Taking Part in an Ideal
I t is my understanding that part of the strategy for a good electoral campaign is not only to unite everyone
in communion with your political ideology, but gain support at every level, including financial. When someone
joins a political party, or partakes in a cause, they develop a great energy from within which leads them to
believe that whatever they are doing will make a change in the world we live in.
In the First Reading, as well as in the Sunday’s Gospel, we can see that there are two "unique groups" who
feel "privileged" to share the same mission. In the case of Moses, the Lord wants to make others partake in the
mission that He has entrusted to him; therefore the Lord makes His Spirit rest on the elders, so they may partake
in this same mission. Despite the fact that Eldad and Medad have been pre-ordained to work with Moses, Joshua
(Moses' assistant) does not find them worthy to receive such great honor due to their absence at camp during the moment in which the
Spirit of God rested with the elders. In others words, Joshua disregarded them because of their absence.
The same thing happens in the gospel when John, the youngest disciple, verbalizes his inconformity to Jesus as he sees someone
using Jesus’ holy name and doing that which he believed exclusively belonged to the disciples and was not to be done by others who
believed in the power of Jesus.
Typically, people feel that their accomplishments entitle them to certain privileges. Though apostolic zeal is a healthy notion of
stewardship; we must understand that the work and presence of the kingdom of God is far beyond our human capacities. Although by
the grace of baptism we can participate in this noble mission, we cannot limit the greatness of God solely to our actions.
The response to this superiority complex is reflected in Jesus' affirmation: "for whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because
of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward". As John Shea affirms "the kingdom of God is
greater than the disciple's action, which also includes small gestures of hospitality". God is honored through a life of service;
additionally we receive blessings by means of those small works that lead us to practice charity with others.If we have the human
ability to identify ourselves with an ideal and we desire to cooperate with this cause in every aspect, through the gospel and thanks to
our baptism, we already partake in the great mission of evangelization. Nevertheless, we still have to show some more interest so that
God, and the greatness of His kingdom, can become a reality among us. Many of us have the notion, but have yet to understand the
greatness of being one with God in the mission of proclaiming His presence among us.I pray that the Spirit of God will grant us the
passion of the apostle James, so that we may also have the courage to invite others in as God wishes us to honor Him.

Parte de la estrategia para una buena campaña electoral, tengo entendido, es tratar de hacer que muchos, no
sólo comulguen con un ideal, pero que el apoyo se dé a todo nivel, incluyendo el económico. Cuando una
persona se hace parte de un partido o es partidario de una causa, cualquiera que esta sea, se desarrolla dentro de
esa persona una gran energía que lo lleva a creerse único en su identificación con lo que está haciendo.
En la primera lectura y el evangelio, para este fin de semana, podemos notar que existen dos “grupos
únicos”, quienes se consideran “privilegiados” al compartir de una misma misión. En el caso de Moisés, el Señor
quiere hacer partícipes a otros de la misión que a él le ha confiado y es por eso que hace que su Espíritu, cubra
con su gracia a otros ancianos para compartir la misión de Moisés. A pesar de que Eldad y Medad han sido preordenados o escogidos para trabajar con Moisés, Josué, asistente de Moisés, no los consideran dignos de recibir tan gran honor por
estar ausentes del campamento en el momento en que el espíritu de Dios se daba a los ancianos. En otras palabras, Josué los
descalifica por su ausencia.
La misma experiencia se repite en el evangelio cuando Juan, el más joven de los discípulos, presenta su inconformismo ante Jesús
al ver que alguien, usando el nombre de Jesús, está haciendo lo que ellos creían era exclusivo para los discípulos y no para otros
quienes creen en el poder de Jesús.
Una reacción típica del ser humano quien se considera que por ser alguien o hacer algo, ya cuenta con el privilegio sobre otros.
Aunque un celo apostólico es una noción saludable de co-responsabilidad, debemos entender que el trabajo y presencia del Reino de
Dios es más amplio que nuestras capacidades humanas. Aunque por la gracia de nuestro bautismo participamos de tan noble misión,
no podemos limitar la grandeza de Dios sólo a nuestras acciones.
La contraparte a esta actitud de grandeza se refleja en la afirmación de Jesús quien dice, “todo aquel que les dé a beber un vaso de
agua por el hecho de que son de Cristo, les aseguro que no se quedará sin recompensa”. Como afirma el John Shea “el Reino de Dios
es más grande que la acción del discípulo, también incluye los pequeños gestos de hospitalidad”. A Dios lo honramos con una vida de
servicio, pero al igual se reciben bendiciones por aquellas acciones pequeñas que nos llevan a practicar la caridad con los demás.
Si humanamente tenemos la habilidad de identificarnos con un ideal y deseamos colaborar a todo nivel con esa causa;
evangélicamente, y gracias a nuestro bautismo, ya todos participamos de esa gran misión de evangelizar. Claro está que aún nos falta
un poco mas de interés para que Dios y la grandeza de su Reino sea una realidad grande en nuestro medio. Muchos tenemos la
noción, pero no hemos entendido la grandeza de ser uno con Dios en la misión de proclamar su presencia entre nosotros.
Ojala que el Espíritu de Dios nos conceda la pasión del apóstol Santiago para que tengamos el valor de invitar a otros como Dios
desea que lo honremos.

LIFENET is organizing a “40 Days for Life” effort
of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion in
America from Wednesday, September 26 – Sunday,
November 4. We are asking people to come and
pray for one hour a week for 6 weeks between the
hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM at the Social
Security Building in Montclair, 396 Bloomfield

Welcome the Glorious
Month of October
October is one of my favorite months of the year. It has
yet to begin and I am already dreaming of the aroma of
pumpkin pie and pastries, as well as the delicious flavor of
pumpkin spice latte, which are just a few of the traditional
treats we enjoy during this time of the year. I have always
said that the month of October is one of the most romantic
months of the year. The change in temperature and the
transformation of trees with their multi-colored leaves are
reasons to write a poem, or perhaps compose some lyrics for
a new song. I have always thought that autumn is the
opportunity to strengthen the bond of love, or fall in love once
again.
During this month, we have many activities going on. Allow
me to remind you of some:
•
The Holy Rosary is recited every Saturday at 6:00 AM.
I know for many of us it is a small sacrifice; however, it is
important that we continue this tradition, especially in
asking the Lord for forgiveness for abortion, which is one
of the greatest sins.
•
The blessing of our pets will take place on Thursday,
October 4 at 6:00 PM. We will bless our pets in honor of
St. Francis of Assisi, who had a great love for animals. I
hope you bring those beautiful creatures that you
consider part of your family, so that together we may
thank God and ask for His blessings upon them.
•
The Holy Mass for the sick, with the sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick, will take place on Friday, October
5th at 7:00 PM. I invite, in a very special way, all cancer
survivors and anyone who has overcome any chronic
illness. If you, or someone you know, can benefit from
this most beautiful sacrament, please make the
necessary arrangements to join us for this Holy Mass.
There are many other activities here at St. Anthony’s, but due
to space limitations, I can only mention a few. I hope you will
participate in these upcoming events.
As always, we place ourselves in the hands and care of our
Blessed Mother and our patron, Saint Anthony.

Mes de Octubre
Octubre es uno de mis meses favoritos. Desde ya
empiezo a soñar con el aroma de las tortas o pasteles de las
calabazas, y a imaginarme ese delicioso sabor de la melaza,
tan típicos de ésta época. Siempre he dicho que el mes de
octubre es el mes más romántico del año. El cambio de
temperaturas, la transformación de los árboles y los
diferentes colores de las hojas, debilitadas por el frio, son
motivos para componer un poema o quizás escribir las liricas
de una nueva canción. Siempre he creído que el otoño es la
oportunidad de fortalecer el amor o enamorarse una vez más.
Durante éste mes son varias las actividades que tenemos,
permítame recordarle algunas de ellas:
•
El Santo Rosario todos los sábados a las 6:00 AM. Sé
que para muchos de nosotros es un pequeño sacrificio,
pero ahí está la importancia de hacerlo, sobre todo para
que pidamos perdón por el gran pecado del aborto.
•
La bendición de nuestras mascotas, en honor a San
Francisco de Asís, el gran amante de los animales. El
jueves 4 de octubre a las 6:00 PM, vamos a bendecir
todas nuestras mascotas. Espero que traigan esas
bellas criaturas que hacen parte de nuestra familia para
que juntos, agradezcamos a Dios por ellos y pidamos
una bendición para ellos.
•
La Santa Misa para los enfermos con el Sacramento de
la santa Unción. El viernes 5 de octubre en la Santa
Misa de las 7:00 PM. Les extendemos una invitación
muy especial a los sobrevivientes de cáncer u otras
enfermedades crónicas. Si usted o alguien se puede
beneficiar de este bellísimo sacramento, haga todo lo
posible por atender a esta santa Misa.
Hay otras actividades, pero la limitación de nuestro espacio
sólo me permite publicar estas, las cuales son las más
prontas, para que ustedes puedan participar de ellas.
Como siempre, nos encomendamos al cuidado de nuestra
Madre del cielo y la de San Antonio, nuestro Patrono.
