Treasures From Our Tradition
In the 1560s, the Council of Trent attempted to standardize the widely variant customs for the pastoral
care of the sick and dying. We had inherited a practice
called “extreme unction,” from the Latin words meaning
anointing at the point of death. The deeper tradition,
however, is about the prayer of faith that will heal and
restore the sick person, and is straight from the Letter of James. The Fathers went back to the beginning,
and while not discarding the “extreme unction” name,
made a plea for the proper use of this sacrament. As
soon as a person is in danger of death from sickness or
old age, they reasoned, the time for the sacrament had
already arrived.
As a result of this desire, the next ritual text for
anointing contained an innovation: a rite for visiting
the sick that included readings from scripture, psalms,
and prayers. Old customs fade slowly, however, and the
quality of pastoral care languished for centuries while
people delayed the celebration of a consoling and effective
sacrament, sometimes missing the opportunity completely. A priest ministering to a dying and unconscious
patient alone in a room has never been the desire of the
Church. Our tradition is far too rich for this sacrament
to be celebrated in such a diminished and ungenerous
manner.

The Baptism of the Lord
God does not withhold blessings and favor
from anyone. Jesus Christ is the Lord of all. How are
these blessings manifested for the Christian? At our
own baptisms, we were anointed with the chrism of
salvation and called to live as Christ did: as priest,
prophet, and king.
We know from Jesus’ life that these are not
worldly calls to power, riches, and prestige but rather
vocations of service in which we do not cry out or
shout aloud or attract attention to ourselves in any
dramatic way. Rather, as the reading from Isaiah
reminds us, we faithfully proclaim the word that will
achieve the end for which God sent it. For, as John
tells us today, “the victory that conquers the world is
our faith” (1 John 5:4).
GETTING FIT
The shoelaces are crusted with mud from an
afternoon on the playground. Laces on both shoes flap
in the wind as she runs to her father. “Daddy, can you
tie my shoes?” she calls out. And he smiles, noticing
the knots. “Sure.”
What parent is really “fit” to tie the shoes of his
or her child--and to aid in the other tasks and lessons
that are so much a part of the Christian call of motherhood and fatherhood? How many moms and
dads feel like calling out the way that John the Baptist preached to his followers prior to Jesus’ baptism? Speaking of Jesus, John said, “I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals”
(Mark 1:7).
SPECIAL GRACES
Through the grace of the sacrament of marriage parents are fit to teach their children not only
how to function in the day-to-day world (how to tie their own shoes!) but in the mysteries of faith for
which they are the first heralds for their children. Parents have the mission of teaching their children
about the faith and helping them to discover their vocation as children of God.
God the Father had special plans for the Son. At his baptism, Jesus was anointed by his Father to
bring salvation to all.
Likewise parents, grandparents, and all of us in the community of faith have special plans and
dreams for our children. We likely hope that they will go to college, prepare for a career, and work at a
job they like. We may hope that they will marry and raise children. Most of all we desire that our children continue to practice the Catholic faith and deepen their relationship with God. Logically, then,
as the family of faith, we must encourage some of our children to consider the vocation to ordained
priesthood and vowed religious life. With God’s grace, we are perfectly fit to do that.

the Sacrament of Confirmation, St. Julie’s along with
St. Jude’s in Westlake will be hosting classes at the end
of January.
Confirmation is the sacrament that completes the grace
we receive in Baptism. It seals this grace through the
Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit that we receive as part of
Confirmation. This sacrament also enriches are ability
to participate in the worship and apostolic life of the
Church. Like Baptism, Confirmation is received only
once in a lifetime.
Classes will be held from 1 pm 2:30 on six different Sundays at St. Jude the Apostle Church located at 32032 W.

This movie features Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings), Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) and country
singing superstar Trace Adkins. You’ll return home in
time to tuck your little ones and/or yourself in bed.
Saturday morning we will gather again, this time to reflect
on some of the themes of the movie: Am I enough? How
did I get in this mess, and why can’t I get it together?
Where do I turn for support and peace? Motherhood is a
beautiful mess. And, regardless of the season, it requires
balance and time management with the strength of a CEO!
Along the way, women often feel like they’ve lost themselves and wonder what God is doing in their lives or if
they are getting anything right.
This retreat seeks to help each mom discover (or remember) that she is the mom God chose for her children, and
she is a beautiful mom.
