MASTERS PROGRAM: PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that job opportunities for scientists trained in areas focused on health and drug development, including pharmaceutical scientists, will grow significantly up through 2020. Jobs for pharmaceutical scientists are expected to grow primarily in private pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, but careers in education, regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration, and national laboratories such as the National Institutes of Health are also robust. Median annual salaries for pharmaceutical scientists range from $50,000 to upwards of $120,000. The program is interdisciplinary, bringing together scientists from the disciplines of pharmacology, physiology, pharmaceutics, toxicology and medicinal chemistry to provide students with individualized, research training. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Pharmaceutical Sciences program educates students in the scientific disciplines required for the discovery, development and evaluation of new drugs and other pharmaceutical products. Students enrolled in the thesis program focus on in basic or translational research under the supervision of a thesis advisor and committee of graduate research faculty. Students work side-by-side with faculty on a variety of research areas, including drug discovery and development, molecular modeling, chemical synthesis, in vitro and in vivo studies of drug mechanisms and pharmacological actions, pharmacokinetic analysis and the transport and absorption of nanopharmaceuticals. This path is ideal for those interested in working as research scientists or pursuing PhD or MD degrees. A wide range of resources are provided by numerous scientific societies and organizations committed to supporting and promoting research in drug design, drug development, and drug delivery. Members of these organizations contribute to pharmaceutical education, research and development. • National Institute of Health (NIH) • American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) • American Chemical Society (ACS) In 2013, Karen Glass, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences’ Vermont Campus, was awarded a three-year grant from the National Institute of Health totaling $353,400. Her research is aimed at identifying new ways to prevent and treat Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). “There is no single factor, but rather a series of events, which leads to a disease such as AML,” said Dr. Glass. “If we can better understand the basic mechanisms controlling gene expression, and how chromosomal translocations lead to AML and other cancers, then we will be able to diagnose and treat AML patients more effectively. The earned degree should be in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences or related field. Research Rotation • Minimum two letters of recommendation from faculty and/or professional, relevant sources who can attest to your likelihood of success in graduate school. • Resume. • Personal essay outlining relevant background/experience and why you wish to attend ACPHS. • Official GRE scores.
