Address your most demanding customer needs A graphic designer in Tokyo finds her way to a client meeting using the Internetbased map service on her mobile phone. A salesman traveling in Helsinki video conferences with his wife back home in Hong Kong. A college graduate watches her favorite TV show on her mobile phone while on a train through Europe. Today’s third-generation mobile communication technology puts all the power of a broadband Internet connection in the palm of your hand, anywhere, anytime. More than one-third of the world’s wireless calls are made on mobile networks owned by Tellabs customers. www.tellabs.com/solutions/integratedmobile/ Mobile providers are finding that the killer application for mobile services is mobility itself — the ability to use advanced wired applications and services anywhere, anytime, with the personalization that Echo Boomers demand. Mobile trends suggest a rapid migration from basic data services like e-mail and audio downloads to much more delaysensitive, data-rich applications like video telephony and video conferencing. This will lead to technology and price pressure in each portion of the network. Challenges for mobile operators The pace of change in the mobile market is relentless. In order to compete for subscribers in a market that is near full saturation, mobile operators must implement technology that will enable exciting new, high-value services. Operators all over the world face the prospect of having to migrate their Radio Access Networks (RAN) and backhaul networks to support advanced 3G services while continuing to support their existing 2G services. These challenges represent the primary concern among today’s mobile operator executives. Fortunately, there are technologies that deal with these challenges; technologies that will enable the mobile operator to overcome the commoditization trend while reducing the OpEx and CapEx burdens that threaten their financial health. This is the key challenge for all mobile operators and is comprised of several sub-challenges, including: Maintaining or reducing Operational and Capital Expenditures (OpEx and CapEx) while adding new services Increasing overall service quality Increasing revenue through alternative products and services that offer access to exciting new content Supporting the bandwidth flexibility needed to meet the exponential demands of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) services www.tellabs.com/solutions/integratedmobile/ 3 integratedMoble r9_r1.indd, Spread 4 of 6 - Pages (4, 9) 11/30/06 3:40 PM Tellabs® IntegratedMobile SM Solution Tellabs® IntegratedMobile SM Solution Higher mobile data rates will enable dramatic improvements to the overall user experience for multimedia applications. Evolution of mobile data services The current generation of mobile services, based on 2G network technology, has been dominated by basic voice and Short Messaging Services (SMS). More traditional data services (e.g., Internet access, Virtual Private Network (VPN) access) on 2G networks have not proved popular, primarily because of 2G bandwidth constraints. Mobile operators are increasingly focusing on services that offer exciting new content. These services, with features like real-time multimedia, fullmotion video, high-fidelity audio and real-time messaging, can drive higher levels of profitable revenue. Projections from research firms such as Pyramid Research indicate that while growth in revenue from voice services is slowing considerably, revenue from the next generation of data-centric services will grow steadily to capture 32% of total revenue by 2009. These new services will be used as the building blocks for new mobile applications including: Peer-to-Peer (P2P) services: Multimedia Messaging (MMS), Instant Messaging (IM), video telephony, real-time multimedia, interactive gaming and push to talk. Business services: video conferencing, Wireless LAN (WLAN) and mobile Virtual Private Networks (VPN). Content-to-Person (C2P): high-speed Internet access, video streaming, ring tone applications, image and music downloading. E-mail: high-speed connection allowing quick download speeds and large file attachments. The next generation of mobile services, powered by 3G technology such as Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS), are driving data speeds starting at 2 Mbps and evolving upwards with new HSPA and EV-DO revision B, which will support speeds of up to 14 Mbps. These higher rates will enable dramatic improvements to the overall user experience for multimedia applications including mobile broadband Internet and full-motion video with high-quality audio. www.tellabs.com/solutions/integratedmobile/ 5 integratedMoble r9_r1.indd, Spread 6 of 6 - Pages (6, 7) 11/30/06 3:40 PM 6 Tellabs® IntegratedMobile SM Solution Tellabs® IntegratedMobile SM Solution Radio Access Network Mobile Core T-1 Environment OEM cell-site aggregator OEM cell-site aggregator LEC/SONET Ring 5500 8600 Metro Ethernet, Fiber, SONET, MPLS, IP/VPN 8600 PSTN 8600 8800 8800 IP/MPLS E-1 Environment Metro Ethernet, Fiber, SDH, MPLS, IP/VPN 8600 8600 8600 Internet 8800 IMS 8600 8100 6300 The Tellabs® IntegratedMobileSM solution advances your mobile network Evolution of the mobile network Ovum, a research firm, forecasts that the revenue for these data services will grow at 20% annually through 2009, but usage will grow at 35% annually. The OpEx and CapEx associated with the implementation of parallel networks for voice and data would significantly diminish the returns from any highvalue services. The challenge for mobile operators, therefore, is to support these new revenue streams while at the same time minimizing the cost to implement and operate the network they require. In particular, mobile operators must be ready to implement and operate a single converged network — one capable of transporting all revenuebearing services, voice and data alike, particularly in the RAN where the www.tellabs.com/solutions/integratedmobile/ problem is most acute. This challenge is mainly present in the following: 2G services, especially voice, will continue to provide the majority of mobile revenue and profits for the next several years. 3G services are ramping up steadily but will coexist with 2G on the same infrastructure. 3G brings with it a mix of technologies (ATM, Ethernet, IP) that will also need to coexist along with 2G TDM. New services from 3G require both increased bandwidth as well as QoS that supports their varying performance requirements. Beyond the RAN, mobile operator networks must evolve to incorporate alternative technologies that provide additional long-term opportunities. These technologies may comprise applications, network transport, access methods or signaling functions, any of which may need to be isolated from other technologies in the network. To prepare for this, the Metro Ethernet, NG-SDH, MPLS, Ethernet-over-SDH 6300 Network Management System industry has collaborated on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), an architectural framework that supports flexible, standards-based connectivity across well-defined system interfaces. both wireless and wireline services will significantly lower network CapEx and minimize the network operations-related costs by eliminating parallel networks. today’s environment. This enables you to leverage your existing infrastructure and evolve your network from circuit to packet in a flexible and efficient manner. At the same time, operators are struggling with the increasing cost of transmission in the RAN. While the launch of HSPA and EV-DO generates new revenue, they also add significant costs as transport capacity requirements grow exponentially. The need to lower the RAN-related backhaul costs and coexistence of multiple technologies force operators to search for new and innovative methods for efficient mobile transport. In a fully evolved mobile network, all services are transported across the RAN and core network using IP/MPLS. In addition to 2G and 3G services, transport networks will also carry traffic from other wireless technologies like Wi-Fi and WiMAX. Additionally, this network will support true convergence by aggregating wireline traffic from Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAM) and provide support for additional applications like IP Television (IPTV). As part of the pressure to reduce costs, operators have started to evaluate possibilities of leveraging 3G backhaul for other purposes. Both convergence in the core network coinciding with the growth of applications like IMS and convergence in the backhaul network can offer significant efficiencies for carriers. A single platform that supports Faster rollout of differentiated 3G services The Tellabs IntegratedMobile solution is based on a converged MPLS design that supports protocols in 2G and 3G and beyond. This solution is optimal for migration to future service offerings while leveraging the multiservice capabilities necessary to operate in The Tellabs IntegratedMobile solution helps you provision and deploy services faster and easier — minimizing the time required to roll out differentiated mobile services. The Tellabs IntegratedMobile solution also provides dynamic bandwidth allocation, providing bandwidth where it is needed to prevent bottlenecks and eliminate the need for any additional installation work as your network grows. This is critical and minimizes or negates incremental costs and delays while significantly expanding the revenue potential associated with turning up new services. As these networks grow and change, software upgrades and service provisioning will occur regularly and wireless operators will need management tools to quickly and easily make modifications. This is the key challenge for all mobile operators and is comprised of several sub-challenges, including: Maintaining or reducing Operational and Capital Expenditures (OpEx and CapEx) while adding new services Increasing overall service quality Increasing revenue through alternative products and services that offer access to exciting new content Supporting the bandwidth flexibility needed to meet the exponential demands of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) services www.tellabs.com/solutions/integratedmobile/ 3 integratedMoble r9_r1.indd, Spread 2 of 6 - Pages (2, 11) 11/30/06 3:40 PM 2 Tellabs® IntegratedMobile SM Solution Tellabs® IntegratedMobile SM Solution Tellabs advances your networks Tellabs helps you seamlessly advance your network into the future We draw on deep industry expertise to create long-term solutions.
