Liz was 16 weeks pregnant when she and her husband learned their unborn baby had a
congenital heart defect and would need corrective surgery right after he was born. They
began looking for surgeons and facilities as far away as Pittsburgh and Boston, but no place
seemed a good fit. Then they visited the Cardiac Center at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital
and knew immediately that they were in the right place; they felt at ease and safe. Four days
after Quint was born the cardiac team operated on the tiny Quint. The surgery went
perfectly and the team approach to providing care was outstanding. “They all took such good
care of us. It’s hard to believe any other hospital would have measured up,” says Liz. Today
Quint is a healthy, adventurous and happy one year old thanks to the world-class cardiac
care he received at birth.

Leadership Message
In so many ways, this has been a momentous year for Memorial
Healthcare System. We broke ground on our new Joe DiMaggio
Children’s Hospital and are on track to open in summer 2011. This is
possible because of the ongoing success of our $36 million capital
campaign, “Believe – You Can Make a Difference.” Through your
contributions to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, we have
reached nearly 80 percent of our goal. This support will help us meet the
future healthcare demands of our community.
Frank V. Sacco, FACHE
President & Chief Executive Officer
Memorial Healthcare System
Memorial Healthcare System has been a beacon of excellence throughout its
distinguished 57-year history. Now the fifth-largest public healthcare system
in the country, we have outperformed the industry by almost every measure.
We have built an outstanding reputation for providing extraordinary
healthcare – and strongly believe that focusing on patients and their families
is vital to the culture of all great hospitals. Memorial Healthcare System is
one of the nation’s leaders in safety, quality and service.
Memorial Healthcare System ended the year in the strongest financial
position in our history. Moreover, we are one of a few comparable public
healthcare systems nationwide with an Aa3 / AA- or higher bond rating
S
by Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s, respectively. Working together, we
have been able to overcome challenging economic conditions nationally
and a steep rise in indigent care and uncompensated care levels locally.
Memorial’s financial strength helped us to continue our multiyear history
of providing tax relief to the taxpayers in south Broward County.
Memorial Healthcare System is ranked sixth in the nation on the Modern
Healthcare “Best Places to Work in Healthcare” list of top 100 employers,
and for the second consecutive year is among Florida’s top 100 “Best
Companies to Work For” and the top-ranked healthcare system statewide
as recognized by Florida Trend magazine. Impressively, as one of just
three healthcare systems nationwide, and the only Florida honoree to
receive the 2010 Premier Award for Quality, Memorial Healthcare System
is in the top 1 percent nationwide for patient care.
Today, we are fully engaged in providing those entrusted to our care with
“The Memorial Experience” that exceeds their needs and expectations.
At the same time, we are intensely focused on envisioning and preparing
for tomorrow.
S
Brian D. Schwartz
Chairman
Memorial Foundation
Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital Foundation
First, I want to acknowledge what a pleasure it has been to serve as the
Foundations’ Chairman for the past three years. The successes of this
past year and the positive direction of the Foundations reflects the work
of our Board of Directors, Foundation staff, and most importantly the loyal
support of donors who have so generously supported the work of these
two outstanding organizations.
The Foundations’ fund raising events were very successful this year. The
addition of the ANF Tour de Broward to the Memorial Classic, Conine
Classic, and Diamond Angels Gala brought the fund raising totals of those
major events to nearly $1.8 million. The Foundations’ involvement in more
than 100 community events and activities brought in an additional $555,000.
Rarely does someone have the opportunity to hand the gavel of
leadership back to the person he took it from, but such is the case as I
return the Foundations’ chairmanship back to Dr. Gary Birken. His return is
appropriate for many reasons, most importantly because of his long
history of involvement with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and the
opportunity to return to the helm as we close in on the most important
date in our history – the opening of the new Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital during summer 2011.
It was a challenging year for the Foundations’ Capital Campaign as the
economic setbacks of many South Florida donors delayed pledge
payments and reduced new commitments. Despite these obstacles, the
Capital Campaign is having a significant and visible impact on Memorial
Healthcare System. The Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit opened at
the beginning of the fiscal year with gifts and pledges of more than $5
million directed to the new facility. In FY 2010, Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital Foundation began making capital payments to Memorial
Healthcare System for the Wasie NICU, and plans call for the Foundation
to provide capital funding of more than $27 million for the NICU and the
new Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital over a five year period.
Despite an extremely challenging fund raising environment, the
Foundations processed more than 56,000 contributions from more than
10,600 donors in FY 2010 – the largest number of gifts and most donors
during any year in the Foundations’ history.
Our new board members and new donors continue to join an enthusiastic
group of supporters who make our success possible. Your support, the
support of the donors listed in this report, and the support of thousands
of others who we are unable to list, enrich the lives of children and
families everyday. Believe you can make a difference…and you do!

Topping Off Ceremony Brings Broward’s First
Freestanding Children’s Hospital Closer to Reality
The ceremonial “topping off” for the new Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital marked another milestone in
the historic making of Broward’s first stand-alone children’s hospital. Speaking from the heart, Nina
Beauchesne, administrator for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, thanked close to 150 donors and
community members for their support of the new children’s hospital.
“This celebration is about everyone in this room,” Beauchesne said. “Without the support and vision of
many, including administration, donors and the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners,
none of this would be possible.”
At the “topping off” ceremony held May 27th, dignitaries, hospital leaders, physicians, staff, donors and
other invitees had an opportunity to sign their names on the final construction beam. The day before,
hospitalized children signed and placed painted handprints on a kid-sized beam that will be later
displayed at the new facility. To see a video rendition of the new Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital, visit http://www.jdch.com/jdch/flyover.aspx.
Upon completion, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital will have 204 licensed beds. It will have pediatric
operating rooms, radiology services and an oncology area, among other features.
Physicians Support the Believe Capital Campaign
Memorial Healthcare System physicians have always been generous, whether working long hours caring for
their patients or supporting causes that are near and dear to their hearts. In a show of support for the new
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Healthcare System, Memorial physicians and physician groups
have pledged over $2,600,000 to the Believe Campaign, representing 8% of the campaign goal of $36,000,000.
“Philanthropy is critical for us now and will be even more important going forward,” said Dr. Atif Hussein,
Medical Director of Memorial Cancer Institute. “I am happy to say that almost every one of the physicians in
the Memorial Cancer Institute value philanthropy and personally have supported the Believe Campaign.”
“Whether through a Memorial Angel caregiver tribute, attending a special event or giving to the Believe Capital
Campaign, everyone can do their part to support Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations,”
according to Dr. Allen Greissman, Chief of Pediatric Intensive Care. “Our physician group practice was happy to
make a gift to the Campaign; we know that philanthropy is critical to the hospital’s success.”

you can make a difference
Mark Goldstein Family
As a parent, whose son was diagnosed with a brain tumor at seven years old and was a
survivor for 14 years, I wanted my son to receive the finest and most compassionate care
available. Dealing with a crucial and life-threatening situation, we felt it in the best interest of
our son David, to move to South Florida to be close to our family for support and love. David's
medical team and oncologist at Mass General Hospital in Boston recommended that Joe
DiMaggio Children's Hospital would provide David with the exceptional medical attention and
expertise that was needed in his situation. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital lived up to its
reputation of clinical excellence and their commitment to family-centered care enabled my
family to be intimately involved with every aspect of his care. In addition to caring for my son,
they also cared for my family during a very difficult time. Unfortunately our son passed away
from this insidious disease in 2005, but the out-pouring of support, friendship and love that has
become the model for which the staff of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital lives by is a great
feeling of comfort for any family. To show my gratitude and commitment, I joined the Joe
DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation Board of Directors in 2007 to help ensure that the
excellent oncology programs and services will be available to everyone in our community for
generations to come, regardless of whether they can pay or not. Our family decided to make a
philanthropic gift to name a suite on the oncology floor of the new Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital. We feel this is a wonderful way to honor our son.
Larry Share Family
Larry Share has a passion for philanthropy and particularly for children. “It has always been an
easy choice for me to direct my philanthropy towards children. My own children and grandchildren
bring me so much joy; it breaks my heart when I hear about families less fortunate.” That is why
he takes such pleasure in passing out toys during the holidays and why the Share family decided
to help children all year long by naming a suite on the oncology floor of the new Joe DiMaggio
Children’s Hospital. Additionally, he established a fund to assist families with children in the
hospital. “There are so many great stories every day at the hospital and we are grateful that we
can help some of these families.” One of the Shares’ favorite stories was about a child of a U.S.
serviceman stationed in Guantanamo Bay who was bitten by a dog. The child was airlifted to Joe
DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for surgery but the family had no money for a hotel room. The
Share Family Fund generously paid for their hotel room so the family could stay together. While
Larry is an extremely successful businessman, he likes to think that his greatest successes are
measured by the smiles on the faces of the children and families he helps.

In 2006, Leeza’s Place celebrated its
grand opening in Memorial Hospital
Pembroke. Nat Gross stood among the
crowd, hearing the words of the National
Co-Founder, Leeza Gibbons. Mr. Gross
cared for his wife, Ana Gross, who was
diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He struggled
with his wife’s paranoia, aggression,
wandering, and elevated levels of
confusion. Nat came to Leeza’s Place in
search of a safe haven and became the
Center’s first volunteer. Since 2006, he
has committed five days, 32 hours per
week of his time and has provided an
endless source of nurturing, love, and
support to thousands of caregivers in
Broward County. Nat always has a smile
and a hug for those in need, as well as the
perfect words to inspire and heal. He is
the shoulder caregivers cry on, as well as
the warmth and love they need in their
most challenging moments. Support from
Memorial Foundation helps Leeza’s Place
provide continuing information and
support to caregivers of patients with
Alzheimer’s disease and other
memory disorders.

Lee Goldberg remembers one day thinking about “when I leave and that I want to leave a mark,
to leave something for someone who will really need it. And, I was looking for some place to put my soul…”
She had heard about cancer programs at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and decided she wanted to do
something to take care of a child. Lee made arrangements for a contribution to Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital Foundation, naming the Foundation as a beneficiary in her trust.
“Most people have more than they’ll ever need. We all do things to make ourselves feel good, but we
need to do something that really is good. I thought, what will happen to my things? Where will they go?
I wanted to leave something meaningful behind, something that would be put to good use.”
And Lee Goldberg believes that healthcare for future generations of children coming through Joe DiMaggio
Children’s Hospital is a good thing.

Athletes, celebrities, fans, and friends of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital gathered the weekend of January 29th and 30th to celebrate the 22nd Annual
Memorial Classic. The Memorial Classic, which included the Auction and Players’ Reception and the Joe DiMaggio Legends Game, raised nearly $1 million for
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s new Pediatric Oncology unit. A crowd of nearly 2,000 people attended Friday evening’s Auction and Players’ Reception at
Hard Rock Live, which included sports and entertainment memorabilia, political collectibles, and unique one-of-a-kind items. More than sixty former Major
League Baseball players competed in Saturday’s Legends Game at Fort Lauderdale Baseball Stadium with thousands of cheering fans in attendance. This
popular weekend would not have been possible without the participation and generosity of the players, volunteers, and sponsors.

On January 25, 2010, former Florida Marlin Jeff Conine and his wife Cindy hosted the 16th Annual Conine All-Star Golf Classic. Celebrity golfers, dedicated sponsors and
others participated in the event held at The Club at Emerald Hills, the home of the event since its inception. Funds raised by the Conine Classic, totaling over $210,000 this
year, support the day-to-day operations of the Conine Clubhouse, a home-away-from-home for children and families receiving care at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. In
addition, funds raised from the Conine Yearbook were donated to the Bone Marrow Transplant Fund at Memorial Cancer Institute, in honor of Conine Classic founder,
Howard J. Zimmerman. We extend our thanks to Jeff, Cindy, Chair Greg Marsh, the members of the Conine Committee, our volunteers and sponsors.

Calder supports the Conine Classic to provide assistance to this
extremely valuable service that the Conine Clubhouse provides for
families who are in need of a place to stay while their children are
contending with unfortunate medical illness. The talented professionals
at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital who care for those in need are
some of the most dedicated and committed people that I have had the
pleasure of working with. Additionally, from a personal perspective,
Jeff and Cindy Connie’s generosity and charitable spirit is
infectious and inspiring to the point of wanting to be
associated with them in every way.

Diamond Angels’ Fairy Tale Ball Sponsors
The 6th Annual Diamond Angels Fairy Tale Ball was held November 9, 2009, to benefit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. Guests enjoyed a
“Sword in the Stone” themed extravaganza, which included a comedy night, golf and tennis tournaments, a festive banquet and dancing to the tunes of
classic rock’s most distinguished artists. The event raised over $355,000 for the Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Diamond Angels Family Fund that
helps families with nonmedical expenses during treatment. The Diamond Angels are a dedicated group of women who serve as advocates and fundraisers for
the hospital, and help us care for our community’s children by generating significant philanthropic dollars.

I am very proud and honored to
be part of such a wonderful organization
as the Diamond Angels. As a mother
of three who gave birth to all of my
children here, this hospital has
extraordinary significance to me,
since I too, was born here.
The Diamond Angels are a unique
group of women who work tirelessly
to support the needs of children and
their families as these children are
faced with the most difficult times
of their lives. Without the love and
support of our community, it would
not be possible to reach our goal to
provide the health care necessary to
save many of these children's lives.

ANF Group Tour de Broward
The inaugural ANF Group Tour de Broward presented by ZMotion was held on a crisp Valentine’s Day morning, February 14, 2010 at Miramar Regional Park.
Over 1,500 participated in the multi-tiered event that raised more than $260,000 towards the building of Broward County’s only free-standing children’s hospital
-- Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Five different fitness challenges were held that included riding, running, walking and spinning. Everything provided at the
event, from food to free entertainment, was donated by local businesses and organizations. Participants were encouraged by celebrity emcees Joe Rose from
NBC6 and WQAM and Krisiti Kruger from WPLG Local 10. The following corporate sponsors donated $1,000 and above in support of the event. We extend our
thanks to ANF Group and ZMotion in addition to the staff, volunteers, teams and participants for making Tour de Broward a tremendous success.
“
Through my involvement
in the sport of cycling I realized
that Broward County needed
a signature cycling event.
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s
partnership with our community
provided the ideal opportunity
for cyclists to participate in their
beloved sport while giving back to the
