Supporting young people to pursue
their interests within the community is
incredibly important, which is why I am
proud that Hornsby Shire Council
recently unveiled an exciting new
upgrade to Cherrybrook Skate Park.
The facility was opened late last month
with an event attended by some of Australia’s top
skateboarders, and has already proven to be wildly
popular with youth from Hornsby Shire and beyond.
Council collaborated with international company
Convic to improve the skate park, with new features
including a deep bowl, taco extension with granite
coping, vanishing quarter-pipe with refurbished
handrail and more. We also consulted extensively
with regular users of the skate park and parents in the
area, to get their opinion on the park’s design. This is
a great facility for our Shire that will encourage young
people to get active and enjoy the outdoors.

Galston Garden Club Open
Gardens Weekend on Friday

Eight outstanding acreage gardens

on each day. Garden locations on
website www.galstongardenclub.
com.au The price is $5 for an
individual garden. A $20 ticket
covers all gardens, and this ticket is
valid for all three days.
Here are a few tips to sell
your home this spring.
First impressions: buyers will
make a very quick decision based
on what they see from the street.
Trimming trees and bushes,
pressure-washing the exterior and
mulching the gardens are a great
way to create excellent curb appeal.
De-clutter: go through all of your
furniture and belongings with a
discerning eye to eliminate clutter.
Pack up anything you want to keep
and put it in the garage or storage.
You want your home to look as
spacious as possible.
Pre-sale building and pest
inspection: pre-sale building
and pest inspections put you in
control! If no issues are found, you
will have peace of mind knowing the
purchaser won’t be able to use any
problems to reduce the price. If an
issue is found any problems can be

for sale.
Price it right: even though
prices are still rising in most areas,
you need to be reasonable and
compare your home to similar
properties that have recently sold.
If you price your home too high and
have to lower your price, it will hurt
you more than if you price it right in

Dear Bush Tele,
What a great job Council is doing
on our behalf on Berowra Waters

All the work seems to being carried
out with great care and attention
to detail, even the dump site for
materials in Arcadia Crescent is
being kept safe and tidy.
It’s just a thought, but how about

rival and have its own version of
Kempsey’s Jacaranda Festival!
My personal preference would be
an Avenue of Waratahs, but I think
that might be a bit of a challenge,
but there are so many other
beautiful and hardy native shrubs
that could be considered.
How about it Councillors !!!

Oktoberfest 2014 ...
at the Berowra RSL
There was a great community response to the traditional
Bavarian Oktoberfest celebrations at Berowra RSL this year.
Patrons celebrated in the German theme with many wearing
lederhosen, some dressed as buxom ‘madchens’ in plaits
who all make their way into the Club which was transformed
into a Bier Hall for the night.
The traditional German fare was plentiful and included Pork
Knuckles, Schnitzels, German Sausages and Pretzels and

“Barvarians” Band.
The laughs continued with Keg rolling, Stein holding and
Yodelling competitions.
The question is: will the Cup holders be able to defend
their titles next year?

her ad in a

The process
was so simple:
we emailed
individual
photos of each
of our pets to
Jo and she sent
back several
layout options.
She then kept
us up to date
with progress
photos of her
work along the
way.
It was amazing to see how well
she managed to capture each
pet’s looks and personality.
We were so pleased with the results
of our group portrait that we have
commissioned another portrait from

HEALTH AND BEAUTY
PRICELESS
PEARLS
By Ralph Estherby
I love the smell but I don’t like the
taste…
I do not have very finicky tastes when
it comes to food and drink. There are
only two foods I don’t like and one
drink…both foods set hard if you leave
them overnight (which is probably
part of my aversion) porridge and rice
pudding. My distain for these has never
caused me much problem because
I don’t have that many morning
meetings with Scottish people and rice
pudding is not all that fashionable…but
my dislike of the beverage in question
does set me apart from the crowd.
Against all popular opinion I do not
like Coffee – in fact I cannot bear the
taste of it.
Interestingly although, I love the
smell of coffee but no matter how
many times I try, I am yet to find any
method of preparation, which makes
it palatable. I don’t like International
Roast, Pablo, Maxwell House, Nescafe,
or Moccona. Espressos, Long Blacks,
Lattes and Cappuccinos do nothing
for me. Piccolo Lattes, Macchiatos
and even Affogatos cannot change my
dislike of the underlying flavour.
I remember on my 18th Birthday my
next-door-neighbour went to great
lengths to bake me my birthday cake
– it was a beautiful looking cake and a
real labour of love but as she carried it
into the room I could smell the aroma
of the coffee icing from across the
room which changed it from a desert
to be enjoyed to one that had to be
endured.
I often get asked out for ‘Coffee’ by
people, sometimes they will rave about
a particular coffee shop which has
great coffee; I recently walked past 4
coffee shops which were described as
“rubbish” to get to one in particular that
was “amazing” only to disappoint the
person I was with when I ordered a Hot
Chocolate.
There are things in this life that attract
us by their aromas but they can leave
a bad taste in our mouths. Selfishness,
lying and infidelity may draw us from
afar but when we experience them
close at hand we are left bitter and
wishing we had never taken a sip. Just
because something smells or looks
good from the outside doesn’t mean
that it is going to do you good inside.
I am not equating coffee with sin or
suggesting you should give it up but I
am suggesting that we shouldn’t keep
trying to enjoy something that we were
never made for.
“How sweet are Your words to my taste,
Sweeter than honey to my mouth!”
Psalms 119:103

BREAST
CANCER
MYTHS
The latest data from the NSW Cancer
Institute shows that 575 women
in Northern Sydney Local Health
District including Hornsby Shire were
diagnosed with breast cancer in
2009. 1 By 2021, this is expected to
increase to 672.2
Meredith Kay, Director from
BreastScreen NSW Northern Sydney
and Central Coast Local Health
Districts says early diagnosis offers
the best treatment options and the
best chance of survival. “However
in New South Wales, approximately
only 50 percent women are having
their recommended free two-yearly
mammograms,” Meredith says.
Ms Kay says some of the most
common myths that contribute to
women in NSW not participating in
regular breast screening include a
lack of time, particularly for women
have never screened, and who have
not attended regularly.3
The fact is that most women are
unaware that the appointment usually
only takes 20-30 minutes.
“A mammogram takes a little amount
of time for a lot of peace of mind,”
says Ms Kay.
“If you’ve been putting off having a
mammogram use Breast Cancer
Awareness Month as an opportunity
to make an appointment and
encourage other women in your life to
do the same.”
Women aged 50-74 are
encouraged to call 13 20
50 to book an appointment
at the local BreastScreen
service, situated at Building
14, Gate 6A, Hornsby and
Ku-ring-gai Hospital,
3-7 Derby Road.

There are several causes of heel pain the most common being PLANTAR FASCIITIS
Plantar Fasciitis is simply inflammation of the big strong band on the bottom of the foot
(the plantar fascia). Symptoms usually begin as a "stone bruise" type of pain increasing to
chronic pain especially first thing in the morning or after rest. Sometimes there may be a sense
that something tears or "gives" in the arch of the foot during sport.
This kind of pain is easily treated by realigning and supporting the foot and leg which reduces
the trauma allowing the injured foot to recover.
FOOT AND LEG PAIN prevents patients of all ages from enjoying daily exercise such as
walking thus creating a vicious cycle.
Pain - no exercise - weight increase - more pain. Results in High blood pressure, Diabetes,
Joint abuse, surgical replacements etc
An easy mobility program is specifically devised for individual patients to break the cycle and
return to a healthy lifestyle.
WE TREAT
Painful Feet, Heels, Legs, Knees, Hips and low Back Pain,
Corns, Calluses, Painful Toenails, Tines, Growing Pains.
