FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH
This Month in Our Galleries —
In the Hallway Gallery:
Images of Africa
Photographs of Africa by Melody Hockley. The opening
reception is Saturday, February 14th, from 1 to 3 p.m.
The ‘Saxy’ Asylum Quartet
Lauded for “nonstop virtuoso skills” (Times Herald-Record, NY), the Asylum Quartet plays everything from lush
classical works to modernism; indie rock to klezmer.
The four classically-trained saxophonists that make up
the quartet are Joseph Abad on soprano sax, Tony Speranza on alto sax, Max Schwimmer on tenor sax, and Andrew
Barnhart on baritone sax.
The Quartet will perform on the Budarz Stage on
Sunday, February 1st at 2 p.m.
For more information, visit www.asylumquartet.com.
Digging Into Lives In Ruin
On Wednesday, February 4th at 7 p.m., (snow date; February 11th), Bob Minzesheimer will join Marilyn Johnson in
the Budarz Theater to discuss her new book, Lives in Ruins:
Archaeologists and the Seductive Lure of Human Rubble.
Lives in Ruin is an absorbing and entertaining look at
the lives of contemporary archaeologists as they sweat under the sun for clues to the puzzle of our past. Johnson
digs and drinks alongside archaeologists who share stories
about slaves and Ice Age hunters, ordinary soldiers of the
American Revolution, children of the first century, Chinese woman warriors, sunken fleets, and mummies.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase. For
more information, visit www.marilynjohnson.net.
In the Main Gallery:
The Roads Traveled
Paintings by folk artist Madge Scott. The opening reception is Saturday, February 7th, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Hemingway Out Loud
Voice actor Alan Sklar returns to the library’s Budarz Theater on Thursday, February 5th at 7 p.m. to perform a reading of The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, widely
considered to be one of Ernest Hemingway’s best short
stories. The story, about an American couple on their first
African hunting safari, is about courage and cowardice,
and pulls few punches.
JAZZ! The Tony Jefferson Quartet
Sunday, February 8th, (snow date; February 15th), drummer and vocalist Tony Jefferson will perform with his
Quartet, at 2 p.m. in the Budarz Theater.
Tony has toured around the globe, playing along with
world-class musicians such as Eddie Harris, Kenny Drew
Jr., Lonnie Smith, Cyrus Chestnut, and more.
Screening: Rise Above the Mark
On Tuesday, February 10th, the Ossining Union Free
School District, Ossining Public Library, and the PTA are
co-sponsoring a screening of the film Rise Above the Mark,
to be shown at 7 p.m. in the Budarz Theater.
This documentary focuses on Indiana’s struggles with
public school reforms—the same types of struggles experienced in schools throughout the United States.

Bodies in the Library
March’s Bodies in the Library book selection is About Face, by Donna Leon
(Spain).
Detective Guido Brunetti is a man who
takes his pasta and after-dinner cordials
as seriously as political corruption and
police investigations. He’s also capable
of becoming enchanted by a woman with a surgically
damaged face simply because she can quote Cicero.
What better guide to the intriguing city of Venice?
Join us on Friday, March 6th at noon in the Conference Room for Middle Age mayhem, mystery and
strange herbal concoctions. Feel free to bring lunch
and a (covered) beverage.
The group is moderated by writer Catherine Wald.
Spanish Book Club
On February 25th at 7 p.m., the Spanish Book Club
will meet in the Teen Meeting
Room to discuss Los Pastores
de la Noche by the Brazilian
author Jorge Amado.
moderador.
— Copies of all discussion group books are available at the Information Desk. —
