ABOUT THE COURSE
The objective of this Faculty Development
Programme is to give a better exposure to the
faculty
members
on
the
subject
“ENGINEERING MECHANICS”. Engineering
Mechanics (EM) is the most fundamental course
in the extensive area of mechanics. The basic
concepts dealt in EM form the cornerstone of
advanced topics such as solid mechanics,
structural
mechanics
and
bio-mechanics.
Similarly, the ideas and techniques that are
developed in EM are also indispensable in
structural design. A rigorous training in both
basic concept and problem solving is essential for
a solid foundation in different engineering
disciplines such as Civil, Mechanical and
Aeronautical. The objective of this course is to
introduce the fundamentals of EM with special
emphasis on problem solving. Since problem
solving is the backbone of EM, there will be
supervised tutorial sessions where the participants
will apply the concepts discussed in the lectures
and solve a variety of problems.
BASICS AND STATICS OF PARTICLES: Laws
of Mechanics, Vectorial representation of forces,
Vector operations subtraction, dot product, cross
product, Coplanar Forces, Equilibrium of a particle,
Forces in space, Equilibrium of a particle in space
Equivalent systems of forces.
EQUILIBRIUM OF RIGID BODIES: Free body
diagram, supports and reaction, Moments and
Couples, Moment of a force about a point and about
an axis, Vectorial representation of moments and
couples, Varignon’s theorem, Single equivalent
force, Equilibrium of Rigid bodies in two
dimensions & three dimensions.

PROPERTIES OF SURFACES AND SOLIDS:
Centroids and centre of mass, Moment of Inertia
of areas: Rectangular, Circular, Triangular areas
by integration, T, I, Angle Section & Hollow
Section by using standard formula. Parallel &
Perpendicular theorems, Pappus theorems.
Principal Moments of inertia of plane areas, Mass
Moment of inertia for Prismatic, Cylindrical and
Spherical Solids from first principle.
DYNAMICS OF PARTICLES: Displacements,
Velocity & Acceleration, Relative Motion,
Curvilinear motion, Newton’s Laws of motion,
Work Energy Equation, Impulse and Momentum,
Impact of Elastic Bodies.
FRICTION AND ELEMENTS OF RIGID BODY
DYNAMICS: Friction force, Laws of Sliding
Friction, Equilibrium Analysis of Simple
Systems with Sliding Friction, Wedge Friction.
Rolling Resistance, Velocity and Acceleration,
General Plane Motion of Simple rigid bodies
such as Cylinder, Disc/wheel and Sphere.
ABOUT THE INSTITUTION
University College of Engineering Dindigul
campus was established in the year 2009 and
currently merged with Anna University, Chennai
as per the Act of Tamilnadu Government to
strengthen and improve the quality of higher
education in the state of Tamilnadu. The college
runs four Under Graduate Engineering
programmes namely Civil, ECE, EEE &
Mechanical and three Part Time Degree
programmes namely Civil, EEE & Mechanical
Engineering.
