1 - Cathédrale Saint-Etienne
(on your right when exiting the Tourist Office)
Dating from the 12th century and constructed
in the form of a Latin cross, the cathedral has
undergone various transformations up to the
19th century. A stage to the Tro Breiz Breton
pilgrimage that glorifies the seven founder saints
of Brittany, it has conserved relics from Saints
Brieuc, Guillaume and Etienne, the first martyr
and patron saint of the Cathedral.
After visiting the interior of the cathedral, cross
the car-park face the grills of the Prefecture and
take the narrow little Pohel street on the right.

sculpted ornaments. The Place or square gets its
name from the activities of the Port du Légué
in addition to cod fishing, which was commerce
in rolls of linen of the hinterland. The region
of semi-fine tissues called « Bretagne » (regions
of Quintin, Moncontour and Uzel) created the
industry of clothing, sheets, house linen in the
17th century. Sails for ships were loaded at Légué
and transported by coastal vessels to St Malo for
shipment to Spain (Cadis). At the far end of the
little square take the Georges Brassens alley on
the right.

The sculpted decoration is in the Renaissance
style.
6 - Maison Le Ribeault
This very pretty house dating from the end of the
15th century presents a elevation with a gable over
the street and corbels. Walk down the rue Fardel
and stand under the old covered market.
3 - Haut (Top) de la rue Fardel
At no32, the pink façade with curved half columns
and simplified roofs bears witness to the carpenter’s art rather than that of the sculptor. After the
little square, walk up the rue du Parc and go down
via the passage after the car-park on your right.
Arriving in rue Notre Dame turn right and you
will find the little St Brieuc alley 200m to the left.
7 – On the right forming a corner with the Place
de la Cathedrale, the Colombage houses bear witness to the late Breton Renaissance of the early
17th century. Of greater size the contemporary
Halles were opened in November 1986. Note the
north wall of the cathedral : Gargoyles, contreforts, emplacements for shop stalls are still visible.
Saint « Chiot » in a niche in the wall indicated
the latrines. Stroll down rue Saint Jacques left of
the new Halles (covered market) and enter rue de
Gouët (from the roundabout).
4 - Chapelle Saint-Brieuc Notre-Dame-de-la-Fontaine
You are on the historical site of the first origins
of the town of Saint Brieuc. This fountain is
in fact built on the emplacement of the oratory
which Saint Brieuc, founder of the town, and his
followers established on their arrival from Britain
in the mid 7th century. It is said that the healing
waters of the Orel fountain ease the malady called
St Antoine’s fire or the ardent lovers’ malaise. The
chapel is open to the public on Wednesdays and
Fridays in Summer. Retrace your steps and return
to the town centre via rue Notre Dame followed by
the entry of rue Quinquaine.
5 – Turning towards the Place au Lin, take note of
the house at 9 rue Quinquaine with a mixed décor
8 - Maison de la Barrière
The house at 16 rue de Gouët was previously
called « Maison de la Barrière » (Barrier House)
and dates from the 16th century. This name is
based on its location on the Guet path where there
was once a barrier and the foundations of a toll
office for entry into the town. Retrace your steps
and turn left into rue Houvenagle.
9 - Maisons rue Houvenagle 
At n° 4 and 6. Previously called « Grand’Rue des
Marchands », rue Houvenagle was at the start
of the 19th century one of the most commercial
streets in St Brieuc, lined by the houses of ship

owners and private residences.
A few meters further up go through the stone
porch and descend the steps to the Place du Chai.
The square was opened up in the 1980’s. At the
end on the left, exit the square via another porch
located to the right of the Tourist Office. Take
rue Saint Gouéno immediately on the right when
exiting the passage.
10 - Hôtel Le Mintier 
(Baker on the ground floor)
Take the time to admire the attractive
Renaissance door of this private residence from
the 16th century. Cross the street and take rue
Saint Gilles and go around the chevet
of the cathedral to the left.
11 - Le Pavillon Bellescize
Place des Droits de L’Homme
The new Episcopal manor was built in 1780
in the baroque style of the 18th century.
Go along the cathedral by the left side. At the
end on the left of the Place du Général De
Gaulle enter through the grey granite porch
(closes at certain times) : This is the manor of
Quicangrogne (12) built in the 15th century and
added to in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Du
Rouvre and Bréhand families. In this Renaissance
style residence, note the dormers with steep roofs,
the ornamentation (mitres and crosses) and the
seashell forms. This building was the seat of the
bishop in 1877. One of the owners was decorated
with the Order of Saint-Esprit source of the
current name.
13 - L’Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall): The municipal
authorities have occupied this building since
1805, when a fire partly destroyed the Maison
commune where they met before, this building
became today’s Prefecture. The current façade
was built in 1889 by architects Alphonse Guépin
and Alexandre Angier. The hostelry or Montagne
ceded its place to the current Hotel de Ville in the
mid 19th century.

in the 19th century.

Fishing on foot (whelking), market gardening, salt production, etc. are evoked through
scenes and games. The fabrication of bricks
with the Hoffmann furnace from 1870, entirely restored, enables a better understanding of this old factory. The golden age of

(8ha) From the town centre, take the direction of the quartier Saint-Michel, then go
towards the « Aubé Tertre ». Pass the little
bridge above the RN12, the entrance to the
park is on your left. (access to the port, and
visits the maritime activities centre, traditionnal sailing boats, ship owners houses,
etc.). Open to the public everyday except
bank holidays: 9am to 5pm (up to 7pm in
Summer). This garden was part of the private residence of a Breton ship owner :
Le Gualès de Mézaubran. The villa
continues to dominate the port of Légué
today. The main route opened up by the
ship owner to access the port is 600m long.
Lined with Lime trees the incline attains
10% at its lower end.

Vallée du Gouédic
A veritable green strip in the town,
the valley provides a pedestrian link
between the port and Brézillet.
Great lawn (4 hectares), a nice place to relax
and perhaps have a picnic (4 tables).
There is also a basket-ball court.

This public garden surrounding the Palais
de Justice, is planted with rare species
(Gingko, Biloba, Lebanese Ceder, Purple
Beech, Sequoia)
Sculptures form a little open air gallery.
Of particular interest are the sculptures
« la forme se dégageant de la matière » by
Paul le Goff, « la Bretonne du Goëlo » by
Francis Renauld and the bust of Villiers
de L’Isle Adam by Elie Le Goff. Behind the
Palais de Justice there is a pretty panoramic
view of Gouédic valley and the old central
station of the « Petit Train des Cotes du
Nord » Lighting circuit in December).

Saint-Brieuc is a shoppers town offering
over 350 boutiques each and everyone of
which will attempt to draw you in with its
own particular style. From chic prêt-à-porter fashions and classic designs to sporting

January and July are particularly well frequented and of course the new collections
play at seduction in mid-season. The various

classic clothes, but also through personalized interiors where the French art of
dining with a certain elegance and
comfort is a vital ingredient.

Saint-Jacques { Scallops }
The scallop shell (coquille Saint Jacques)
has been a symbol since the Middle Ages for
pilgrims on the Saint Jacques de Compostelle pilgrimage (pilgrims walk from Brittany
to Gallicia in Spain or stages of the route),
an emblem in furniture, and of course a
much appreciated delicacy of amateurs
of good food lending itself as it does to
many different preparations. Forming an
important part of the staple diet of coastal
peoples from the end of the Ice Age, Saint
Jacques Scallops are not only a delectable
natural seafood but can be found on our
restaurant tables and market stalls today.

Why are they called ‘Saint Jacques’ scallops?
According to the story in the year 830 AD a
mysterious star led a humble Shepard to the
tomb of Saint Jacques in the overgrown and
forgotten ruins of the palace of Louve. The
body and relics of the saint were exhumed
and the area was called “Campos Stella” the
Field of Stars. King Alphonse II decided to
build a sanctuary on the site that became
one of the four great Christian pilgrimages
of the Middle Ages along with Jerusalem,
Rome, and Mont Saint Michel. Pilgrims
travelled under a symbol that announced
them as such. The scallop shell became
known as the ‘Saint Jacques’ and symbolized the apostles humility. Gradually as the
image of the Saint Jacques began to appear
on chapels and on the bags and clothes of
pilgrims, the Saints Jacques scallop shell
became the symbol of not only pilgrims
travelling on the route of Saint-Jacques de
Compostelle, but of all pilgrims. As well as
offering protection from banditry (pilgrims
were supposed to travel in poverty) it
enabled pilgrims to recognize others on the
same pilgrimage, to drink from wells or ask
for alms (to give alms was to receive grace).
And now a brief description of the Saint
Jacques scallop.
The Coquille Saint Jacques is of the Scallop
family which includes over 400 species, of
which only 2 are found in Western European waters, the Pecten Maximus is the
true Coquille Saint Jacques and is found
from Normandy through to the Bay of
Saint Brieuc and on the Atlantic coast.
La moule de bouchot
{ The Long-Line Mussel }. Around 1232
AD an Irishman Patrick Walton was shipwrecked close to a little village to the north
of La Rochelle : Either the village of Charron or Estande, these questions tend to be
hotly contested! In order to avoid starving
to death he planted pickets in the tidal sands
with nets to catch birds. Little mussels
attached themselves to the wooden pickets
and grew quite rapidly. Remarking this, our
enterprising Irishman multiplied the number
of pickets which he called « bout choat »
(long lines). Today a ‘Boucholeur’ indicates
a person who farms mussels and the pickets
that you see in the Bay are called « bouchots ».
With over 100 km of « Bouchots », the Bay
of Saint Brieuc supplies 10% of the annual
French production of mussels between
March and December, that is between
3000 and 4000 tons. 2 species of mussel
are distinguished. The Wild mussel (Gallo
provinciallis) adapted to the local climate and
commercialized from March to June and the
Cultivated mussel (Mytilus edulis) sold from
July to December. These mussels have earned
the quality designation « Moules de Bouchot
élevées en France » and are exceptionally
tender and tasty.

The Marchés (Markets) are a veritable
institution here. Rich in colour, scents and
flavours, the stalls are burgeoning with local
produce. This is the occasion to immerse
yourself totally in the local culture. Amidst
the cries of the vendors, the scents and colours mingle and the shopping bags are filled
with tasty meals to be degusted at leisure.
