He received his PhD from Syracuse University in 2008 and completed postdoctoral training at Haskins Laboratories, an affiliate of Yale University. He is an Assistant Professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at Syracuse University and currently has a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study biofeedback treatments for children with persisting speech sound errors, including those with CAS. Course Outline: The course will provide an overview of treatment approaches for preschool and school-age children with childhood apraxia of speech, with a focus on research from the past 10 years. Emphasis will be placed on motor learning principles, and examples of treatment programs that implement these principles will be presented. Agenda: 4:30-5:00: Defining Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Core features, assessment considerations 5:00-5:25: Target Selection 5:15-5:45: Acquisition/Performance (Stimulability, Chaining, Core Vocabulary) 5:45-6:00: Introducing Principles of Motor Learning 6:00-6:15: Break 6:15-6:45: Principles of Motor Learning (Feedback and Practice) 6:45-7:10: Integral Stimulation/Dynamic Temporal & Tactile Cueing 7:10-7:35: Current Research on Ultrasound Biofeedback and Challenge Point 7:35-7:45: Question/Answer Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1. Differentiate between motor learning and performance 2. Describe two practice and two feedback factors that facilitate motor learning 3. Explain how motor learning principles are implemented within Dynamic Temporal and Tactile cueing 4. Explain advantages and disadvantages of ultrasound biofeedback for treating CAS This seminar is being offered for .3 CEUs, Professional area and Intermediate instructional level.
