Birutis MA, CCC-SLP; Michele Wesling MA, CCC-SLP Course Description MARIANJOY PROFESSIONAL LEARNING INSTITUTE This course is designed to train the practicing clinician’s eye for pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders. This course will include video examples of clinical assessment, instrumental assessment, and treatment. Participants will be actively involved in assessing clinical disorders and determining treatment strategies given video examples and case study information. Your active involvement is required in order to complete the course and to ensure a dynamic learning experience. Contact hours will be available for nurses who have not previously taken this course. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: 1. Define anatomical and physiological patterns of typical and atypical pediatric feeding and swallowing. 2. Describe components of an effective pediatric clinical swallow assessment and pediatric videofluoroscopic swallow study. 3. Interpret clinical swallow and videofluoroscopic swallow studies to describe feeding and swallowing disorders and determine course of treatment. 4. Identify treatment strategies based on disorder and develop feeding intervention plans. She is a clinical associate professor at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and an attending physician in the Departments of Pediatrics and Orthopedic Surgery Section of Rehabilitation Medicine. She is a founding board member and was the medical director of Almost Home Kids (formerly known as CoachCare Center) in Naperville for many years. Dr. Keen was named a Top Doctor by Chicago Magazine in 2001, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2011, a Patients’ Choice Award Winner in 2011, 2012 Consumers’ Checkbook’s Top Doctors, and has been named one of the Best Doctors in America® by Best Doctors, Inc. She also is an adjunct faculty member of Midwestern University. Dr. Keen is board certified in four specialty areas: physical medicine and rehabilitation; pediatrics; physical medicine and rehabilitation--pediatrics; and neurodevelopmental disabilities. Presenters Rima I. Birutis MA, CCC-SLP Rima Birutis is a speech language pathologist and Master Clinician at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, IL. She has been with Marianjoy for 18 years. Ms. Birutis has worked extensively with inpatient and outpatient pediatric programs. She is Early Intervention certified and has advanced competencies in pediatric feeding and swallowing. She has presented at the state and national levels on the topic of pediatric dysphagia. She is an adjunct professor for Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing at Northern Illinois University.
