FROM THE CHAIR — THE ART OF STORYTELLING
On behalf of the Board of the Shorts Film
Festival, it is my pleasure to welcome you to this
year’s festival. Shorts came to life in February
2003, screening all entered films in a venue that
was once a motor garage. Shorts has since grown,
and now features the Top 30 films from entries
received Australia-wide and from Asia-Pacific.
Marking a new era in the Festival’s
11-year history, Shorts is very
excited to bring you this year’s
festival outdoors at the Frome
Street Surf Life Saving Club.
Ross Ganf, the Creative Director
behind Adelaide Festival’s
Barrio and Lola’s Pergola, has
transformed Stratco City Beach
into a unique outdoor cinema.
Once a biennial event, it is now
an annual fixture with a style that
is uniquely ‘Shorts’. This is not
cinema as you expect it. You are
part of the screening, not just a
passive viewer. With great wine
from Alpha Box & Dice, delicious
food from Golden Gullet, music
from DJ Dexter and the Adelaide
vinyl beach combers, and the
highest quality screening and
sound systems from Mosaic
Audio Visual, you can enjoy
true entertainment—an eclectic
collection of films to make you
think and spark conversation.
The Shorts experience is all
about sitting down with friends,
or strangers who may well
become your friends by the end
of the night, and discussing what
you’ve just experienced. Who
knows, the filmmaker may even
be right next to you... this is what
Shorts is all about.
None of this would be
possible without the generous
and committed support from
our sponsors. We are especially
grateful to those who began the
journey with us and who have
remained alongside us for the ride
—Kojo Group, sector7g and Best
Fx—their incredible passion for
film and creative work has helped
to nurture Shorts.
And of course we are
delighted with the continuing
support of sponsors such as
Flinders University, Beach Energy,
Finlaysons and Kennedy & Co,
who share our vision for the
festival and its future.
All of the Directors and
many of the staff are volunteers,
putting countless hours into
an event that we truly love.
Our judges—more than fifty
every year—watch every entry
and provide considered and
thoughtful feedback to ensure
that the films presented to you
are truly all about the story.
We trust that you will have an
immensely enjoyable time during
the show.
Lastly, I would like to thank
our festival management team,
Anastasia Renfrey, Ross Ganf
and Travis Kalendra who have
worked tirelessly to make Shorts
a success.
To all our filmmakers,
sponsors, patrons, supporters,
judges, volunteers, guests and
audience members who make this
event possible, we thank you!
Paul Jorgensen (Chair)
On behalf of the Board of
Festival Directors:
Teri Whiting (Founding Director),
Yuko Nakayama, John MacPhail,
Alison Wotherspoon and
Kirsty Stark.

JOHN CHATAWAY FESTIVAL LEGEND AWARD
The inaugural Shorts Film Festival Legend Award was
presented in 2009. Following the untimely passing of a
dearly loved friend and colleague in the South Australian
film industry, John Chataway, the Shorts Board honored him
and his unswerving support for the festival by renaming the
award in his memory. The John Chataway Festival Legend
Award is given at the discretion of the Board to someone who
is deemed to have given meritorious service to Shorts Film
Festival over a long period of time and made a significant

FROM LITTLE THINGS
BIG THINGS GROW
Many short films are labours of love, made on
microscopic budgets within limited resources by
enthusiastic emerging filmmakers. Often these
creative teams meet up while studying and go on
to forge successful careers.
After directing award winning short films, which
include My Last Ten Hours with You, Elephantiasis
and Necessary Games, former Flinders University
student, Sophie Hyde, has gone onto international
acclaim as the director of the feature film
52 Tuesdays. Sophie, in collaboration with former
Flinders University students Rebecca Summerton,
Matt Bate and Bryan Mason are Closer Productions,
an Adelaide based collective of filmmakers that
is having some remarkable success nationally and
internationally. That 52 Tuesdays won awards at the
Sundance Film Festival and Berlin International Film
Festival – while working from Adelaide, makes it
even more remarkable.
Sophie believes part of the reason for Closer’s
success is the support they are able to offer each
other because of the relationships they have
developed since meeting as first year Screen and
Media students at Flinders.
“When I finished school I was going to take a year
off but then I came to Flinders and saw a film
lecture. I was so excited by it that I decided to enrol.
“It was during our first year that we all met
– although we only came together at Closer
Productions later. We’re all really close friends now
and because of that we’re able to be fairly brutal
with each other about how things are going.
“That’s absolutely a product of knowing each other
for such a long time, but it’s also just part of who
we are as people, because we’re all very driven by
our work.
“I thought when you grew up you met and got along
with lots of people but as I got older I realised that
it’s actually quite rare and you should hold onto
those people.
Asked whether she has advice for young Australian
film makers, Ms Hyde says they should be clear
about what they want, and not assume they have to
do it the conventional way.
“When we were going through Flinders I didn’t feel
like you could make films and stay in Adelaide,”
she said. “There were some exceptions, like Scott
Hicks, but generally I felt like it was all happening
somewhere else.
“I hope that young film makers will look at the
success of 52 Tuesdays and how we work at Closer,
which has been set up so that we can make films in
South Australia, and see they can create the things
they want and that not everyone has to do the same
thing.
“I’d advise them to be very clear about they want to
do and try their best to get it. The most important
things are to make a choice and not feel like you
have to live by the rules that other people have
set up.
“Success can happen very slowly, and the creativity
happens in all areas, so how you set your life up is
also really important.”
