Bastille Day was celebrated by the Francophone and Francophile community at The
Village Club in Bloomfield Hills. Because of inclement weather, the party was moved
indoors instead of being in the lovely gardens. The crowd enjoyed appetizers and lots
of champagne, viewed a re-broadcast of the activities in Paris from a few hours earlier
where the 100th anniversary of World War I was also observed, and sang the national
anthems of France and the USA. A pianist provided background music throughout the
evening.
Of course, Pascal Goachet, Honorary French Consul in Detroit, presented interesting
and humorous anecdotes about Bastille Day. Then, on behalf of the French government, he presented the decoration of “Chevalier dans l’Ordre du Mérite” to our member, Robert Weyhing, in recognition of his 15 years of service as Honorary French
Consul in Detroit. Congratulations Robert!
We want to give special thanks to all those who served on the committee and worked
hard to present a “perfect event.”

As we enter summer, we are also planning next year’s programs at the Alliance Française de Grosse Pointe. Our traditional Champagne Opener will be held on August
22. We are setting up a wine tasting series, with dates yet to be determined. Michael
Ferrell will present a lecture in the fall and we will co-sponsor an art lecture with the
DIA in November. We have lots of different programs in the works but not yet confirmed. We expect to publish a calendar for the 2014-2015 season in August.
The dates for the Cercle Littéraire are set with the books to be discussed. We are going to change venues and frequency of our Ciné-Club beginning in October.
We are excited to see next year shaping up and hope you will join us for the 20142015 season!
