“Most of the land is currently zoned

outdated and needs to be changed,”
Mayor McKinna said.

“The NSW Government’s latest

very ambitious and exciting.
Redevelopment
40kph Zone for Hornsby West Side
Hornsby Shire Council and the
Roads and Maritime Services have
introduced a 40kmh speed limit on
some roads through Hornsby’s west
side.
In a drive to improve safety, the
40kpm zone is an important step
to create a pleasant pedestrianfriendly retail and eatery
environment on the west side of
Hornsby’s town centre.
“With the popular new Hornsby
Aquatic and Leisure Centre located
on Peats Ferry Road along with a
strip of cafes, the west side has a lot
of pedestrians and this new speed
limit will help create a safer, more
relaxed environment,” Hornsby
Mayor Steve Russell said.
The 40km/h speed limit will be
signposted on Peats Ferry Road,
Coronation Street, Dural Street,
Dural Lane, William Street,
Ashley Lane, High Street, Station
Street and Jersey Lane.
The new speed limit is enforceable.

NEW PLANNING CONTROLS
FOR HORNSBY WEST SIDE
The revitalisation of
Hornsby’s west side
is dependent on the
introduction of
new planning controls.
The controls are part of
amendments to the Hornsby Local
Environmental Plan (HELP) and
Development Control Plan (DCP),
giving Council and the community
greater certainty about what
developments can take place.
According to Mayor Steve Russell,
these changes will breathe ‘new
life’ into Hornsby’s West Side and
allow it to become the ‘lively city
centre that residents deserve’.
Plans to revitalise Peat Island took
an important step at the December
Gosford City Council meeting
when councillors endorsed the
preparation of a planning proposal
that could see key land in the area
rezoned.
If this planning proposal is
eventually approved by the NSW
Minister for Planning, 18 lots
at Mooney Mooney (including
Peat Island) would be rezoned –
allowing the land to be used for
a mix of residential, community,
environmental, recreation and
employment development.
Gosford City’s Mayor Lawrie
McKinna said, “The Council
was very keen to see the
NSW Government owned land
“The concept envisages improved
community and emergency
facilities, foreshore access and
public recreation spaces as well
as a marina and local retail centre,
public wharf facilities and more
residential housing,” said Mayor
McKinna.
The preparation of a planning
proposal for this rezoning will
include public exhibition to ensure
that the community will have the
opportunity to provide formal input
into determining the appropriate
zones and development for the
land.
“Any issues raised during this
SURFHVVZLOOLQÀXHQFHWKH¿QDO
nature and extent of future zonings
and development,” Mayor McKinna
said.
By attracting new shops, cafes,
restaurants and housing into
the area, the planning controls
are designed to assist the local
economy, create jobs and provide
affordable living options.”
The community will see buildings
up to 25 storeys, but with strict
rules in place to preserve the
heritage and character of the
area.
Other noteworthy elements of the
controls include the provision for
green walls and roofs, a car share
scheme and wind effects’ reports for
buildings over 13 storeys.
The new controls apply to business

100 YEARS OF RED CROSS IN
HORNSBY COMES TO A CLOSE ...
Another much loved and valued part of our Hornsby heritage is about to
bite the dust.
The little Red Cross Shop, lovingly staffed by volunteers in Hornsby and
located at the Railway Station since 1914 will unceremoniously cease its
activity as of ‘the end of January’ under instruction from the higher end of
town.
The Red Cross Shop was originally situated on the West Side of Hornsby
as you entered the railway station, then was relocated to George Street on
the East Side, now has been relegated to a spot at the western entrance of
the soon-to-be-replaced overhead bridge (photo right).
The volunteers, who have lovingly stocked the little shop since 1914 with
knitted booties and babies’ layettes, preserves, Jams, hand crafted goods,
have been told to ‘go to the Turramurra shop’ if they want to continue their
community service. They are devastated. This move doesn’t suit as many
are elderly ...
We are all aware of the long-awaited re-construction of the George
Street Overhead Bridge and we welcome this. But after the new bridge
is built, to not re-establish our little Red Cross Shop ... what’s that about?
What is it with this current trend of the big end of town stepping on the
elderly, the volunteers, the women in our community and the small but
valuable community groups which are the fabric of our local culture?
I have recorded, through the pages of The Bush Tele, the sad loss of
dozens of these groups in a stealthy but growing trend, culiminating in the
past two years. Is it discrimination at its worst, attacking the very heart of
our community values?
Are we witnessing a modern trend towards the demise of our once valued
volunteer organisations? Has community-based fundraising been debased
to a regular deduction from your credit card? You tell me ... Ed.
Red Cross Hornsby Volunteer of 19 years, Jean, writes on
behalf of her fellow Volunteers:
Australian Red Cross Hornsby
CELEBRATING OUR
VOLUNTEERS
It would be unthinkable if the spirit which inspires our
residents to volunteer was lost. Volunteering is part of
Hornsby’s culture and enriches our community.
Make your New Year’s Resolution to Volunteer in 2015!
Last year, our roving Reporter Mick Gallagher discovered some of our
valued volunteers giving up their time for others.

to hearing impaired people throughout Australia who communicate
orally. For further info visit: www.shhhaust.org or ph: 9144 7586 (Hillview

“We would like to say a sincere Thank You to all our Friends
- Customers and acqaintances for your loyal support and
friendship over the years.
Red Cross is closing the Hornsby Shop at the end of
January 2015.
Despite the closure of the Shop, we volunteers will still
independently maintain our own Hornsby Red Cross Double
‘S’ Club and we hope to organise some fundraising activities
during the year.”

LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
Dear Bush Tele,
The 18th December edition of
your advertising sheet shows
a disturbing dichotomy in its
approach to Christmas.
Surely it would have been
appropriate to mention the
name of the season in the
context of the message you
placed on the front page. It
is Christmas time, after all.
Perhaps you have no
religion, maybe you have
nothing but a misplaced
secular world view. Or
might it be that you hoped
to offend no one by
excluding a word that at
worst would have offended
few, very few.
Above all, though, there is a sense
of material hypocrisy in your
omission.
Christmas is allowed a mention in
several of the paid advertisements
you clearly had no problem in
publishing. Indeed, two of those
ads go so far as to wish readers a
Merry Christmas.
What point then, other than
misplaced fears or an inappropriate
personal view, in not using that
word on your cover page? Are your
beliefs one thing but gathering in a
dollar another?
With best wishes for Christmas and
2015.
Charles Rawson, Wahroonga.
Hope you had a Merry Christmas,
Charles and a very happy New Year
to you too! Ed.

and increased population

With a massive increase in
population, Asquith will need
more community areas within
walking distance … Not less.
The Mayor and staff have
just returned from a residentfunded study tour of American
urban consolidation, and the
Mayor has publicly spoken
highly of the study tour and
what they have learned about
urban consolidation.
I’m sure it included ensuring
facilities are within walking
and easy distance. Public
spaces like Hornsby library is
full of students, children, the
elderly as well as the general
public and there are very
few public meeting places in
Hornsby especially with the
needless loss of the CWA
building in Hornsby Park.
Asquith is now going to be a high
density suburb and there already
are two high schools and numerous
primary schools within a couple of
hundred metres of the town centre.
The Storey Park project is a worthy
one as it is the homeground of
Asquith Rugby Leagues Club which
has a licensed club at Waitara.
The Hi-rise development north of
Hornsby will generate S 94 levy
of about $20K per household plus
the 9% infrastructure levy from
peoples’ rates and hopefully some
leagues club assistance. Thus there
is funding available for this muchneeded project .
One more very important point. It
is not the job of the council or staff
to destroy community groups by
taking away public facilities like
the CWA building. Their job is to
provide facilities by using the funds

Dear Bush Tele,
Season of Giving
So, in the spirit of Christmas giftgiving, Council has announced its
intention to sell off all its Council-run
child care centres.
This action is a gift to developers
eager to buy up increasingly scarce
land in key areas of the Shire as
well as a gift to the private Child
&DUHLQGXVWU\ZKLFKZLOOEHQH¿WIURP
the elimination of public competition
in Hornsby Shire.
But the giving doesn’t stop there.
Council’s announcement, if
implemented, will result in further
giving by the grandparents and
extended family members of the
children affected by Council’s
decision as they are increasingly
called upon to help with child care
no longer available to, or affordable
by, affected parents in the Shire.
Why is Council doing this?

Welcome to 2015 – I hope that you all had a wonderful
Christmas. I’m ready for another great year at Hornsby Shire
Council and look forward to working with my fellow Councillors
and staff to better serve the community. We have much to look
forward to, with the beginning of exciting projects such
as the rebuilding of the Hornsby Station Footbridge
and further improvements to the mall. January is an
exciting month in Hornsby Shire – I’ll be welcoming
40 new citizens to our beautiful area at a special
ceremony on Australia Day. There will also be
free events for the public to celebrate
Australia Day, with excellent live
entertainment in Hornsby Park and an open
day at Netherby Homestead, Fagan Park.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY
PRICELESS
PEARLS
By Ralph Estherby
I’ve taken the opportunity to watch a
couple of sunrises in the last few days.
The first one involved a bit of planning
but the others have just happened
because I like to get up early. Like a
lot of people I have been enjoying a
holiday and have found myself with
time to spare and my normal pattern
of life interrupted and so I have taken
the opportunity to sit for a while and
watch the sun peak over the horizon
and then make its way high into the
sky.
My first sunrise of 2015 was New
Year’s Day as we have started a bit of
a tradition of heading to the beach to
watch the dawning of the new year…
this principally flowed out of the fact
that we had experienced too many
‘dodgy’ new year’s celebrations which
were well and truly underwhelming
and we wanted to mark the new year
with something special. It turned out
to be a beautifully clear morning with
the brightness of the sun making its
presence felt, giving all who were
observing a sense of anticipation for
what was ahead.
But this morning’s sunrise was
different… The sky was not clear and
there wasn’t a particularly good reason
to be up and about but as the sun
began to rise that all changed. The
fact that the sky was cloudy lead to an
incredible light show filled with colour
and significant beauty but the mix of
cloud and sun also gave rise to dark
shadows and ominous possibilities.
Over a period of about 15 minutes I
was treated to a display which could
be described as breathtaking and it
made me wonder what this day would
bring. If there hadn’t been any cloud
in the sky it would have been different
but those obstacles gave the sun an
opportunity to display its power and
beauty in spectacular measure. Shafts
of light breaking through the clouds;
faint pink hues changing to bright
yellow; and finally the full force of the
sun completing the picture.
As we head into 2015 I am not sure
what your year holds: I do not know
if it is going to be smooth sailing or
if there are storms ahead. This could
be the best year of your life or it could
be a challenging one but I do know
one thing – the sun will keep on rising
and… if you will allow it… the Sun of
Righteousness (Jesus) can bring colour
and dynamic power into your life.
Here is a promise for the dawning
of the New Year… “to you who fear
My name The Sun of Righteousness
shall arise With healing in His wings”
(Malachi 4:2)

HELP FOR THE
HOMELESS
A new service assisting homeless men and
women was officially opened in Hornsby on
Monday 15th December 2014.
The Northern Sydney Homeless Early
Intervention and Prevention Service is a joint
partnership with the Northern Sydney Youth

on early intervention for those at risk of
homelessness.
The two services being opened are part of the
Going Home Staying Home reform.
Matt Kean MP helped officially open the
centre saying he was delighted to see further
funds spent to help prevent homelessness in
the Hornsby Shire. “I want to thank the Early

key role the organisation is playing in this

He even has a ride-on mower for those bigger jobs.

A local Landcare group is in a flap over a pair of Powerful Owls.
Jillian Nolan, a keen bird watcher and volunteer with Wahroonga Waterways
Landcare, noticed the owls as she walked through Wahroonga Estate.
“They were sitting in a tree not far from me,” she said. “The baby was as big
as its parent, but very fluffy and curious.”
Group Administrator of the Landcare group, Frances O’Brien, quickly
arrived to look at the owls.
“This is great news,” she said. “We’ve had unconfirmed sightings and other
evidence of Powerful Owls on the Estate before, but this is the first time we’ve
been able to photograph the owls for some years, and the first confirmed
sighting of a fledgling.”
Powerful Owls are considered threatened in New South Wales. These sightings
give the species some welcome news, as they demonstrate that the owl is still
safe in the conservation zone and breeding.
Wahroonga Estate is located between Pennant Hills Road and Fox Valley Road.
It includes the San Hospital, the Adventist Aged Care Village, and 34 hectares
of conservation bushland. Although privately owned, it is open to the public.
“Wahroonga Waterways Landcare is heartened to see the owls have chosen
Wahroonga Estate as a base,” Ms O’Brien said. “Here we can monitor them,
and ensure a safe space for them to breed and rest.”

Kadance

old Jack Russell x Wirey Terrier who
would suit a family with older children (8+ years).
Founder of Doggie Rescue, Monika Biernacki, said, “She is social

attention to passing cars but can bark at dogs. She loves to run! She
also enjoys chilling out for some pats & cuddles. She is easy to be
picked up by strangers. She knows sit. She has springy long legs so
needs secure fencing.”

HORNSBY ASQUITH PODIATRY
There are several causes of heel pain the most common being PLANTAR FASCIITIS
Plantar Fasciitis is simply inflammation of the big strong band on the bottom of the foot
(the plantar fascia). Symptoms usually begin as a "stone bruise" type of pain increasing to
chronic pain especially first thing in the morning or after rest. Sometimes there may be a sense
that something tears or "gives" in the arch of the foot during sport.
This kind of pain is easily treated by realigning and supporting the foot and leg which reduces
the trauma allowing the injured foot to recover.
FOOT AND LEG PAIN prevents patients of all ages from enjoying daily exercise such as
walking thus creating a vicious cycle.
Pain - no exercise - weight increase - more pain. Results in High blood pressure, Diabetes,
Joint abuse, surgical replacements etc
An easy mobility program is specifically devised for individual patients to break the cycle and
return to a healthy lifestyle.
