www.tellabs.com/solutions/integratedmobile/
Mobile providers are finding that the
killer application for mobile services
is mobility itself — the ability to use
advanced wired applications and services
anywhere, anytime, with the personalization that Echo Boomers demand.
Mobile trends suggest a rapid migration
from basic data services like e-mail and
audio downloads to much more delaysensitive, data-rich applications like
video telephony and video conferencing.
This will lead to technology and price
pressure in each portion of the network.
Challenges for mobile operators
The pace of change in the mobile
market is relentless. In order to compete
for subscribers in a market that is near
full saturation, mobile operators must
implement technology that will enable
exciting new, high-value services.
Operators all over the world face the
prospect of having to migrate their Radio
Access Networks (RAN) and backhaul
networks to support advanced 3G
services while continuing to support
their existing 2G services.
These challenges represent the primary
concern among today’s mobile operator
executives. Fortunately, there are
technologies that deal with these
challenges; technologies that will enable
the mobile operator to overcome the
commoditization trend while reducing the
OpEx and CapEx burdens that threaten
their financial health.
This is the key challenge for all mobile
operators and is comprised of several
sub-challenges, including:
Maintaining or reducing Operational
and Capital Expenditures (OpEx and
CapEx) while adding new services
Increasing overall service quality
Increasing revenue through alternative
products and services that offer access
to exciting new content
Supporting the bandwidth flexibility
needed to meet the exponential
demands of High-Speed Packet Access
(HSPA) services

Migrate your RAN backhaul and
cell-site transport
In the RAN, Tellabs has multiple ways
of simplifying and efficiently transporting
backhaul traffic from the core to the cell
site. Tellabs can interface 2G and 3G
traffic from the cell site for transport to
the core in both GSM and Code Division
Multiple Access (CDMA) networks.
T-1 RAN
In T-1/ANSI environments, the Tellabs
IntegratedMobile solution enables
carriers to advance their networks
to support high-speed data (UMTS,
EV-DO), migrate to a packet network
as they choose and aggregate all forms
of cell-site traffic (ATM, TDM, Ethernet,
Multi-Link Point-to-Point Protocol
(MLPPP)) to the core for more efficient
backhaul. Tellabs can interface 2G and
3G traffic from the cell site with the
Tellabs® 8600 Managed Edge System,
which contains both cell-site aggregation
products and larger aggregation nodes

for efficient backhaul to the core. For
2G TDM environments, Tellabs provides
a cell-site solution that aggregates TDM
traffic and converts it to packets for
delivery to the Tellabs® 5500 Digital
Cross-connect System (DCS). The
Tellabs® 5500 DCS can then terminate
the TDM traffic and connect 3G traffic
to the Tellabs 8800 MSR series for
multiservice switching and transport
over an IP/MPLS core.
E-1 RAN
In E-1/ETSI environments, the Tellabs
IntegratedMobile solution provides 2G
and 3G solutions for both GSM and
CDMA networks. The Tellabs® 8100
Managed Access System and the
Tellabs® 6300 Managed Transport
System have proven highly successful
in building pure Layer 1 backhaul
networks for 2G mobile. Together, they
have been installed in more than 150
mobile networks globally, performing
both 64 Kbps and E-1 traffic grooming.
These products will support migration
to 3G by expanding E-1 backhaul
capacity to support ATM/E-1 traffic
from new Node Bs. Next-generation
Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH)
capabilities can be enabled by adding
the appropriate Ethernet interfaces and
switching capabilities to support Release
5 (R5) as backhaul may take the form
of a Layer 2 Ethernet grooming network.
For future-proof packet-based RAN, the
IP/MPLS-based Tellabs® 8600 system
optimizes RAN migration from cell site
to core network. It allows operators to
cap investments to ATM-based RAN
transport while at the same time offering
full IP routing and IP-VPN support for
R5 and all-IP networks. In today’s mobile
network, the Tellabs 8600 system enables
immediate cost savings with synchronized
metro Ethernet backhauling, separating
R99 voice traffic to TDM networks and
HSPA data to DSL transport. The extensive
support of pseudowires allows operators
to deal with TDM, FR, ATM, Ethernet and
IP/MPLS with a single platform.
Offer Differentiated Services
Tellabs differentiates itself with tiered
levels of service based on QoS guarantees.
These flexibly allocated guarantees help
you ensure differentiated revenue streams
for different types of customers.

Evolution of mobile data services
The current generation of mobile services,
based on 2G network technology, has
been dominated by basic voice and
Short Messaging Services (SMS). More
traditional data services (e.g., Internet
access, Virtual Private Network (VPN)
access) on 2G networks have not proved
popular, primarily because of 2G
bandwidth constraints.
Mobile operators are increasingly
focusing on services that offer exciting
new content. These services, with
features like real-time multimedia, fullmotion video, high-fidelity audio and
real-time messaging, can drive higher
levels of profitable revenue.
Projections from research firms such as
Pyramid Research indicate that while
growth in revenue from voice services is
slowing considerably, revenue from the
next generation of data-centric services
will grow steadily to capture 32% of total
revenue by 2009.
These new services will be used as
the building blocks for new mobile
applications including:
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) services: Multimedia Messaging (MMS), Instant
Messaging (IM), video telephony,
real-time multimedia, interactive
gaming and push to talk.
Business services: video conferencing,
Wireless LAN (WLAN) and mobile
Virtual Private Networks (VPN).
Content-to-Person (C2P): high-speed
Internet access, video streaming,
ring tone applications, image and
music downloading.
E-mail: high-speed connection allowing
quick download speeds and large file
attachments.
The next generation of mobile services,
powered by 3G technology such as
Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) and
Universal Mobile Telecommunications
Service (UMTS), are driving data speeds
starting at 2 Mbps and evolving upwards
with new HSPA and EV-DO revision B,
which will support speeds of up to 14
Mbps. These higher rates will enable
dramatic improvements to the overall user
experience for multimedia applications
including mobile broadband Internet and
full-motion video with high-quality audio.

Ovum, a research firm, forecasts that
the revenue for these data services will
grow at 20% annually through 2009,
but usage will grow at 35% annually.
The OpEx and CapEx associated with
the implementation of parallel networks
for voice and data would significantly
diminish the returns from any highvalue services. The challenge for mobile
operators, therefore, is to support these
new revenue streams while at the same
time minimizing the cost to implement
and operate the network they require.
In particular, mobile operators must
be ready to implement and operate

Tellabs® 6300 Managed Transport
System have proven highly successful
in building pure Layer 1 backhaul
networks for 2G mobile. Together, they
have been installed in more than 150
mobile networks globally, performing
both 64 Kbps and E-1 traffic grooming.
These products will support migration
to 3G by expanding E-1 backhaul
capacity to support ATM/E-1 traffic
from new Node Bs. Next-generation
Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH)
capabilities can be enabled by adding
the appropriate Ethernet interfaces and
switching capabilities to support Release
5 (R5) as backhaul may take the form
of a Layer 2 Ethernet grooming network.
For future-proof packet-based RAN, the
IP/MPLS-based Tellabs® 8600 system
optimizes RAN migration from cell site
to core network. It allows operators to
cap investments to ATM-based RAN
transport while at the same time offering
full IP routing and IP-VPN support for
R5 and all-IP networks. In today’s mobile
network, the Tellabs 8600 system enables
immediate cost savings with synchronized
metro Ethernet backhauling, separating
R99 voice traffic to TDM networks and
HSPA data to DSL transport. The extensive
support of pseudowires allows operators
to deal with TDM, FR, ATM, Ethernet and
IP/MPLS with a single platform.
Offer Differentiated Services
Tellabs differentiates itself with tiered
levels of service based on QoS guarantees.
These flexibly allocated guarantees help
you ensure differentiated revenue streams
for different types of customers.

Evolution of mobile data services
The current generation of mobile services,
based on 2G network technology, has
been dominated by basic voice and
Short Messaging Services (SMS). More
traditional data services (e.g., Internet
access, Virtual Private Network (VPN)
access) on 2G networks have not proved
popular, primarily because of 2G
bandwidth constraints.
Mobile operators are increasingly
focusing on services that offer exciting
new content. These services, with
features like real-time multimedia, fullmotion video, high-fidelity audio and
real-time messaging, can drive higher
levels of profitable revenue.
Projections from research firms such as
Pyramid Research indicate that while
growth in revenue from voice services is
slowing considerably, revenue from the
next generation of data-centric services
will grow steadily to capture 32% of total
revenue by 2009.
These new services will be used as
the building blocks for new mobile
applications including:
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) services: Multimedia Messaging (MMS), Instant
Messaging (IM), video telephony,
real-time multimedia, interactive
gaming and push to talk.
Business services: video conferencing,
Wireless LAN (WLAN) and mobile
Virtual Private Networks (VPN).
Content-to-Person (C2P): high-speed
Internet access, video streaming,
ring tone applications, image and
music downloading.
E-mail: high-speed connection allowing
quick download speeds and large file
attachments.
The next generation of mobile services,
powered by 3G technology such as
Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) and
Universal Mobile Telecommunications
Service (UMTS), are driving data speeds
starting at 2 Mbps and evolving upwards
with new HSPA and EV-DO revision B,
which will support speeds of up to 14
Mbps. These higher rates will enable
dramatic improvements to the overall user
experience for multimedia applications
including mobile broadband Internet and
full-motion video with high-quality audio.

Address your most demanding
customer needs
A graphic designer in Tokyo finds her
way to a client meeting using the Internetbased map service on her mobile phone.
A salesman traveling in Helsinki video
conferences with his wife back home in
Hong Kong. A college graduate watches
her favorite TV show on her mobile phone
while on a train through Europe. Today’s
third-generation mobile communication
technology puts all the power of a
broadband Internet connection in the
palm of your hand, anywhere, anytime.
More than one-third of the world’s wireless
calls are made on mobile networks owned
by Tellabs customers.
www.tellabs.com/solutions/integratedmobile/
Mobile providers are finding that the
killer application for mobile services
is mobility itself — the ability to use
advanced wired applications and services
anywhere, anytime, with the personalization that Echo Boomers demand.
Mobile trends suggest a rapid migration
from basic data services like e-mail and
audio downloads to much more delaysensitive, data-rich applications like
video telephony and video conferencing.
This will lead to technology and price
pressure in each portion of the network.
Challenges for mobile operators
The pace of change in the mobile
market is relentless. In order to compete
for subscribers in a market that is near
full saturation, mobile operators must
implement technology that will enable
exciting new, high-value services.
Operators all over the world face the
prospect of having to migrate their Radio
Access Networks (RAN) and backhaul
networks to support advanced 3G
services while continuing to support
their existing 2G services.
These challenges represent the primary
concern among today’s mobile operator
executives. Fortunately, there are
technologies that deal with these
challenges; technologies that will enable
the mobile operator to overcome the
commoditization trend while reducing the
OpEx and CapEx burdens that threaten
their financial health.
This is the key challenge for all mobile
operators and is comprised of several
sub-challenges, including:
Maintaining or reducing Operational
and Capital Expenditures (OpEx and
CapEx) while adding new services
Increasing overall service quality
Increasing revenue through alternative
products and services that offer access
to exciting new content
Supporting the bandwidth flexibility
needed to meet the exponential
demands of High-Speed Packet Access
(HSPA) services
