1. How to use this Guide
This Course Enrolment Guide 2015 provides you with information on when and where the units available
for study in this program(s) will be offered in 2015.
Enrolling in units for 2015

Read Section 2. ‘Program Maps’ for information on course structure and unit sequence. Take note of
any prerequisite or co-requisite requirements before selecting particular units. Take note of the study
period in which units are offered.
• A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met by a student before enrolment in a stipulated
unit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the prerequisites for a unit prior to enrolling
into that unit.
• A co-requisite is a requirement that must be met by having already passed or being concurrently
enrolled in an associated unit in order to be able to enrol in the stipulated unit.
If you wish to enrol into a unit for which you have not met the prerequisite or co-requisite
requirements, please obtain approval from your Course Coordinator.

Failure to enrol or re-enrol before the published due dates for re-enrolment on the ACU website
(http://students.acu.edu.au/381148) may result in late fee penalties.
Even if you are unsure of what units you need to enrol in, please ensure that you enrol or re-enrol
in at least one unit before the due date. Enrolling in at least one unit by the due date will enable
you to add further units, or amend your enrolment via Student Connect up until the final dates
published in the Critical Dates for Variation of Enrolment on the ACU website

Core Curriculum
The Australian Catholic University Core Curriculum has been designed for undergraduate courses to focus
on aspects of the University’s identity and mission. The units emphasise critical judgement, clear
expression, ethical decision-making and concern for others as individuals and as a community. Depending
on your course, the Core may be comprised of one or two University Core units, two Core Curriculum
Program units and one Community Engagement unit. The Core Curriculum units are included in the
program maps. For more information on the Core Curriculum please refer to

The University Core Curriculum units are:

UNCC300 Understanding Self and Society: Contemporary Perspectives
These units are often taught over differing week patterns to allow for student placements at various times
during semester. Students should take special care to note the week pattern of tutorials when they allocate
in tutorial direct to ensure that they are choosing the correct stream for their course.
Note: Students should enroll in Mixed Mode and not in On Campus mode.
Please consult with your Course Coordinator if the following applied to you:
• You need to repeat a UNCC unit due to a previous fail grade.
• You are unable to complete a UNCC unit during the standard semester it is offered.
• You plan to enroll in an advertised international option specific to the Core.
Introduction of Honours Stream – Bachelor of Education (Primary) – only available to 2013 and
2014 intakes
A Primary Honours program has been approved for eligible students who commence their first year of the
BEd (Primary) in Semester 1, 2013 or later. Students who have attained a minimum GPA of 6.0 in years
one and two of their course may be invited to take the Honours program to deepen their understanding of
the nexus between research and practice. It will provide students with a pathway to access higher degree
research. A minimum GPA of 6.0 must be maintained for the duration of the course. The first Honours unit
will commence in Prfessional Term 1, 2015.

Pre-service teachers seeking accreditation to teach Religious Education in Catholic schools
Teachers in Catholic primary schools are normally required to be able to teach Religious Education.
Pre-service teachers wishing to teach in a Catholic primary school require the following units for
accreditation to teach Religious Education:

Note: Students seeking accreditation to teach Religious Education in Catholic schools will not take
UNCC300 Understanding Self and Society: Contemporary Perspectives in their third year, but will
complete THCT202 instead. Students will also complete two electives.

Pre-service teachers who have completed three Theology units (must be THBS100, THCT100 and
THCT202) and who wish to complete further Theology units in order to undertake a Catholic Studies minor
or major can choose to do additional Theology units as electives. Please see table below.

Pre-service teachers NOT seeking to teach in Catholic schools
Pre-service teachers not seeking to gain accreditation to teach Religious Education in Catholic schools will
complete six elective units, as well as UNCC300 Understanding Self and Society in the third year of the
course.
Pre-service teachers seeking accreditation to teach in Lutheran schools
Pre-service teachers seeking to gain accreditation to teach in Lutheran schools will complete the Lutheran
units by distance mode, which means that materials prepared by staff from the Australian Lutheran College
are sent to pre-service teachers enrolled in specific Lutheran units. When the subjects are completed, preservice teachers must apply for credit, to ensure these units are added to their ACU transcript. Please
contact your Course Coordinator for details.
Elective Units
Pre-service teachers who choose to undertake accreditation to teach in Catholic Schools will undertake
two elective units in the third and fourth year of the course. Six elective units are available for pre-service
teachers not seeking accreditation to teach in Catholic schools. Please note that two of these six units
must be education electives. Electives may be chosen from those listed in Section 3, above. Electives
offered are subject to availability of staff and enrolment numbers. It is important to check which units are
being offered in each academic period.
Bachelor of Education (Primary) with Honours– only available to 2013 and 2014 intakes
To be invited to apply for the Honours program, a student must have completed 160 cp from Years 1 and 2
of the Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 6.0. Students
must maintain a minimum GPA of 6.0 for the duration of the course.
Identified Honours applicants who fulfil the admission criteria will be invited to enrol into three Honours
units (40cp) in Years 3 and 4 and will not be required to complete the 10 cp unit: EDFD457 Action
Research as a Reflective Practice. For students who wish to teach in Catholic schools this will result in a
10 cp unit overload, (330 cp program), although Honours students will undertake the same number of units
as other students (the 10cp overload is the result of undertake a 20cp unit instead of EDFD457). Identified
Honours applicants who do not wish to teach in Catholic schools may complete the BEd(Pri)(Hons) in 320
cp by utilising existing course electives.
Professional Experience
Whilst undertaking your course you will be placed by the ACU Professional and Community Experience
(PCE) personnel in schools to complete school-based experiences. Where possible, placements are in a
range of year levels (early years, middle and senior) and in a variety of school contexts. Placements will be
organised in schools where the pre-service teacher has no prior experience or association (e.g., part-time
employment, has relatives within the school). Placements may comprise both one day a week school visits
and blocked time as articulated in the School of Education Victoria calendar.
All pre-service teachers are encouraged to undertake country placements during their Education course.
During your course you will complete:
80 days supervised practicum
20 days of school-based learning
70 hours of community engagement
Professional and Community Experience teaching rounds are block placements which must be undertaken
at the times noted on the School of Education Victoria Calendar. The teaching placements cannot be
undertaken on a part-time basis.
Holidays scheduled during allocated placement time cannot and will not be accommodated. Please
ensure that you check the School of Education Victoria Calendar to ensure your holiday does not clash
with any of your placements prior to booking. A failure to take your scheduled PCE placement dates into
consideration whilst booking trips may result in a delay in the completion of your course.

It is a condition at ACU (Melbourne Campus) that every student enrolled in the Bachelor of Education
(Primary) degree applies for and is granted an approved Working With Children Check (WWCC) and a
National Police Certificate (NPC) clearance. Both the WWCC and NPC documentation must be presented
to the PCE Office prior to the commencement of the first teaching placement in the course EDFX110
(Semester 2 of first year). Failure to produce such documentation means that the pre-service teacher will
not commence that EDFX110 placement (and possibly any subsequent placements) as scheduled. Details
about applying for a WWCC and an NPC are provided to students through information sessions.
InPlace - Placement Management System for Education Students
The Faculty of Education & Arts at Australian Catholic University (ACU) has implemented InPlace, a
placement management system which streamlines registration, requests, and allocation of Professional
and Community Engagement placements.
InPlace will provide education pre-service teachers with greater access to information relating to their
Professional and Community Experience placements. Pre-service teachers enrolling in Professional and
Community Experience units, with an EDFX, ADFX and SDFX code, will be able to register and access
allocated placement records online.
Key benefits from InPlace include:
• Online registration for placements
• Ease in updating professional/community placement information
• Ability to receive placement notifications online
• Access placement allocations online
InPlace draws upon Student Connect data. In order that “best match” placements are made, please
ensure that your personal details, including address and mobile phone number are current and up
to date in Student Connect. To update your details log on to Student Connect
(http://students.acu.edu.au/136953).
Note: Mandatory documentation such as Working with Children Check Card/National Police Certificates
will still need to be lodged in person at your local Professional & Community Experience Office.
Additional Requirements – Working With Children Check and National Police Certificate
All pre-service teachers must apply for and obtain a Working With Children Check Card and National
Police Certificate before they will be permitted to participate in the Professional and Community
Experience Program. There are no exceptions to this requirement and no pre-service teachers will be
placed in a school, kindergarten, early childhood service or community setting without a valid Working With
Children Check Card and National Police Certificate.
Pre-service teachers must download an application form for a Working With Children Check (WWCC)
during the enrolment period. Students are classified by the Department of Justice Victoria as “volunteers”
for this purpose and no fee is charged for this check. It is the student's responsibility to submit the
application form and, upon receiving the WWCC Card, submit the original WWCC Card and a copy of the
original WWCC Card to Professional and Community Experience office at the appropriate campus.

The Professional and Community Experience personnel will sight the original Working With Children Check

copy will be placed in the pre-service teacher’s Professional & Community Experience file. Pre-service
teachers must carry the WWCC Card and National Police Certificate every time they visit a school or work
with children as part of their University Course.
International students must obtain and submit their relevant police check from their home country and from
any other country/ies where they have been domiciled for twelve months or more for the last ten years to
the Professional and Community Experience office. These police checks must be sighted and

authenticated before these pre-service teachers will be permitted to undertake a Professional Experience
placement within schools.
Community Engagement
Community Engagement (EDFX207) is a compulsory component of the course which is completed during
Year 3. It involves pre-service teachers working in partnership with a registered agency such as The Smith
Family or the Brotherhood of Saint Laurence for example in projects which seek to improve the education
and well-being of people in disadvantaged and/or marginalised groups in the community.
Involvement in Community Engagement Placements varies from weekly placements throughout the year to
block periods of time.
All projects must be approved by the Communitiy Engagement Lecturer-in-Charge prior to beginning.

Out-of-phase pre-service teachers or those repeating a unit
Pre-service teachers who are returning to study following a period of leave of one semester or more may
find that their original program map has been phased out and/or that some units are no longer available. In
such cases it is important that you request an appointment with the Course Coordinator, Course Advisor or
Course Administrator to check that the units which you are enrolling into are appropriate.
Communication
Pre-service teachers are expected to check their ACU email accounts regularly in order to keep up-to-date
with information that the University may be communicating to them.
Pre-service teachers can expect to receive communication from the Course Coordinator which are sent to
pre-service teacher ACU email accounts or placed as announcements to the Special Unit – BEd Primary
(Melb) available in the Learning Environment Online.
All emails to University staff must be sent from the Pre-service teacher’s ACU email account. Staff are not
permitted to reply to student emails from non-ACU addresses.
Study Abroad
Pre-service teachers consistently achieving high academic results may consider studying abroad for one
semester, usually in the first semester of Year 3. Study abroad will extend the length of time necessary to
complete your course.
Credit
Credit for units, completed at a tertiary institution other than ACU, either as part of a non award course or
as part of an undergraduate teacher education course, will be considered in cases where 80% of the
learning outcomes studied match those of units in the program offered at ACU. Applications for credit with
supporting documentation are to be submitted within the first six weeks of commencing the course. Please

Credit is granted for all successfully completed units within either the Certificate, Advanced Certificate or
Diploma in Educational Studies at ACU because these units are also in the Bachelor of Education
(Primary) program.

Notice for students who wish to exit from a course of study other than that for which they are
enrolled
(a)
if you intend to continue with your current course, you are not permitted to exit with a lower level
award, however you may request a letter from your Course Coordinator confirming that you have
satisfied the requirements for the relevant lower award;
(b)
if you do in fact exit with a lower level award and subsequently wish to resume your studies in
the higher level course, you will be required to reapply for admission to that course in order to
resume your studies.
(c)
if you intend to continue in a dual degree, you cannot exit with a single level award, but you may
request a letter from the Course Coordinator confirming that you have satisfied the requirements
for the relevant single award.
