Many icons depicting Jesus’ transfiguration bear the
Greek title Metamorphosis, a technical term also for
nature’s springtime transformation. Fittingly, this
Jubilee Year of Mercy coincides with the Lectionary’s
Year of Luke, for only Luke specifies Moses and Elijah
speaking about Jesus’ “exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem” (Luke 9:31). Israel’s exodus
liberated from slavery; Jesus’ exodus liberates from
sin’s living death of selfishness. Pope Francis suggests
that Lent’s prayer, fasting, and works of charity can
transfigure the world, if Christians translate Isaiah’s
challenge into our daily lived experience of Jesus’ lifegiving exodus by releasing those bound unjustly, setting free the oppressed, sharing your bread with the
hungry, bringing the afflicted and homeless into your
house, clothing the naked, not turning your back on
your own. “If you remove from your midst oppression,
and malicious speech . . . then light shall rise for you in
the darkness . . . you shall be like a watered garden, like
a spring whose water never fails” (Isaiah 58:9, 10, 11).
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Adult: When you were hurting how were you helped by the
compassionate presence of Jesus? How can you share this with
another who is hurting?
Youth: When were you scared and felt all alone? Who helped
you and showed God’s compassionate mercy?
NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS
First Reading -- The LORD God appears to Moses and directs
him to go and deliver the Israelites from Egypt (Exodus 3:1-8a,
13-15) or Exodus 17:3-7.
Psalm -- The Lord is kind and merciful (Psalm 103) or Psalm 95.
Second Reading -- We are not to grumble like the people with
Moses in the desert (1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12) or Romans
5:1-2, 5-8.
Gospel -- If you do not repent, you will all perish
(Luke 13:1-9) or John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42].

Sunday Morning Donuts and Coffee
Volunteering to host coffee and donuts on Sunday
mornings is a great way to be involved in the bustle of
parish life. It’s an opportunity for parishioners to donate their time and welcoming smiles to the church family queuing up for coffee or clamoring around the donut
trays. It can also provide a venue to showcase different
ministries (and maybe even recruit new members!).
Thank you for your help! For more information, contact
Sara Sera at 626.379.1522.

LENT 2016
THE CLOUDS
There was a time when I used to enjoy a good, ripping thunderstorm. But since the times that storms
flooded our basement and brought down large tree branches that took out the fence and barely missed the
house, I find myself in dread whenever clouds begin to darken the sky. Imagine the fear of Abram when
the birds of prey swooped down on the carcasses and a dark cloud enveloped him, and he fell into a trance.
Also think about the fear of Peter, James, and John when a cloud came over them on the mountain, and
a voice came out of the cloud. Peter babbled on, not knowing what he was saying.
THE PROMISE
These clouds, unlike the thunderclouds, preceded a promise. Abram received from the Lord a covenant: a
promise that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars, and that the land that he saw would be
for him and his descendants forever. We, too, are recipients of the promise. In the Transfiguration on the
mountaintop, Jesus was revealed as the Exodus to be accomplished in Jerusalem; in other words, Jesus’
death and resurrection would begin a new covenant with all people and with the Earth. “We await a savior,
the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:30), who will come again. We need not fear the clouds any more, for
in the words of Psalm 27, “I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait
for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.”
ADORATION CHAPEL
This peaceful, serene, and very comfotrable place to contemplate our Lord in the
Eucharist is open from 9:00AM to 9:00PM Monday through Thursday and 9:00 am
to 7:00 pm on Friday. You might want to consider signing up for a specific hour each
month or each week as a spiritual promise. http://stjulieschurch.org/adoration

Building your child’s self-esteem could help prevent abuse
Bullies and predators typically pick easy targets to victimize and abuse. This could be a child who has low self-esteem
or confidence. An abuser may use low self-esteem to forge a bond with a victim, or even to make a victim think that he
or she deserves abusive treatment. To guard against this, you can work on building self-esteem by teaching kids their
worth as children of God. For more tips, request a copy of “Balancing Discipline and Self Esteem” from
[email protected].
