How to use this Guide This Course Enrolment Guide 2015 provides you with information on when and where the units available for study in this program(s) will be offered in 2015. Enrolling in units for 2015 1. Read Section 2. ‘Program Map’ for information on course structure and unit sequence. Take note of any prerequisite or co-requisite requirements before selecting particular units. Take note of the study period in which units are offered. • A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met by a student before enrolment in a stipulated unit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the prerequisites for a unit prior to enrolling into that unit. • A co-requisite is a requirement that must be met by having already passed or being concurrently enrolled in an associated unit in order to be able to enrol in the stipulated unit. If you wish to enrol into a unit for which you have not met the prerequisite or co-requisite requirements, please obtain approval from your Course Coordinator. 2. Log on to Student Connect and enrol (http://students.acu.edu.au/136953). Student Connect is a web interface allowing students to complete their ACU enrolment online. IMPORTANT NOTE Failure to enrol or re-enrol before the published due dates for re-enrolment on the ACU website (http://students.acu.edu.au/381148) may result in late fee penalties. Even if you are unsure of what units you need to enrol in, please ensure that you enrol or re-enrol in at least one unit before the due date. Enrolling in at least one unit by the due date will enable you to add further units, or amend your enrolment via Student Connect up until the final dates published in the Critical Dates for Variation of Enrolment on the ACU website (http://students.acu.edu.au/273880). “Turnitin” The Faculty of Education and Arts values students’ academic honesty and integrity. It employs a range of processes and technologies to support students to ensure their work aligns with University’s Academic Honesty Policy and Framework for Academic Integrity. Turnitin, now available at ACU, is an online originality checker and is an educative tool for students. It allows students to preview their work and identify originality prior to handing in assessment items. Program Information REQUIREMENTS TO COMPLETE AWARD For information on the duration of your course, and the requirements to complete your award, please refer to the Course Rules for your program. Course Title Course Rules Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) (for Domestic and International students) https://students.acu.edu.au/643182 Students enrolling in units which do not follow the sequence recommended in their Program Map cannot be guaranteed a clash free timetable. Notice for students who wish to exit from a course of study other than that for which they are enrolled (a) if you intend to continue with your current course, you are not permitted to exit with a lower level award, however you may request a letter from your Course Coordinator confirming that you have satisfied the requirements for the relevant lower award; (b) if you do in fact exit with a lower level award and subsequently wish to resume your studies in the higher level course, you will be required to reapply for admission to that course in order to resume your studies. (c) if you intend to continue in a dual degree, you cannot exit with a single level award, but you may request a letter from the Course Coordinator confirming that you have satisfied the requirements for the relevant single award. Semester Year Two EDFX318 Professional Experience Birth to Two Years 1 2 Year Three EDFX319 Professional Experience Upper Primary Information last updated on 9 September 2014 Year Four EDFX413 Professional Experience Primary 4: Extended Reflective Practice EDFX267 Community Engagement (minimum 70 hours) Page 5 Course Enrolment Guide –Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) – Sydney 2015 Teaching in Catholic primary schools Pre-service teachers seeking accreditation to teach religious education in Catholic Schools (all primary teachers are required to teach religious education), will complete the following units: • • • • • THCT100 THBS100 THCT202 EDRE161 EDRE162 What Christian Believe - S2, Year 1 Introduction to the Bible - S1, Year 3 Christian Symbol, Ritual and Sacrament - S2, Year 3 Religious Education 1 - S1, Year 4 Religious Education 2 - S2, Year 4 and will be exempt from completing the two University Core Curriculum units (UNCC100 and UNCC300) but will complete the three Core Curriculum Program Units (EDFD167; EDFD261 and EDFX267). NSW/ACT Students seeking accreditation to teach religious education in Catholic Schools in NSW/ACT are required to complete an additional sixth unit within four years of commencing employment to meet accreditation requirements to teach in Catholic schools in these areas. Fourth year students may elect to over-enrol into the following unit: EDRE524 10 Educating the Young Child Religiously As this unit is not part of the BEDECP course requirements, it must be charged on a Non-Award feepaying basis. As a Non-Award unit, the fee must be paid upfront and cannot be deferred (not eligible for HECS). InPlace - Placement Management System for Education Students The Faculty of Education and Arts at Australian Catholic University (ACU) is implementing InPlace, a placement management system which streamlines registration, requests, and allocation of professional and community engagement placements. InPlace will provide education students with greater access to information relating to their Professional Experience placements. Students enrolling in Professional Experience units, with an EDFX, ADFX and SDFX code, will be able to register and access allocated placement records online. Key benefits from InPlace include: • • • • Online registration for placements Ease in updating professional/community placement information Ability to receive placement notifications online Access placement allocations online InPlace is based on Student Connect data. You will no longer have to fill forms manually for placements. In order that “best match” placements are made, please ensure that your personal details, including address and mobile phone number are current and up to date in Student Connect. To update your details log on to Student Connect (http://students.acu.edu.au/136953). Note: Mandatory documentation such as Working with Children Checks/Police Checks will still need to be lodged in person at your local Professional Experience Placement Office. Community Engagement Opportunities – Students will have the opportunity to participate in a 70 hour community engagement placement. Part-time and Out of phase students (ie: Students who wish to enrol in units which do not follow the sequence recommended in the program map) need to speak with the Course Coordinator/Course Advisor. Preservice teachers seeking employment in Catholic Primary schools All preservice teachers seeking permanent employment in Catholic primary schools are expected to be able to teach Religious Education. Information last updated on 9 September 2014 Page 6 Course Enrolment Guide –Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) – Sydney Information last updated on 9 September 2014 2015 Page 7 Course Enrolment Guide –Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) – Sydney 2015 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS New Working With Children Check The Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 for New South Wales requires all people in child related employment whether in paid employment or working as a volunteer to complete an online form at http://www.kids.nsw.gov.au/Working-with-children/New-Working-with-Children-Check. Students will then need to attend the Motor Registry to complete the final clearance. Students within the Faculty of Education and Arts NSW teacher education programs are to provide the Clearance Confirmation letter to the relevant administration officer within the Field Based Learning Unit. The Clearance Confirmation letter will be stored in accordance with the Act at the Australian Catholic University. All students assigned to field based learning activities must meet these requirements prior to confirmation of their placement and, having done so, are suitable for child-related employment. Students must carry the Working With Children Check every time they visit an Early Childhood setting as part of their University Course. International students must also obtain and present their relevant Police Check from their home country and from any other country/ies where they have been domiciled for twelve months or more in the last ten years. These Police Checks must be sighted and authenticated before students will be permitted to undertake a Professional Experience in any Early Childhood setting. Anaphylaxis Training All Pre-Service teacher education students in NSW will be required to complete a free, online module to be trained in anaphylaxis management before they undertake any professional experience in NSW public schools. The free, online module has been provided by the Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) and is available at http://etraining.allergy.org.au/. It can be completed in less than one hour and participants will receive a certificate of completion which they should present a copy to school Principals at the commencement of professional experience placements. A copy of the certificate should also be presented to the relevant administration officer within the Field Based Learning Unit. 5. Enrolment Now that you have read your Course Enrolment Guide, you can now enrol in units online for the 2015 Academic Year, using Student Connect (http://students.acu.edu.au/136953). For more information about the enrolment processes for both new and continuing students, please refer to the guides provided. Students should not enroll in more than a full time study load without consent from their course coordinator. Course Completions Students completing the final semester of their course are required to complete an Application to Course Complete (ACC) form (visit Enrolment Forms, http://students.acu.edu.au/154918) in order to be assessed for course completion.
