2015 Annual Report - Maryville Academy
FISCAL YEAR 2015 ANNUAL REPORT Caring for Children. Strengthening Families. Maryville’s mission is to help children and families to reach their fullest potential by empowering intellectual, spiritual, moral and emotional growth. Since 1883, Maryville has been dedicated to the preservation of the dignity of children at every age. Dear Friends, “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.” With these words, the accomplished author and poet Maya Angelou urged us to make life better for one another in difficult, sometimes painful, times. This Annual Report tells the story of many such rainbows that have been provided for Maryville’s children and their families. For many of our children and families, the road they have traveled before arriving at Maryville has been challenging and traumatic. Some need temporary support; others require more complex assistance. All seek personal attention and care—and each child and family is uniquely beautiful. For the youngest of Maryville’s children, our Crisis Nursery is a rainbow that protects them while providing much needed resources for their parents. The same can be said for our Casa Imani Therapeutic Residential Program and our Madden Shelter Program—two efforts that provide guidance and support to teenage girls who are parenting young children of their own. For grade school youth, our CYO and Golf Academy are rainbows that offer safe havens of sports for after-school and weekends. In the face of the social unrest in our city’s streets, programs such as these have never been more important. Our Therapeutic Residential Services for teens—provided at Casa Carino, Casa Salama, St. George, and St. Vincent de Paul homes—are rainbows that foster growth and development for youth who are away from their family homes. At our Jen School, students who have struggled in traditional settings can enjoy a full spectrum of learning opportunities that help them recognize their strengths and reach their potential. At Jen, they learn to see a rainbow of possibilities for the future. For children of all ages, our Children’s Healthcare Center is a rainbow that provides compassionate care for medically fragile children, while preparing their families to take their child home in the future. Each child is precious and deserves to have a rainbow in his or her cloud. And while the circumstances in their lives may be complicated, the path to establishing their safety and well-being can be remarkably simple. To quote a more whimsical author, Dr. Seuss: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Our children deserve attention, guidance and all the support we can provide. With you, Maryville is able to enrich the lives of children and strengthen their families. This Annual Report is our small thank you to each of you who has been a rainbow in the cloud for our children. Peace and all good, Sister Catherine M. Ryan, O.S.F. Executive Director | 2 Dear Friend of Maryville, In my years of work in the justice system, there are several things that I have learned. One of them is that a sense of belonging and the knowledge that you are supported and cared for is a vital part of healing, rehabilitation and belief in a brighter future. As the Cook County State’s Attorney, my office worked tirelessly to reform how juveniles were treated in the criminal justice system so that they had hope for tomorrow and possibilities for better lives. At Maryville, we want to see a future that is filled with opportunities for all the children and families in our care. We have been caring for children for over 130 years, and that is core to our mission. In our Therapeutic Residential Services and at the John & Mary Madden Shelter, we continue to offer home-like residences for youth who are in the care of DCFS. These children have suffered trauma and abandonment in their young lives and Maryville is there to help them heal and look forward. Today, we also have many vital, life-changing programs that strengthen families. • At the Crisis Nursery, we have expanded our parenting programs to include twice-monthly Parent Cafés, in addition to our Baby TALK and Lapsit classes. • At the Children’s Healthcare Center, prior to discharge, all of the parents are trained to care for their children once they get home. This is a vital part of our program to ensure that children are safe and parents are confident in their abilities to care for them. • At our Family Behavioral Health Clinic, which opened this year, we counsel children, adults and entire families on the challenges they face, as well as offer substance abuse counseling. • At Jen School, we work with community students and their families on behavioral and academic goals and provide resources to help them achieve those goals. • The Fatherhood Initiative and Strengthening Families programs help parents with child-related issues and empower them to be the best parents they can be. • Our CYO programs aim to keep children safe by offering them organized activities that teach teamwork and discipline, while providing them with a network of mentors and coaches. As our world continues to change, one thing remains constant here at Maryville. We safeguard the dignity of each person who comes to our door. We meet them where they are and through our programs, services and caring staff, we help them grow. We are grateful to all who join in our mission of raising, teaching and protecting our children. I thank you for your past help and ask for your continued support. Sincerely, Richard A. Devine Chairman 3 | For more than 132 years, Maryville has been committed to providing protection and guidance to children. As the world has changed, so have the needs of the families and children we serve. Maryville adapted by focusing on our community’s most critical issues. Today, our range of programs includes residential care, mental health services, healthcare and family support services, as well as a variety of educational and youth development offerings. More than 4,000 children’s lives were made better, safer and more joyful in Fiscal Year 2015 because Maryville was there for them. None of these things could happen without your support. You make it all possible—and for that, we are grateful. | 4 Caring for Children. 5 | Maryville Crisis Nursery Children’s Healthcare Center The Maryville Crisis Nursery in Chicago provides short-term care for children of families who are experiencing a severe disruptive crisis or a family emergency. Children ages newborn through six years receive round-the-clock childcare, up to 72 hours a stay. This safe and nurturing environment is designed to protect them from harmful experiences and the damaging effects of trauma. Issues that bring families to the Maryville Crisis Nursery include unemployment, parental illness or hospitalization, poverty and homelessness. The Maryville Children’s Healthcare Center (CHC) in Chicago is a long-term care facility that serves medically fragile children who may be technology-dependent (e.g., ventilator care, apnea monitoring). Clients range in age from birth to 21 years. At this location, Maryville is able to provide training for parents, caregivers and siblings to help them become more confident when attending to the fragile child’s specialized needs. The Center provides transitional care from hospital to home and offers respite for caregivers, giving them much needed breaks from demanding schedules. Sylvia came to the Crisis Nursery through a referral from As a newborn, Daniel had received a tracheostomy for a Madonna House, a homeless shelter in Chicago’s Lakeview congenital laryngeal cleft. He was admitted to Lurie Children’s neighborhood. She wanted nothing more than to gain her Hospital after birth. His mother had been sick and as a result, financial footing so that she could create a safe, secure his discharge from Lurie was postponed several times. At eight home for her two young sons. When Sylvia got her first job months old, Daniel was transferred to Maryville’s Children’s in a large retail store, the Nursery was able to help her Healthcare Center (CHC). Daniel’s mother remained gravely with childcare and referral services for affordable housing ill and after almost a year, she died. While Daniel’s health and long-term childcare options. Thanks to the assistance was stable, he did not have a full-time caregiver at home. of the Crisis Nursery, Sylvia now lives in an apartment Daniel’s grieving father, who was struggling to work and raise in Rogers Park with her boys and they are all thriving. With his other two children in the wake of his wife’s passing, was your support, the Crisis Nursery is available 24/7 to care overwhelmed. With the help of the incredible staff at the for children and strengthen families. CHC, Daniel learned to stand, walk, run, play peek-a-boo and share. Once his father was trained and confident in his ability to take care of Daniel’s medical, physical and emotional needs, we were thrilled to send him home to live with his family. Your support makes these family reunions possible. | 6 John & Mary Madden Shelter Therapeutic Residential Programs At our John & Mary Madden Shelter in Chicago, Maryville provides emergency shelter for young women, including pregnant and parenting teens. We offer the compassion and care they deserve at a time when their burdens are many and their options are few. Madden not only offers the girls a safe haven and a home-like setting, it provides therapeutic services, crisis counseling and psychological assessments. The clients admitted to the program at Maryville Madden Shelter have typically been involved in the child welfare system for a large part of their lives. At our Des Plaines and Bartlett Campuses, Maryville provides stable living environments for hundreds of children and adolescents who have been removed from their homes and placed in DCFS care. We offer the safety and support they need today and the guidance they need to thrive tomorrow. While children and adolescents live at Maryville, our highly-trained professionals work with them and their families with the goal of restoring family life whenever possible. Children and adolescents who are unable to return to their homes are prepared for long-term residential care, transitional living, foster care or independent living. Through individual, group and family therapy, children and adolescents are encouraged to communicate their feelings and confront their challenges in a safe and loving environment. We strive to empower our young people by encouraging them to participate in their treatment planning, and we individualize our service provision by keeping in mind each person’s unique challenges and strengths. Diamond, age 14, lived at the Madden Shelter for six months. As one of the youngest residents, she was defensive and unsure of herself and others. Diamond had no experience with a loving and supportive family. Several staff members worked closely with Diamond, encouraging and supporting her. As she built relationships at Madden, Diamond’s interest in school Scott, who had been diagnosed with autism, came to Maryville’s increased. She also became determined not to disappoint the Des Plaines Campus three years ago. He rarely left his room staff who had been motivating her to succeed. and did not have social or basic independent living skills. Over In May 2015, Diamond was placed with a wonderful foster family, who helped her remain in Madden’s neighborhood school and who nurtured her artistic abilities. One month later, Diamond walked into the Madden Shelter, proudly wearing her cap and gown. Accompanied by her foster mom, she hugged and thanked everyone for helping make her 8th grade graduation a reality. Diamond also gave everyone at Madden a priceless gift that day: She announced that she had been accepted to attend Chicago’s prestigious Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. Your belief in the potential of all of the Maryville children makes our work possible. 7 | time, with encouragement and care, Maryville staff worked with him to help him build relationships. Scott began to understand the importance of taking care of himself and communicating his needs to others. Scott expressed an interest in the Maryville Golf Program, one of the regular activities our children participate in. On the golf course, Scott readily interacted with his peers, and would even engage with coaches who offered to help him improve his game. Scott’s progress brought about the opportunity for him to move on to a new placement, where he lives more independently and continues to thrive. Your support of our mission of preserving the dignity of children at every age has made Scott’s success possible. Maryville Jen School Maryville CYO & Golf Academy The Maryville Jen School, located on our Des Plaines campus, provides specialized academic and vocational opportunities for boys in 5th to 12th grades who are experiencing academic, emotional, behavioral or cognitive challenges that can potentially limit their life successes. Maryville empowers young people through athletic programs that develop the whole person. These opportunities for teamwork and collaboration are designed to prepare them for the future. The Maryville CYO sponsors basketball, cross country, track and field, and cheerleading programs throughout the year, utilizing facilities in area schools, YMCAs and parks. Additionally, the Maryville Golf Academy teaches life lessons by providing basic golf-related skills and golf-related vocational training to children and adolescents. In 2015, more than 2,900 youth participated on Maryville’s CYO and golf programs. Classrooms are staffed with a Special Education Teacher, Instructional Assistant and Social Worker/Counselor. The Jen School curriculum is aligned with Illinois Learning Standards and meets public school district graduation requirements. The Jen School staff uses hands-on, alternative and experiential teaching methods in conjunction with traditional instruction methods. In 2015, the students participated in several new culinary fundraising projects under the supervision of Antoinette Tomasello, the Jen School chef. “The boys always benefit from coming into the kitchen to help with food preparation,” she said. “They learn to work as a group, follow a recipe and see a project from start to finish. We also see the pride our boys experience when people are able to buy and enjoy something they made themselves.” These offerings are positive alternatives to the many social ills that endanger our youth. With the well-being of children in mind, Maryville is planning to expand its athletic programs with new efforts in low-income communities. We are so grateful to the network of volunteer coaches and financial supporters who make this work possible. With your support, the Jen School helps students enjoy new opportunities for personal growth and achievement. “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” —Benjamin Franklin | 8 Strengthening Families. 9 | Family Behavioral Health Clinic Outreach Programs for Parents The Family Behavioral Health Clinic provides mental health services, substance abuse counseling, and DUI Risk Education and counseling to children and adults in the Chicago area. Our mission is to help heal individuals and families through the use of comprehensive evaluations and therapeutic counseling. We strive to improve family dynamics and strengthen the bonds of the family to pave the way to a better future. Offered as a Community Outreach Service of Maryville, the Family Behavioral Health Clinic can help with issues such as depression, anxiety, alcohol/drug abuse, and academic/ADHD testing. At Maryville, we recognize the challenges and stresses facing families today. The parents we must reach are juggling the needs of young children, surviving on limited incomes and facing housing challenges. Many of them do this without a familial or community safety net. For these reasons, Maryville offers a variety of Outreach Programs for Parents. Our goals are to help men and women embrace their roles as caregivers, to help them become more informed, and to support them as they nurture their families. In 2015, Maryville launched a new series of Parenting Classes at our Crisis Nursery in Chicago. We continued with the work of our Fatherhood Initiative, a program which encourages men to become more active and involved in raising their children. Tiana, age 20, came to Maryville’s Family Behavioral Health Clinic after having failed a number of court-mandated drug tests. She was in danger of violating her probation and was facing a year in prison. Tiana was also five months pregnant. The thought of her baby being born in jail frightened Tiana enough to motivate her to seek treatment for her substance abuse. During her FBHC assessment, Maryville also offers a program in Spanish called “Cultivando Valores de Dignidad y Esperanza en las Familias,” which translates into “Cultivating Values of Dignity and Hope in Families.” In 2015, this program offered presentations on subjects ranging from family nutrition to infant care to dialoguing with young adults. staff learned that a year earlier, Tiana had lost her eldest Maria, the mother of three children, said that her daughter to SIDS. The FBHC immediately connected Tiana favorite moment from the classes was the discussion of with a grief counselor to help her cope with that tragedy. how language affects relationships. She and her husband After several months, Tiana began to stabilize. An FBHC psychiatrist was able to diagnose us see things differently,” Maria said. “As we changed, we her illness and begin medication treatment. In 2015, Tiana saw our children blossom. This language of respect builds gave birth to a healthy baby girl. She continues to make healthy attitudes and responsibility.” Maryville recognizes progress with the support of FBHC staff. Your generosity the tremendous spiritual impact parents and guardians helps Maryville extend its reach with much-needed have on the children in their lives.
