NATURE IN THE CITY CENTRE
VINEYARDS
You will love…the variety. Wine has been produced
all around Montpellier since Antiquity and
Languedoc Roussillon is home to a wide variety of
wine-growing soils. Most of the local production is
composed of AOC and Vins de Pays. There are
around a dozen outstanding appellations amongst
the Coteaux du Languedoc: Faugères, SaintChinian, Pic Saint-Loup, and also the Mireval,
Frontignan and Lunel muscats. Don’t miss the
Grés de Montpellier, grown in Montpellier itself. All
part of the local heritage that you will enjoy tasting in
the city’s best restaurants and bars, in the wine
shops or directly at the wineries, as well as in the
popular wine bars of Montpellier.
Your guide? Montpellier
Méditerranée Métropole publishes
a Guide des Vins, a wine guide (in
French), to help you explore this

to erect this triumphal arch, a
copy of the gates of Paris, in
honour of Louis XIV, built where
one of the gates of the ancient
rampart used to be.
Good Tip! Follow a guided
tour and get on the top of the
triumphal arch.

La Faculté de Médecine / K10
Montpellier was only two
centuries old in 1181, when
its Lord Guilhem VIII signed a
surprising and far-reaching
edict. He declared that
anyone, regardless of religion
or background, could teach
medicine in Montpellier…
Thus was born, at the end of the
12th century, what is today one
of the oldest active medical
schools in the western world
Conservatoire d’anatomie / K10
Originally created for teaching
anatomy, the Conservatoire
was an unprecedented and
incomparable tool for many
generations of students before
present-day techniques for
exploring the human body
existed. Over 5,600 priceless
pieces are housed in a building
constructed in 1851.
Good Tip! Enter the
Faculty of Medicine and the
Conservatory of Anatomy during
a guided tour run by the Tourist
Office.

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre / K10
Pope Urban V, a former student
of Montpellier, had a monastery

PORT MARIANNE
& ODYSSEUM
9
New districts have emerged
in recent years, slowly moving the heart of the
city towards the southeast, in the
direction of the sea. Areas such as Antigone
by Ricardo Bofill, Les Rives du Lez, and
Port Marianne with its figurehead,
the City Hall designed by Jean Nouvel and
François Fontès. What is the common thread
that unites these new neighbourhoods?
Contemporary architecture by the greatest
architects of our time, in a verdant jewellery
box, perfect for strolling and relaxation.
And for shopping, there’s Odysseum!

Port Marianne
and the Town Hall / N8 / O8
The original idea for the Port
Marianne district in Montpellier
emerged more than 30 years
ago, and took shape in the 1990s
alongside the Consuls de Mer
area. Every year, new pieces are
added to this giant jigsaw puzzle.
Richter, Jacques Coeur, Parc
Marianne… every neighbourhood
contributes to the overall
structure. The designs have been
created by some of the world’s
leading contemporary architects,
including Portzamparc, Fontès,
Lehmann and others. Along the
banks of the Lez River, the Town
Hall is an architectural wonder
created by Jean Nouvel
and François Fontès.

the school. In the afternoons,
your teacher takes you to meet
different people. These times
of «real-life» exchanges will
then be re-worked in class. This

communicate in French. You
also lunch every day with your

“300 days’ sunshine per year;
all my favourite sports on
hand, both water sports on
the sea and mountain sports;
the city is both ancient and
modern; you find people there
from all over the world, with a
range of different cultures; a
city which lives to the rhythm
of festivals all year round,
there is always something
going on; great wines,
colourful cuisine...: just some
of my memories of
