Our Summer Program was a Success!
The first summer program sponsored by The Arc of Grosse Pointe – Harper
Woods was a huge success!
A total of 29 children participated, and learned about the cultures of other
countries, danced with CC Plus, swam, bowled and had a lot of fun. Field trips to the
Zoo, Hillberry Theater, a fishing Derby, bowling and the splash pad were some of the
highlights. We were treated to visits from a magician, Farmer John, exotic animals,
and a ride in a sidecar with the folks from Wolverine Harley Davidson. Donny, from
Lou’s pet shop treated us to a tour of his store, and the chance to pet some of the
exotic animals there. We made a pancake lunch, fruit smoothies and ice cream. We
worked with sand, paint, crayons and beads to make unique craft projects. Each day
began with group time, where we worked on our communication skills, talking about we
did the day before and what we looked forward to. Music, movies, exercise and games
filled in our days.
We partnered with The Grosse Pointe Theatre Youth on Stage Program, and put
on our own version of “The Lost Treasure of Forgotten”, by Dave Kilgore. Sharron
Nelson directed, and members of the theater group lent their talents to our production.
Performing on stage gives the children such a boost. They made great strides in their
speech and language skills, as well as their ability to follow directions and work
together. It was a big undertaking, but everyone did a great job!
To quote one mother, “Thank you for taking such good care of my child. The kids
did a lot of awesome activities and enjoyed some wonderful field trips, it was a truly
priceless experience!” From another parent, “Camp was such a huge blessing this
summer!”

MEMBERSHIP IS IMPORTANT
The Arc serves 1.4 million individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
(I/DD) and their families across the country.
Doesn’t everyone have the right to be respected? Be valued? Be Included?
Participate?
More than 7 million Americans live with intellectual disability, Down syndrome, Autism
or one of the 100+ other diagnosis that affect their ability to function independently.
They are young and old, all races and backgrounds. They have families, friends and
others who care about them. And, they have goals and aspirations just like you and I.
We know you would want to help protect their basic rights to equal opportunities if you
had the chance.
Become a member of The Arc today. The Arc promotes and protects the rights of
people with I/DD to live, learn, work and play in their communities as valued members
of society. We advocate to end institutionalization, offer opportunities for education
and employment and ensure services and supports are there so people with I/DD can
live just like everyone else.
The Arc Grosse Pointe-Harper Woods is working to meet the needs of his community.
A recent survey done by the Arc indicated work and job training as the number 1
concern of parent of adult age individuals, and social activities as the 2nd. We are
working with the Arc Macomb and Community Living Services so that we can provide
assistance and job coaching in that area. Our FRIENDS Group provides social and
recreational activities. For parents of school aged children, after school activities was
the most requested service, and we have developed a program to meet that need.
But we need your support to continue all of these services, your membership, and tax
deductible donations will directly impact the lives of individuals with I/DD in our
community! Please join us!
