Summary of survey method
1.a Name of the readership study
agla a+b Readership Analysis 2012. It was conducted by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Leseranalyse Architekten und
planende Bauingenieure (agla a+b). Nine trade magazines were surveyed, eight of which participated in the research.
2
Definition of population
2.1 Preparation/acquition of population
The population of the survey was specified as architects and civil engineers in the Federal Republic of Germany who,
in the last twelve months prior to the survey, had been involved in civil engineering planning activities or had been
repeatedly involved in decision-making for systems, products or brands in the course of structural engineering
projects in the last twelve months, and who were active in one of the following sectors: architectural practices, civil
engineering firms, architectural and civil engineering firms, construction planning departments of industrial enterprises/
banks/insurance companies, municipal planning and building departments, construction companies and housing
associations, structural engineering companies with 50+ employees, specialist engineering firms for statics/ structural
engineering design. The size of the population was determined in the course of the survey. Sampling frame: addresses
from the 16 Federal States’ Chambers of Architects in the form of a data set (124,992 addresses in total) and, as an
additional sampling frame, addresses from various list brokers for civil engineers. On the basis of experience gathered
in the course of the 2006 survey, the option providing the best quantity and quality of information was selected for
each individual sector.
2.2 Population structure
The agla a+b readership analysis 2012 is based on a population of 105,400 architects and civil engineers, of which
56,300 are architects and 49,100 are civil engineers.
3
Survey method
In the first step, telephone screening interviews were used to determine the size of the population and for recruiting
the respondents. For the main interview, which was also conducted by telephone, respondents were emailed a link that
provided visualisation of the survey materials and, in particular, the title cards to ensure contact with the relevant
media.
4
Sampling method and generation
Representative random sample per interval selected by postcode from the files of architects and civil engineers
(see above).
5
Date of sampling
The samplings were conducted on 3 January 2012 8architects) and 4 January 2012 (civil engineers).
