Review of the Australian Curriculum
You may like to read a letter which the College received from the Australian Government, outlining
the findings of the review of the Australian Curriculum.

The Class of 2014
This week we farewell the Class of 2014 in a formal way. They had a final assembly with the
College students on Wednesday and then they will have their Graduation Ceremony with the
College Community and parents on Friday.
They are quite a unique group, as they have always been called the “half group”. That is, they are
smaller in number than usual, due to the change in school starting age fourteen years ago.
Perhaps this has made them a much more close-knit group, as they have had the opportunity to
get to know each other really well.
We wish them well in their future life choices, particularly, their studies and the exams, which some
of them are about to sit.
I would like to finish with part of the reading from Sunday’s scripture, where St Paul addresses a
small group of Christians, in a Greek village called Thessalonika.
“We always mention you in our prayers and thank God for you all
and constantly remember before God our Father
how you have shown your faith in action,
worked for love and persevered through hope,
in Our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Grooming Procedures
We’d like parents/guardians to be aware of some new approaches to our
grooming and dress-code. There are no changes to the published dresscode as outlined in the Student Diary. In our efforts to constantly improve
the standards of adherence to the code, we are implementing some new
strategies. Students are reminded that any staff member (teacher or nonteaching staff) may and should challenge students about uniform and
grooming problems.
If a student presents at school with a Uniform/grooming problem, one of the
following will occur:
1. Immediate correction (eg – remove/confiscate jewellery or non-uniform
garment);
2. The Head of Year will set a date by which the problem will be rectified (eg
hair-cut, new shoes);
3. The Head of Year will send the student home at the end of the day with a
letter instructing that the student is not to return to school until the situation is
remedied.

Being sent home in this context is not a suspension as such, and hence no
re-enrolment interview will be required. For instances of hair-cuts being too
short, a period of time (probably a week) will be stipulated by the Head of Year
where the student will not be able to return to classes.

This practice is aligned with what is already stated in the Student Diary. If you
have any queries, please do not hesitate to call me at the College.

Elite Sport Training Squads
This is to clarify for students and parents that students who are selected for
any elite sporting training squad may not depart early from school on a regular
basis, in order to attend training sessions. The College is happy to clarify this
with any team or coach, and has made such contact recently to Rugby WA.

Computing requirements for 2015
With the rollout to personal electronic devices for Years 7 to 10 next year, I have been asked by some families for
suggestions on what to purchase. To make this process easier for those families, I have been speaking to a company
called PRA solutions. This is a third party that has, with the specifications given by Aranmore Catholic College,
Sourced suitable devices which they are able to supply at educational prices.
It must be stressed that it is not compulsory to purchase through this company, but is given as an option.
The company does have the facility to allow leasing as well as outright purchases.

As we lead in to summer and the weather starts heating up we should reconsider how we protect ourselves when out
in the sun. It is also important to understand the philosophy behind the College’s “No Hat, No Play” policy.
A 2002 survey found that approximately two in every three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the
age of 70 and it is estimated that every eight hours someone dies of skin cancer in Australia.
In Australia, sunburn can occur in as little as 10 minutes on a fine summers day. Sunburn at any age, whether serious
or mild, can cause permanent skin damage.
Sunburn is a major risk factor for developing melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is more
likely to occur in people who are exposed to the sun every now and then (eg. on weekends or holidays, especially if
they get sunburnt), not a little bit everyday.
So how is the College approaching this issue? Students are required to purchase a hat and wear it any time that they
are out in the sun. Those students who do not have a hat will be asked to move into shaded areas at recess and
lunchtime. In PE students will also be offered sunscreen.

Congratulations to the following students who have been selected in the RugbyWA Junior Gold Squad. The program
runs from October to March 2015, players train 4 times a week including weight sessions, skill sessions and life skills
seminars. The program is designed to prepare players for The JGS Rugby tournament in February and for future
RugbyWA squads. Aranmore has a very high representation which is a great promotion and example for the College
and Rugby Program.

Congratulations must also go to Ex College and Rugby students for their recent successes
Kane Koteka has taken up a contract with the Western Force.
Chance Peni represented the Junior Kiwis in the recent Rugby League International
between New Zealand and Australia and he scored a great try. He has also taken up a
contract with the West Tigers NRL team for the 2015 season.
Curtis Rona has taken up a NRL contract with the Canterbury Bulldogs.
