The City of Coral Springs Public Art Program is looking to purchase
a commissioned sculpture significant in size for the newly created
ArtWalk on NW 31st Court.

ARTWORK DESCRIPTION, SCHEDULE AND BUDGET
Public Art Project Description
As part of Coral Springs’ dedication to the arts, the Public Art Committee is looking to commission an
artist to create a sculpture for the entry way into the newly created NW 31st Court ArtWalk. The ArtWalk
construction begins August 27, 2014, and will be finished June 2015. This sculpture should be significant
in size and be able to hold its own as an entryway piece.
Description of ArtWalk
The Downtown ArtWalk was designed as a “Unique” walkable connection from the planned Downtown
Core Area to adjacent quadrants. The Artwalk is approximately 1,300 linear feet running along the north
side of NW 31 Court and will provide the community the ability to safely walk back and forth between
the Downtown Core Area and The Walk.

Qualities of Artwork
This Call to Artists is emphasizing the City of Coral Springs’ desire to commission and purchase artwork
that represents its young, family-oriented community and depicts the city’s mission as the ‘premier city to
live, work and raise a family’. The artwork must be capable of “holding its own” as it will be an entry
piece for the ArtWalk.
The artwork should be durable and require minimal ongoing maintenance. South Florida has a subtropical climate and is hot and humid with an intense sun and seasonal heavy rain. Problems with rust and
fading should be avoided. Resistance to high-speed winds is required. The artwork must be selfsupporting on an open landscape or hardscape and be large in scale, with a height no less than 8 feet.
Themes of the Artwork
The theme of the artwork should promote the City’s mission or represent the vision of Downtown Coral
Springs. All artworks need to be original and unique. Please visit the CRA website for more information

The City is constructing a new linear ArtWalk which will be covering the canal on NW 31st Court. The
City is looking for an entryway sculpture that will channel a linear feeling as well as draw visitors into the
ArtWalk.
Artist Requirements Once Selected:
• Transportation and off-truck loading of the artwork to the specific site in Coral Springs;
• Recommendations of the design of the permanent site;
• Assistance with installation of the artwork;
• One public lecture in Coral Springs;
• A minimum of three meetings with the Public Art Committee to discuss aspects of artwork:
either via phone or in person.

Artwork Purchase Budget
The public art program will pay $50,000 to the selected artist upon approval of design of the artwork and
$50,000 upon installation of artwork. The Public Art Committee’s established budget for the project is
$100,000. The price will include all taxes, fees, labor, transportation costs and lighting. The Public Art
Committee will supply the pad and lighting. Within the fee, the artist will make recommendations to the
city regarding the design of the permanent site and present a public lecture regarding public art. The
remainder will be paid through other Public Art Funds or another grant, if necessary.
ARTIST ELIGIBILITY
The project is open to any professional visual artist with experience implementing their ideas and work in
the public realm. Artist or Professional Artist means a practitioner in the visual arts, generally recognized
by critics and peers as a professional of serious intent and ability. Indications of a person’s status as a
professional artist include, but are not limited to, income realized through the sole commission of artwork,
frequent or consistent art exhibitions, placement of artwork in public institutions or museums, receipt of
honors and awards, and training in the arts.
Artists are NOT eligible who are immediate family or business partners of members of the Public Art
Committee or program staff.
APPLICATION PROCESS
The application process is managed by the City of Coral Springs. The Coral Springs Public Art
Committee serves as the selection committee, along with one business person and one general resident (or
combination of the two) chosen by the Committee.
Criteria for Selecting Proposals
All artists must meet the guidelines of the program.
1. Artistic merit of concept.
2. Style and Appropriateness: Artwork should demonstrate that it is compatible in relationship to
the landscape and Coral Springs Community.
3. Technical Considerations and Feasibility: Including the artist’s artistic history and experience in
completing public art projects within the timeline and budget, as well as the sustainability of the
project.
4. Safety and Maintenance: Artwork should be durable, meet the requirements of insurance
policies and be resistant to theft and or vandalism. Materials should require minimal periodic
maintenance and be readily available if conservation or restoration is necessary.
5. Diversity: Reflects the overall project goal to strive for diversity in style, scale, media and
artists working in traditional and contemporary art forms.

Application Requirements
The information and documentation below must be emailed and/or arrive at the City of Coral Springs
before the stated deadline, November 7, 2014
First Selection (Artists will be narrowed down from their proposals to a shortlist of 5 Artists.)
1. Letter of intent. The letter should be no more than one page in length, include the artist’s
contact information, and explanation of the proposed project.
2. Artist’s resume. A current resume should be submitted for each artist or member of a proposal
team.
3. No more than ten (10) digital color images of the artist’s representative work. JPGs must
be no more than 1920 pixels on the longest side, 72 dpi, and max 15 MB, srgb color space. File
names should include the title of the artwork and artist or team. CDs must be labeled with the
artist’s name and contact information placed in a plastic gem case. Digital images must be
submitted on a PC compatible CD/DVD to avoid formatting issues. Artists applying as a team
may submit 10 digital images of each artist’s work. Slide images will not be accepted.
4. Annotated image list. The image list must include a brief description of each image stating the
title, date, medium, size, location, and commission budget, if the piece was commissioned.
5. Proposed concept sketch. This should be a simple sketch of the artist’s proposed design. This
design does not necessarily have to be the final design submitted by the artist, just an idea. This
will give the Committee an idea of what to expect if the artist is selected for Round Two. Please
include colors, materials and measurements in this sketch.
6. Proposals will not be returned.
Shortlist/Second Selection (The final Artist will be selected from these requirements.)
Upon review of all the proposals in Round One, five (5) artists will be selected to submit the
following information. The final Artist will be selected from these requirements.
Please submit one of the two options:
1. Proposed concept 3D Digital Model. Model must include a scaled plan of the proposed location,
and a plan and dimensioned elevations of the concept. Model must also include perspectives of the
concept, information regarding materials, weights, colors and any other relevant details.
Site Plan:
• Perspective drawing between artwork and sidewalk or other public space.
• Show all design features to create a space with foreground and backdrop for artwork.
• Show pedestrian access to the artwork.
• Hide light fixtures shining on artwork from public view.
2. Proposed concept 3D Model. Model needs to be done to scale of the proposed design. All colors,
images and materials should be done to exact detail.
A budget will also need to be provided. An itemized project budget worksheet (provided) MUST
accompany all proposals.

Other Selection Issues
1. Florida “Sunshine Laws”: All meetings of the Committee are open to the public, are publicly
advertised and are documented through written minutes.
2. Conflict of Interests: Artists with immediate family or business partners on the selection
committee are not eligible to apply. A selection committee member may choose to withdraw from
discussion and voting for any apparent conflict of interest.
3. Public Art Committee Contacts: Artist applicants should not contact Public Art Committee
members between the release of the Call to Artists and the completion of the selection process.
