Garden Club News
January 2015
Yard of the Month
By Garden Club Members
Start a Savory New Year...
The yard of the month for January is awarded to Tom and Sandi Illing
who live at 1106 Sugar Pine.
Do you speak Chervil? Have you worked with Rosemary lately? Or, have
you been spending Thyme elsewhere? If you’re starting the new year
without making their acquaintance, Lettuce not waste another moment!
The Illing’s moved into their home in Hidden Forest in 1979 and
they are thrilled to have received the award for their first time.
Come join the Hidden Forest Garden Club on January 28th and get
“herbally informed.” At this much-requested seminar, local herb expert
Diane Lewis, who is formally educated in horticulture and landscaping, will
introduce members and guests to lesser-known, as well familiar, varieties
of herbs. She will highlight those that will give pizzazz to your culinary
creations, be a versatile addition to your gardens, provide an irreplaceable
ingredient in your sachets and potpourris and make a beautiful dried
appearance in your wreaths and other decorative accessories. You will
also learn which herbs grow best indoors and which prefer an outdoor
location. In short, this meeting is “All About Herbs!”
Who:
What:

Where:
There is a big Oak tree and a Mountain Laurel in the front yard with
purple Lantana and dwarf Mexican Petunias in beds surrounding the
trees.
In the two flower beds at the front of the house the Illing’s have
planted Butterfly Iris, Blue Plumbago, Viburnum Suspensum and a
few Stella de Ora Daylillies. One bed has a Sago Palm and Lily of the
Nile with White Verbena and Red Diplandenia scattered between the
shrubs. Colorful White Verbena, Liriope and more Red Dipladenia
along with Creeping Ginny, Alysum, Sago Palm and Lily of the Nile
fill the other bed.

neatly pruned shrubs.
A big thanks and congratulations to Tom and Sandi for their hard
work. Please take time to drive by to see this beautiful yard! We hope
you’ll be inspired to “pretty up” your yard.

Security Report
Hidden Forest provides two security reports. One of them is based off of the sanantonio.gov “Calls for
service” report. These are not necessarily crimes, but times when someone has called for police services.
NOVEMBER
• Crimes Against Persons Calls: Disturbance Family Gun Involved-1
• Property Crime Calls: Burglary in Progress-1, Burglary Vehicle-2, Theft-4, Buglary-1 • Traffic Calls: Abandoned Vehicle-1
• Other Calls: Miscellaneous-1, Animal Related-1
The second report is from our security team, Blue Armor Security. They have done a great job monitoring
our streets. Please be sure that when you have a break in or other emergencies you call 911 first, then we’d
love for you to let our officer know so we can be aware. We get a report every day of what our officer saw on
his shift. (Even if it just says, “Monitoring Custer Pass and White Pine, nothing unusual to report.”)

Home Burglary Prevention Tips
• Use plenty of outside lights to help illuminate the dark areas on
your property.
• Don’t leave a “hidden key” outside under your doormat, over the
door, etc.
• Don’t allow bushes to grow too large so that they may provide concealment for burglars around windows and doors.
• Make your home look occupied at all times. Most burglars are
looking for unoccupied homes. If your home appears to be occupied, the burglar will usually look for other easy targets.
• When you’re away from home leave a radio or television on and
always leave a few inner lights on at night. If you will be gone for an
extended period of time, use a timer to turn interior and exterior
lights on and off.
• Invest in a good security system that comes with motion sensor
lights.
• Always double check doors and window locks before leaving for
the day and at night.
• After opening large gifts, do not place large empty boxes out at the
curb. This notifies people of what is in your home.
• Be cautious of the information you give over the phone to strangers. Example: A resident was selling a vehicle online and when a
potential buyer called and asked when he could test drive the vehicle the resident stated that it would have to be after the weekend because he was going to be out of town. When the resident returned
his home had been burglarized.
No home or neighborhood is immune to the possibility of becoming
a target of a home burglary. Most home burglars are amateurs looking
for easy targets. They’re looking for locations which present the least
risk of detection; the greatest opportunity for easy entry and maximum
potential for escape. They look for locations which appear to be unoccupied and unprotected. Locations that don’t appear to have adequate
locks and lighting, locations with open garage doors and bushes around
the location which provides easy concealment.
Unfortunately, burglars don’t have to look hard to find these locations.
Here are some tips to help prevent your home from becoming a target
of opportunity.
• Watch your neighbor’s property and note suspicious persons and
vehicles. Notify the local Police Dept and report a description of
the suspects and vehicles involved.
• Get to know your neighbors and keep an eye on each other’s
home.
• Install locks on sliding glass doors to prevent door from being lifted
out of the track.
• CLOSE your garage door, even when you are at home. Deactivate
the garage door openers when you will be gone for an extended
period of time.
