To Top-20 in U.S. Men’s Team Championship THE FOG OF BATTLE: Pittsford’s Tim Spitz had to fight his way through the fog, above, as he hit his approach shot to the 10th hole during the second round of the 2014 U.S. Men’s State Team Championship last Wednesday. Hosted by the French Lick Resort’s Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Indiana last week, the USGA’s Men’s Team Championship featured threeman teams from all 50 States, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, in a 54-hole team stroke play competition. The New York State team included Spitz, a member at Monroe Golf Club and a runnerup in the 2009 U.S. Mid-Amateur, Stafford Country Club’s Jim Scorse, named the 2014 RDGA Player of the Year on Tuesday, and Sam Bernstein from New York City and the 2013 Ivy League Player of the Year. By the conclusion of the third round last Thursday, the New York team finished in a tie for 17th place overall. For more about Spitz, Scorse and the U.S. Men’s Team Championship, read this week’s Mulligans column, beginning on page 2. Also announced as part of Tuesday’s Annual Meeting were the RDGA yearend golfing awards, including the District’s top honor, Player of the Year, which went to Stafford member Jim Scorse for an unprecedented 13th time. In winning the 2014 Player of the Year award, Scorse, 49, won a staggering array of tournaments, including the RDGA Mid-Am Championship for a fifth time, as well as the RDGA Match Play Championship for a record sixth time — along with outside titles, such as the Men’s Tournament of Champions. Ironically, the one title that eluded him this year was the RDGA District Championship Ryan Memorial at Stafford in July — although Scorse, a fourtime District champion, did Player of the Year — PAGE 5 2014 Rochester Area Women’s Club Champions BY DAVE EATON With the arrival of autumn, many Rochester area golf courses have concluded their club Club Champion championships for the year — often, the biggest event on the club calendar for members and a source of pride for those am- ateurs who have worked so hard on their game throughout the summer.
