ALUMNI FEATURE
From the STM Mall to the Grammy Stage
Many talented individuals have roamed the halls of St. Thomas More Catholic High School over the past 30 years. They have
gone on to pursue careers as educators, engineers, doctors, attorneys, accountants, and professional athletes, to name a few. There
is a select group, however, that have achieved recognition as musicians. The music industry requires countless hours of practice,
time, energy, and most importantly, getting the “break of a lifetime.”
Five former Cougars got that “break of a lifetime” which earned them a trip to the grandest stage in music – The Grammys.
Eric Adcock ’92
As a member of the renowned
Louisiana band, Roddie Romero &
the Hub City All-Stars, Adcock has
performed internationally at the most
prestigious festivals and venues for over
20 years. Eric began his playing career
with Romero right after high school
graduation. Their band, which Adcock
also manages, is celebrated for their
authenticity in performing and recording
traditional Cajun and Zydeco music
indigenous to South Louisiana. He also
owns and manages their independent
record label, Octavia Records. Their
original songwriting is inspired by
their ability to stay true to their
“Louisiana Roots” inspirations. They are
notorious “Louisiana-Roots-Rockers” who
put on an energetic show which is bound
to make audiences get up and dance!
In 2008, Adcock, Romero and the
rest of the Hub City All-Stars were
nominated for a Grammy on the doublerecord Adcock co-produced and played
on called “The La Louisianne Sessions.”
The Grammy nomination has been one
of many highlights that Adcock’s music
career has given him. “We play locally but
travel around internationally often,” says
Adcock. He also acknowledges that the
past couple of years have been quite the
experience, “Jimmy Buffett asked us to
open for him and his band during the Gulf
Oil Crisis fundraiser – performing in front
of 45,000 people was a mind-blower! We
were one of the opening bands for Tom

organ), Dudley Fruge (drums).
Petty & the Heartbreakers on the main
stage of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage
Festival, and also performed at the famous
Hollywood Bowl amphitheater in Los
Angeles with the Neville Brothers on their
farewell tour in August.”
With a new record in the works,
Adcock relishes the idea of producing
more music, but claims, “the songwriting
and performance piece of all this is what
I really love, of course! It’s been a great
ride doing what I love and exposing others
to our incredibly rich South Louisiana
culture - and it just keeps getting better!”
said Adcock.
C.C. Adcock ’92
Raised in Southwest Louisiana, with
Z y d e c o
bursting
out of every
juke joint,
has
given
Charles
Clinton
Adcock ’92
(no relation C.C. Adcock
to Eric) a
different take on standard four-bar blues.
The Lafayette-born Adcock, a guitarist,
singer, and songwriter, doesn’t play
straight-ahead blues; his music is heavily
laden with unconventional blues-rock
melodies and Zydeco rhythms. He has
logged many thousands of miles touring
with the likes of Bobby Charles, Bo Diddley
and Stanley Dural (better known as
Buckwheat Zydeco) and it shows through
his style, which is fiery, intense, and most
of all, danceable.
Music has always been a part of
Adcock’s life and STM history teacher
Doug Taylor recalls C.C. dozing off one
morning during class. “I passed by his desk
to wake him up and he said ‘Sorry Coach,
I stayed up til 3 this morning; I was having
a jam session with Stevie Ray Vaughn’.”
Coach Taylor politlely reminded Adcock
to invite him next time there was a jam
session!
Adcock later inked a deal with Island
Records after his demo tapes with British
producer Tarka Cordell caught the ears
of some of the label’s executives. In 1994,
Adcock recorded most of his self-titled
debut album in Lafayette and in studios
in Los Angeles. The album included
such local flavor as Tommy McLain and
Warren Storm; he fuses a smorgasbord of
styles, including Louisiana blues, Zydeco,
Cajun, and classic R&B into a musical
gumbo that is uniquely his own. He puts
his own musical stamp on songs by Art
Neville, Fool to Care, Arthur Alexander,
Sally Sue Brown, and Gene Terry, Cindy
Lou. Six years after his first album, Adcock
resurfaced with a reissue of his debut, but
this time around called it House Rocker.
His diversity landed him the first of
his two Grammy nominations in 2007
for producing Doyle Bramhill’s Is It
News album (Best Contemporary Blues
Category), and in 2011 as producer of the
soundtrack for the HBO Original Series
True Blood and also Grand Isle for Steve
Riley & the Mamou Playboys.
Cavan Carruth ’92, Andre Michot ’94,
and Louis Michot ’97
The Lost Bayou Ramblers
The Lost Bayou Ramblers were formed
in 1999 by Louis Michot ’97 (fiddle and
vocals) and his brother Andre Michot ’94
(Cajun accordion and lap steel guitar). The
brothers grew up playing with their father
and uncles, who played traditional Cajun
music as Les Frères Michot. The other
Ramblers are Cavan Carruth ’92 (rhythm
guitar) and Paul Etheredge (drums). The
Lost Bayou Ramblers have toured through
much of the United States, including
performances at the International Country
Music Conference in Nashville, the
Brooklyn Botanic Gardens’ Chile Pepper
Fiesta, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage
Festival and at the historic Preservation
Hall. The Ramblers had their first
international performance in Lyon, France
in November 2004.
Their debut release, Pilette Breakdown,
received critical acclaim across North

Mellow Joy Boys: Une Tasse Cafe featured with the recording of their new album
guest fiddler Wilson Savoy of the Pine Leaf Mammoth Waltz at Dockside Studios in
Boys on a collection of 1930’s era songs Maurice, La. The idea was to incorporate
and classic Cajun Swing. In 2008, the
Ramblers were nominated for a Grammy
Award in the Best Zydeco or Cajun Music
category (a new category for that year)
for their album Live: A La Blue Moon.
Lost Bayou Ramblers was born deep
in South Louisiana performing old
style, predominantly acoustic Cajun
music at clubs and festivals across the
US, Europe, and Canada. After years of
playing traditional style, the Lost Bayou
Ramblers found themselves needing to
grow. The band decided to create a new Louis Michot ’97, Whitney Broussard, Andre
sound that combined not just the sounds Michot ’94, Oscar Courville, Cavan Carruth ’92, &
of their heritage, but all the musical Alan Lafleur of The Lost Bayou Ramblers playing

more influences, sounds, technology,
and stylings with the traditional Cajun
instrumentation. The resulting 11 tracks
speak for themselves.
By chance and by friendship, a number
of talented special guests (including Dr.
John, Scarlett Johansson and Gordon
Gano of Violent Femmes) inspired Lost
Bayou Ramblers by bringing their own
unique backgrounds to the recordings.
The band began experimenting more
in their live shows, and their new
sound was born. It has developed into a
mammoth style that evokes the power of
its predecessors while reaching for the
future; when Lost Bayou Ramblers is at
full fervor, even the traditional accordion
and fiddle take on new modern dynamics.

ALUMNI CAREER DAY
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Great job today, Coach Danny! I thought it was a huge success. The
kids in my sessions were very polite, and asked many great questions.
What a great idea! See you soon!
– Charlotte Busch Cryer ’89
I just wanted to send a quick note of THANKS for a remarkable
Career Day. The schedule ran so smoothly, the presenters in my
room were informative and fun, and the students reported to me that
they enjoyed and appreciated the panels of professionals here today.
Thank you, also, for crafting an event that brought so many alumnae
back to school. I cannot express enough the sense of unity and
friendship I felt having all of them home once again. They reminded
me of the deep connections I had built over my years here as a
student - ones that I hope we are helping to build for our students
now. My spirit was lifted from this event, for I saw the essence of
STM – a lasting spirit-filled community full of “men (and women) for
all seasons.” Thank you, thank you, and thank you. I am looking
forward to Career Day next year. God bless.

How incredible is this. I get to my office this morning and I start
checking my voicemails. One of my voicemails is from an STM student
thanking me for coming to speak yesterday and how much she
enjoyed the day. Just thought I would share with you. Go COUGARS!
– Colby Duhon ’03
I was proud to have been a part of a great new tradition. Go Cougars!
– Dr. Brad Rodrigue ’95 Career Day was a wonderful event. It served as an eye-opening
glimpse into the future for our current students and a celebration of
the accomplishments of our alumni. Our former students used their
STM foundation to rise to positions of great responsibility in myriad
fields and yet their love for St. Thomas More and their time here was
evident.

I believe each of us enjoyed the day as much as the students. Thanks
again for organizing such a great event. It felt so good to be back to
the school that laid the foundation for my future.
– Katie Deranger Bell ’98
Great day! It was truly amazing for me to share my 20 years as an
artist and teacher. Thanks again for inviting us to be a part of this
incredible day.
