This interdisciplinary Master’s programme investigates vital questions facing European countries
today. It will equip you with the knowledge and skills to answer these questions and formulate
appropriate responses to the challenges they pose. You will study in two different cities and
countries, obtain two master's degrees and you will have a unique opportunity to see various levels
of government at work in two different contexts.
PRESSING CONCERNS FACING EUROPE TODAY
Double degree, two different locations
European Governance is a unique double-degree programme offered
in partnership with Masaryk University (Brno, Czech Republic) and the
University of Konstanz (Germany). As a student in this programme,

The master’s programme in European Governance
explores pressing concerns facing Europe today: How
can we regulate financial markets in crisis? How can
we make the transition to a green economy and
sustainable forms of energy? Will reforms to welfare
states foster economic growth, and if so, how do we
approach these reforms? What are the emerging
patterns of intelligence sharing and law enforcement
within the context of cross-border policing? Are
European countries becoming more similar and
homogenous because of the EU? Does the EU unify
us as equals or undermine democracy?
These are amongst the most important questions facing
Europe today. Each issue involves activities at the
local, national, and European level, and each requires
insight into the fields of economics, law, and public
administration. The interdisciplinary Master’s
programme in European Governance will equip you
with the knowledge and skills to answer these
questions and to formulate appropriate responses to the
challenges they pose. Our programme prepares you to
deal with and work within the framework of
European governance – both in Brussels and at home.

STUDYPROGRAMME
Year 1 of the programme is spent either at Masaryk
University in Brno (Czech Republic) or at the
University of Konstanz (Germany). Each university
brings its specific colour to the double-degree
programme, thanks to their different locations within
Europe and the different specialisations they offer.
Masaryk University has, among other things, particular
expertise in the sociopolitical aspects of European
governance and the transformation of Central and
Eastern Europe since the late 1980s. The University of
Konstanz has a strong research tradition in
international relations and European integration.
Year 2 is taken by all students together at Utrecht
University (The Netherlands). The University focuses
on an interdisciplinary study of European governance,
using the combined insights of law, economics, public
administration, and organisational science.
In the final semester, all students write a thesis as part
of a research internship within an organisation that

Double degree
Successful graduates will receive two Master diplomas, one from each
university, specifying that the degree was completed in cooperation
between the universities. The two Master diplomas are equivalent to
the Master’s degree in countries of the three partner universities as
follows: Brno (Czech Republic): Magistr/ Magistra (Mgr), Konstanz
(Germany): Master of Arts (Ma) and Utrecht (The Netherlands): Master
of Science (MSc).

but also from a law and economic approach. Furthermore I find it of
added value to focus on classic courses about the EU but also to learn
more about the position of Europe as an international actor.

Applications for admission to the double-degree
Master's Programme in European Governance will be
welcomed from candidates with a BSc or BA in
disciplines such as Social Studies, Law, Economics,
Governance and Organisational Science, Liberal Arts
and Sciences, Sociology, Political Science,
International Relations or European Studies, and who
can demonstrate a previous interest in European issues.
Previous degree: The minimum requirement for
admission is a Dutch Bachelor’s degree in one of the
above fields (or international equivalent).

SELECTION PROCEDURE
Only 25 to 30 students can be selected to the
programme as admission is possible for students in the
three participating universities Utrecht, Brno and
Konstanz. Selection will be made by a Joint Selection
Committee from the participating universities. An
