friends gather on the steps of City
Hall on Tuesday evening, Nov. 25,
to light the way and welcome Santa
as he arrives in Grosse Pointe Woods
on a fire truck with an official Public
Safety escort.
After a brief welcome from the Mayor
and presentation of the key to the city,
everyone is invited into the Community
Center for cookies, hot beverages and
holiday songs. Be sure to bring your
camera to capture your family’s visit
with Santa Claus.

MCL 168.764c requires jurisdictions to use a ballot
tracker program to track absentee ballot activity for all
elections. Through the Michigan Voter Information Center
(MVIC), voters may check the status of their absent voter
application and ballot, as well as view their precinct specific
ballot, polling location, and map to the polling place.

Projects completed in 2014 include:
Holiday rubbish collection schedule
The Mayor, City Council and Administration of the City
of Grosse Pointe Woods would like to thank our residents
for your patience during the construction projects that were
underway this year.
• Joint sealing in District 2 (Vernier to north city limits
between Marter and Wedgewood)
• Miscellaneous concrete pavement repairs throughout
the city
• State of Michigan Sewer Revolving Fund (SRF) sewer
repairs and rehabilitation throughout the city. Two
phases of the three-phase SRF project were completed.
• 2014 MDOT (Michigan Department of Transportation)
pavement repair project on Marter Rd., resurfacing
(Vernier Rd. to north city limit), Morningside Dr.
resurfacing (south of Renaud to Lochmoor), and
Vernier Rd. concrete repairs (Charlevoix to Fairway) to
be completed mid-November.
Curbside chipping of Christmas trees begins Friday, Dec. 26
and continues through Friday, Jan. 16 on regularly scheduled
rubbish pickup days. All lights, ornaments and stands must be
removed before placing trees at the curb.
Veteran’s Day – Tuesday, Nov. 11 – City offices closed;
rubbish pickup on schedule.
Thanksgiving – Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27 and 28
– City offices closed; Thursday rubbish pickup on Friday, Nov.
28; Friday rubbish pickup on Saturday, Nov. 29.
Christmas and New Year weeks – Wednesday, Dec. 24,
Thursday, Dec. 25; Wednesday Dec. 31, Thursday, Jan. 1
– City offices closed; all rubbish picked up on schedule on
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each week; no pickup on
Thursday of each week. For both weeks, the Thursday rubbish
pickup will be on Friday, and Friday pickup on Saturday.
It’s snow time
Yard waste pick-up suspended Dec. 19
During snowy winter weather, the DPW crew is on call around
the clock. When snow begins to pile up crews set out to plow
and salt. Major streets and around schools are cleared first,
with crews moving to residential streets as quickly as possible.
Due to the limited amount of composting during the winter
months, there is no curbside pick up of yard waste scheduled
from Dec. 19, 2014, through March 20, 2015.
City ordinance Section 38-183 states: “No person shall
deposit or cause to be deposited snow, ice or slush on
any roadway or alley.” Unfortunately, the DPW cannot
avoid snow being pushed onto driveway approaches when
they plow the streets. When clearing your own driveway
and approach, place the snow on either side of the driveway
or approach. As a courtesy to our neighbors and in order to
avoid a citation, all residents are requested to comply with the
ordinance by not shoveling or blowing snow into the street
before or after the city has plowed.
Curbside vacuuming of leaves ends on your regularly scheduled
leaf collection day during the week of Dec. 1. After that date,
leaves must be placed in brown paper yard waste bags.
To dispose of yard waste after Dec. 19, bring your brown
paper yard waste bags to the DPW yard. Be sure to stop in the
office to show proof of residence before entering the yard.
Fall tree trimming schedule
As part of the city’s rotating eight-year maintenance program,
one area of the city is designated for tree trimming each year.
City trees in District 5 (West of Mack between City Hall
and south city limits) are scheduled for trimming. Work will
begin in late fall and be completed in the winter. Trained
crews remove dead wood, trim any branches lower than six
feet from the sidewalk and thin the branches to allow better
penetration of light and air. They also inspect the trees for any
problems.
The DPW recommends having private trees in need of
trimming done in the winter. Contact the DPW for a list of
licensed tree contractors.
Residents are also advised to move their cars off the street
when snow is falling to allow for more effective and efficient
snow removal.
After streets and school crossings are cleared, sidewalks
are plowed, providing two or more inches of snow has
accumulated and the ground is frozen to a depth of four or
more inches. If the ground is not solidly frozen, snow removal
equipment is more likely to damage lawns.
Snow removal is a big job and the DPW uses all available
crews to complete the work as quickly as possible.

Fun, food & games at WinterFest 2015 ● Jan. 31
Highlights include the exciting Score-O
contest for kids, a giant inflatable slide
and – Mother Nature permitting – ice
skating. Our hometown’s own creative
cooks are invited to compete for the
prestigious ladle and spatula trophies
in the Chili Cook-off and Cookie
Challenge. Chili and Cookie contestants
should arrive by 10:30 for judging at
10:45 a.m.
The Citizen’s Recreation Commission invites
everyone to the annual Grosse Pointe Woods
Winterfest Saturday, Jan. 31. The focus is on
family fun with food and friendly competition for
all ages, from noon to 2 p.m. at Lake Front Park.

Beautification Commission
Each year the Beautification Advisory Commission
assists with the purchase of holiday greens that
decorate city buildings and Mack Avenue. Funds
are raised at the annual flower sale and from travel
mug and tile sales. You can fill someone’s stocking
and also help beautify the city by purchasing Grosse
Pointe Woods logo mugs and tiles. They make great
gifts for friends, family, and teachers.
Started in 1988, the series of
Commemorative Tiles includes
line drawings of significant
Grosse Pointe Woods buildings,
monuments, churches, and schools,
along with the city seal and a
special holiday tile. Each ceramic
tile is 6 inches square, cream
colored, with a cork back and a
hanging loop. The design is printed
with fired-on brown glaze, except
for the holiday tile which is printed
in green with a touch of red. The 2014 tile depicts
Assumption Greek Orthodox Church & Cultural
Center. A flier showing the entire series is available at
the Community Center. The tiles are $12 each.
The stainless steel mugs are imprinted in green with
a stylized city seal and “Grosse Pointe Woods,
Michigan” on opposite sides. The mugs sell for $10.
The commemorative tiles and mugs can be purchased
at the Community Center.
Winterfest is free of charge, but please
register before Jan. 23 online or by
calling 343-2408. Indicate if you are
planning to enter either the Chili Cookoff or Cookie Challenge competition.

Tree Commission
Woods named ‘Tree City’ for 36th year
The Community Tree Commission
presented its 2013 Tree City flag at a
recent meeting of the City
Council. This is the 36th
consecutive year that Grosse
Pointe Woods has received
the prestigious designation
– only one year behind the
most-awarded Michigan city.
To qualify as a Tree City
USA community, a town or
city must have a tree board
or department; a tree-care ordinance; a
community forestry program with an
annual budget of at least $2 per capita,
and an Arbor Day observance and
proclamation.
Grosse Pointe Woods has been an area
leader in conservation, revitalization
and management of our urban forest.
Celebrating Arbor Day, the Community
Tree Commission visits area elementary
schools each year to teach children
about the importance of trees in
our environment, and provides the
students with a seedling and planting
instructions. Along with the Department
of Public Works, they also encourage
the planting of new, city-appropriate
trees through the ongoing Memorial
Tree Program.

conservation and the environment
are an important part of life in
the community. Pride in public
trees also leads to more engaged
residents and better care for new
and existing trees on private
property, all adding to the value of

live on for decades. For $280, you are

planted, an engraved granite marker is

From Memorial Day to
Labor Day, more than
84,114 residents and their
guests came through the park gates.
The Learn to Swim program instructed 662 children, and 196
children and adults registered for tennis lessons. The Woods Warriors
swim team included 177 competitors, age 6 to 17, and 35 talented
swimmers delighted the audience at the July Synchronized
Swim Show.

A record number of people, close to 250, turned out for the
annual Labor Day Bridge Walk and dedication of the BurkeFossee Fitness Trail at Lake Front Park.
After two laps of the park,

event is one of many held
throughout Michigan to
encourage a healthier, more
physically active lifestyle.

THE POLAR EXPRESS

The Polar Express will be making stops in
Grosse Pointe Woods, beginning Dec. 11.
But you can’t board if you don’t have a ticket in your hand.
Grosse Pointe Woods residents and their guests are invited
to take a ride on the GPW Express Line’s exclusive holiday
route – The Polar Express.
Children and adults alike delight in this magical ride.
The train (a heated Lake Front Park bus) leaves from the
Community Center for a 20-minute tour of lighted houses
throughout the Grosse Pointes, accompanied by a reading of
The Polar Express story. Children are encouraged to wear
pajamas to recreate the setting for the holiday story.

Laurie, Abaigeal, Ian and Richard –
enjoyed a beautiful day at the annual
Bridge Walk.
Arriving at the North Pole, travelers are treated to hot cocoa
and other holiday refreshments. Boys and girls on the “Nice”
list also enjoy a visit from Mr. Claus himself and receive a
sleigh bell to represent the first gift of Christmas.
Reservations for specific dates and times are required for this
event. Registration forms are available starting Nov. 3 at the
Community Center and at www.gpwmi.us. Payment must be
made in full at time of registration. The fare is $4 per person.

adventure movie follows Emmet, who is on an epic quest to
stop an evil tyrant from gluing the universe together, a journey
for which he is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.
There is a $4 fee per person, and advance registration is
required since spaces fill quickly. Stop by the Community
Center to secure your seats from Jan. 7 to Feb. 1.

Classes at the Community Center

All classes are held in the Community Center, adjacent to City Hall, 20025 Mack Plaza.
A “Membership Pass” can be used for any class. This pass
allows participants to pay in advance at a discounted rate.
Each time the user attends class, the card is scanned, and
one class is “deducted” from the card. When the prepaid
classes are used up, the participant can then purchase
additional credits. In order to receive the discounted
membership rate, at least six class credits must be

reservations before the registration deadline. If reservations are cancelled after the
registration deadline, a portion of the trip fee may be reimbursed as determined on
a case-by-case basis.
Ride with PAATS
Call PAATS – Pointe Area Assisted Transportation Service – at 343-2580 between
7 a.m. and 1 p.m. for low- cost transportation to Grosse Pointe Woods senior
activities. The fare per one-way trip within the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods is
$3; $4 and $5 to other areas. SMART bus tickets are no longer accepted by PAATS,
only on the SMART Connector and fixed routes.

knitting group. No membership is required,

Plan your next event
at the Community Center
The Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center is the perfect
place to host that important meeting or festive family
occasion. Rent the Park Room (capacity 80), Garden Room
(capacity 50), or Lake Room (capacity 20), or combine all
three for larger events. The historic Cook Schoolhouse also
can be rented for groups of up to 50 people.
Rental prices are for five-hour blocks of time, including
set-up and clean-up; renting for additional hours is possible.
Tables, chairs and set-up are included in the price of the
rental. Optional items include use of coffee urns, linen table
covers and a projection screen. Use of the Community Center
kitchen is available for an additional fee when the Park Room
is reserved. Alcohol can be served providing the application to
do so has been approved by the Public Safety department and
a $50 permit is obtained in advance.
