Our Catholic Appeal 2014
Did you know? Your gifts to Our Catholic Appeal
bring families closer to God and one another.
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI,
described the family as “the first
and indispensible teacher of
peace.” We want to nurture the
faith of our families and support
them as they face the challenges
of our morally troubled world.
Because of your generous gifts to Our Catholic A ppeal,
all families in our parish – and throughout our diocese
– are able to benefit from support services provided by
the Diocesan Office of Family Life & Pastoral Care.
Opportunities include marriage enrichment programs
as well as workshops designed to address the unique
needs of stepfamilies and single parent families.
For more information on these and other programs contact [email protected] or by phone at
407-246-4865.
Please visit www.cfocf.org/OCA/give to make a gift
online.
Please remember that our parish goal is $336,601. The
pledged amount to date is $286,751 which is 85.2% of
our goal, with 1,220 (50.4%) families participating.
Please consider contributing. Once we have achieved
our goal, the majority of additional funds will be returned
to our parish to support our own local needs. This year, we
will commit our parish over-goal dollars to the building
fund.
Donations received in the second collection, “Building
Fund” are used to support the new church and furnishings, the expansion as well as the future building needs
and renovations for our parish including but not limited
to updating the infrastructure of the existing church and
parking.
Many thanks to those who regularly support the
St. Vincent de Paul Building Fund.
Join the Vivos Christi Society
Vivos Christi Society is our Bishop’s way of celebrating
the generosity of Catholic friends who are providing for
the future of the Church through a planned gift. Have
you remembered your parish, a Catholic school or a ministry of the Diocese of Orlando in your will or estate
plans? If so, Bishop Noonan would welcome the opportunity to honor you as a member. Please contact Ed
Wardle, Director of Donor Relations at 407-246-7193 or
email [email protected].
Save Time and Donate Online!
Our parish now uses an Online Giving system called
WeShare. This allows you to make your donations without
writing a check each week. You can set up a recurring
weekly or monthly payment, allocate different amounts for
our different collections, and view complete, accurate financial records at any time. It saves all of us time and is a
win-win for our parish!
Those who wish to continue to use traditional methods of
offering may do so; however, we ask that you prayerfully
consider Online Giving. If you would like to enroll, please
visit our website and click online contributions. For questions about the program or setting up your account, or for
our help with setting up your donation(s), please don't hesitate to call our parish office at 352-330-0220.

St. Martin of Tours — Patron Saint of Soldiers
A conscientious objector who wanted to be a monk; a monk
who was maneuvered into being a bishop; a bishop who fought
paganism as well as pleaded for mercy to heretics—such was
Martin of Tours, one of the most popular of saints and one of
the first not to be a martyr.
Born of pagan parents in what is now Hungary and raised in
Italy, this son of a veteran was forced at the age of 15 to serve
in the army. He became a Christian catechumen and was baptized at 18. It was said that he lived more like a monk than a
soldier. At 23, he refused a war bonus and told his commander: "I have served you as a soldier; now let me serve Christ.
Give the bounty to those who are going to fight. But I am a
soldier of Christ and it is not lawful for me to fight." After
great difficulties, he was discharged and went to be a disciple
of Hilary of Poitiers (January 13).
He was ordained an exorcist and worked with great zeal against
the Arians. He became a monk, living first at Milan and later
on a small island. Martin returned to France and established
what may have been the first French monastery near Poitiers.
He lived there for 10 years, forming his disciples and preaching
throughout the countryside. The people of Tours demanded that
he become their bishop. He was drawn to that city by a ruse—
the need of a sick person—and was brought to the church,
where he reluctantly allowed himself to be consecrated bishop.
As death approached, his followers begged him not to leave
them. He prayed, "Lord, if your people still need me, I do not
refuse the work. Your will be done."
A story about St. Martin:
On a bitterly cold day, a famous legend goes,
Martin met a poor man, almost naked, trembling in
the cold and begging from passersby at the city
gate. Martin had nothing but his weapons and his
clothes. He drew his sword, cut his cloak into two
pieces, gave one to the beggar and wrapped himself in the other half. Some of the bystanders laughed at his now
odd appearance; others were ashamed at not having relieved the
man's misery. That night in his sleep Martin saw Christ dressed in
the half of the garment he had given away, and heard him say,
"Martin, still a catechumen, has covered me with his garment."

Come Pray for our Troops at Veterans Park
A prayer group for our troops meets every Thursday
at 8:00 a.m. at Veterans' Memorial Park in Spanish
Springs. The group has been meeting for 8 years, and
the main purpose is so the people don't forget our soldiers. The names of any soldier who has lost their life
in the past week are read. Then a list is read of approximately 150 men and women who are now overseas and at home. Then the group says prayers for the
safety of the soldiers and their families. At the end, we
sing a patriotic song.
After the meeting there is a fellowship breakfast at
Too Jays in Spanish Springs. Everyone is welcome. It
is only 20-30 minutes of your time. The troops need to
be remembered; they give us so much.

Four Star Rating
St. Vincent de Paul Catholic
Church has received a four star
rating from the Diocese on
their parish review - the highest
level possible.
Only 8 out of 29 parishes reviewed in 2012 earned the
highest level. The rating system
is based on the observed and
measureable levels of active
engagement by the Pastor,
Parish Finance Committee and
finance staff in the administration of the parish.
This four-star rating is a positive indication that the St. Vincent de Paul Church team is
actively engaged and committed to a strong governance
structure and sound management.
We thank the Pastor, the Parish
Finance Committee, the Finance Staff, Office Staff, Ushers, Money Counters and Office Volunteers for their hard
work and support.
We especially want to thank
the parishioners for their
generosity. Continued financial support is still essential
for our success. Together we
can accomplish great things.
Congratulations!
Job well done.

“Help Us Help Others
with
Donations or Purchases”
Prayer of Blessed Mother Teresa
Make us worthy, Lord,
to serve our fellow human beings
throughout the world,
who live and die in poverty and hunger.
Give them, though our hands,
this day their daily bread,
and by our understanding love,
give peace and joy, Amen.
Outreach and Food Pantry
With the feast of Thanksgiving approaching, our ministry is trying to give food to the "food insufficient" in
the area around the Villages for the holiday and the
weekend when children are home from school. Let us
show our beleaguered brothers and sisters that God
does love them by giving them hope and kindness
through our generosity. Our pantry volunteers are willing to be generous with their time by having the pantry
open the Monday prior to Thanksgiving for food distribution. Could we be generous by our donations so no
one in the area doesn't have something to be thankful?
Many seniors as well as working families have a difficult time to have enough food on the table as well as
paying the electric bill, rent, medical, and auto repairs
when wages are insufficient during the summer and fall
season. Since the area was a large agricultural area,
the county was once one of the poorest in Florida, and
seniors haven't had the employment or educational opportunities that many of us had. Florida still has 25%
of the population living below the poverty level. Donations requested include the following; canned cranberry and apple sauce cornbread, cranberry, and pancake
mixes canned vegetables including sweet potatoes
brownie and/or cake and pie mixes, stuffing and potato
mixes cereal, peanut butter, drink mixes soup and
crackers. Donations to Outreach and the food pantry
can be included in the Sunday collection (please note
which ministry) and nonperishable food can be
placed in the new boxes inside the entrance of the
church.
Our Ministry and food pantry is located in San Pedro
Maldonado Mission Church, downtown Wildwood. This location is convenient for many clients
who don't have transportation. The pantry is open usually on the second and fourth Friday of the
month. Personal assistance volunteers see clients, with
appointments on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday,
starting at 10 am. Income for clients is from Our
Mother's Attic and your donations. Clients are assisted
financially once a year and are given advice for their
budgets and employment. Thank you to the many parishioners, neighborhoods, and clubs who have continuously donated food, and checks to our ministry.
