NHS Fundraiser – Winters Mill High School
The Winters Mill High School National Honor Society is sponsoring a fundraiser through Saturday,
February 21. NHS members are selling eco-friendly tote bags, travel bags, kitchenware, home goods,
and more through Mixed Bag Designs to raise money to cover costs and fund senior scholarships.

Academy Health Fair – Manchester Valley High School
Students in the Health, Human and Social Sciences Academy at Manchester Valley High School will hold
a health fair on Monday, February 9, beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria.

One School, One Book – Manchester Elementary School
During the month of February, Manchester Elementary School is participating in “One School, One
Book”, a program that promotes literature at home and the school environment through the use of one
common book. The school will be reading The World According to Humphrey. Each student and
classroom teacher will receive a copy of the book, as well as a schedule for reading during the month.
In order to engage the students and their families, an evening event entitled “A Dinner Date with
Humphrey” will be held on Tuesday, February 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. The evening will include dinner and a
display of school projects and student work. A guest reader will entertain the students and rotations
throughout the classrooms will take place to support the book.

“Watt-Free Wednesday – Manchester Valley High School
The Enviro Club at Manchester Valley High School is participating in a weekly energy conservation
initiative called Watt-Free Wednesday. The next day for the initiative is Wednesday, February 11. The
school is actively seeking to educate everyone about social responsibility towards our planet.

Board Meeting
The Board of Education of Carroll County will meet on Wednesday, February 11, at 4:00 p.m. in the
Charles I. Ecker Boardroom at the Board of Education offices, located at 125 North Court Street in
Westminster. Agenda items will include the adoption of the FY16 Operating Budget. In addition, the
Board will begin discussions on make-up days for inclement weather. There will be time for citizen
participation at this meeting. The public is encouraged to attend.
Citizen participation will be held following administrative items and presentations. Citizens who wish to
address the Board during Citizen Participation are encouraged to check the agenda prior to the meeting
to determine what time the public comment portion of the meeting will begin. The agenda and back-up
materials for the meeting can be found by going to the school system’s website at www.carrollk12.org
and clicking on “Online Meeting Agenda” at the bottom of the page.

Jump-A-Thon – Manchester Elementary School
Students at Manchester Elementary School will be participating in a Jump-A-Thon to raise funds for a
new playground on Friday, February 13, from 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. during their special area time. All
donations will go directly to the new playground.

String Extravaganza – Northwest Region Schools
String students of the northwest region schools will be participating in the 13th annual String
Extravaganza in the auditorium at Francis Scott Key High School on Tuesday, February 17. The purpose is
to promote string instrument performance and to encourage current students to continue to participate
in school orchestra throughout their public school years. This Suzuki-style performance begins with the
FSK High School orchestra. Middle and elementary school students will be added as the performance
continues. The evening ends with a mass orchestra of 100 or more musicians in grades 4-12. The concert
begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Special Education Workshop
The Partners for Success Center of Carroll County Public Schools will sponsor a workshop for parents and
school staff on Wednesday, February 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carroll Springs School in Westminster.
The workshop, entitled “Around the World of Special Education”, gives participants an overview of the
special education process and acquaints them with the terminology and procedures involved in special
education. Topics will include the definition of special education terms, federal and state laws, the
special education cycle, eligibility, advocacy (parent involvement in the IEP process), Individualized
Education Plans, and resources.

Middle School Musical - My Son Pinocchio Jr.
Carroll County Public Schools students will be performing the second collaborative middle school
musical, Disney’s My Son Pinocchio Jr, sponsored by the Gifted and Talented Program. This musical will
be held on Friday, February 20, at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, February 21, at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m., at
Winters Mill High School in Westminster. Snow dates are February 27 and 28 at the same times and
location.
Those who wish to attend are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance to help reduce long lines
at the ticket counter. Tickets are available for a donation of $5.00. In addition, attendees are asked to
bring a can of food to be donated to Carroll County Food Sunday. Cash or checks may be made out to
Carroll County Public Schools. No refunds will be given. Tickets may be purchased at Winters Mill on
February 12, 13, 17, 18, and 19 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and two hours prior to each performance.

31 Bag Bingo – Francis Scott Key High School
A 31 Bag Bingo will be held at Francis Scott Key High School on Saturday, February 21. All bags are
themed and filled with great contents. Themes include Ravens, Orioles, MD Terrapins, gardening,
cooking, scrapbooking, golf, car essentials, office, dogs, gift wrap, pool toys, movies, technology, FSK
Graduation (includes 2 reserved tickets to graduation and a reserved parking pass), FSK Prom (includes 2
free FSK Prom tickets), and FSK Spirit (includes 2 free FSK spring sports passes). There will also be a
special 31 bag containing hundreds of dollars of gift cards and gift certificates to local restaurants and
businesses. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and bingo will begin at 7 p.m. The event will include food, a 50/50
drawing, door prizes, and numerous vendors. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. All
proceeds from the event will help fund AP Exam scholarships at the high school. For more information,

African American Read-In
Carroll County Public Schools, Carroll County Chapter of the NAACP, and Carroll County Public Library
are partnering to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month by hosting an African American
Read-In. The event will be held on Thursday, February 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carroll County Arts
Center, located at 91 West Main Street in Westminster. A reception with light refreshments will be held
from 6 to 6:30 p.m. A performance by a high school jazz band and book displays from the school system
and the public library also will be featured during the reception. The read-in will take place from 6:30 to
8 p.m. Local high school students will share book excerpts and poetry written by African American
writers.
