The event is organized by Department of Computer Science & I.T. of Amrita
School of Arts & Sciences, Kochi under Amrita Viswa Vidyapeetham, one of
India’s leading Research and Teaching universities. Through uncompromising
quality in the educational delivery our university has won us numerous laurels
and recognitions. University has been reaccredited with ‘A’ grade(with CGPA 3.4
on a 4 point scale) by NAAC. A review report of ministry of Human Resource
Department listed Amrita in the top category of all Indian universities. Our
international collaborations, achievements and recognitions are innumerable.
THE THEME OF THE WORK SHOP
Most of the research domains use the systematic and objective process of
gathering, recording and analyzing data for decision making. Data Mining
helps to deal with the study, analysis, scientific investigation, validity and
reliability of the findings. The data mining tasks in engineering are made
easier with the help of the open source tools. The focus of this workshop is
to provide an overview of data mining and its research challenges,
application of data analysis in the field of Bioinformatics and visualization
techniques used in various domains. This hands-on workshop provides a
platform for the participants to explore tools like Weka and R in detail.
Weka is a powerful machine learning software written in Java platform that
allows users to implement data mining algorithms quickly. This hands-on
tutorial on WEKA includes Overview of Data pre-processing Techniques and
Introduction to Data Mining Functionalities - Association Rule Mining,
Classification, Clustering and Visualization of results.
R is a versatile data analysis environment that has a broad application
spectrum in all science areas. One of the main attractions of using the R
environment is the ease with which users can write their own programs and
custom functions. R packages are available for the analysis of modern
biological and biomedical data sets, such as microarrays, next generation
sequencing data, genome annotations, networks, etc. The R software is
completely free and runs on all common operating systems. The workshop
provides an introduction into the R environment and mainly focuses on the
practical application of bioinformatics, demonstrating best practices for
managing and analyzing scientific data.
