Baltimore Watercolor Society: A Mid-Atlantic Organization of Watermedia Artists

Hello Artists,
The weather is cooler, the trees are turning, days are getting shorter and students are back in school.
Changes in season and location can inspire new ideas for artists. I’m spending a couple of weeks in
California this fall with my daughter, son-in-law and grandson. I’ll be doing ‘special’ art during the
trip - little drawings of backhoes, dump trucks, excavators, trash trucks etc. - you get the idea. I hope
you are all inspired by something new.

Last spring the Workshop chair and the board determined it would be helpful to have a survey of
BWS members to better plan future workshops. Our new software offers a good mechanism to create
this, so Rob Talbert put together an online survey, BWS members responded and Rob has compiled
the results. These findings are very helpful to plan workshops that members find most useful. His report follows.

BWS Workshop Interest Survey
Thanks to everyone who completed the recent BWS Workshop interest survey. BWS will use the insights gained from the survey to help
plan workshops for 2015 and beyond.
Here is what over 150 BWS members told us:
1) More than 90% of the respondents plan to take at least one workshop in 2015 and over 50% plan to take two or more workshops.
2) The most important factor reported by respondents in selecting a workshop is the instructor’s painting style (74% of respondents listed
this as “very important.”) Also important are learning from an artist whose work is well known and admired (64% marked as “very important”) and the ability to gain exposure to new art concepts (61% marked as “very important”).
3) Over half of the respondents suggested names of artists to be invited to present workshops, and we greatly appreciate the suggestions.
More than 100 different watercolor instructors were suggested and while a few (Mary Whyte, Ted Nuttall, Brigit O’Connor, Soon Warren and
Charles Reid) were suggested multiple times, the list also included many less-well known teachers including a few BWS board members.

4) The three most popular workshop topic choices were (1) landscape painting, (2) painting more loosely and (3) watercolor techniques. Almost all of the other topics received an expression of interest by over one-third of the respondents.
5) The vast majority of respondents work with transparent watercolor, and about a third of the respondents also work with gauche, or acrylic

6) Almost 70% of the respondents reported that they want to improve their painting for their own sense of accomplishment and that
they have a strong desire to improve. Another motivating factor for
almost 60% of respondents is a goal to be juried into more watercolor shows and contests.
Healing Through the Arts
A group of volunteers hosts healing events throughout the year for
cancer patients at St. Agnes. In the past, they have hosted a watercolor event. The instructor guided patients through healing thoughts
and helped them express their thoughts and feelings using watercolors. Their previous instructor is unavailable. They are reaching out
through BWS for another artist who may be able to help them with

7) The Hawthorne Center in Columbia was reported by 70% of the
respondents as a good location choice, while 45% indicated a location in Montgomery County would be a good location and 35%
would see a location closer to Baltimore as a good location.
BWS will conduct a second survey in October or November to identify BWS members who have an interest in teaching a workshop
or presenting a shorter instructional program, and to solicit interest
from members who would like to assist with workshop administration in exchange for a reduced registration fee. Some BWS members have already volunteered to help during workshops.

Our current plan is to announce the 2015 slate of BWS workshops
before the end of the year along with the dates when registrations
will open on the website.
Selling Smart Online
When buying and selling online, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish the difference between legitimate offers and scams. If a
buyer approaches you online about purchasing a painting, the best
way to stay safe is to request payment up front via Paypal. If accepting a check, notify the buyer that you will need to wait for the check
to clear before shipping the work, and quote an exact price for the
work plus shipping costs. Typical online scams involve sending a
fake check or money order for an amount higher than was requested,
and then asking you to wire back the excess amount, often to an
overseas address.

and the deadline has been extended.
I am currently reorganizing the BWS archives. If any members have
documents, newspaper clippings, member information and/or obituaries related to BWS or BWS members, kindly let me know and I
can arrange to get them from you. Anything may be of possible interest or importance.
The next semi-annual jurying for new Signature members will be
held on October 25, 2014 at Howard County Center for the Arts
in Ellicott City. All interested artists are invited to be candidates for
Signature Artist membership.

Members’ News
Elizabeth Burin’s painting (below) “A Tomb with a View” is among
the works by 156 artists from 39 countries selected in an online juried
competition for the 2014 Art Kudos international exhibition.
Denny Clarke’s painting “Rock Quarry” (below) was juried into the
Keystone National Works on Paper exhibit. It was completed using watercolor, gesso, and acrylic.
April M Rimpo has six paintings in a small group exhibit at the Howard County Arts Council exhibition “Building Perspectives”, which is
open through October 17th. “Tenement,” below
Alexis Lavine recently had paintings accepted to Southern Watercolor,
Watercolor USA, Adirondacks National Exhibition of American watercolors, Watercolor West, North East Watercolor Society, Philadelphia
Watercolor Society, and North Carolina Watercolor Society. Her paintings will also be featured in The Artistic Touch 6, which will be released

Karen Norman had two paintings juried into The Maryland Federation
of Art Circle Gallery’s national juried art exhibition “Strokes of Genius,” October 31-November 22.
Lieta Gerson’s exhibit “A Medley of Colors” is at the Thomas Farm

Joyce Durkin’s painting “Mumbrella” (below) has been accepted into
the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society’s 35th Annual International Exhibition, to be held at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg,
PA. The exhibition runs from November 8, 2014 through February 8,
2015.
