ASQUITH LEAGUES CLUB BECOMES MAGPIES WAITARA
“There are many benefits
to linking the name of
the venue to its physical
location,” said Ray Agostino,
General Manager of
Magpies Waitara. “This
is the reasoning behind
the decision to change the
trading name of the licensed
premises from Asquith
Leagues to
Magpies Waitara.”

Kokoda Secret examines Hutchison’s career
from the time he joined the Militia as a
regimental cadet at the age of 16 in 1929 until
his retirement in 1963, during which period
his career mirrored the development of the
twentieth-century australian army. Using
ground-breaking research, extensive private
papers and detailed interviews, this unique
biography provides a compelling portrait of
Colonel Ian Hutchison and a definitive study
of battalion command in war and peace. In
particular, it is a must-read for anyone interested
in the truth of the Kokoda Campaign of 1942.
It is also of immense significance in shedding
new light on other key issues and campaigns
including the Syrian Campaign, the aitapeWewak Campaign, the War Crime Trials in
New Guinea, and the static phase of the Korean
War. over thirty years after Hutchison’s death,
this book sets the record straight, and gives this
great australian the credit he deserves.

FRIDAY NIGHTS
Colonel Ian Hutchison was a revered soldier
and one of the great figures in australian
military history. as Commanding officer of the
2/3 australian Infantry Battalion in the Battle
of Eora Creek on the Kokoda Trail, he was
thrust unexpectedly into command yet inspired
his men to a smashing victory which was the
turning point in the Kokoda Campaign. He
continued to lead in further victories at oivi,
Soputa and Sanananda. In this important book,
we learn the truth about the Battle of Eora
Creek Ridge (‘the Lost Battlefield’) and why
the magnitude of the victory has been covered
up until now. What is the secret of Eora Creek
that still haunts the Kokoda Campaign and
is of national and international significance?
We also learn of the influences and events
which shaped Hutchison and prepared him for
command in both the Second World War and
the Korean War.

MAYOR'S MESSAGE
DYAN TAI
As you would be well aware many public inquiries were held last
week regarding the state government’s Fit For The Future process.
ROSIE CATALANO & MORE
At the Parramatta Inquiry, I supported our position that the suburbs
of Epping, North Epping and Carlingford should stay within Hornsby
Shire rather than be absorbed into the larger Parramatta Council.
We are proud of these suburbs, and want to do our best for the
residents and business owners who live and work there.
STREET FOOD
At the Pymble Inquiry I presented our view of the proposed
amalgamation of Hornsby Shire Council with Ku-Ring-Gai Council.
We believe this proposal is the best way forward for this region of
Sydney. Financially, Hornsby Shire Council is in great shape and is
one of the best managed Councils in the state. In my opinion merging
with Ku-Ring-Gai Council will bring about significant benefits for our
residents in the future.
If you would like more detail on these
presentations please visit
www.fitforthefuture.nsw.gov.au
I look forward to keeping you updated
on these very significant issues.

MAGPIES WAITARA GRAND OPENING
Story & photo by Cllr Mick Gallagher of Mt Colah
Magpies Waitara, conveniently located adjacent to Waitara Station in
Alexandria Parade, has completed the first stage of its Master Plan at a
cost of $5 million.
Along with our Mayor Steve Russell, and Councillors Nathan Tilbury and
Gurdeep Singh, I attended the official opening of the 2016 completed
Stage 1 on Tuesday 9 February.
Magpies Waitara President, Brian Fulmer of Hornsby Heights, addressed
the gathering giving praise to all those involved with the renovations. He
also acknowledged the many community groups present and Life Members
of Magpies Waitara – George Fretus, John Davis, Harold Blinkhorn and
Jack Lawton.
Magpies Waitara patron Matt Kean (our State MP for Hornsby) spoke
highly of the club’s community spirit and how he had visited the club for the
first time to have a drink with his father in 1999, on attaining the age of 18.
Club Cheque Presentations to the Community
Mappies certainly showed its community spirit at the function by presenting
cheques of $2,000 each to representatives of the following groups: H/K
Women’s Shelter – President John Lockyer, Studio Artes – Lynne Slevin,
Hornsby Heights RFB (Rural Fire Brigade) – Capt Stewart English, KYDS
(Ku-ring-gai Youth Development Scheme) – Mark Northern & Felicity
McDonnell, and Hornsby PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club) –
Mgr Daniel Allars.
Magpies Waitara GM Ray Agostino of Cowan presented flower bouquets
to Magpies Cindy Bunyan (Assistant GM Magpies Waitara) and Katie
Shuttle (ABEO Architects) for their contributions to the project.
President Brian Fulmer invites all members and visitors to view the
club and try the new restaurant ‘Lucky Magpie Asian Cuisine’ offering
authentic regional specialties from Taiwan, Shanghai and Hong Kong
or The Pavilion an indoor / outdoor casual dining area.
“Experience the new Pavilion and the friendly customer service from our
staff who are there to make your visit an enjoyable experience,” said Brian.
Ray Agostino, General Manager said, “We have just had our busiest
January on record. A great result considering it was also the wettest
January on record in the local area.”
Design of the Master Plan was based on feedback from members
and residents, as well as research from the Census, Council and
PlanningNSW.
Stage 2 renovations are expected to commence later this year.

Ku-ring-gai Council is ranked 6 out
of 152 NSW Councils for the size
of its operating surplus, according
to specialist accountants for local
government.
LG Solutions analysed NSW
councils’ 2014-2015 financial
data to produce a comparison of
operating surpluses.
Ku-ring-gai’s surplus was $13.460
million before capital expenditure.
Ku-ring-gai’s proposed merger
partner Hornsby Shire Council
was ranked even higher in the list,
coming in third with an operating
surplus for 2014-2015 of $17.142
million before capital expenditure.
Both councils were declared ‘unfit’ by
the NSW Government last year and
are being pushed to forcibly merge.
Camden Council, which the
government declared ‘fit’ and not
required to merge, came in at 139th
on the list, with an operating deficit
of $4.194 million.
Mayor Cheryl Szatow said, “This
report disproves the financial logic
being applied to our merger.”

Rabbit-owners Urged to Inoculate
their PETS
Local rabbit-owners are being asked by the state government to protect their pets before feral rabbit
control programs begin.
The call comes ahead of a planned control program using baits starting in
April and finishing at the end of May.
The baiting program will target feral rabbits in bushland reserves and parks
across Ku-ring-gai and other northern Sydney council areas.
Ku-ring-gai Mayor Cheryl Szatow urged owners of pet rabbits to heed the
Sydney Airport
government’s advice to get their pets
inoculated before baiting begins.

THE FORCE AWAKENS …
ASQUITH STRIKES BACK
Steve Atkins of Asquith Bowling
Club writes:
One of the annual highlights
on the Men’s Bowling calendar,
Gia Ginye Day* was recently
contested between 36 members
of the Asquith and former Berowra
Bowling Clubs.
This fun social day rekindles
the long standing rivalries when
the two clubs were bowling
neighbours and pits players
who these days are mates
and teammates who represent
Asquith. Local charities profit
from this day of mateship,
sledging and good humour with an
occasional beverage going down
along the way.
This year it was the Berowra boys
who led after the morning round of
games leading comfortably by
19 shots at the lunch interval.
Then it was Asquith’s turn to
apply some pressure erasing the
deficit and leading overall by
4 late in the day. Berowra fought
back and coming into the last
end of the day it was all square.
However, Asquith stood tall and
seized the moment, to win the end
by 2 shots, grabbing the trophy
back from Berowra.

What the LOCALS
are saying ...
Dear Bush Tele,
Berowra Heights and Berowra
residents will miss Jason Gower
(Paul Jones Real Estate)
“looking after the people”.
I was touched and moved by his
honesty and kind advice. (A few
years ago I asked him to put my
property on the market.)
Thank you Jason – “Looking after
the people”
Berowra Heights Resident
Dear Bush Tele,
Thank you, Bush Tele, for your
recent coverage of the opening
of the new playing field at
Seymour’s Creek.
On the opening day, someone
asked me why I had maintained
my involvement with sport for over
fifty years, and the answer to the
question is that I would far prefer
to see young people involved in
an activity that is sociable and
enjoyable than in some of the other
activities that lead to more antisocial behaviour.
In Australia, sport is part of our
culture. That does not mean
that it has to compete with or
eliminate other cultural and
constructive activities, such as
the arts, which also play an
important part, although smaller in
numerical terms.
We should, however,
recognise that the hundreds
of volunteers who turn out
each weekend and at other
times, to organise, coach,
umpire and cater for these kids
are providing a major part of
our local area’s youth policy.
They deserve recognition
when volunteer functions
are organised and when our
Council assesses what it can
do to support them.
Above all, organised sport
needs facilities, created and
maintained at a level that
keeps pace with the growth of
the community and our Council
should never lose sight of this.
It is interesting to contemplate
what could have been bought
with the levy that was imposed
on ratepayers to purchase a
hole in the ground at Hornsby!
Cr Nathan Tilbury deserves
great credit for pushing for
new sporting facilities.
The high rise jungle being
currently created in our district
is going to house kids, who
will want to play sport and who
must be given the opportunity
as part of the preservation of
our great Australian way of life.

What’s the latest news at Marketplace Shopping Centre
Berowra Heights?
Contrary to popular belief, the Auction sign erected last week refers
only to Adrian Curran’s Berowra Hardware and associated land.
Yes, it is up for Auction on 18th March.
The former IGA section of Marketplace Shopping Centre is being
cleaned out, repaired and painted, ready for new tenants. The owners
of the large 1,500m2 retail area, the Hourigans, are interviewing
prospective new tenants as I type. The shops at Marketplace are
open for business and invite you to pop up and say ‘hello’.
Rumours can affect local businesses. So, if you hear something
on the grapevine, please do some research.

Hills Grammar Celebrates Alumnus …
Joel Edgerton
T
he inaugural ‘Hills Grammar
Original’ Alumni Award was
recently presented to Joel
Edgerton from the Class of 1991.
The award recognises a past
student’s outstanding contribution
to the community in his or her
field of endeavour – it celebrates
excellence, integrity and service.
Edgerton was a foundation student
of The Hills Grammar School and
took advantage of every theatrical
opportunity possible until he
graduated and moved into the
University of Western Sydney’s
Drama School. With a string of
theatre and film performances to
his credit, Edgerton has now added
writing and directing to his bio with
his latest box office success,
The Gift.
“It was such a thrill for the school
community to have Joel and his
parents attend Presentation Day.
We didn’t know until a week or
so out that he would be able to
be there in person,” explained Liz
Pellinkhof, Director of Marketing,
Enrolments and Community
Relations. “We kept it a secret until
Joel came to the stage to accept his
award. The Vice Captains Isabel
Tegel and Patrick Corrigan were
beside themselves!”
Edgerton engaged the students
and parents with some memories of
school days, thanked his creative
arts teachers, apologised to the
Maths staff and, in reference to
his film, The Gift, asked the
students to “be kind to each other
– it’s important, not difficult and
makes such a difference to those
around you.”
A plaque will be set into a pathway
at Hills Grammar which will become
the Walk of Excellence as future
recipients are added.

PEARLS
DEMENTIA ON THE RISE …
BUT HELP IS AT HAND!
By Ralph Estherby
2:35am, 8:00am, 2:15am, 10:00am
and 1:15am
These are the starting times of my next
5 days and I am trying to make a plan
so that I am not totally wasted by the
end of the week…
You are probably aware that we need
sleep to survive and at different ages
we need different amounts. People
over 65 years old need 6 hours sleep,
from 19-55 it is 8 hours, from 3-18
it is 10 hours and babies top the list
needing 16 hours sleep each day.
If we fail to get enough sleep we can
really start to suffer…you start by
feeling groggy or foggy but it quickly
escalates as your ability to retain
or process information is inhibited.
Sleep deprivation is a major cause
of accidents with events such as
Chernobyl, the Exxon Valdez oil spill
and the meltdown at Three Mile Island
all citing lack of sleep as a contributing
factor. Being overtired has been
equated with the same impact as
being over the legal limit of alcohol.
It increases depression, causes skin to
age quicker, makes you forgetful, and
can make you put on weight. Maybe
it’s time to go to bed!
There are a number of reasons people
find it hard to get to sleep: our minds
are racing after the stress of the day;
we have eaten or drunk too many
stimulants; we haven’t given our minds
the opportunity to wind down; or there
can be a significant number of medical
reasons for it.
It is hard to sleep if you don’t feel safe,
it is hard to sleep if you have too much
on your mind, and it is hard to sleep if
you are anxious.
One of the ironies I find is that when
I need to go to sleep because I have
to meet an early appointment I often
struggle to get to sleep because I start
fixating on the fact that I have to get
to sleep and therefore I don’t sleep
because I am overthinking it! I am sure
that we have all had nights like that.
So I have a choice – do I stay up until
2:35am and then try to put in a second
full day’s work, or do I head to bed
at 8.30pm and try to catch about half
the sleep I really need? Maybe there
will be time for a ‘Nanna Nap’ in the
middle of the day? Maybe I should
stop thinking about it and just close my
eyes and relax? Now that’s a plan!
“I will both lie down in peace, and
sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make
me dwell in safety.” Psalms 4:8

More people will be
living with Dementia
in 2016 than ever
before, but with
the right support,
you can maintain a
quality of life.
In the Gosford,
Hornsby and
Ku-ring-gai state
electorates there
is estimated to be
4,450 people living
with dementia,
which is expected
to increase to an
estimated 4,850
people by 2020 and
9,450 by 2050.
The figures,
prepared for
Alzheimer’s
Australia NSW
by Deloitte Access
Economics, show the number of people estimated to be living with
dementia in NSW has risen to almost 115,000. That figure is expected
to continue to rise to more than 128,500 people by 2020 and an
estimated 272,000 people by 2050 if a cure or significant medical
breakthrough is not found.
Alzheimer’s Australia NSW CEO The Hon. John Watkins AM said:
“Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, after heart
disease, and there is no cure … but there is hope.”
Dementia can be a very isolating, confusing, confronting and difficult
disease to live with, but you are not alone. There is a whole range of help.
A great starting point is calling Alzheimer’s Australia NSW on the
National Dementia Helpline on 1800 100 500.
“Our professional and compassionate staff can talk to you about what is
happening, give you advice and strategies for how to manage now and
into the future, and point you in the right direction for further support
and other services – all for free,” said Dr Watkins.
A new website Living Well with Dementia, developed by Alzheimer’s
Australia Vic, contains a whole range of information and tips on how to
live well with dementia, and includes personal stories.
To find out more and to access support, call Alzheimer’s Australia NSW
on the National Dementia Helpline on 1800 100 500, Monday-Friday
during business hours. You can access the Living Well with Dementia
website at www.livingwellwithdementia.org.au.
Alzheimer’s Australia NSW is the charity for people with dementia
and their families and carers. As the peak body, it provides
advocacy, support services, education and information.

LIONS DISTRICT GOVERNOR PRESENTS FELLOWSHIP
Steven Su of Hornsby Lions writes:
At the meeting of the Lions Club of Hornsby held at the Event Cinema Hornsby Function Room, special guests were
District Governor Lion DG Elvio Munzone and his wife Lion Gae and their Japanese exchange student Ricky, also
Kathie Comb, Editor of The Bush Telegraph Weekly, and Chris Comb.
Kathie Comb, was presented with the Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) for her Humanitarian Service to the Community.
Lion Pauline Henebery said, “Kathie has been the Editor of The Bush Tele since it began 30 years ago, and has
supported The Lions Club of Hornsby, as well as many other local organisations, throughout that time.”
Pauline continued to outline some recent work carried out by Lions International, saying, “The funding arm of Lions
which is used for emergencies and catastrophes made available US$300,000 within 24 hours of the horrific earthquake
in Taiwan.”
Pauline then asked District Governor Elvio Munzone to present the Melvin Jones Fellowship to Kathie. Elvio thanked Kathie for what she has done for
the community.
“In honour of Lions’ global impact, Kathie Comb’s name will join the list of all Melvin Jones Fellowship recipients which are displayed on a screen in the
Lions Club International Foundation Room (LCIF) at the International Headquarters in Chicago,” DC Elvio said.
DC Elvio also presented Kathie with a Letter of Congratulations from LCIF President Joe Preston.
On receiving this honour, Kathie said, “I feel overwhelmed by the presentation of this Fellowship from my friends in Lions, some of whom I have known
for many years. Lion Barry Palmer first introduced me to Hornsby Lions in 1997 and The Bush Tele has remained a ‘friend of Lions’ since that time.”
Kathie went on to say that as long as Lions keep doing the wonderful things that they do,
The Bush Telegraph Weekly will be there to spread their good news throughout the community.
“I am never ceased to be amazed by the Lions’ ability to mobilise funds and allocate resources,
almost immediately, for the benefit of those in need.”
“If anyone is in need, Lions is there,” said Kathie.
Kathie also commended Lions’ Editor Steven Su for his regular literary contributions to
The Bush Tele.

Mick G - NO MORE GST
Over recent weeks we have seen Hornsby Shire Councillor Mick
Gallagher campaigning in Hornsby in readiness for the upcoming 2016
Federal Election.
With his slogan NO MORE GST, Mick says that the issue has not gone
away and if elected to the Senate Mick says he shall ensure it stays
away, whether we have Liberal or Labor government.
“The GST is a lazy, unfair, unpopular way for both Liberal & Labor Parties
to tax the people for more money to waste. I ask all voters to make up
their own list of government misspending, so why would you give them
any more, no matter what form of tax?” says would-be Senator Mick.
Mick is forming his own Independent NO MORE GST team with
Mick as the leading Senate candidate. He has been busy signing up
new members so that he has the required minimum number of 500
members to have the group name registered.
“If you are against any future
increase of the GST then I
encourage any fairdinkum
voter to sign up now as a
free member,” says Mick.
“Senator Mick” can be seen
at various times campaigning
in Florence Street near the
railway station pedestrian
bridge. Why not stop by and
have a chat on this important
issue of taxation, an issue
that affects us all?

PET OF THE WEEK
MEET … LIL CHRISSY
Lil Chrissy is a super friendly happy 16
week old Boxer cross Staffy.
She is very social with other dogs and
already walks well on lead. She can be
snatchy with treats so would only suit
older children. She is a sweet girl who is
looking for a gentle home. She weighed
9.5kg when she came from the pound
and she has a smooth coat. We expect
she might grow to a small boxer size.
She comes with puppy vaccinations,
wormed, heartworm free, with a
desexing voucher and microchipped.
Her adoption cost is $500. For further

Where’s the FUN in
Summer Gone?
Anyone who grew up in
Australia in the 70s and 80s
usually has fond memories of
long, hot summers and hours
of fun in the backyard running
through a sprinkler, under a
hose or sliding down a Slip ‘N
Slide.
But most kids these days are
missing out.
In a recent survey, less than
10 per cent of respondents
said they were using their hose
or sprinkler for fun activities to
help them and their families
cool off. South Australians
are the most likely to be
cooling down under the
sprinkler, followed by
households in NSW.
The survey of over 2,000 people was conducted by garden hose
specialists Hoselink, to discover the changing hose habits of Australians.
According to Tim Kierath, founder of Hoselink, an increasing amount of
Australian families are opting to stay indoors thanks to the proliferation of
entertainment technology and other factors such as home-comforting air
conditioners. But there is also another, more welcome, motive.
“The hose habits of Australians have changed since the last drought
when severe water restrictions were put in place,” said Tim. “While
indoor entertainment sources may be part of the reason, Australians are
becoming more environmentally aware and water conscious.”
The survey also discovered that more than 30 per cent of Australian homes
are using at least some recycled water to water the garden, with Victorians
(40%) and Queenslanders (35%) topping the list for the use of recycled water.
“It’s great to see that Australians are increasingly embracing the use of
recycled water,” said Tim. “New subdivisions that offer recycled water
will see a gradual increase in this important initiative.”
Hoselink is home to Australia’s trusted no-burst hose fittings and has a
range of products to make watering more enjoyable, including hoses,
fittings, hose reels, sprinklers, sprayers and accessories. For more
information, visit www.hoselink.com.au.
Survey findings
• South Australians are least likely to be using recycled water – 84% said
they don’t use any. Victorians are the most likely (40%), followed by
Queenslanders (35%).
• Less than 10% of Australians are using their hose or sprinkler for a fun
way to cool off in summer.
• Sprinklers are still popular tools to water the garden – 25% always use
one and 43% sometimes use one.
• We’re a nation of dirty cars! Only 11% of Australians wash their cars
once a week and 55% wash their cars less than once a fortnight.
• People in SA and VIC are more likely to take their cars to the car wash.
• WA is a State of lawn lovers – 92% are spending time at least twice a
week watering their gardens.
• Men in regional areas tend to have longer hoses than their city
counterparts!

NSW Grant for Our
Lady of the Rosary
Cathedral Waitara
P
arishioners at Our Lady of the Rosary (OLR) Waitara now have a
new AV television integration display following a grant from the
NSW Government.
The grant of $16,590 was awarded to OLR by Hornsby State Liberal MP
Matt Kean under the NSW Community Building Partnerships program.
“It’s fantastic to be able to help and support our Catholic Parish which
is an integral part for many in our local community,” Mr Kean said. “I’m
sure the upgrade will be of great use to the church with many Lent and
Easter services over the next six weeks.”
Funding has allowed the church to upgrade and integrate the AV displays
in the Cathedral with existing equipment. The upgrade will benefit weekly
church services and school children visiting for special Masses.

$500,000 GIFT FOR GOSFORD
REGIONAL GALLERY
A search for a new home for the Hornsby Bestowed Collection began two
years ago when plans for a regional gallery at Hornsby failed to materialise.
A collection of artworks valued at over $500,000 has been donated to
Gosford Regional Gallery by Hornsby Arts Council, more than doubling
the value of Gosford City Council’s Art Collection.
Mayor of Gosford City, Councillor Lawrie McKinna made the surprise
announcement to guests at the exhibition opening of The Gift at Gosford
Regional Gallery last Friday night 5 February 2016.
The Gift showcases The Hornsby Bestowed Collection, which features work
by major Australian artists including John Coburn, Elizabeth Cummings,
Shay Docking, Elwyn Lynn, Tony Tuckson and Margaret Woodward.
It was announced that all works will remain permanently in the Gosford City
Council Art Collection at the close of the exhibition on Sunday 3 April 2016.
The Gift was presented to Mayor McKinna by artist Ursula Laverty, who
was the brainchild behind the original collection. Along with husband
Peter Laverty, a former director of the Art Gallery of NSW, and artist
Margaret Woodward, Ursula was responsible for securing many of the
donations on behalf of Hornsby Arts Council.
Mayor McKinna said, “I would like to thank and congratulate Hornsby
Arts Council for their foresight and passion, which has resulted in this
magnificent investment in the arts.”
Managed by Gosford Regional Gallery, Gosford City Council Art
Collection is a community resource for educational, cultural and
intellectual use through exhibition, display or other programs.
“I like to keep the locals happy with
my reliable service and reasonable
prices,” said Josh (pictured above).
