ANNUAL MEMORIAL SERVICE
Sunday December 7th
The Waterbury Lodge of Elks will hold its annual Memorial Service in loving memory of Lodge members who passed away
during the past year on Sunday, Dec. 7th, at 11 a.m. in the Lodge Room. It is an Elks tradition that the first Sunday in December
be set aside to honor our departed members. Now it is our turn as brother and sister Elks to answer the call for our departed friends
and their families by coming together in remembrance of their souls, signifying the true spirit of Elkdom.
Music for the service will be provided by the Valley Chordsmen. Please join the Lodge officers in the Lodge Room for an
altar service in memory of our departed members. All families, friends and relatives are invited. Brunch will be served following the
service.

Steak Night....
The House Committee will sponsor a
Steak Night on the Sunday following
Thanksgiving, November 30th.
Come on down and bring your friends.
Let’s kick off the holidays in a big way.
We will take reservations.
Tickets will be available in the
Rathskeller at $15 per person.
In consideration of the time of year, we
will serve promptly at 5 p.m. We will
provide a Steak, vegetable, potato, bread,
butter and dessert.
EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE
I honestly can’t believe that we are already to November. Let me start
by wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. While you are enjoying a great
meal, family and loved ones, always remember to do something to give back.
It may be as simple as opening the door for someone. Try and do one
selfless thing a day and I guarantee, you will live a happier life.
The month of November also brings us Veterans Day. I would like to
thank all of our Veterans and active duty military personnel for keeping us
safe and free. Whenever you see a veteran, thank them for their service. The
Gold Star Mothers will be at the ceremonies and coming down to the lodge
for a luncheon. Heartfelt thanks to PER Pat Kelly for making this event
possible.
Please feel free to join in the Elks in the Connecticut Veterans Day
Parade, as all Elks are eligible to walk. Many members think just the officers can walk in the parade,
but any card carrying member can also participate. You can meet at the Hartford Lodge on November
2nd between 11-11:30am. The parade steps off at 12:30. Unfortunately I will not be attending
because we are holding our Annual Clash of the Bands Benefit for LifeChoice Donor Services on the
same day. If you have been before you know what a wonderful day it is. If you haven’t I charge you
to come down on November 2nd for excellent music and a great cause. As I have said in past articles,
we love seeing new faces. If you wish to volunteer then please let an officer know. We always have
room for more help!
The house committee will be having a Steak Night the Sunday after
Thanksgiving. It is always a sell out and you can’t beat the price. I hope to see
everyone there. Make sure you get your tickets early and enjoy a happy and safe
holiday.
Fraternally,
Ryan Gannon

SECRETARY’S CORNER
Autumn seems to be in full swing, with the colors of the season in full view for us to enjoy.
So is the season where our Lodge will be contacting you for our annual fundraisers, which are sorely
needed. Please give what you can to help keep our Lodge strong.
We still have 83 members that have not paid their dues. This
continues to haunt this Lodge. Although we are not alone in this, it is still
disconcerting. With all that we offer our members and the myriad of ways
that your membership affords us to honor our Order by continuously
serve our young people and veterans, I ask you to consider remitting your
dues and allow us to be the force in the Waterbury area that we have
been for over a century. If you have a hardship, please make an effort to
alert me to your circumstances. There is help available, but you need to
let us know.
The question of Life Membership seems to crop up from time
to time. The qualifications for Life Membership is Bylaw driven and is as
follows:
1) A member has to complete his/her 40th year of membership.
Look at your card, if it has the number 40 on it, then you will have completed
this requirement at the end of this fraternal year.
2) You must be 65 years of age or older
3) You must have been a member of Waterbury Lodge No. 265 for the last 10 years.
If you meet all three of the requirements, then you will be seeing your name soon in this
publication, as you will be balloted upon early next calendar year.
Always remember, that if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, you may reach
me at my email address, which is [email protected], or if email is not available to you, you may call
and leave me a message at 203-755-1779. I only ask that you sign your emails with your name
and/or membership number so that I don’t have to try to figure out who you are from an email
“nickname.”
Fraternally,
JON ARTHUR, PDD, SVP

Secretary

DRUG AWARENESS
Red Ribbon Drug Awareness Ghosts
I would like to thank everyone who purchased a Ghost for the Annual Red Ribbon Program to
commemorate Enrique S. “Kiki” Camarena, an 11 year veteran agent of the DEA who was
kidnapped, brutally tortured and then murdered in Mexico in 1985. Prior to serving with the DEA, Agent
Camarena was a firefighter, a criminal investigator and a narcotics officer. He was a loving husband
and a father of three children. His death has inspired millions of Americans to lead a drug-free life and
the Elks celebrate his commitment to this effort.
October is traditionally Red Ribbon month, a time when people wear red ribbons or purchase
a "Red Ribbon Ghost" to commemorate Agent Camarena’s ultimate sacrifice. The millions of Americans
who wear these ribbons or purchase a Ghost take a stand that they are opposed to illicit drug use and
commemorate all of those who have been tragically affected by the results of use and abuse.
Again, thank you all for supporting this project. The project was once again successful and
100% of the proceeds will be used to purchase basketballs, trophies and other supplies for the Drug
Awareness Program.

Drug Awareness Poster & Essay Contest
“Refuse to Use...You’re Never Alone”
This year’s theme for the Drug Awareness Poster & Essay Contest is "Refuse to
Use...You’re Never Alone." Poster and Essay information and forms are available by contacting me
at 203-592-6715. Any
teachers, public, parochial or private, individuals with children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or
friends grades 3-5 for the poster contest and 6-8 for the essay contest are qualified to enter.
Remember, there does not have to be any Elk affiliation to enter, this is a community project.
Students are allowed to use the computers to submit their essay. We were very pleased to be
able to allow this as legibility is sometimes a factor in the judging. We have had some very good essays
but neatness, spelling and legibility are all taken into consideration and unfortunately, some are
disqualified due to that fact.
We look forward to having another successful contest!!!

The Annual Christmas Appeal
Once again, we have been blessed with the
opportunity to spend another Holiday season enjoying
our family and friends. I do hope and pray that in spite
of a terrible economy that you will have room in your
heart to once again make the annual appeal a success.
In the past, our Lodge has always stepped up to hear
the call of the less fortunate and those in need. This
year the need is greater than ever.
REMEMBER CHARITY IS THE
GREATEST OF ALL VIRTUES.
Please look for your letter which will be arriving in
the mail shortly.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE LIST
Be on the lookout for the “Wish List Santa”
that will be hanging in the hallway of the Lodge around
the middle of November. The child’s name and age
along with their chosen gift will be written on a
numbered tag. You simply take one of the numbered
tags from the tree write your name and contact
telephone number on the
provided list, next to the number that is on the tag.
Please keep this tag and adhere it to the gift!!
There are approximately 75-80 children age
12 and under. Please make sure that your gift is
returned to the Rathskeller by Dec. 5, 2014. No need
to wrap it if you do not want to, we are setting time
aside before the party to wrap gifts. All gifts are to
be new. Again, please make sure that you put the
tag from the tree on each gift so we know who they
will be given to.
This has been a very successful event and we
hope to be able to continue to make the Christmas
holiday a memorable event for those who are less
fortunate than us, remember, “Elks Care, Elks Share.”
Please contact anyone listed below if you have
any questions or would like to volunteer to come down
and wrap gifts or help at the party. If you are a new
member or have never been involved in a project,
this is a great one to get started with. Your help is
always welcome and appreciated. Come on down,
introduce yourself and get involved you, will enjoy it!

ELKS CALL
MUSINGS & DRIVEL
By Jerry Di Pietro
The Children’s Bowling League for youngsters ages 4-14 will be starting up again in January. The league
bowls on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and will run through the end of March. For information, contact Betty Smith
at 203-755-9169. . . Tom and Linda Galvin became grandparents on Sept. 2 with the birth of Peyton
Seamus Nicholson to Edward and Shannon Nicholson Jr. of Middle River, Md., at Franklin Square at
Rosedale, Md. All are doing fine. It’s the third grandchild for the Galvins. . . It seems that Pasquale
DiMaria made quite a return in his first appearance in the Men’s Bowling League on Oct. 3. In addition to
Pat shooting his waist size, he made quite a belly flop on one of his approaches. A true trooper, he
promised to return to the lanes and perfect his style. . . Chris “C.T.” Smith, youngest son of Betty Smith,
was a visitor to our Lodge on Oct. 4. Chris, who saw the rights to his latest book purchased by Disney to
be produced into a film, is confident his book will be going into hard copy in the very near future. . .
Ed Thibodeau was informing the bar of his exploits as a morning school bus driver in 1961 before his afternoon employment
at Speed’s Camera Shop. He said he loved the Waterbury school children and was even treated to a birthday cake shaped like
a school bus one year. He continued that he was later transferred to Naugatuck to transport children to and from St. Francis
School and added that it was a different breed of youngsters. He even said that one child gave him such a hard time that he
tossed him out of the back door of the school bus and continued on his way. Imagine if one tried to do the same in this day and
age. . . Another tale heard at the Rathskeller was that Anthony Maietto, better known to the regulars as Chuck, doesn’t feed
his wife Margie often and that on one occasion, she had to beg for pizza from the basement of their home. Chuck, who became
the first Elk injured at an Elks clambake when he broke his finger having his hose yanked, does feed his wife popcorn at the
Rathskeller. . . Bar steward Robin Abramovich almost gave Chuck, a House Committee member in charge of the bartenders’
schedule, a heart attack one night when she couldn’t find the bar stewards’ schedule and threatened not to show up for work
until she saw one. Chuck felt so guilty that he bought a round of drinks with his American Express card that he purchased at
Costco. . . More next month!

Wasp Spray
An alternative to a pistol under the bed.
A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about
someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting
the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and
they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead.
The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot
more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close to you and
could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get
to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it
doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also
keeps one nearby at home for home protection.
Wasp Spray is inexpensive, easy to find, and far more effective than mace
or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to
break into your home, "spray the culprit in the eyes". That's going to give you a
chance to call the police, maybe get out, maybe even save a life!
