NYSATA would like to congratulate Scott Sailor, EdD, ATC,
newly elected NATA president. Scott will take office from Jim
Thornton, MA, ATC, at the June 2015 NATA Clinical Symposia
& AT Expo. Jim, the first NATA President from District 2, has
been an excellent leader and represented our profession well.
We welcome two new Region Representatives: Nicole Hovey,
MS, ATC – Region 1 NYC and James Pierre-Glaude, DPT,
ATC, CSCS – Region 1 Long Island. Both have been eager
to start, and we welcome their new energy and involvement
in NYSATA. There was a bit of a delay as we waited for an
updated list with the new split to the region, and we thank you for your patience
during the transition!
NYSATA would like to thank Koki Takano, ATC, as he steps down from the NYSATA
Ethnic Diversity chair. Koki is returning to Japan, and while we are disappointed
he will be leaving us, we understand how important this move is to him and his
family. We are actively looking for a new chair of this committee; if you are
interested, please contact me before November 7th.
In the upcoming state elections, there are several key legislators who have been
very supportive of NYSATA running for re-election, as well as many open seats.
We will closely watch the results of these elections and encourage you to vote

this week. Once the legislators are secure in their
appointments, I encourage everyone to continue
their efforts by writing letters to your legislators
and arranging visits to your athletic training rooms.
There may be a number of new legislators (we know
that at least 13 seats are open) who will need to
learn about athletic trainers and this is our chance.
A new legislative session begins in January, but there
is no need to wait!
The EATA conference in Philadelphia (January
9-12, 2015) is fast approaching. The EATA program
committee has done an excellent job obtaining
EBP CEUs – 4 from the General Session and 2
more in a Friday afternoon workshop. NYSATA will
hold a meeting on Saturday from 4-5pm in the
Commonwealth D. Please make plans to join us.
The NYSATA conference will be held July 10-12, 2015
at the Langone Medical Center in Manhattan. Bob
O’Malley, NSYATA President-Elect and Conference
chair, has been working hard to finalize the program,
and it shaping up to be an excellent conference.
David Byrnes, NYSATA Treasurer, continues to work
with our financial advisor, Lisa Quadrini from UBS,
and NYSATA is in a sound financial state. David also
launched a very successful Twitter campaign during
our 2nd NYSATA Athletic Training Recognition Week.
NYSATA’s #WhosYourAT went viral, and was picked
up across the US.
As we look to our future, I would like to encourage
everyone to obtain his or her National Provider
Identification (NPI) number.
Legislators search
for the number of NPI providers for regulatory
decisions. This takes only a few minutes, and does
not cost anything. See the NATA website for more
information.
NYSATA is always looking for involvement from our
membership. If you would like to take an active role,
contact the chair of a committee in which you have
interest. If you would like more direction and are
open to suggestions, please contact me. With our
new legislative session beginning in January, we can
always use help.
Please always feel free to contact me with any
questions or concerns you may have.
Have a great fall, and see you in Philly!

NYSATA
Governmental Affairs Report
Christine Jenkins, MS, ATC - Chair
Hi everyone! The Governmental
Affairs committee continues to
work hard on the update of our
Practice Act. Here are the updates:
The legislative session will start
again in Albany in January of
2015 and run until June 2015.
Each new session, bills have to be
re-introduced, which is what we
plan to do. Our Assembly sponsor (Charles Lavine
D-Long Island) is still carrying our bill and will be reintroducing it again into the Assembly. Our Senate
sponsor, however, (Mark Grisanti R-Buffalo) did not
win his primary earlier this fall. He is running as an
Independent for the November election, but we are
not guaranteed that he will win. In that case, we'll
have to find a new Senate sponsor to introduce our
bill.
In the meantime, we continue to work behind the
scenes to meet, and educate legislators, and their
staff. This includes meetings in Albany, as well as
Athletic Training Room visits that have taken place
in Albany, and throughout the State. We are also
continuing our discussions with the NY Physical
Therapists Association (which, for the most part
have been productive). Once the 2015 session
starts in January, we'll be working more directly
with legislators to introduce the bills again and lobby
further for them.
What can our members do? You can continue to write
letters to your home legislators right now. Feel free
to contact me for a template letter you can use
- one letter to your Assembly member and one to
your Senator. If you don’t know who your legislators
are, you can easily find them by typing in your home
address on the NY State Assembly and Senate
websites.
After the November elections some of the legislators
may change, so you should re-check the websites
to see if you have new legislators, and if so, send
new letters to them. Lastly, we encourage all our
members to contact their home legislators and invite
them to come for a visit to your Athletic Training
Room. This is the BEST way for them to see up close
and personal what we do for a living.
In other news, after another lengthy grant
application process, NYSATA was awarded another
NATA Governmental Affairs Grant. This money goes
a long way towards helping to pay for our lobbying
P3
fees, travel, and all other costs associated with this
process.
Lastly, it’s never too early to start thinking about
lobby day. Our annual pilgrimage to Albany will take
place again in May of 2015. Stay tuned for more
details. Or, feel free to contact me directly!

The NYSATA Fundraising Committee
will conduct a shirt sale prior to
and following our State meeting in
Philadelphia on Saturday January
10, 2015. The shirts will showcase
the new NYSATA logo.
In addition, I am in the process of
developing the NYSATA online store
where NYSATA branded items will
be made available for purchase. I
would like to take suggestions from the membership
on items they would be interested in purchasing or
that may be popular to the masses. Suggestions can
be made through our regional representatives. I
plan on having the online store ready for launch at
the January meeting as well.

New York Athletic Training
Recognition Week
The 2nd annual New York
Athletic Training Recognition
Week was held this fall from
Friday, October 17 to Sunday,
October 26, 2014.
With
the addition of the Twitter,
#Who’sYourAT Initiative, AT
Recognition Week 2014 gained
great visibility across NYS and
even nationwide! Dave Byrnes,
who had the vision of this great idea (#Who’sYourAT),
was able to bring it to fruition. Secondary schools
from [nearly] every NYSPHSAA Section, as well as a
variety of colleges, participated by tweeting positive
messages about and “thank-yous” to their athletic
trainers. We even had others around the country
tweeting and were mentioned in the Athletic
Training Weekly write-up that week (scroll all
the way down to 'Make the Call: #Who'sYourAT
Contest set to go Viral'!).
Thanks to all of our NYSATA committee chairs and
members who have reached out to help promote this
event! Please remember to submit your school’s
participation (with recognition other than Twitter) to
NYSATA PR or fill out this survey.

NYSATA Outreach
NYSATA
PR
is
proud
to announce our new
Outreach Coordinator cochairs Sue Dow (Excelsior
Ortho, Buffalo) and Katie Hackenbach (USMA West
Point PE dept.). They have been on task for the past
P4
few weeks and are already making their mark. A new
outreach opportunity is on the horizon for this fall,
as we will be hosting our exhibit booth at the NYS
Association of School Nurses (NYSASN) conference
on November 8th in Rochester.
We are in the process of updating and recreating our
print materials and our exhibit booth display, and we
need your help. We are looking for a variety of good
quality photos to use in new printed color displays,
depicting ATs positively and professionally in a variety
of roles and domains. If you have any photos that we
can use, please send them to me.
Press Releases (PRWeb)
NYSATA will be renewing their annual contract with
PRWeb for another year of press releases. With new
AT bills to be introduced in the NYS legislature in
January, 2015, we feel as though this is a great
avenue for PR and positive exposure. If anyone has
a lead on a story, and/or would like to offer your skills
and join our writing group please contact NYSATA
PR.
LOOKING FOR A WAY TO GET INVOLVED?
With the significant expansion of our outreach and PR
efforts over the past few years, the Public Relations
Committee is on the lookout for enthusiastic,
creative, and collaborative members to join our
expanding PR team. We can work together to find
something that best fits your strengths, interests,
and time availability. Some initiatives are on-going,
others seasonal, and the workload can ebb and flow,
so don’t be afraid to inquire if you have wanted a
way to get involved in professional service.
In addition to adding writers and assistance with press
releases and PRWeb, we are also hoping to expand
into subcommittees for NATM and AT Recognition
Week (ideas, contest guidelines, monitoring events,
promotion, etc.).
As always, if you have a lead on a story or event
going on in your area, a story involving an AT that
would bring positive awareness to our value, and/or
other topics for consideration, please contact us or
forward us the event/article link!

NYSATA was so pleased to honor
Andy Smith, MS, ATC, in May
with his Hall of Fame award and
Hall of Fame Watch! For those
who attended, you know it was
an emotional ceremony, as
Andy is such a humble athletic
trainer. So if you are ready to
make someone teary....just
kidding... if you are thinking
about nominating someone for
the NYSATA Hall of Fame, the
committee continues to accept nominations through
April 1, 2015. Please contact Deanna with a letter
of nomination for your colleague and we will get the
process started.

Reimbursement
Susan Geisler, MA, PT, ATC - Chair
The NYSATA Reimbursement
Committee is actively seeking
certified athletic trainers who
would like to join this important
and timely committee.
The
tasks of the committee are to
investigate and formulate plans
and processes towards gaining
reimbursement
for
Athletic
Training Services provided by
certified athletic trainers in
NY State. As a profession in NY, strides are being
made to strengthen The Practice Act and continue
increasing the public’s awareness in the value of care
and services provided by certified athletic trainers.
If we are to further the profession of athletic training
in NY State the next critical step is pursuing and
securing reimbursement for appropriate services
provided by certified athletic trainers in NY State. If
successful, all of us will benefit from this initiative,
and so it’s upon all of us to chip in and help.
If you would like to be a part of the NYSATA
Reimbursement Committee, please contact Susan
Geisler. I also invite you to visit the reimbursement
page on the NYSATA web site for further
information.
We are also on LinkedIn
If you are currently receiving reimbursement for
Athletic training services, the committee would like
to hear from you. Specifically, we would like to know:
• your exact setting type, facility name and location.
• which insurance carriers are reimbursing for AT
services.
• if you are submitting under your NPI number, or
under another provider number.
There is a lot of work yet to be done in securing
reimbursement for ATs in NY State, and the committee
welcomes the input and knowledge from you.
NYSATA
College and University
Shawn McNamara, ATC - Chair
NJCAA Region 3
Kyle Roepnack’s is trying to help institute a Health and Safety Council
for all of the athletic trainers from NJCAA Region 3. Kyle is employed
by Herkimer CC. He has reached out to the other ATs in the region, but
some have not jumped aboard to help his efforts. I recently helped to
facilitate this process by showing what we accomplished in the Skyline
conference. Their situation is eerily similar to this particular venture.
We would like to have all of the ATs within the conference join the effort.
The Council is designed to have a mandated amount of coverage and
supplies to be used for the growth of athletic training within the region.

NYSATA Legislative Update
Mary Ann McLean
McLean Advisory Services
Fall is here and I know that those
of you who are involved with team
sports are especially busy now. The
State Legislature is not currently in
session and all 213 seats (63 in the
Senate and 150 in the Assembly)
will be up for election on November
4th. Both of the sponsors of the AT
licensing bill, Senator Grisanti and
Assemblyman Lavine, are seeking
re-election.
During the break from their duties in Albany, all
these legislators are in their local districts and it
is an ideal time to invite them to visit schools and
colleges to get an “up front and personal” view of
the profession of athletic training. Please contact
Christine Jenkins for tips and materials you should
use for these tours. Time and again, after legislators
do these tours, we hear feedback that they had a
great time and learned a lot. Typically they are very
impressed with both the wide variety of services ATs
perform and the close rapport that you have with
the athletes. These are critical messages to deliver
in order to convince these legislators to support the
licensing bill which will update the AT practice act and
allow you to practice more broadly than the current
law permits.
The bills (Senate 4465 and Assembly 6678) will have
to be re-introduced when the Legislative Session
begins again in January since all legislation is only
active for the two year length of each Session. At
this time, we expect to continue to work with Senator
Grisanti and his excellent staff and Assemblyman
Lavine who has a new person on staff. The bills will
be assigned new bill numbers in both houses and you
will be notified as soon as that occurs.
During the off session I have been maintaining
communication with our sponsors and I was
especially pleased to hear that Assemblyman Lavine
had a great tour at Hofstra with Jayne Ellinger in
September. His staff informed me that he really
enjoyed seeing the program first hand and that he
remains very committed to helping us in Albany.
Jayne indicated it was also a positive experience for
her so I encourage anyone who hasn’t led a tour yet
to contact Jayne as well as Christine Jenkins for
the tips and materials I referenced earlier that you
can use to facilitate the invitation and tour.
P7
I am also continuing my efforts, along with NYSATA
leadership, to work with the NYS Physical Therapy
Association to smooth out language in our proposed
licensing bill that, if enacted, might have resulted in
unintended consequences in the field. It is common
for language issues to arise when legislation is
drafted by one entity since that person/group knows
what was meant but that language can be considered
vague or even have alternate meanings when it’s
read by others. It’s important to resolve as many
points of concern as possible before the bills are
presented for a vote in each house.
In addition to our licensing bill, I will continue to
review all legislation that is introduced in the new
Legislative Session and inform NYSATA leadership
of any bills that might be of interest or concern to
you. In this way, your leadership is kept aware of
the issues that the Legislature will be discussing over
the next two years.
Furthermore, I will maintain communication with
the staff at the State Education Department who
regulate your profession. Stephen Boese is the
new Executive Secretary to the State Committee for
Athletic Training and he is working hard to learn more
about the profession. He recently reached out to me
for input from NYSATA on an issue, and in response,
information is being compiled for him. Darryl Daily
serves as the curriculum and instruction expert for
SED in physical education for P-12 education and I
met with him in Albany to make sure he knew NYSATA
was available as a resource if he wanted input on any
current issues. I also mentioned to Stephen Boese
that Mr. Daily has had positive experiences with ATs in
his previous roles in school districts so that these two
SED staffers could contact each other if necessary.
It is important to realize that the P-12 “silo” in SED
typically has little to no contact with the Office of the
Professions that directly regulates ATs. And while
Mr. Daily seems much more informed about ATs than
I believe his predecessors were, we want to try to
avoid another situation where a letter goes out to
all Superintendents about the profession without
some communication with Mr. Boese.
Building
these alliances will help prevent misunderstandings
and miscommunications as we seek to address any
concerns SED may have with the passage of the
updated practice act.
I look forward to hearing about additional outreach
and tours around the state with your local Senators
and Assemblymembers. As always, I will follow up
with every legislator who is contacted when they
return to Albany. I know your outreach and visits
will be very helpful to my efforts in the Legislature!

concussion in sports.
The presentation consisted of our team Neurologist,
Dr. Mark Mirabelli (of the University of Rochester)
discussing concussions (a brief history, signs and
symptoms, and the ways he treats them in his clinic
for in need athletes). Peter McCabe, ATC discussed
and broke down the Nazareth College concussion
policy and all steps the Athletic Training department
takes to determine appropriate referral for the athlete
(including but not limited to: initial concussion
screening/tests, impact testing and BESS testing,
RTP guidelines and return to learn guidelines). The
evening concluded with Ray Ciancaglini speaking
about the importance of concussion education and
awareness, as well as the ramifications of playing
with concussion symptoms.
Not only did the athletes at Nazareth College benefit
from the presentation, but, PT, OT and Speech/

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center
Please help me commend Jeff Green, MS, ATC, for
jumping into action to help save the life of a Grand
Island middle school 8th grader on September 24,
2014 at Grand Island High School.
The female
student participating in gym class collapsed and went
into cardiac arrest on the high school’s athletic field.
The teachers supervising the class called 911 and the
high school office to request an automated external
defibrillator (AED).
Jeff Green, a Niagara Falls
Memorial Medical Center Athletic Trainer assigned
full-time to the Grand Island school district, grabbed
his portable AED and, with another PE teacher, ran
out to the athletic field. Upon arrival, they saw that
CPR had been started by school staff and were told
emergency medical services personnel were on the
way. Jeff and a school nurse attached the AED to the
patient and a shock was advised and delivered. Jeff
continued to perform CPR until he detected a pulse.
Grand Island Fire Co. personnel then worked with
Jeff and school staff to continue CPR and prepare
her for transport to Women & Children’s Hospital
of Buffalo. The patient later underwent surgery for
an implantable defibrillator and has since returned
home. Job well done!

Greetings from the
Section Eight Athletic
Trainer’s Society
(SEATS)
SEATS has had a very
exciting start to the
2014 -2015 school year.
Our organization is now
closing on its 3rd anniversary this coming November
22nd and continues to grow in membership.
Nina VanErk, Executive Director for Section
8 athletics, has continued her support of our
organization. Last spring, a motion was made during
an Athletic Director’s meeting to have the dues for
members of SEATS paid by their respective school
districts through BOCES. We are thrilled to say this
motion was voted on and passed with 33 districts
covering the dues for their athletic trainers. A total
of $680.00 was paid to SEATS. With this, ADs have
asked for updates of our upcoming meetings as well
as having access to SEATS minutes via email. We
would also like to acknowledge Kevin LaPlatney and
the Mineola school district. Mineola has agreed to
pay for the postage for flyers that will be sent to
each school notifying Athletic Directors and Athletic
Trainers of upcoming meetings which Kevin will be
distributing.
Over the summer SEATS member Chris Napoli, with
the help of Craig LoNigro, designed a new logo for
our organization. This new logo now rests on the
left lapel of our Section Eight T-shirt or what we
call our work shirts. These shirts will be worn for
every Section Eight playoff event that our ATs will be
covering.
On November 5th Karen Acompora will be attending
our next SEATS meeting with the Anyone Can Save
A Life Program. This meeting will be held at BOCES
at 7:30PM. SEATS will also host a Lacrosse Sports
Medicine Symposium at Nassau University Medical
Center on March 7th, 2015. This should be an exciting
event with 7 CEs to be awarded for attending. SEATS
member Mike Spreckles has coordinated this event
P14
and has done a fantastic job. Thank you Mike!
SEATS would like to formally introduce Sue Wisla
as SEATS treasurer. Also, SEATS would like to
congratulate James Pierre-Glaude, our new NYSATA
Region 1 Long Island representative. We look forward
to working with James and wish him luck in his new
position. See you at the EATA meeting.
Sincerely,
