Fellow Members:
As you are aware, I officially assumed office as Exalted Ruler on April 1st. Realizing
that this was April Fools' Day, I, at this time, assure you that I will honestly attempt
not to do anything that could be interpreted by lodge members as being "TOTALLY
FOOLISH" regarding any future actions or decisions. However, please remember
that no one is perfect.
On April 4th, we had our Annual Easter Egg Hunt here at the lodge. The festivities
were well attended by a large turn-out of youngsters who enjoyed hot dogs, ice
cream, chips, and juice. The Easter Bunny arrived right-on-time and was very well
received by both children and adults. A special thank-you goes out to all of those
helpful volunteers who participated in this joyful event.
On Friday, May 8th and Saturday, May 9th, our Elks Lodge will have its Spring
Barbecue which will be held at Bellemore Village from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each
day. This event, as always, definitely requires active member participation in order
to have a successful barbecue.
On May 21st through May 24th, the four-day 2015 Summer Carnival will be held at
the Pavilion. This very special event, again, will require active member participation
in order for this carnival to be as successful as it has been in the past. The Summer
Carnival will feature rides, games, food, and live music.
Sometime in May our lodge will hold the Students of the Year Banquet. Information
is forthcoming.
Friday, May 15th - The Mondin Band - Starting at 7:00. Friday, May 29th - Soulard
Blues Band - Starting at 7:30.

How the Elks Began
It All Began With the Jolly Corks. Starting as as
a group of actors and entertainers bent on
having fun AND avoiding a New York Excise
tax in 1867 (Sundays were the ‘dry’ day), this
convivial group called themselves the Jolly
Corks (for a clever trick with corks they
performed on the uninitiated to win rounds of
drinks). That same year as membership grew,
some members saw the vision to become more
helpful in the community. Alas, two feuding
factions split the group over different
philosophies. Fortunately, the latter faction
moved forward with their new ideals and in
February of 1868, the Benevolent and Protective
Order of Elks was chartered–and with a great
new spirit and direction, began to help Veterans,
Scouting, Scholarships and more–wherever
Charity, Justice and Brotherly Love were
needed!
