A monthly publication of the Simi Valley Art Association F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 5 President’s Message G reetings! What a wonderful meeting we had in January! Pastel artist Judith Crowe gave us a wonderful demonstration. I was particularly impressed with the technique of the watercolor under-painting underneath her pastel art. She is having many upcoming workshops and I hope those of you who love pastels will join her. We had some new members this year join our group, Carmen Lamp, Karen Schroder and Sondra Ah Tye. Please introduce yourselves at the next meeting. Welcome, Carmen, Karen and Sondra!! Just for fun, in the Art Opportunities section of our newsletter, I have included some wonderful websites that advertise art opportunities and juried shows that you can apply to. For those of you that want to show your art more, they are a wonderful opportunity to get your work out there and be noticed! Our next two demos will be so much fun! In February, we kick off our member led demo/workshops. I will be leading the first one with a workshop on figurative paper collage. It will be at the gallery and a supply list is below. In March, we have esteemed plein air oil painter Rob Impellizzeri, who will be giving an oil painting demo. Hope to see you all at these next two fun events. Demos/General Meetings held usually on 3rd Thursday of the month, 7pm. at Simi Valley Public Library Community Room, 2969 Tapo Canyon Rd. The SVAA gallery is located at Store#140, 1555 Simi Town Center Way, Simi Valley GUEST DEMO ARTIST 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 19, 2015, at the SVAA Gallery, Simi Town Center For further info contact Katy Kearny at 805-579-9199 Kathr yn Kearny A Paper Collage Artist California native, Kathryn Kearny has been a resident of Simi Valley for 20 years. Before raising her daughter here, she enjoyed a very successful career as a fashion designer. Her work was showcased on the covers of all the major bridal magazines, was featured in film and television, and has been worn by many celebrities including Oprah Winfery and Ivana Trump. While managing Beverly’s, a local arts and crafts store, Kathryn discovered another outlet for her creative talents in the paints and papers she sold. She began to collect paper and magazine pictures, just because she liked them, never knowing what she would do with them. When the stack grew to over 12 feet tall, she reasoned it best to create something with them or the hoarders TV show might come after her! So she created a small collage for her kitchen, and she found her true passion; painting with paper! Many of Kathryn’s pieces look like paintings from afar, but when one steps up close, they can see that they are created from thousands of pieces of tiny paper. Many of her pieces contain hidden images for the viewers enjoyment to find. In her latest series, “Where Were You When?”, the pieces contain hidden images of the historical event itself. Kathryn’s philosophy about art is that it should be fun, thought provoking, and enjoyable for people of all ages and backgrounds. Everyone remembers collage art from Kindergarten, and hopes her artwork will show the viewer a new dimension to this medium. s 20x24 4 Days – A Nation Remember ges of four ima g ntin hau ny ma s Contain days in history. 9/11 – By The A Salute to all Numbers 24x36 where all thei the firefighters lost the painting. r names are hidden in FEBRUARY DEMO/WORKSHOP ART SUPPLY LIST (From Katy Kearny): The mini workshop demo in February is interactive. We hope all members will not only come, but participate. We will be learning the art of Figurative Paper Collage. Here is the supply list if you want to participate: s#ANVAS"OARDOR#ANVASXORSIMILARSMALLSIZE s#OLLAGE'LUE)PREFER,IQUITEX'LOSS'EL-EDIUMBUTANYSIMILARGLUEWILLWORK s/LD3OFT0AINTBRUSHESv&ILBERTISMYFAVORITE s-AGAZINE0ICTURES)LIKE.ATIONAL'EOGRAPHICBECAUSEOFTHEGREATCOLORS s0APER3CRAPS4HISCANINCLUDE2ICE0APER4ISSUE0APER-APS3HEET-USIC,ETTERSETC s!CRYLIC0AINTS4HISISFORPAINTINGOVERSOMEOFTHEPAPERSTOACHIEVEAGREATEFFECT s3CISSORS4HESMALLERTHEBETTER *** I would suggest coming in with your canvas already underpainted or drawn on with the subject you wish to collage. Something simple is best for this workshop, an apple, another piece of fruit, a bird or butterfly, a flower such as a daisy or sunflower. When you are choosing your papers to bring, you can be bringing papers that will work for your art. ***Another fun note: If you chose to do an underpainting on your canvas, paint in acrylic with the complimentary colors of what the subject will be. When you place your paper on, it will really “pop”. FEBRUARY 2015 s 2 GALLERY NEWS Backup Gallery Coordinator/Scheduler: Donna Snyder 805-527-6797 email [email protected] Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!! Time for hugs, kisses, and of course hearts filled with chocolate, lots of chocolate. But it can also be a time to give your honey a very special gift. The Gallery is filled with many wonderful works of art that would make for lovely Valentine presents. Your purchases have an added bonus of having a percentage of the sales go to our annual high school Art Scholarship fund. Even with lots of construction going on here at the Town Center, we are still seeing people come thru the gallery. The Town Center is anticipating the new theater to be finished by the end of May. Also, there are several new businesses and restaurants on the horizon, along with a new lighted sign near the freeway. All of which should help promote our Town Center and make it a central focus of our community. The Simi Valley Art Association Gallery is a wonderful opportunity for our artists to display their talent and creativity. We warmly welcome all who stop in for a visit. So casually browse thorugh and have a look. Great news for the Simi Valley Town Center: The Simi Valley City Council approved the plans for new and improved signage for the center, plans for a drive through coffee house and a future supermarket. There are also plans for a major clothing retailer, a cosmetics store, and an accessory store. We will let you guess what all those are. The movie theater and restaurant are expected to open by late Spring. This is great news for our community as well as our gallery as long as we have the space that has been so generously donated to us. To SVAA Gallery Artists: There are new gallery guidelines, please make sure you read them and sign them when you are sitting. Even though we have no official gallery coordinator at this time, Donna Snyder will continue to do the scheduling. Please be considerate of her time and efforts and sign up to sit! We have many new people who are thinking about becoming gallery members, so those of us lucky to have some of the larger spaces may be notified that sharing in the Reminder: uires sitting the gallery as well as being an active member com those spaces may become necessary.
