Wine has been produced all around Montpellier since Antiquity and Languedoc Roussillon is home to a wide variety of wine-growing soils. Most of the local production is composed of AOC and Vins de Pays. There are around a dozen outstanding appellations amongst the Coteaux du Languedoc: Faugères, SaintChinian, Pic Saint-Loup, and also the Mireval, Frontignan and Lunel muscats. H I 13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6 J K L M N O Les Opéras de Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole / K9 / L10 As a centre for French culture, Montpellier, boasts two opera houses: the Comédie Opera (1888) and Berlioz Opera (1990). DISCOVER HISTORIC CENTRE Place de la Comédie / L9 The true centre of Montpellier! This oval-shaped plaza, dominated by the Comédie Opera House, is one of the largest pedestrian areas in Europe and was designed in the 18th century. © OT Montpellier - Celine Escolano Les 3 Grâces / L9 Created in 1773 by Etienne d’Antoine, the Three Graces statue-fountain (Aglae, Euphrosine and Thalie) in the middle of the Place de la Comédie is one of the symbols of Montpellier. The original statue is in the hall of the Comédie Opera House. Ancien amphithéâtre Saint-Côme / K9 The Hôtel Saint-Côme mansion was built in 1757 by architect Jean-Antoine Giral, with funds bequeathed by François Gigot de Lapeyronie, to be used as an amphitheatre for a surgery school up until the Revolution. It now houses the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Tour de la Babote / K9 One of the two remaining towers of the 14th century ramparts, the Tour de la Babote was renovated in the 18th century to house the astronomy observatory of the Academy of Science. Église et quartier Saint-Roch / K9 Saint-Roch is the patron Saint of Montpellier, where he was born. It welcomed pilgrims along the Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela. The 19th century Church houses his remains. Quartier Sainte-Anne / K9 Here you will find the Carré SteAnne – a deconsecrated church used for exhibitions, as well as the Music Conservatory and fine instrument workshops making violins, violas and cellos. Notice the signs as you enter the plaza. Some of these workshops may be discovered on guided city tours. Mikvé / K10 A Jewish ritual bath from the 12th century, the mediaeval Mikveh shows the importance of Montpellier’s Jewish community. Accessible only via guided tours run by the Tourist Office.
