North Country Fruit & Vegetable Seminar & Trade Show

Now that the growing season is
coming to a close it’s time for the
North Country Fruit and Vegetable Seminar and Trade show!
This year’s event will be held on
October 29th at the Mountain
View Grand Resort in Whitefield.
The daylong event will feature
UNH’s Professor Brent Loy with
an update on recently released
and soon to be release varieties of
pumpkins and squashes. Ruth
Hazzard, UMass’s Vegetable
Specialist will be joining us to
discuss options for extending the
season with low tunnel crops and
long term storage. We will hear
from NH Commissioner of Agriculture, Lorraine Merrill and
Gary Keough, state statistician
from the National Agricultural
Statistics Service about the good
news for the state from the 2012
Census of Agriculture. We’ll also
be facilitating a farmer to farmer
exchange about season extension
and winter marketing options
and getting an update on the
recent revisions to the proposed
rules for implementing the Food
Safety
Modernization
Act
(FSMA).
Lunch will be prepared by the
Mountain View Grand and will
feature a seasonal, local fare.
Guests are encouraged to attend
early and visit the trade show
where a variety of agriculture
vendors will be on hand.

In addition to the educational
programming, 3 pesticide recertification credits will be available
for licensed applicators and there
will be ample time to visit trade
show booths highlighting companies that provide the services,
supplies and equipment needed
for fruit and vegetable production.
NCC holds auditions for Madrigal Dinner
Mark your calendar for the
34th annual Madrigal Dinner
presented by North Country
Chorus. The 2015 edition of this
event will be held Jan 23, 24, and
25 at the Monroe Town Hall in
Monroe, NH.
This year's play was written by
Woody
Starkweather
of
Danville, VT, who will also codirect. The show takes place at
the Spanish court of Isabella and
Ferdinand. Christopher Columbus reports on his discoveries and
displays the "riches" he returned
with - or not. The Inquisitor
Torquemada will ensure that all
activities are ecclesiastically
aligned - or not. There will be a
flashback to happenings on the
Santa Maria - a carping crew,
some curious water sprites, and,
when they make landfall, some
partying natives supplying their
own rendition (or rendering) of
the Boar's Head ceremony.
NCC is holding auditions for a
number of character roles which
vary in number of lines. The parts
being auditioned include (* major
roles): *Queen Isabella, *King
Ferdinand, *Christopher Columbus, *Torquemada the Grand
Inquisitor, Lady-in-Waiting Inez,
two shipmates of Columbus, and
two female water sprites.
Auditions for all speaking roles
will be held by appointment at
three locations:

WorkReadyNH Tuition Free Class
CONWAY, NH – White Mountains Community College is
accepting registrations for the
next Conway area WorkReadyNH class. The three-week, 60
hour class will be held Monday
through Thursday, October 20th
through November 6th, from
9:30am to 3:30pm at Granite
State College. The class is available to NH residents, regardless
of employment status and is completely tuition free to participants.
WorkReadyNH provides tools
to help job seekers assess,
improve and document proficiency levels in math, reading and
locating information and helps
prepare them for today’s workplace through a hands-on classroom soft skills training. Soft
Skills are identified by employers
as some of the most important
skills an applicant or employee
can have. This training covers the
interview process, workplace
communication, conflict resolution, ethics, problem solving,
employer expectations, meeting
etiquette, self-discipline, teambuilding, workplace safety, customer service and diversity. Participants are able to practice their
competencies through the operation of a simulated business
throughout class.
The program is open to NH
residents seeking to enter the
workplace for the first time, to reenter after becoming unemployed
or for those who simply want to
improve their skills and advance
in their careers. Successful graduates earn the National Career
Readiness Certificate and the
White Mountains Community
College soft skills certificate.
WorkReadyNH is a joint effort
of the Community College System of NH and NH Works.

EARLY FALL BAG SALE
Our Corner Store located at 4
Main street in Whitefield will be
holding an early fall bag sale on
Friday and Saturday, October 10
and 11. Cost is $5.00 a bag. We
have a good supply of household
items, cooler weather clothing as
well as books and puzzles. Donations of gently used clothing and
household articles and furniture
are welcome during store hours.
Maybe it’s time to clean out your
closets to keep our shelves
stocked with merchandise to
share with others in the community?
One of our volunteers, a local
nursing professional, will be
available on Friday from
11:00AM to 1:00PM for free
blood pressure and glucose
screenings at our “Ask a Nurse”
table. Questions about other
health issues will also be welcomed.
Our Corner Store is overseen
by an ecumenical board of directors who are affiliated with multiple churches and denominations
in Whitefield, Littleton, and Jefferson. Recipients of funds will
be non-profit community service
groups in the area and individual
community members who find
themselves in need of emergency
assistance.

Grafton County 4-H Leaders’ Association
The Grafton County 4-H
Leaders’ Association is holding
a raffle to support the county
4-H program. Raffle items
include a two-burner infrared
grill valued at more than $250
which was donated by Aubuchon Hardware of Littleton.
