Men's Bible Study The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in many ways similar to our struggles today as Christians. They, too, witnessed division, scandal, immorality, persecution and other trials. In response, St. Paul taught the Corinthians about the Church as the Body of Christ, introducing them to the most powerful gift of all: the Eucharist. Join us for First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community at St. Ambrose Pastoral Center every Saturday. For more information or to register for the study, call Greg Mattingly at 210-2628 or [email protected] Our Sympathy For the families of all those who have died, especially Bonnie Pointer daughter of Anita Forbes A new formation class for Permanent Deacons is being planned. Men over the age of 35 and under the age of 57 (in 2015) are encouraged to consider prayerfully how God might be calling you to this service in the Church. If you would like additional information or have questions, please contact Fr. Steve or Deacon Bill or Deacon Tom at the parish office. The first class of permanent deacons was ordained in 2007, with subsequent classes in 2009 and 2012. Currently, there is a class in formation with ordination upcoming in 2016. (Our own Deacon candidate Jay Wackerly is preparing for ordination with this class). The upcoming class formed would be ordained in 2020. The Springfield diocese has 48 deacons actively serving in parishes and institutions. Please remember St. Ambrose Parish and School in your will and financial planning. Twenty-eighth Sunday First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-10 The mountain dearest to the people of Israel was Mount Zion, the place upon which Jerusalem’s temple was built. The prophet Isaiah, preaching during a time of political upheaval, foresees a day when God will gather on Mount Zion all the people of the world for a great banquet. Second Reading: Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20 On his missionary journeys, Paul took pride in supporting himself as a leatherworker. Now it's different. Paul is in prison and dependent upon his beloved Philippians. They generously sent him help, the only Christian community known to do so. As he now concludes his letter to them, Paul thanks them for their support and encouragement. Scripture Focus: Matthew 22:1-14 In the Scriptures, meals are always occasion of sharing of life, memories and intimacy. This simple human experience represents the rich life shared between God and his people. The wedding banquet especially looks to the end time when God and his people will find a final sharing of life with each other. In this parable the first guests invited refuse to come. The king tells his servants to invite everyone they meet, “the bad as well as the good.” The Church will never be a perfect community of saintly people. All are invited. The only requirement is to receive the Good News willingly. God doesn’t care about the clothes we wear. The point is that to share in the heavenly banquet, one must sincerely be open to the Lord. Reflecting on God’s Word As Catholics we are invited to “come to the feast” at significant moments in our lives. Baptism, First Communion, marriages, ordinations, and funeral rites are all commonly celebrated within the feast of the Eucharist. The clothes we wear—from the baptismal garment to the funeral pall, from fancy wedding grab to simple white albs—reflect our baptismal commitment to be faithful to Christ until we come to the eternal heavenly feast that our Eucharistic celebrations anticipate. All are invited to come to the feast. All are invited to dress in the garment of Christ. Not all respond to the invitation. It has often been asked what would happen if, some Sunday morning, praying as we always do for Christ to come again, Christ actually did return. Would we come to his feast? Would we prefer our small private gathering to the huge mass of people we don’t really want to know? Would we be found wearing the garment of faithfulness we were given in baptism? Where would we be “on that day?” DONUT SUNDAY Please join us on Sunday, Oct. 26th after Masses for donuts, coffee and juice. We thank the St. Ambrose School Parent Association for hosting this month. Free Webinar Series: Building a Better Disciple-This fall the Office for Catechesis will offer a free webinar series for Catholic adults. Over the course of five webinars we will explore what it means to be a Christian through the lens of Acts 2:42. “They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to prayer.” Full information on the series is being posted at webpage BuildingABetterlDisciple.tumbir.com. What follows is a quick overview of the sessions (clicking on the links will take you to the registration page for each webinar). October 13, 2014 Jesus: The Face of Discipleship— Before understanding how to become a disciple, we must first know what a disciple is. Through the persons of Jesus Christ: we will come to know what it means to claim to name Christian. All webinars begin at 7:30pm. (Central Time) and will last 90 minutes. Catechists and teachers in the diocese of Springfield in Illinois who complete all five webinars and submit the requisite forms to their principle or parish catechetical leader will be granted 10 hours of credit in Discipleship and Spirituality. Participation in fewer than five webinars will be awarded with two (2) hours in Personal Spiritual Enrichment for each webinar attended, The participant forms will be e-mailed after each webinar to all who participated.
