Turn the Tide!
Newfoundland Club of America
2015 National Specialty
Hosted by
The Newfoundland Club of New England
Crowne Plaza Hotel
Warwick, Rhode Island
May 4 – May 9, 2015
Revision 5
January 17, 2015
Welcome!
The Newfoundland Club of New England is honored to host the NCA’s 2015 National, as we return to
Warwick, Rhode Island. Thanks to many volunteers, nearby regional clubs and many NCA Committees,
an event-filled week has been planned for you! Events include two draft tests, an advanced draft test,
two obedience trials, two rally trials, four days of conformation judging, and many informative and
educational events. We have also made sure to allow time to share a memorable week with friends old
and new, and to celebrate our wonderful Newfoundland dogs!
We hope you will enjoy the ability to purchase your 2015 National Specialty logo items in any of the
four AKC recognized colors – black, Landseer, brown or gray! We have a wide variety of items for you to
choose from - some available with the screen printed logo, some with the embroidered logo, and some
with the dog only. Check out our National Specialty webstore at www.ncanationalspecialty.org/2015 .
We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Warwick!
Donna Thibault, Chair
Our Site
The Crowne Plaza Hotel is our home away from home for the week. This spectacular 85-acre facility
has hosted a multitude of specialties – large and small – since the first time the NCA national took place
there in 1992. The experienced staff at the Crowne have been most helpful with our Specialty planning,
and are looking forward to the return of the Newfs for a fourth National Specialty!
All events are held on the grounds of the hotel. The show grounds are a typical grassy field and
subject to the usual weather changes of New England. All judging will take place outdoors, so please
plan accordingly.
The hotel is fully accessible, with outside ramps and inside elevators. T.F. Green Airport, located just
minutes from the hotel, is serviced by major airlines. Easy access to Interstate 95 makes an easy drive
from locations up and down the east coast. Our overflow hotel is located a short 5 minute drive from
the show site. Many malls, restaurants, shops and a public golf course are nearby.
Warwick is 10 minutes south of Providence and located within an hour or less of Boston, Plymouth
Rock, Connecticut’s casinos, Mystic Seaport, Rhode Island’s beautiful beaches, and the mansions of
Newport.
Be a Considerate Guest….
The spacious grounds of the Crowne Plaza Hotel provide ample space for us to exercise our dogs.
Stations with plastic bags and buckets will be liberally provided. Please use them!
There will be some areas marked “off limits,” such as flowerbeds and areas in the immediate vicinity
of the hotel entrances. Guests with dogs should be particularly alert to respect these designated areas.
… and Participate in the Clean-up Doody!
Earn chances to win prizes just for being a responsible dog owner! For each pile of "doo" you clean
up (whether your dog just "did" it or someone else's "done" it earlier) you get a raffle ticket. You don't
even need to own a dog to participate! Clean up at the other hotels qualifies as well. Tickets can be
acquired and hourly prizes can be claimed at the Hospitality Tent —physical proof of pick-up not
required.
Tickets will be drawn throughout the day Tuesday thru Saturday for your choice from an assortment
of smaller prizes. At the end of each day, ALL tickets are eligible for a larger prize drawn at the evening
1
event – Tuesday: NCA Annual Meeting; Wednesday: Educational Speaker; Thursday: Top Twenty; Friday:
Fine Arts Auction; Saturday: Awards Banquet. The more you clean, the more chances you have to win!
Donations of a small prize for “Clean-up Doody” will be accepted at the Hospitality tent daily.
Air Travel
T.F. Green Airport is located within 4 miles of the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Major carriers service the
airport. It is recommended that you check with individual airlines as to the current status of shipping
dogs in crates. If your travel plans have you arriving at Boston’s Logan Airport, your travel time to
Warwick is approximately one hour.
Accommodations
The 266 room, six-story Crowne Plaza Hotel is the headquarters of the NCA 2015 National Specialty.
Additional rooms have been reserved at a nearby Holiday Inn Express hotel located less than 2 miles
from the Crowne Plaza. Each hotel offers in-room coffee makers, hairdryer, irons/ironing boards and
high-speed internet access in guestrooms.
Room Reservations
Room reservations are to be sent to the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Reservations will not be accepted if
they are postmarked prior to January 5, 2015 to ensure a first come, first served policy on rooms.
Reservations must be submitted on the form on page 12, and must include a deposit equal to one
night’s lodging for the preferred hotel. Reservations by phone or fax will not be accepted at either of
our hotels! A separate name will be required for each room reserved. Rooms for our National will be
available beginning Sunday, May 3rd.
Individual guests may change their reservation up until April 3, 2015. Date changes after April 3,
2015 will result in cancellation of the entire reservation. Cancellations must be received prior to April
13, 2015 in order to get a refund. All cancellations after April 13, 2015 will be charged one night’s
room and tax.
Please be considerate when reserving rooms. Every year, unneeded rooms are reserved, only to be
cancelled at a later date. This causes confusion at the hotels and leaves many participants in doubt as to
where they will be staying. If you must cancel, please do so as early as possible.
No more than four (4) dogs may occupy any one guest room. Crates are to be placed on plastic
supplied by the hotel to protect carpets. Dogs left unattended in rooms must be crated! Any guest
whose dog makes excessive noise will receive one warning to remedy the situation. If the problem
persists after this warning, the hotel management reserves the right to remove the offending dog and
guest from the hotel. Dogs cannot be groomed in the rooms, and all bathing must be done at the
designated washing area.
Guests will be responsible for damage of rooms and will be charged accordingly by the hotel. A
cleaning fee will be charged for rooms with dogs as follows: $20 for the first night, $10 for each
additional night, up to a maximum of $50. This is non-refundable. Rooms will be serviced daily. The
staff will notify the Specialty Committee if they are unable to access a room for two consecutive days.
Refrigerators and Microwaves will be available upon request at a one-time charge of $20 each. Please
remember that the AKC allows for disciplinary action against exhibitors who fail to take proper care of
dog show sites and hotels.

the place to get your morning cup of coffee, grab-and-go breakfast items, and pick up a beverage during
the day. The tent will be open from 7:00 am until 30-minutes after judging Tuesday through Saturday.
A message board, announcements, and the previous day’s winners will be posted in the tent. You will
be able to get your questions answered and preview auction items. Tables and seating will be available
for you to take a break and catch up with old friends! For those arriving mid-week, welcome packets

Catalog Advertising - Contact: Lori Carver
Ads may be placed in the following categories: kennels, commercial, clubs, personal, memorials, and
Newfoundland Booster. To place your ads, please use the form on page 15. If placing more than one ad,
please copy the form for each ad. The deadline for receiving ads is February 28, 2015. We reserve the
right to reject ads which are deemed inappropriate or offensive, or which contain obviously plagiarized
materials.
Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of your ad if you will not be at the
National. Photos that are not picked up, or for which we do not receive a SASE, will not be returned.
There is no extension of the received-by date for ads. This date is driven by the superintendent’s
contract. Late submissions may be refused by the superintendent and are subject to per-page penalty
fees if accepted.
Parking - General
The hotel parking lots are able to accommodate our parking needs. Absolutely no parking will be
allowed on any grass areas of the hotel/show grounds except in the pre-registered RV area. Fire lanes
and NO PARKING areas will be monitored and vehicles in violation will be towed. Unloading zones near
the tents will be monitored to maintain ready access for all. X-pens will not be allowed to take up extra
parking spaces next to vehicles.
Reserved Handler Parking - Contact Sheila Mallinson
Reserved parking is available on a paved parking lot to any exhibitor with 4 or more dogs entered
in competition. Parking is for a standard size box truck or passenger vehicle/van. Reserved spaces are
approximately 18’ x 18’ (the equivalent of two standard parking spaces) . Parking is adjacent to the
show site, convenient to the breed ring and grooming tent. Spaces are limited, and will be available on
Sunday, May 3rd. No trailers or motor homes are permitted. There is no power hook-up provided.
The first postmark date accepted for reserved grooming space is January 15, 2015. If using
expedited service, signature must be waived. Reservation deadline is March 31, 2015. Please use the
reservation form on page 16. NOTE: All forms for adjacent spaces MUST be received in the
same envelope. Please make your plans with others well in advance of mailing forms.
Grooming Facilities
A large grooming tent with electrical outlets will be located close to the show rings. Per local noise
abatement ordinances, the generator will be operating from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm ONLY. In accordance
with the RI State Fire Code, there can be NO interior partitions inside the grooming tent. Grooming
from vehicles will be allowed in specified areas only. Bathing stations will be in place by Monday. There
will be no bathing of dogs allowed in hotel rooms, the RV parking area, or locations other than the
bathing stations.
The Grounds Committee will work diligently to open the grooming tent by noon on Monday. This is
dependent upon all tents and the show site passing the required inspections by the Fire Marshal and
other officials, and we have been given an occupancy permit. Circumstances beyond the committee’s
control and mandatory state inspections may delay the target opening of the tents. Exhibitors can plan
that grooming facilities will be available no later than 8:00 am on Tuesday.
4
Reserved Grooming Space - Contact: Dejah Petsch.
A limited number of pre-paid reserved grooming spaces will be available in a tent close to the
conformation ring. Each assigned 5’x10’ spot will include enough room for two crates, one grooming
table, and one 20 amp duplex outlet. The cost is $70.00 for the week for each 5’x10’ spot. There will be
a limited number of 10’x’10 spaces, with one 20 amp duplex outlet, available for $130 per week.
When reserving grooming space, we encourage you to plan ahead and buddy up with friends. By
sharing and coordinating the use of the show’s limited space and electrical resources with friends, you
make it possible for more people to have space to groom.
NOTE: All forms for adjacent spaces MUST be received in the same envelope. Please make your
plans with others well in advance of mailing forms.
Other non-reserved, tented grooming space, with no show provided electrical outlets, will be
available on a first come, first serve basis. Electrical service at this show is not guaranteed without a
reservation.
Dogs cannot be left crated in the grooming areas overnight. Privately owned generators are not
permitted within a 50’ radius of any show ring or tent. High intensity lights, canopies, or ‘pop up’ tents
are not permitted inside any of the grooming tents. THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.
The first postmark date accepted for reserved grooming space is January 15, 2015. If using
expedited service, signature must be waived. Reservation deadline is March 31, 2015. To reserve
grooming space, please use the form on page 17 .
RV Parking - Contact: Lynne Anderson

prepaid reservation only at a fee of $55 per night. Reservations will be accepted on a first come, first

2015. Reservations postmarked prior to January 15, 2015 will be returned. The deadline is March 31,

Come One – Come All
We ask one task- Come wearing a MASK!
The Top Twenty/Ten Committee presents
A Masquerade Ball
Please join us for a ‘ONE NIGHT EVENT’ of intrigue and mystery, as we honor our very distinguished
guests, the Top Twenty Conformation and Top Ten Obedience dogs of 2014!
We return to ‘Ballroom Style’ for this unique semi-formal masked event! Beginning with a reception
that will give way to discovering ’Who is behind the mask?’ The main feature will of course be the
competition for Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice in conformation and a special contest between our
top obedience dogs.
Our judges include a Breeder judge, a professional handler and an AKC licensed judge. Their
selection will be based on a specific score sheet provided by NCA. A ballot will be issued to all in
attendance for the prestigious People’s Choice Award. While those are being tallied we will put our top
obedience dogs to a challenge for Top Dog. We will conclude the evening with the announcement of all
our winners: Judges’ Choice, People’s Choice, Top Obedience dog and Best Masked/ Dressed
Spectators!
Registration for this special evening is required! Use the form on page 24 to order your tickets; the
deadline is March 31, 2015. Some suggested websites for ordering your mask are: www.partyoasis.com

shared information and education. Mingle with fellow working enthusiasts and judges, listen to the most
recent updates from the WDC, ask questions and discuss the new Advanced Draft Test.
A classroom style discussion will begin at (time). NCA judges and the WDC will be available to answer
your questions about judging, training and interpreting the NCA regulations. All levels of questions will
7
be welcomed from beginners to judges. This is the place to express your concerns, questions and praise
about our working events. This will also be considered a continuing education event for NCA judges.
(Judges please sign attendance log)
Specialty Carting – Contact: Sue Mendleson
Prior to the development of the NCA Draft Test, Specialty Carting and Wagon Exercises were
developed to demonstrate carting at specialty shows and were designed largely for people interested in
exhibition carting activities. It is a perfect event for someone not quite ready to compete in a full draft
test. There are on-leash and off-leash divisions for individual dogs or teams. The exercises include
harnessing and hitching, basic commands while hitched, and maneuvering within a large ring setting.
This is not a ‘title’ event. Each dog that passes will be awarded an NCA Specialty Carting and Wagon
Exercises Certificate. Dogs passing the on-leash division may post enter and compete in the off-leash
division. There will be an entry fee of $15; post entry fee is $10. Entries close April 15, 2015. The form
to enter is on page 25. Specialty Carting will take place on Friday, May 8th.
Please see the next section for a special opportunity!
To obtain a copy of the rules for the Specialty Cart and Wagon Exercises, visit the NCA Working Dog
website at www.ncanewfs.org/working/draft . For more information contact Sue Mendleson
Draft Equipment Fit Evaluations
This event is for carting/draft enthusiasts as well as NCA Draft judges.
During Specialty Carting, anyone at the National with a Newf and draft equipment may have their
equipment evaluated for fit and balance just by making a hitched dog available. There is no fee for
evaluations. Specialty Carting participants electing for evaluation will be reviewed after their carting
routine. It would be especially helpful for evaluators and spectators to see equipment that is different
from what is normally seen at Draft Tests.
NCA draft judges will form small groups to evaluate the presented draft equipment. Each judge in the
group will go over the dog in harness while hitched and will then discuss the group findings. The handler
will then receive an oral evaluation of their equipment fit. Spectators are encouraged to listen in on the
judges' discussions and comments.
Pre-registration is not required, but will be helpful for planning. Please complete the form on page
25. For more information contact Sue Mendleson.
Canine Good Citizen Test – Contact: Kathy Grim
Both CGC and Advanced CGC testing will be offered Thursday, May 7. The purpose of the CGC
program is to ensure that our Newfs are respected members of the community and have been trained
to be well behaved in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs. For Newfs that
have already passed their CGC test and are registered with AKC (AKC number, PAL, or AKC Canine
Partners number) we will be offering the advanced test with more challenging exercises. Newfs passing
either test may have the respective title added to their name (CGC or CGCA). The fee for testing is $15
per dog, and pre-registration by March 31st is encouraged. Please use the form on page 26 to let us
know how many dogs you will be testing, and to volunteer to help!
