Narendra Modi arrives in Australia, to highlight
black money issue at G20 summit
A broom in hand,
Pawar responds to
Modi's drive
Press Trust of India
PUNE, Nov 14: Extending his
support to BJP beyond
Maharashtra legislature, NCP
chief Sharad Pawar on Friday
took a broom in his hands in a
gesture signalling a new found
bonhomie between the two parties.
Pawar, accompanied by his
family members who included his daughter and MP
Supriya
Sule,
former
Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit
Pawar as well as party general secretary D P Tripathi,
swept a road in his hometown Baramati in full glare of
cameras which seemed to
drive home the message of
'Swachh Bharat' of the Prime
Minister Narendra Modi-led
NDA government. However,
in an effort to stamp NCP's
distinct identity on the drive,
Pawar had, in a press conference announced that his party
activists would undertake the
cleanliness drive in view of
the rampant dengue cases in
Maharashtra. "We have
started the cleanliness campaign today and photos are
taken. But we have to ensure
that streets are not littered
with garbage tomorrow," he
said after launching the campaign in Baramati.
Obama credits Modi
for WTO deal
WASHINGTON, Nov 14:
United States President Barack
Obama has commended the
“personal leadership” role provided by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi in finding a
path forward on WTO Trade
Facilitation Agreement (TFA)
reached between the two countries,
a
presidential
spokesperson said.
“The President had extensive discussions with Prime
Minister Modi on this issue
and appreciates his personal
leadership in finding a path
forward,” the White House
Press Secretary Josh Earnest
said in a statement after India
and US announced that the
two countries have reached an
agreement on TFA.
In Myanmar, where Mr.
Obama met briefly the Prime
Minister on the sidelines of
the East Asia Summit in Nay
Pyi Daw described Mr Modi
as a man of action.
In a statement, Mr. Earnest
said the important breakthrough reached between the
United States and India will
unlock progress toward the
full and immediate implementation of the WTO Trade
Facilitation Agreement, which
will lower the costs of trade
for developed and developing
countries alike.
“This breakthrough will
also strengthen the multilateral trading system and give a
boost to its ongoing work,
including in the area of food
security,” he said.
“Combined with the recent
announcement of a breakthrough on the WTO
Information
Technology
Agreement (ITA) and the
agreement among Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP)
Leaders that the end of those
landmark negotiations is
coming into focus, this has
been a good week for expanding opportunities for
American businesses and
workers and for promoting
growth around the globe,”
Mr. Earnest said.
BRISBANE, Nov 14: As India
attempts to unearth black
money stashed abroad, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi will
push for stepping up global
cooperation against the key
issue of cross-border tax
avoidance and evasion at the
G20 summit starting here on
Saturday.
Modi, who is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit
Australia in 28 years since
Rajiv Gandhi in 1986, arrived
here on a five-day trip to
Australia on the second leg of
his 10-day three-nation tour.
He will also undertake a
bilateral visit to the Australian capital Canberra for talks
with Premier Tony Abbott on
Tuesday.
The Prime Minister will
also utilize the two-day 9th
G20 summit of the world's
biggest developed and emerging economies, to flag India's
concerns over "jobless
growth" prospects.
Ahead of the summit,
Modi felt that focusing on
transforming the quality of
life of people and not just on
issues like the health of the
financial markets was necessary
for
creating
employment-generating economic growth.
Modi was received at the
airport by the Queensland
Premier Campbell Newman
among others. Indian high
commissioner in Australia
Biren Nanda was also
present.
"A key issue for me would
be to highlight the importance
of international cooperation
against black money," Modi
had said, as he is set to renew
the country's commitment to a
global response to deal with
cross border tax avoidance
and evasion.
Modi had also said he intends to discuss how G20
can accelerate creation of next
generation
infrastructure,
which also includes digital
infrastructure and ensure access to clean and affordable
energy.
The G20 includes 19 individual countries — Argentina,
Australia, Brazil, Canada,
China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan,
South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South
Africa, Turkey, the UK and
the US — and the European
Union (EU). Collectively, the
G20 economies account for
around 85 per cent of the
GDP, 80 per cent of world
trade and two-thirds of the
world population. The G20
was launched in 2008 in the
US.
BILASPUR, Nov 14
Police said on Friday that they
have arrested the head of a drug
manufacturing company and
his son on suspicion of
destroying evidence in the case
of 13 women who died after a
mass sterilization programme.
Police said they had taken
the two men into custody on
Thursday after a raid on their
drugs factory in central
Chhattisgarh state, where dozens more women were still in
hospital after undergoing the
surgery.
The deaths have triggered
widespread criticism of a government-run programme that
offers poor women cash incentives to get sterilized, in
what activists say are often
horrible conditions.
Superintendent
Om
Prakash Pal told AFP the two
men, who ran a drug-making
unit in the state capital Raipur,
would be questioned on "the
quality of drugs they were
making".
Their arrest came a day
after police detained the surgeon who performed the
operations, RK Gupta, who
has blamed poor-quality
drugs for the deaths.
A local official said evidence had been burned at the
arrested men's factory. "We
conducted a raid yesterday.
We found drugs had been
burned in large quantities,"
said the official.
Gupta operated on 83
women in just five hours on
Saturday — spending an average of less than four
minutes on each patient.
He has accused the government of making him a
scapegoat for the controversial sterilization scheme,
which pays impoverished
women 1,400 rupees ($23) to
go under the knife.
Although no cause of
death has officially been
given, authorities speculated
that the women had died of
septic shock. The state has
launched a judicial enquiry,

The minister had earlier
told NDTV that the case, filed
by a rival Bahujan Samaj
Party candidate who lost to
him in the 2009 national elections, was a result of political
vendetta. He also claimed that
he had been given a clean chit
by an inquiry conducted by
the Uttar Pradesh government
under Mayawati.
In 2012, the Allahabad
High Court dismissed Mr
Katheria's challenge and directed the Agra sessions court
to resolve the case as soon as
possible, preferably within
four months of receiving the
order.
Mr Katheria has been
charged with cheating and
dishonesty under Section 420
of the Indian Penal Code. If
convicted, he could get a
prison term of up to seven
years. Convicted politicians
are disqualified from office
and are barred from contesting elections for several years
after a landmark Supreme
Court ruling last year.
This is only one of the 21
cases that Mr Katheria has
listed in his election affidavit.
He was a key target of the
Congress when it attacked the
Modi government over the
induction of several ministers
this week.
Senior Congress leader
Digvijaya Singh today
tweeted, "First Minster HRD
and now MOS HRD has
given Fraud Mark Sheet ! On
top of it RSS wants to change
the Text Books and Indian
History !"
Finance Minister Arun
Jaitley had retorted that the
Samajwadi Party government
in UP had slapped criminal
cases against all BJP workers
in the state.
In a recent judgment, the
Supreme Court said it trusts
the Prime Minister not to include a politician on his team
who has faced serious criminal charges.
This is the second row
over a marksheet against a
minister in the education ministry. Education Minister
Smriti Irani had earlier faced
a controversy over her educational qualifications as well
because two separate affidavits filed by her had
discrepancies in them.

Modi proposes polio eradication,
regional satellite to Myanmar
Press Trust of India
NEW DELHI, Nov 14: Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on
Thursday proposed SAARCspecific benefits like polio
eradication and dedicated
regional satellite to Myanmar,
an observer in the eightmember South Asian grouping.
Addressing the Indian
diaspora at the end of his
three-day visit here during
which he attended ASEAN
and East Asia summits apart
from holding bilateral talks
with several leaders, Modi
said India's stature has gone
up globally in the last few
months and the whole world
was now seeing it through a
changed eye.
"They are looking at ways
to reach out to us," Modi said
amid thunderous applause.
Dressed in his trade mark
kurta
pyjama
with
a local head-gear, gifted to
him by the Indian community
members, the Prime Minister
also referred to his pet 'Make
in India' initiative and said,
"We want everyone to come
and look at the opportunities
India has to offer."
In his brief address, Modi
spoke about India's initiative
to launch an exclusive satellite for the SARRC countries
and said Myanmar will also
benefit from it in sectors like
health, tele-medicine and education.
Noting that India has always strived to help countries
of the region, he said, discussions will be held on ways to
eradicate polio from the region in the forthcoming
SAARC
Summit
in
Kathmandu. He said the initiative will help Myanmar
also.
"India
succeeded in the fight against
polio. But cases of polio are
still being reported in neigh-
bouring countries like Pakistan. India will contribute
significantly to the neighbouring countries on this issue
(polio eradication)," Modi
said.
Referring to India's ties
with Myanmar, the Prime
Minister said the two countries are "linked" historically
as both had struggled for independence together.
He also referred to economic opportunities in India
and said the country has the
largest number of young talent in the world which is a
great asset.
Modi said he met a number
of world leaders in the last
three days and meeting them
was a "satisfying" experience.
Earlier, the PM met the
guests, numbering around
300, individually and spent up
to 20 minutes with them.

Theme
Jobs and growth will remain the focus of the G20
summit, despite strenuous
lobbying to shift the spotlight
to climate change and Ebola.
Australia, which holds the
G20 presidency, today reemphasized the summit's
mission when Treasurer Joe
Hockey stressed the heavy
burden on group members "to
get real outcomes".
"We have a plan before the
leaders of the world to grow
the world economy, to create
the jobs that are necessary, to
lift people out of poverty, and
we are determined to deliver
that," he said.
On the table is Australia's
call for the G20 to collectively add at least two per cent
to world growth to 2018. If
successful, this could generate millions of jobs, massive
infrastructure activity and cut
red tape.
G20 countries have also
produced 1,000 plans to support the growth target.
Modi, referring to his four-
city Australia visit that covers
Brisbane, Melbourne and
Sydney besides Canberra,
had earlier said, "While we
have much in common with
Australia, our political, strategic and economic relations
have been below potential."
"A closer strategic partnership with Australia will
support India's economic
goals; promote our security
interests, including maritime
security; and, reinforce our
efforts to foster a climate of
peace and stability in our extended continental and
maritime neighbourhood," he
said.
Indian officials said that
the prime minister's trip will
be a "landmark visit" and is
aimed at "re-engaging" Australia.
On the sidelines of the
G20 summit, Modi is due to
hold a series of bilateral meetings
including
with
Germany's Angela Merkel,
UK's David Cameron and
France's Francois Hollande.
Modi will also have an
informal interaction with Chinese President Xi Jinping
during a meeting of leaders of
five-nation BRICS. He is also
due to address a joint sitting
of Federal Parliament in Canberra and the Indian
community at a reception at
the Olympic park in Sydney.
Modi will travel to Fiji on
a day-long visit on November
19 before returning home the
next day. He will be the first
Indian Premier to visit the
south Pacific Island nation
after a gap of 33 years, the
first being Indira Gandhi in
1981.
