February 1, 2015 World Day for Consecrated Life Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Pope Francis has declared 2015 as the Year of Consecrated Life in the Universal Church. We give thanks and honor the women and men in consecrated life who have served and are serving here in our great Diocese of Rockville Centre. The life of this local Church has been blessed through the mission and ministry of these dedicated women and men who are responding to God’s call to each of them to follow Jesus as vowed religious. As religious, their commit‐
ment to a life of prayer, lived in community and expressed through their ministry in the Church, witnesses to their re‐
sponse to God’s love for them. Their vowed commitment to God and service to the Church is a gift for all of us. As we move through this Year of Consecrated Life I invite each of you to take whatever opportunities are pre‐
sented to say “thanks” to the religious who are here in our Diocese, to remember them in your prayers and to pray that other generous young people respond to God’s call to join them as religious sisters, brothers and priests. I join my prayers with yours in thanksgiving for their lives of prayer and service and in petition that God will bless each of the religious who are part of our Diocese with gifts of grace, hope & peace as they witness to God’s great love. I ask Mary, Mother of the Church, to continue to inspire each of them as they live a life of “Yes” to God’s call. Faithfully yours in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS

In today’s Gospel Jesus enters a synagogue in the
town of Capernaum, in northern Israel on the shore of
the Sea of Galilee. It was the Sabbath and as was the
custom, Jewish men went to the local synagogue to
pray and listen to sections of the scriptures. The local
rabbi would then teach them the meaning of those
words. (Just as Jews do today in their synagogues and
as we do at Mass.) Because Jesus was visiting, he
was invited to read and teach. The interesting thing
about Jesus teaching was that he taught with
’authority,’ that is as one who is close to God and
speaks with the approval and power that comes from
God. To show that ‘authority’ even more, Jesus also
makes an evil spirit leave a man who was in the
synagogue. The people were quite amazed by this!
Questions to talk about –
God is always trying to reach out to us in all sorts of
ways. We don’t always listen or see.
Banner Making Reschedule
All home taught and Grade 3 CGS student will have
their banner making session on Wednesday, Feb. 4th
at 7 PM in the auditorium.
How or when do I think that God is telling me
something?
Even though the people in the synagogue saw these
great things, they did not become Jesus’ followers.
Can I think of some good gift God gave me that I did
not appreciate?

Hints for the Flu Season
As we enter the flu season, we are offering two practical directives to assist the congregation during Mass.
The “Sign of Peace” does not have to be a handshake.
Turning to those near you and offering a slight bow with a verbal wish without touching is proper.
Be mindful of the symptoms of colds and the flu. If
you have any symptoms, please refrain from receiving the Precious Blood from the Communion Cup.
Also, getting a flu shot is a way of helping yourself & others.
The Spirituality of Frozen
An adaptation of The Snow Queen, by Hans Christian
Anderson will be presented at the Cenacle Retreat
House in Ronkonkoma on Sunday, February 8th from 1 - 4:30
PM. What can the exquisite wintery beauty and deep inner
wisdom to this Disney animation reveal to us about letting go
and the tenacious, transformative power of true love? Are
your feelings “frozen”? Come watch the movie in full – bring
your mother, daughter, niece, sister. All ages welcome! Arrive
at 1 pm to enjoy refreshments. Free will offering.

Becoming a Catholic Christian
Do you know a neighbor or family member who has expressed a desire to learn more about the Catholic faith, and,
perhaps, to enter our Catholic community? Perhaps your spouse has been thinking about becoming a Catholic and does
not know how to proceed. Have you been explaining your faith to someone, and now that individual wants to know more about the
Catholic religion? If the answer to any of the above questions is “Yes,” then you should know about the RCIA, which stands for
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. The Church uses this process to help adults move toward an adult commitment to the Lord,
and full participation in the Catholic community. It is meant specifically for adults who are seeking Baptism, or those who have not
received Confirmation or Eucharist. Those interested are invited to contact the rectory 732-3131 x 110.
