectives can be met. Lakeland Educational Autism Resource Network (LEARN) - A program created to accommodate the needs of students who have a diagnosis that falls within the Autistic Spectrum. The program provides functional academic skill development, daily living skills preparation and social skills training through a variety of least restrictive educational options such as self contained and in class support resource programs. In addition to the instruction provided on site at Lakeland Regional High School, learning objectives are also met through community based instruction and structured learning experiences within the local community. The department offers related services such as counseling, speech/language therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy as stipulated in an IEP. Each eligible student is assigned a case manager who will monitor their progress during their high school career. The special education case manager acts as the student’s guidance counselor and takes an active role in the development of a transition plan to facilitate post high school educational/vocational outcomes. 55 ENGLISH 1 LAL (Resource Center) - Specifically designed for the exceptional student, this course emphasizes remediation of basic language arts. Units of study address the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Language Arts including grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading, writing and HSPA preparation. Small group and individualized instruction are provided. 5 credits ALGEBRA 9 (Resource Center) This course is intended for students who need a stronger base in mathematics as they begin high school. The course focuses on traditional Algebra I concepts but at a slower pace. In the preliminary unit, the concentration is on developing stronger mathematical fundamentals before progressing into the traditional algebra course of study. The following algebraic topics will be covered: operations with integers, real numbers and variables; solving equations, inequalities and systems of equations; operations on functions; developing and using formulas; effective problem solving and data analysis; graphing on the number line and the Cartesian plane; recognizing functions as opposed to relations; and the use of exponents and radicals in algebraic equations. 10 credits GEOMETRY (Resource Center) Geometry course is designed to place an emphasis on the discovery and applications of geometric theorems, such as parallel and perpendicular lines, ages and their measures, congruency, perimeter, area, volume, and a review of algebraic concepts. Students will also be reviewing for the HSPA. Students successful in this course will progress to Math 3 Resource Center. 10 credits MATH 3 - 4 (Resource Center) - The courses are designed for students who have not mastered the basic skills in mathematics. They should be taken by those who are not planning to enroll in a four-year college. The courses present topics such as operations with fractions, decimals, percents, solving equations, basic geometry, data analysis, probability, statistics and logical reasoning. The emphasis is on solving word and/or real life mathematical problems. Students will also work on mastery of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Mathematics in preparation for the HSPA. 5 credits 56 SCIENCE 1 - 3 (Resource Center)– Specifically designed for the exceptional student, the course emphasizes remediation of basic science skills in earth science, biology and physical science. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content standards are addressed by covering basic science principles, the scientific process, geology, basic principles of astronomy, earth’s history, the origin and evolution of life, living structure, inheritance, and the relationship to the environment. Many areas presented are supported by laboratory work that is designed to develop observational skills, problem –solving, and lab techniques. Small group and individualized instruction are provided. 5 credits SOCIAL STUDIES (Resource Center)- Designed for the exceptional student who has difficulty with reading comprehension and writing. This course will address New Jersey studies, United States Geography, and select topics in the area of World History and World Cultures. A multi-sensory approach will be utilized to enhance learning in a small group setting. 5 credits U. S. HISTORY 1 & 2 (Resource Center)- U. S. History 1 & 2 are basic courses in government, civics and citizenship. They are designed to make the principles and practices of our democratic system of government come alive to students of varying abilities. The range of concepts and abilities allows multilevel effectiveness for all students. U.S. History 1 follows the development of the United States from the Revolutionary period to the end of the nineteenth century. Topics include the American Revolution, the Constitution, national growth, the Civil War and its aftermath, and the rise of industrial and urban America. U.S. History 2 follows the development of America as a world power, the Progressive Era, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, the struggle for civil rights and progressing to present day. Current events will be used to keep students abreast of present day occurrences. 5 credits S.C.O.P.E. MODIFIED - Designed specifically for the exceptional student who requires a resource center environment. This course will begin the process of helping the student understand his/her perspectives, aptitudes and learning styles. Students will begin their career preparation process by a personal assessment and career awareness. This course will develop the foundation for a career strategy process to include the development of a workplace profile and educational plan incorporating personal and family goals that can lead to a positive school experience and career transition. Some of the topics included in this course are: personal development, planning and goal setting, learning styles, decision making, effective study skills, speech, and the process of selecting and planning for a career. This course may be taught by a Teacher of the Handicapped or by a team of teachers from various disciplines. Grades 9 - 12 2 ½ credits INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER APPLICATIONS MODIFIED – This computer literacy course offers the exceptional student an opportunity to study the various systems and computer equipment used in the work place. Students will be provided with the skills necessary to create reports, charts, and publication materials. They will be introduced to word processing, database and spreadsheet programs, scanners, and laser printers. This resource center replacement class will be taught by a Teacher of the Handicapped and fulfill part of the computer literacy requirement. Grades 9-12 2 1/2 credits STUDY SKILLS - This course is designed to assist students in increasing their skills in the mechanics of study and guides them toward self-direction in their mainstream subject areas. The emphasis is on the development of outlining, note taking and summarizing skills and the development of efficient study patterns. Grade 9 2.5 credits 57 READING - This course is specifically designed to provide individualized reading instruction for special needs students. Individual diagnostic instruments will be utilized to determine specific weaknesses. Emphasis will be on the correction and improvement of reading difficulties. Instructional materials will include computer software programs to increase vocabulary and comprehension and reading selections from the content areas. 5 credits C.O.R.E. (CAREER ORIENTATION RESOURCE EDUCATION) CORE is a school-to-work program designed to help exceptional students achieve workplace readiness and provide actual work experience in the classroom. Through the use of discussion, role playing, field trips, technology and work experiences in the school and community, students will learn the skills needed to become actively employed. 5 credits ART 1 MODIFIED – This beginning course is designed for the exceptional student who needs a replacement resource center environment. This hands-on course introduces the students to a variety of tools, materials and methods used in creative artwork. The elements of design are taught as students explore contemporary and traditional artists and how their work has impacted our lives and culture. The course may be taught by a teacher certified in Art or a teacher of the handicapped. Grades 9 - 12 5 credits BUSINESS MODIFIED – This general course is designed for the exceptional student who requires a replacement resource center environment. This hands-on course introduces the student to various areas of the business curriculum including: keyboarding, personal finance, clerical tasks, communication skills, basic computer applications and career education. This course may be taught by a teacher certified in Business or a teacher of the handicapped. Grades 10-12 5 credits FRENCH 1 MODIFIED – This is the beginning course in French language and culture for the exceptional student who requires a replacement resource center environment. This course is taught by a teacher certified in French and fulfills the local multicultural awareness requirement and the New Jersey Department of Education World Language requirement. Grades 9-12 5 credits SPANISH 1 MODIFIED – This is the beginning course in Spanish language and culture for the exceptional student who requires a replacement resource center environment. This course is taught by a teacher certified in Spanish and fulfills the local multicultural awareness requirement and the New Jersey Department of Education World Language requirement. Grades 9 – 12 5 credits WOODWORKING TECHNOLOGY MODIFIED – A course for the student interested in learning how various wood products are produced. Students will study about various systems, materials, tools and equipment used in the manufacture of wood products with a modified approach. Instruction will also include information on new technologies being used in their design, construction and assembly. Each student will have opportunities to produce wood products using simulated production and manufacturing techniques. Grades 9 – 12 5 credits 58 INTRODUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY - DEVELOPMENTAL - Offered with a modified approach, the concepts and activities of Introduction to Technology will emphasize the design and problem solving process, the evolution of technology, and a systems approach to understanding technology. The areas of communications, manufacturing, and technical drawing will be explored through the application of problem solving activities (Technology Learning Activities) which will engage students in first-hand experiences with technology. Students will learn the impacts of technology on the individual and society. Grades 9-12 5 credits HOME / LIFE SKILLS 1 – 4 MODIFIED - This course will use a modified approach to teach the fundamentals of basic household maintenance/repairs. Some of the skills highlighted will include: painting, hanging pictures, basic assembly of household units such as shelves, plumbing and electrical maintenance and minor repairs. This course will also provide opportunities to use basic hand tools and small power tools which are needed to complete minor household repairs and the opportunity to learn basic computer skills. Students will also be instructed in the safety rules when working around the house with tools, equipment, electricity, water, etc. Grades 9 – 12 5 credits VIDEO PRODUCTION/MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS 1 – MODIFIED – This course will use a modified approach to teach the fundamentals of video and media communications. This course will highlight television writing, basic performing techniques, set design, and video production through equipment use, and post production digital editing. Students will utilize the TV studio equipment, and Macintosh G5 computers with Final Cut Pro and Garage Band software. In addition, students will have an opportunity to participate in the Lakeland Morning Show. Grades 9 – 12 5 credits LANGUAGE ARTS (INDIVIDUALIZED PROGRAM) is a course for classified students who need intensive language development instruction. Many of the students have completed four years of high school English and are attending school extra years as per IEP, although they may have obtained required graduation credits. Other students will benefit from additional instruction in the Language Arts. Most students are receiving the speech and language as a related service. A Teacher of the Handicapped who also holds certification in Speech Correction teaches this class. Grades 9-12 5 credits ESL ESL (ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE) is an individualized class designed to aid students with a foreign language background to adjust in an English speaking society. This is a required course for foreign speaking students who fall below state standards on a foreign language test. This course is for students whose primary language is not English. ELIGIBLE if a student has not reached the age of 19 prior to September 1. 2. ELIGIBLE during the first semester (September 1 to January 31) if a student has passed 25% of the credits required by the State of New Jersey for graduation during the immediate preceding academic year, i.e., 27.5 credits. ELIGIBLE FOR SECOND SEMESTER (February 1 to June 30) a pupil must have passed the equivalent of 12½% of the credits required by the State of New Jersey for graduation at the close of the preceding semester (January 31) i.e., 13.75 credits. Full year courses shall be equated as one-half to determine credits passed during the immediately preceding semester. 3. ELIGIBLE immediately if transferring because of a change of residence to another public secondary school district by parents or as approved by the Executive Committee. 4. ELIGIBLE after thirty (30) days from entrance into present school if they have played in a varsity contest and if transferring from one school to another when parents have not moved from one public school district to another public school district and only after a Transfer Waiver Form has been completed and processed by both schools. 5. ELIGIBLE if no influence has been used to retain or to recruit the student. 6. ELIGIBLE to represent his/her present school, if a student’s parents move to another public school district maintaining a secondary school of equal grade or higher provided he/she remains properly subject to the transfer provisions. 7. NOT ELIGIBLE after the completion of 8 semesters following a student’s entrance into the 9th grade. 8. NOT ELIGIBLE after the class in which a student originally enrolled graduates, regardless of transfer from any school during the 3 or 4-year period. 9. NOT ELIGIBLE for thirty (30) days from entrance into present school if they have played in a varsity contest and if transferring from one school to another when parents have not moved from one public school district to another regardless of the reason. Not eligible until the “Transfer Waiver Form” has been processed. NOTE: Fall Sports: All fall sports begin practice at various dates in August. Dates will be posted on the Lakeland Regional High School website under “Athletics”. The weight room is open to all athletes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the summer. Basketball: Practice not to start until Friday after Thanksgiving. No player may be involved in an interscholastic scrimmage or game until that player has had six (6) days of practice in that sport. The basketball season for each school ends with the last regularly scheduled game or state tournament game for that school. No interscholastic games other than the state tournament may be played after the Saturday preceding the start of the tournament.
