My name is David Jeffries and I am the present Chairman of Bishop
No. 012
My name is David Jeffries and I am the
present Chairman of Bishop Bell
Governors. I spent most of my working
life in the Fire Service working in
Eastbourne, Horsham and, finally,
London. This was followed by a spell in
the Health Authority as a Fire Safety
Advisor.
I am married, have a son and daughter and four
grandchildren (one of whom is still at Bishop Bell School),
all living in Eastbourne. As well as being interested in
education my other main interest is singing. I am a
member of the Church Choir at St Mary’s, Old Town; I sing
with Eastbourne Choral Society and other local choirs when
time permits.
My experience as a Governor goes back over 40 years. As a
young parent I became a Governor at Motcombe Infant
School and Ocklynge Junior School. Whilst at Ocklynge I
was Chairman for eight years serving as a Governor there
for 34 years. I have been on the Governing Body of Bishop
Bell for 19 years, serving on a number of committees, and
held the position of Vice Chairman until I became the
Chairman exactly one year ago. I find the challenge of
governing exciting and interesting. Over the years there
have been many changes, so to see a school like Bishop Bell
flourish and move forward is very satisfying.
With the new Head Teacher, Mark Talbot, it is our vision to
take the School forward from good to outstanding. This is a
big ask, and we shall need everybody’s help and
cooperation to make this possible. Working together we
believe that Bishop Bell School has a great future.
I attended the Awards Evening last week...what a fantastic
evening, full to capacity and a great atmosphere. To see
the pupils collect their awards made all of us feel so proud.
So well done to everybody and I am looking forward to
attending the School’s Christmas events.

WHY ARE WE RAISING MONEY FOR KABUBBU?
A report from Mrs Nikdel:
As the only Church of England secondary school in East
Sussex, it is vitally important that we uphold and teach
those values that are so important to Christians in the
world today: values such as service, charity, forgiveness,
love and compassion. With this in mind, we work very
closely with Hailsham-based Christian charity, The Quicken
Trust. The charity is transforming the lives of people living
in poverty in the Ugandan village of Kabubbu.
25 Bishop Bell students and four members of staff are each
working hard to raise the £1200 needed to get them to
Uganda next July and to pay for their accommodation and
food whilst there. However, a further £10,000 needs to be
raised in order to pay for the project they will be working
on. The School is putting all of its fund-raising to this very
worthy cause this year including money raised on our mufti
days. Please dig deep and make our Christmas Celebration
Day the most successful mufti for Kabubbu. In the words of
a certain song, we all have a responsibility to ‘feed the
world.’
We will also be holding a Christmas raffle. Tickets will be on
sale next week, during break and lunch times, at a cost of
£1 for a strip. Prizes include ideal stocking
fillers, pampered gifts, gift vouchers and
pantomime tickets. The draw will be carried
out on the 17 December, so don’t delay!
HOMEWORK (CICS)
A report from Mrs Thomas:
Our teachers have been working hard to set good quality,
regular homework which is published for both parents and
pupils to view on Show my Homework. Our aim is to
always set homework that will extend your child’s learning
and that will support the progress that she/he makes.
However, we know that there are always ways in which we
can improve what we do.

CAROL SERVICE
Please join us for our Christmas Carol
Service on Tuesday 16 December,
commencing 7.30pm, at St Andrew’s
Church in Seaside. This is the Christian
highlight of our school calendar and a
really wonderful celebration, not just of Christ’s birth, but
of the talent of our pupils and staff. Please come along!
We are currently reviewing our homework setting
procedures and would like to gather the views of parents
and pupils to help us to make homework even better. It
would, therefore, be really helpful if you, as a parent, could
drop me a line to tell me what you think of homework at
Bishop Bell. You might like to comment on the amount of
work that is set, the quality of the work that is set, the
feedback that your child gets on his/her homework, the
way in which we publish our homework or anything else
you think might be helpful relating to this topic.

Congratulations to the Under

a
very
important game against The
Eastbourne Academy. The
final score was 48-10, with
the team finishing very strong
in the 4th Quarter. This was the first game of the season
and the boys are looking good to qualify for the County
Finals for the fourth consecutive year. Player of the
Match went to Enoch Quarcoo.
KICKBOXING CHAMPIONS
NETBALL NEWS
A huge well done to Aswen Nash, Year 7 pupil, and Amy
Bannister, Year 10 pupil, who recently competed in the
National Kickboxing and Kata championships. Aswen
achieved second in the Kata and third in the Points
Fighting with Amy coming second in her fight. Well
done!
EASTBOURNE YOUTH RADIO
A report from Rebecca Morley, Year 10 pupil:
On Wednesday 19 November, myself, along with four
other Media students, hosted The Eastbourne Youth
Radio Show at Sussex Downs College.
We left school at 12 noon and, to ease our nerves, we
practised our scripts on the way there. However, we
were quite sure that Mrs Stoner and Mr Grimes were
more nervous than us! Mr Talbot joined us at the
college just before we went live at 1.00pm and gave us
an encouraging and comforting talk. As well as hosting
the show and having lots of fun, we also gained some
valuable experience.
A report from Mrs Newnham-Reeve:
This week, the Year 7 Netball Team played away against
Cavendish. The girls, captained by Mia O'Hara, played
superbly, winning 7-0! There was some amazing
defending from Nellie Hannam and Lily Kitcher and some
great shooting from Mia O'Hara, Bronte Stevens and
Charys Baxter. The ball was played beautifully around
the court using the wings, Millie Vieweg and Emmie Bell,
whilst Ashlyn Weekes, centre, controlled the game from
the start. Player of the Game goes to Lily Kitcher,
nominated by the Captain, for her endless defensive
skills.
The Year 8 Netball team, captained by Hannah Frais,
played against a strong Cavendish team this week. The
girls had an amazing attitude and showed such
improvement working as a team throughout. The
Cavendish team nominated Katie Hunt as the Player of
the Game; congratulations Katie!
We had a great day and enjoyed everything about
hosting Eastbourne Youth Radio. It was a lot of fun!

BISHOP BELL’S AWARDS EVENING
A report from Mrs Nikdel:
“Wow! … The best yet! … The evening was brilliant!” Just
some of the superlatives used by those who attended last
week’s Annual Awards Evening of Bishop Bell School.
Councillor Warner tweeted that he was ‘immensely proud
to attend’ and praised the ‘inspirational speech’ given by
the evening’s guest of honour, Steve Brown.
Steve was captain of the
London 2012 Paralympic
Rugby Team. Although a
great sportsman in his
youth, Steve thought his
sporting days were over
after falling from a balcony in Germany in 2005. A gifted
and natural public speaker, Steve spoke of how he owed
his success to so many people and told our pupils that,
where he had coaches to guide him, they have teachers “teachers who will do anything to help you succeed” - and
where he had team mates, they have class mates. His
inspiring, humorous and optimistic speech was delivered in
a laid-back Jack-the-lad style that captivated everyone; this
man has charisma by the bucket-load.
He shared his
experiences in a matter-of-fact manner that displayed
absolutely no self-pity. “When I asked the doctor if I would
die, he said I might.” The emotions of the hushed audience
were palpable yet released in peals of laughter when he
added, “Don’t worry! I didn’t die!” This is the measure of
the man. He shared how important it is to be determined
to succeed and to realise that we can all do anything we set
our minds to. At the end of his speech, the whole audience
were on their feet applauding the person who, despite
personal highs and lows, has reached the pinnacle of
success when many of us would simply have given up.
The event, which is held at The Winter Garden, hosted 900
guests as they cheered and applauded the 340 plus pupils
who were awarded subject and Gold Awards. The Gold
Award is no mean achievement as pupils need to
demonstrate excellence, not only in academic progress but,
also, with 100% attendance and making a major
contribution to the School. Headteacher, Mark Talbot, is
rightly proud of the pupils at his
school. His speech outlined how
important “listening, accepting
differences, developing trust [and]
self-worth” is to him and how these
values will all be explored
throughout the year “within the
Christian framework of the School.”
